10's jacqueline london. jacqueline, more big developments today on the story involving ryan lochte and other members of the u.s. swim team. the police actually accused them about lying about this armed robbery. >> reporter: yeah, it hasn't even been 24 hours since police pulled two of the four swimmers off the plane for further questioning. the interrogation today reveals what may have really happened that night. brazilian police say a fight over a bathroom door led to a lie in ryan lochte, and embarrassing international incident. now investigators are trying to separate fact from fiction over a robbery report. today three of lochte's teammates are stranded in brazil after police seized their passports. two of them appeared to fold, after authorities forced them off their plane last night. they reportedly told investigators today the robbery was fabricated.

>> and this guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and said get down. i put my hands up. >> reporter: lochte said he and his teammates were robbed at gun point saturday morning. he told nbc's matt lauer on the phone last night that he is sticking by his story. but this new surveillance video is painting a clearer picture. investigators said the swimmers tried to get inside a locked bathroom door at the gas station. when they couldn't, they broke down the door before two armed security guards confronted them. the guards admitted to police that they pointed their guns at the swimmers. the gas station manager asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door. they handed over some cash and then left. security video shows them returning to the athletes village a short time later. lochte arrived home to north carolina tuesday on a scheduled flight before a judge ordered that he stay. u.s. olympic committee said the

three swimmers who are still stranded have the support of their attorneys and the u.s. consulate in rio. the swimmers could face punishment, probation, suspension, a fine, or expulsion under usa's swimming code of conduct which prohibits dishonesty or fraud. right now it's unclear if the organization will act. and a lot more happening here in rio. take a look at the big talker of today. and there's video to go along with it. it was a bump of the arm to alyson felix which was a botched handoff in the women's 4 by 100 relay. what that means for that team tonight. so no shortage of stories, and no shortage of drama here in rio de janeiro, as the olympics come to an end. reporting live from rio, jacqueline london, nbc 10 news. keith, back to you. >> seems to be the case every

single day. now to other top stories of the day. a big one for one of the biggest malls in the country. the king of prussia mall debuted its new opening today. sure to be a shopper's dream. deanna durante takes us inside. >> reporter: with that, shoppers can now walk between what was once the plaza in the court without ever having to go outside. >> i think it's fabulous. i grew up in this area. and i remember the mall when it was an open-air mall. i had to come today and see this great expansion. >> reporter: the high-end retailers are famous name like tiffany's and jimmy chu. many new dining options from a sushi burrito to a local chef's creations. >> even two years ago i would have said never. but the fact that they were putting this together, look at

thanksgiving. when everything is open, the mall will have more than 400 stores. and cover nearly 3 million square feet. let's compare that to the mall like in cherry hill. it has 160 stores and less than half the size of king of prussia. switching gears now, a child porn bust in new jersey led to the arrests of these 40 men. the sweep resulted in one arrested in every county of the state. the suspects are as old as 20 and old as 72. it includes a former teacher who taught in burlington county, as well as philadelphia and bristol township bucks county. in a span of three days, the office of attorney general has been gone from kathleen kane and bruce castor, to beamer. beamer is the current inspector general, served as kane's first deputy. the senate has 20 days to confirm beamer's nomination. no word on when that vote will

happen. even if beamer is approved, he won't be in office long. that's because there's an election for attorney general this november. democrat judge shapiro is running against republican john rafferty. the eagles have flown west for their next preseason test. tonight they take on the steelers in pittsburgh. csn's john clark is there live right now. john, a lot of eyes on sam bradford. >> reporter: we only got to see sam bradford for three plays in that first preseason game. tonight you're going to see a lot more of them. doug peterson's going to play them into the second quarter. that's good to see. they're warming up on the field behind me. look at sam bradford in action. what's interesting, the two years before this, sam bradford did not play in the first preseason game. he played in that first preseason game last week and e

this last heat wave made us sweat. it also took some of the sting out of those pesky summer mosquitoes. especially down the jersey shore. but that could change very quickly. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg is live in upper township, cape may county, to explain why. ted? >> reporter: well, keith, a lot of folks have needed a lot less of this. bug spray in the past couple weeks. but experts say don't put it away just yet. a day of crabbing with her family in stone harbor has come

with a little less bite lately. but diana blair isn't complaining. >> we've had some flies, but not too many mosquitoes. it's actually kind of refreshing. >> reporter: so far this year the cape may department of mosquito control has collected 25% fewer mosquitoes compared to the same time in 2015. >> overall, less mosquitoes. it's been the trend the last couple of weeks. >> reporter: experts say the recent heat wave and little rain are likely among the reasons why. >> they don't like the extreme heat. it actually dries them out. and it shortens their life span. >> reporter: billions of mosquito eggs in salt marshes just like this one along the jersey shore. the situation could quickly change if there's rainfall, more significant than what we got overnight, and the water sticks around for five to seven days to create prime mosquito breeding grounds. >> coupled with high tides, ow lunar tides, the mosquito production could take off in about a week's time. >> reporter: for now, though,

fewer mosquitoes means more time for fun. >> enables you to stay outside and enjoy your activities better. >> reporter: but remember, mosquito season usually lasts until there's a very hard frost, often in late october, or early november. so there's still a lot of time left for them to bite you. live in upper township, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> got to have a lot of bug spray handy, ted, thank you very much. we're not expecting a frost anytime soon, but we're finally going down in the heat wave. >> we'll be cooling down a lot with much lower humidity. look at the seven-day, temperatures drastically changing into next week. but it's still hot outside. 86 through parts of the lehigh valley. everybody seeing the sunshine. philadelphia coming in 88 degrees right now. so our pennsylvania suburbs, our

neighborhood temperatures here, cochranville, 85 degrees. unionville 85. phoenixville 87. much of montgomery county is in about the mid to upper 80s. collegeville with a reading of 90, a little bit warm, but warrington coming in at 85 degrees. the humidity, not as oppressive today, and the heat wave very close to coming to an end. so far today in the philadelphia area, we've been in the upper 80s. but we broke a little bit out of the 90s this afternoon. we'll have to see what the official high is in just a little bit here. over the weekend, the temperatures will be back around 90 degrees. it's still going to be hot this weekend, around 92. thunderstorms as we go through part of your weekend. not the whole thing, of course. your plans still look pretty good. as we go into next week, that's when weapon get the relief. it will be later on next week, not this weekend just yet. but the heat will be much lower, the humidity will be much lower. i really think you're going to like the forecast. locally on radar, we're nice and

dry. a few small showers trying to move into the poconos. best chance for anything later on this evening will be north and west of philadelphia. but not a big chance. it would be fairly isolated. here's a look at future weather tonight. we're going to stay mostly dry. tomorrow, another dry day. could see a shower up north and east. i think for the most part that's going to be it for your friday. saturday not looking too bad either. mostly sunny, maybe an isolated afternoon shower. sunday, mostly sunny. later in the day we'll be watching rain off to our west. and thunderstorms later in the day on sunday. so next three days, philadelphia area friday 89 and sunny. saturday near 90. sunday 91, with a chance of late day thunderstorms. pennsylvania suburbs around 90. best chance of showers late sunday. lehigh valley, same thing. mid-80s on sunday with a chance of the late day showers. if you're in new jersey friday and saturday, upper 80s. sunday late day showers or

storms. temperatures mainly in the mid-80s for your friday. but near 80 degrees saturday and sunday. nice looking weekend at the shore. delaware around 90 degrees through the weekend. still hot this weekend. relief not coming until next week. if you're heading to the shore, though, this weekend, avalon 79 saturday. 81 on sunday. margate, stone harbor all coming in around 80 degrees for the most part. rehoboth beach possibly around 91. and the uv index will be high. over the weekend, again, we're around 90 still. big changes into monday. look at next week, 83 monday, 81 on tuesday, sunny 83 wednesday, 85 thursday. that's going to be a big relief. lower humidity, the heat is going to be much lower. it's going to feel really, really nice. it's going to carry over a little bit as we go into next weekend. but temperatures will still be right near 90 degrees. if you look at both weekends here, they're both going to be fairly hot. in between those weekdays, it's going to feel great especially

in the morning hours. we'll take a closer look at your neighborhood weather coming up. pennsylvania officials gave an update today on the state's new medical marijuana program. governor wolf signed it back in april. temporary regulations for growers and processors have been drafted. >> this is a medical program. and we want physicians to be engaged with the program, and we want to compose those regulations in a thoughtful way. >> the program is expected to be up and running by early 2018. get a load of this now. one new jersey lawmaker has a concern about the claw games found in arcades and amusement parks. a state senator introduced a bill that would create more oversight over those games. critics say the claw games are easy to rig because operators can control the strength of the joy stick that works the claw. an official with the new jersey

firefighters in southern california continue to battle a wildfire that is still growing. the fire started tuesday and caused officials to order more than 80,000 people to evacuate their homes. the so-called blue cut fire is burning in san bernardino county, about an hour east of los angeles. the fire has grown to nearly 50 square miles. it's about the size of walt disney world. about 34,000 homes are in the

evacuation area. we talked to a frankfurt woman who is originally from california. >> it's not comfortable when your family is in an immediate threat. just to make sure my father is okay. as long as he's okay, i'm happy. that's all i care about right now. >> she told us she has been unable to get in contact with her father because the fire has knocked out power lines. moving east, the u.s. secretary of homeland security today toured parts of louisiana that had been devastated by historic floods. jeh johnson said the federal government will be in louisiana as long as it takes to help the community recover. the national weather service today washed heavy rains could lead to more floods in parts of the state. a woman found dead in a trash can, shot several times. police investigate this young woman's death, the victim's mother is telling us more about her life. that's next on nbc 10 news at 5:00.

a community in shock. today they learned the victim found dead in a trash can was a young woman from wilmington. she was shot several times. and now police have a person of interest in custody. nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong spoke to the victim's mother today. >> reporter: she actually lives a few blocks up taking care of her grandparents.

she would often come down to visit her on-again, off-again boyfriend. that is where, by the way, we know she was found dead yesterday, just a way from that house in a recycle bin out here on the curb. >> near the thomas edison school. >> reporter: a viewer sent this cell video to nbc 10. it was actually the body of 21-year-old precious hosskin, shot a number of times and stuffed into a recycle bin. >> everybody loved her. >> reporter: mary said the 21-year-old was in an on-again, off-again relationship with her boyfriend. he had recently done jail time for pulling a gun on her once before. >> i just found out that he was abusive to her. and i didn't know that. because she didn't tell me that. but he was a good dude. he just was dealing with mental issues. >> reporter: this morning a

wilmington s.w.a.t. team surrounded this home. the recycle bin had been discovered behind the row homes. a map is now being questioned by police. the crime scene team has been at the house all day searching for clues, as neighbors build a small memorial for precious. >> it's a shame. it doesn't make no sense. too much killing going on down here. i'm ready to move. >> reporter: you can see wilmington police department crime scene team here. they took the man from the house in custody, now at police headquarters. we've seen police gathering evidence. we saw them walk out with a long piece of railing. they're really doing evidence hunting in that house. hours after the initial s.w.a.t. team appeared here in wilmington. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> tim, thank you. bucks county's district attorney is retiring. david heckler announced to leave office september 2nd, more than a year before his send term was set to come to an end.

but heckler said he accomplished what he set out to do when he ran for office seven years ago. michelle henry will serve as district attorney until a replacement is named. more than 200 local children learned the importance of swimming safety. the boys and girls club of camden partnered with a connectic connecticut-based water group for the camp. there was an award ceremony that included special guests from the camden county sheriff's department. back here live in rio de janeiro. team usa and south jersey's english gardner get a second chance at the 4 by 100 women's relay. that's because american alex felix was bumped when she tried to hand off the baton. did you see it? if not, take a look. even if you did see it, it's

worth taking a look again. she tried to pass the baton to gardner. felix collided with a brazilian runner in the lane next to her. the u.s. won their appeal and will now run again tonight by themselves. they have to be the slowest qualifying team to make it into the final. there are a lot of other local track athletes who are dominating at olympic stadium. take a look at this video. bethlehem native, we've been talking about him and dorrel hill. both qualifying for the men's shot put today. kovaks will compete tonight. nbc 10 at a watch party for the olympian this morning at his alma mater. his former coach told us how much dorrel's olympic experience has meant to his biggest fans back home. >> the good part about this is he's young. so he has at least two more

in today's "nbc 10 responds," a woman waits months for her tax refund from the state of new jersey. after it doesn't show up, she reaches out to harry hairston for help. >> this washington township woman just wanted to do something nice for her son's high school graduation.

but she said the state failed her by leaving her refund in limbo. laurie couldn't wait to see her son, hank, graduate from high school. >> i was looking forward to that, to give him a nice gift. >> reporter: she planned to use the money from her tax return to throw hank a celebration before he starts college. >> he was asking for a dinner out with friends and loved ones. >> reporter: she filed both her state and federal taxes back in february. getting her money back from one return proved easy. >> in two weeks, i got the federal one back. >> reporter: but getting her new jersey income tax refund was another story. >> oh, my gosh, it was just -- it was pretty horrible. >> reporter: shepherd called the state and was told to submit additional paperwork. and she waited 90 more days. >> there was really no excuse for the delay. i immediately and professionally gave them anything they asked for, and they got it in a timely manner. >> reporter: after 90 days was up and still without answers, she called "nbc 10 responds."

>> i kept getting different stories. >> reporter: we immediately contacted the new jersey department of treasury. a spokesperson got right back to us, saying he's sent the issue to the right department. >> this is the new jersey division of taxation where you can check your refunds. >> reporter: days later she checked the website again. >> when i went there saturday morning, i was like, oh! it was unbelievable. i'm like, that harry hairston -- >> reporter: $882, just in time for college to start. now shepherd can give her son the celebration he deserves. >> thank you so much! unbelievable! amazing! amazing! nbc 10! >> glad she got her money back. we're going to add that money into our "nbc 10 responds" recovery counter. now we're standing at $82,670. i've got to tell you, i had to correct that on there. it's $82,000. >> that's a lot of money, folks.

we hit 88. still hot outside, though. still going to be hot through the weekend. again, the best chance of storms late day sunday. take a look at monday, 83, sunny. tuesday, 81 sunny. morning low in the mid-60s. so it's going to be really nice next week. i think this is the kind of relief that we've been waiting for. wednesday morning, morning lows, low 60s. afternoon high 83 degrees. sunny. thursday, 85 and sunny. with the low humidity it's going to feel very comfortable next week. then we go into friday, and now we're talking about next weekend. temperatures will be warming back to around 90 degrees. so we're going to start to build up the heat again next weekend, kind of like this weekend. but the in-between days, a lot of relief in the forecast. i think a lot of you are really going to like this. glenn will have a closer look at your neighborhood weather at 6:00. sky force 10 is live over breaking news in vineland. an accident involving a freight truck, a dump truck, and another

spectacle outside of the olympic venues. ryan lochte is sticking by his story that he and three teammates were held up at gun point on their way back to the athletes village from a party. >> a guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it, put it to my forehead and set get down. i was like -- i put my hands up, i was like, whatever. he took our money. he took my wallet. >> reporter: brazilian police say it was a drunken argument over a broken bathroom door. today lochte's three teammates are stranded in brazil after police seized their passports. two of them appeared to fold. after authorities forced them off their plane last night. they reportedly told investigators today the robbery was fabricated. police also gave their side of the story at a news conference and released this surveillance video from a rio gas station. investigators say the swimmers were drunk sunday morning when they damaged a bathroom, then tried to leave.
