summer storms. nbc 10 first alert radar shows rain and thunderstorms moving through our area. we'll tell you just how long they'll stick around. saying good-bye to rio. we're live with highlights from the final day of competition. and a look ahead to the olympics closing ceremony. hit in the face. some phillies fans are calling for some more safety measures after a child was struck by a foul ball at last night's game. nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now at 6:00, summer storms around. the wet weather is moving through parts of our area. nbc 10 at eakins oval this afternoon where it certainly helps to have an umbrella. a look at cape may where the rain is on its way.

all this wet weather is expected to bring much needed cooldowns to our region. good evening, i'm denise nakano. let's go straight to karen thomas who is tracking these storms. where is the heaviest rain falling right now? >> reporter: the heaviest rain just pushed out of central delaware and is on the move to parts of south jersey, specifically into parts of western cumberland county. there's a lot of lightning and convection embedded in this system. we've got heavy rain moving through philadelphia right now. a little bit of lightning, but the heavier convection is right here. wow. we can see this here. kent county, delaware, just pushed through a little while ago. we're talking about two inches of rainfall an hour as the system is moving quickly, but it was sort of a one-two punch for parts of kent county. dover, smyrna, talbot, milford. so ponding and we've got some flash flooding going on there with poor drainage area. this system is continuing to move to the east. that's why we say cape may,

in rio de janeiro, brazil, it was another really good day for team usa and local theets who were competing. let's go to the video and show you how successful it was. first up, villanova's kyle lowrie and his men's basketball teammates took on serbia. this one was never in doubt. the american team won 96-66. l lowry scored points. and the third straight medal for team usa. victory on the volleyball court for the americans. team usa came back to defeat russia. three of the team's members are penn state grads. brazil defeated italy to win the gold medal. olympic heartbreak for u.s. wrestler frank molinaro. the barnegat native made it all the way to the class but eventually came up two points short falling to a wrestler from

italy. right now the countdown is on until the olympics closing ceremony. its a little stormy right here and windy. hopefully that will clear in less than two hours. the stadium will be filled with tens of thousands crowded in to see the incredible performance that's expected tonight. let's go to the studio in philadelphia now. lauren mayk talks with someone about how difficult it is to put on something like a closing ceremony. >> this woman works in event production in the pharmaceutical industry now, but she has an olympic history because working on those ceremonies is incredibly stressful but also rewarding when this big moment arrives. from home we see the pageantry and the pride. sarah grub knows what it takes behind the scenes to put on a ceremony like this. >> for probably two months we worked 18-hour days. >> reporter: she worked in operations and logistics at

events around the world. on her home memories of the 2010 vancouver olympic games where she worked on the opening ceremony. >> when you see the show, you amazingly forget about how no sleep you had and how much hard work you've done and all that kind of thing just disappears when you see the audience reaction and the things that we practiced so many times actually working. >> reporter: but not everything goes as planned. like the lighting of the olympic cauldron in vancouver. >> it was supertense and, of course, i was in the stadium. you wouldn't know this at home, we actually ran out of music in the stadium because of the delay. they were able to cover that up. it was the most intense moment of my career. >> reporter: grubb also helped put on part of the closing ceremonies in london where they handed things over to rio. >> at the end of the day, it's a total live event. you have to be able to roll with what's happening. i will be watching to see what i think the problems are, then i'll probably be texting my friends that are in rio saying,

is everything okay? >> she says one of the big differences between opening and closing ceremonies is the time to set up. you have all that time before the games to build things for an opening. she said the closing is quicker. more like setting up for a super bowl show. jacqueline? >> lauren, thank you. and all eyes, of course, will be on the stadium here in brazil tonight with that closing ceremony. so much anticipation. and coming up in a few minutes, i'll have an interview with english gardner from south jersey. the first interview i had with her since she won gold in the 4x100-meter relay. she's waited a long time to stand up on that podium and hear the national anthem. she finally got that chance. my interview with her coming up in a few minutes. denise. >> all right, jacqueline, we'll see you in a bit. new at 6:00, firefighters are getting treated after a propane tank exploded in bucks county. fire investigators say several

tanks caught fire at a barn-like garage at tenth avenue in ben salem this afternoon. the firefighters are expected to recover from minor injuries. also no at 6:00, police in south jersey are looking for this suspect accused in a shooting that left a man dead and a young girl hurt. burlington county prosecutors have charged samuel james with murder. authorities say james shot byron turner in the head outside a burlington city home saturday night. a 5-year-old girl was hurt while running from the gunfire. she was not shot. hit by a foul ball. this dramatic scene unfolded at last night's phillies game. a young girl was carried out of citizens bank park after phillies shortstop freddy galvas hit a foul ball striking her in the face. aundrea cline-thomas is live at the ballpark where she caught up with fans and a player at the game. and some are calling for more netting to protect fans. >> reporter: that's right. players are actually leading

that charge calling for more netting to better protect fans, but some of the fans we spoke to today say that would actually hinder their experience. the bottom of the eighth with two outs. the phillies freddy galvas is at bat when i had hits a foul ball that strikes the girl in the face. you see the heartache in everyone including galvas as she's carried out of the stadium. >> it is scary to think that a baseball could actually hit your child in the game. >> reporter: is raising concerns about if there's enough netting to protect the fans. >> it's hard to dodge a ball coming that fast. i mean, it's coming so fast and a big group of people ap and some people are trying to catch it, i guess, some are trying to dodge it. >> reporter: in a statement the phillies say it has already extended the netting to the sides of the dugout near home plate and would consider further expansion. in that statement they also said that the phillies would determine if more netting is needed at the end of this

here in rio de janeiro last night there were a lot of incredible moments on the track. for south jersey's english gardner, that moment came when she was finally able to stand on top of the podium and hear the national anthem for winning gold in the 4x100-meter relay. a long time coming and so well

deserved. ♪ >> when you were standing on the podium last night and you heard the anthem, take me there. >> i didn't know what i was going to do. i didn't know if i was going to cry, if i was going be excited. i just remember that was like i remember standing on my bed and watching maurice greene and tori and pretty much everybody that came before me, i watched them sing that anthem on the podium. in my head, i said, i'm here. there's some little girl at home sitting watching and she's going to want to be in my position. >> remarkably in that relay just before the race, english gardner could not find her right shoe. so she had to borrow fellow runner allyson felix's right shoe. she tried it on. it was too big. it was a custom shoe for allyson felix. she had to double up on her

that area simply because it looks likely flash flooding could happen there. now a heavy cell pushing back into cumberland county and moving straight into cape may county and parts of southern atlantic county. heavy rain here. the good muse is the system is moving to the east so it's not sticking around. however, you still want to take it easy because there's thunder and lightning and some heavy rain embedded there. the rest of the area, especially philadelphia, you can see some of the heavier darker green indicating some heavy rain still falling in parts of the area. this system is going to continue pushing west to east. as it does, we can expect embedded thunderstorms here that you see just moving in to atlantic county. edging closer to 322 up here in glassboro. as we get closer to the midnight hour, 10:00, 11:00, we expect this system to head out.

high pressure building in and you'll feel welcome relief as this makes its way out of here. tomorrow, sunshine and lower dew point. less humidity. already seeing the rain relief. temperatures coming down up to the north and to the west. right here in vineland, 72 degrees. that has fallen. as i mentioned, 89 was our high temperature. we're now down to 77 degrees. dew point is still fairly high. but dew point temperatures will be dropping as well. here's a look at the ten-day. this is what we're talking about in terms of our temperature reading. check out the overnight lows, tomorrow, tuesday, wednesday in philadelphia. they are in the 60s. you are seeing that correctly. we're talking temperatures back more closer to average. high temperatures this time of year. we do warm up towards the end of the week and we do expect the humidity to come back into the forecast, but this cold front that's moving through right now is certainly going to bring us a more comfortable feel as we start off our next work week.
