i'm jim rosenfield. up first, a good-bye and a high pro-file visit three ways donald trump is making headlines at this hour. the republican presidential nominee toured flood-ravaged baton rouge this afternoon. louisiana's governor urged candidates not to make political stops in areas affected by flooding. hours earlier, trump's campaign's champl resigned in the wake of a campaign shakeup and revelations about his work in ukraine. all this happened as trump's first general election ad started airing across the country. including here in our area. as you may have noticed, just before this newscast began. so what kind of impact could this new ad have? nbc 10's rosemary connors is joining us in the studio with some insight. >> jim, the new ad focus on trump's immigration policy. it comes weeks after hillary clinton's campaign has dominated the airwaves here, spending millions of dollars in pennsylvania. trump is spending just under a million to air the ad in the

keystone state. today we showed it to viewers in our area. getting their first look at donald trump's first general election campaign ad, voters were mixed about the message. >> the borders secure, our families safe, change that makes america safe again, donald trump for president. >> reporter: for some, the ad reinforces their opinions about trump and clinton. for others, neither candidate will get their vote. what are you going to do come november? >> personally, i'm not going to do anything. it's going to be another day for me. probably be working. >> it is more bigotry and more fearmongering and more striking at those -- those fears that something could happen to my family, or my kids. i should freak out. >> i'm not even watching anymore. >> i don't think she has the ability to lead the country. i really don't. i know she's been in powerful positions, but i like donald trump more so because he's got a business background.

>> while donald trump watched tv, as secretary of state, hillary clinton negotiated a ceasefire in gaza. >> reporter: hillary clinton has been running attack ads for weeks in pennsylvania, focusing on trump's temperament and experience. political science experts like dr. matthew kirble of villanova university insists trump needs to respond to that directly. >> if donald trump is going to make inroads with those voters, he needs to reassure people he actually can be the president. the threshold issue for a lot of voters. >> now, with his new ad, trump is targeting voters in key battleground states, in addition to pennsylvania it will air in ohio, florida, and north carolina. he will spend about $4 million for the ad to air in those states. jim, back to you. >> rosemary connors, thank you. on the democratic side this evening, hillary clinton taking a break from the campaign trail today. but her supporters kept working. clinton's campaign brought some star power to philadelphia. that's after shawn patrick

thomas there, best known as the star of the movie "barbershop." >> whoever wins pennsylvania is probably going to win the whole election. within philadelphia, that's the biggest voting space for the democratic party. get out and vote. >> thomas visited with volunteers at a hillary clinton phone bank in philadelphia. now to the rio olympic games where today swimmer ryan lochte apologized for his behavior surrounding that now infamous night out. but he's not completely backing down. jacqueline london has been following new developments in rio since the story broke. she's joining us live with the latest. jackie? >> reporter: jim, ryan lochte did apologize for some things, but he stopped short of admitting to accusations of public drunkenness, and vandalism.

he did post something on social media, a statement. here's what it said. i want to apologize for my behavior last weekend, for not being more careful, and candid in how i described the events of that early morning. end quote. lochte told the "today" show's billy bush that he and three teammates were robbed at gun point outside a rio gas station. the swimmers were on their way back to the athletes village from a party. but brazilian police released this surveillance video from the gas station yesterday. investigators said the swimmers were drurng when they vandalized the bathroom and got into an argument with the armed security guards. the guards pointed their guns at the swimmers and asked them to pay for the damage. lochte went on to say in a statement, quote, it's traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country, with a language barrier, and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money, to let you leave. but regardless of the behavior of anyone else that night, i should have been much more responsible in how i handled myself, end quote.

two of lochte's teammates jack conger and gunnar bentz are back in the united states tonight. they were removed from their flights wednesday evening for more questioning in the investigation. the third teammate, jimmy feigen, agreed to pay $11,000 to a charity today. no word on when he's expected to return to the united states. it was in the last hour, nbc 10 has learned that the international olympic committee had set up a disciplinary commission to investigate the four swimmers' behaviors. they're going to look into it and see what they find. for now, from rio, i'm jacqueline london. jim, back to you. >> jacqueline, we'll see you soon. here at home, the zika virus now spreading in two places in florida. mosquitoes are now transmitting the virus in miami beach. that sparked the cdc to issue a new travel warning for the popular tourist destination, telling pregnant women to avoid the area. florida's governor says there

are five confirmed cases in the newest so-called zika zone. the first florida town on the list is north miami. meanwhile, the race to create a zika vaccine has a local company looking for human test subjects. they need volunteers willing to be infected with the virus this winter. deanna durante has the story, new at 6:00. >> reporter: it's the answer we got time and time again. >> i don't think i would be willing to do that. that doesn't sound like something i would be interested in. >> reporter: it seems like people aren't willing to have zika injected into their body, even if it would help develop a vaccine for the virus. >> i don't want the virus. i don't want to take that risk. >> reporter: then we found donna price. >> if i could, i would. >> reporter: it's personal. she's pregnant. >> my doctor was just informing me about florida. >> reporter: 20 companies across the world are working to develop a vaccine, and human testing has begun in the u.s. locally, inovia pharmaceuticals is one of those companies.

it's a dna vaccine they've developed. >> it has to be fully informed consent. they are told about all the potential side effects. >> reporter: the director of the montgomery county health department, researchers have little trouble in finding volunteers for studies such as they. ebola and zika taking the center stage, these vaccines could be sped up to hit the market. montgomery county has all four cases of zika, all who contracted the virus from travel. they're providing prevention kits to those who need them. the risks for spreading the virus here is low. >> if it helps. a new study, you know, to learn more. >> reporter: people are compensated for their time and travel but you're not going to get rich volunteering. here at inovio, they're looking for volunteers, men and women 18 to 36. you can apply online. deanna durante, nbc 10 news.

from our delaware bureau this evening, a man is charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend and stuffing her body in a trash can. idrees merritt is charged with killing hoskins. her body was found in a trash bin, she had been shot to death. a s.w.a.t. team took merritt into custody yesterday at a home near where hoskins' body was found. now to this new video of a frightening scene inside a philadelphia bar. look at this. a robber walking behind everyone sitting down there, and pointing that gun at them. this happened early wednesday morning inside frank's place bar in hunting park. the gunman had everyone hand over their money and phones before taking off. you're asked to call philadelphia police if you recognize him. coming up, the final word on the doping allegations against phillies slugger ryan howard, and what he has to say tonight. it's going to feel like

these small american flags. one for each american medalist, a patriotic garden, growing in the berks county grass. >> she got them at walmart one time. >> we spray painted one each gold, silver, bronze to reflect the medals. >> reporter: and today a big milestone for team usa. 100 medals as the epplers quickly run out of real estate. >> i thought, finally, we got to 100. >> reporter: they got the idea after seeing the vancouver olympics in person. they came home wanting to spread patriotic cheer. >> that spirit of the olympics is everything. it's awesome. >> reporter: and they've done it every olympic since. even neighbors on this block helping plant seeds of american pride. >> yeah. she said, do you want to put a flag out? i was like, sure. >> what's nice about the olympics, it makes our world just a little smaller for that

the bags were donated by several city groups. it celebrates the end of a five-day teacher orientation training program. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, a hot end to the week. at least the humidity is more bearable today. temperatures near 90 for delaware, lehigh valley, 87 for many of the new jersey neighborhoods. if you're in the pennsylvania suburbs, you're mostly in the mid-80s. plenty of sunshine. we'll take a closer look at the pennsylvania suburbs right now. unionville, 87 degrees. cochranville, 87. still hot. still feeling like summer. but the humidity, not as oppressive. 90 degrees north wales. 94 collegeville. 86 for washington. 85 degrees right now in bedminster. you'll notice a lot of relief coming next week. so i'll show you that in just a second. but it is in the forecast. this weekend, though, still near

90. still going to be hot. then we have some thunderstorms later this weekend. so your weekend looks good until we get to sunday evening. and sunday night for part of the area. thunderstorms will be moving in. and then that's followed by cooler and drier air. so relief does come as we go into next week. take a look at our august calendar. these are the 90-degree days we have shown in red. the 80-degree days shown in yellow. stretch of nice 80s moving in after the weekend. there you see, of course, with the long heat wave that we just technically ended. but we're now back at 90 degrees today. right now we're nice and dry. if you have the friday night plans, you don't need the umbrella. we're going to stay dry through tonight. and for your saturday. this is future weather. we go to the start of your weekend, saturday looks good, mostly sunny. can't rule out a stray shower saturday afternoon. not everybody, the chances are going to be slim, but there is a chance we could see one. sunday is mostly dry for the first half of the day, then the second half, take a look at the thunderstorms moving in.

that's by 5:00 p.m. mostly west of philadelphia. at that point moving into the philadelphia area by about 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. sunday evening. then heading to the shore and delaware beaches, about 10:00, 11:00 at night. if you're heading to the shore or delaware beaches for sunday, you're going to stay mostly dry. rain is not going to be there until late sunday. that is a cold front, though. cooler and drier air will be noticeable as we go into next week. that is the nice cooldown in the forecast. here's a look at your weekend forecast. around 90 saturday and sunday for philadelphia. saturday looks really good. sunday more clouds, late day thunderstorms. that's going to be the day for everyone to see those late day thunderstorms on sunday. saturday mostly dry. if you're heading to the shore, temperatures will be warm. but mostly around 80 degrees for brigantine. saturday coming in 79. 81 on sunday. very late thunderstorms by sunday night. amy? thanks so much, sheena. the eagles improve to 2-0 in the preseason. we hear from both the offense

i'm amy from csn. major league baseball has cleared ryan howard of any wrongdoing regarding an al jazeera report that he used performance-enhancing drugs. howard has sued the network over the report. howard released a statement saying in part, quote, the accusations from al jazeera came out of nowhere, and i was shocked and outraged by their

false claims. i welcome the investigation by major league baseball, and have an opportunity to clear my name. i'm glad this part of the process has concluded and look forward to holding the responsible people accountable for these false and defamatory claims in my ongoing litigation against al jazeera and its reporter. howard is in the lineup tonight batting fifth against the cardinals. adam morgan gets the start. coverage begins at 6:30 on csn. zach has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list after having right near surgery. the defense for the eagles has been the story. in last night's win, 17-0 over the steelers, the "d" came up with four interceptions. >> takeaways obviously is one of those points of emphasis that really can impact games, and seasons. so to begin those right now, it's just a good start for us
