neighborhood. nbc 10's mondique braxton has more. >> reporter: hi, vai. police returned to the neighborhood to examine the victims' car. people on the block are shocked the 35-year-old victim was murdered in front of his wife, six children, and the wife was shot as well. we watched homicide detectives examine the scene here in the 7300 block of north 7th street for clues overnight. police tell us they believe a shotgun was used to kill an adult male and wound his wife in a second floor rear bedroom around 1:00 this morning. three casings were found there. we spoke with neighbors as they came out to see what had happened. >> i never seen any suspicious activity in the house or nothing. i just moved here like 2 1/2 months ago. i never seen her. nothing out of the ordinary.

>> reporter: police tell us the deceased male was 28 price. they do believe he was targeted. we also got a lock at the alley here behind the 3700 block. we saw that police tell us this is where they found a shotgun, a sack of live shotgun shells were also discovered, along with a knit skull cap that may have been used as a mask. the children range in age from 5 to 13. they were seen leaving the home this morning with their grandparents. and we just got an update that the 40-year-old female, the children's stepmother, was shot twice and right now is listed in critical condition at temple. live for now in hunting park, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. three miles away in port richmond another family is recovering after a home invasion on east lipin cot street. two armed men pistol whipped a man inside. he is in the hospital but is expected to be okay. the attack happened just before 11:30. the robbers got away with cash.

police say a child was inside the home but was not hurt. one person is dead and another in critical condition after a fire trapped them inside this house in germantown. nbc 10 on the scene on east clapier street. this happened last night. neighbors rushed toward the heavy smoke but couldn't get inside. firefighters arrived to pull the victims out. >> the smoke was too thick, they didn't get in. >> medics took three other people to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation. investigators are looking at how this fire started. and two firefighters are recovering after being injured in a propane tank explosion in bucks county. investigators tell us several propane tanks caught fire in a garage yesterday in bensalem township. happening now, jerry sandusky is back in court to resume his appeal hearing. the former penn state assistant

football coach is trying to have his child sex abuse conviction overturned. he testified that he never molested boys and that he wasn't properly represented at his trial in 2012. if the appeal is successful, the judge could order a new trial. one of the suspects in a deadly street racing accident in northeast philadelphia is facing a judge. police say ron ferrell was racing chris bloomfield last july through somerton when bloomfield crashed into a tree. police say bloomfield walked away before emergency crews arrived. he has a hearing scheduled tomorrow. farrell will be arraigned today. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. just a drop dead gorgeous day around our region. a live look at roxboro from our presidential city camera. comfortable weather conditions have returned. but how long will it stick around?

a gas main will cut down some lanes of traffic in cherry hill. pse&g is doing the work. the project should be finished by saturday. for updates, tap the nbc 10 app. happening today, crews in north philadelphia will be demolishing the west sedgely avenue bridge. the demolition starts at 6:00 p.m. tonight and expected to end by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. officials say neighbors should expect minimal noise during construction work. the bridge is being replaced. officials say the entire project should be done by the end of the year. ♪ the games in rio are in the history books today. a spectacular fireworks display marked the end of the closing ceremony last night. the fireworks shot from the top of the rio stadium and samba singers brought the crowd inside to their feet. here is your final olympic medal

the first pitch yesterday. also at citizens bank park, a call for change after two people were hurt by foul balls during phillys games over the weekend. it started at saturday night's home game. a girl was hit by a line drive off the bat of freddie galves. the little girl was taken to the childrens hospital of philadelphia. on sunday a woman was hit in the face by another foul ball. fans say they're worried whether there's enough net to go protect the fans. >> it's scary to think a baseball could actually hit your child in the game. >> before the season started, the phillies were one of 19 teams that extended the netting to the sides of the dugout near home plate. but now they could be doing more. the team released this statement that reads in part, we decided earlier this season to consider the possibility of further expansion next season. a mother and son find themselves in a frightening

distraction, that they want to go as far as they possibly can to make sure there's no possible conflict of interest. >> that was hallie jackson reporting. meanwhile trump's running mate, indiana governor mike pence, will hold a rally in pipersville, bucks county, tomorrow afternoon at worth and company, a mechanical contractor there. earlier this month pence hosted a town hall event in lancaster. a crash left a mother and son dangling from a florida overpass. the rescue was caught on camera. witnesses say the woman was driving this car yesterday before she lost control and went over a concrete barrier. firefighters had to use slings in order to secure the car and make sure it didn't fall any further. rescuers also had to break out the back windows to pull the mother and her son to safety. you see them doing that right there. the two are wearing their seatbelts and suffered minor injuries. the mother was charged with careless driving. a paraglider is dead after

slamming into a church on sunday in draper. police say the 57-year-old pilot crashed into a roof of a church building. police are investigating whether the crash could have been caused by either a malfunction with the glider or a medical condition of its operator. the church was evacuated and services were cancelled. this morning, nine people are hurt in ohio after a driver accidentally plowed into a crowd of people at an outdoor concert near cleveland. police say the driver was a 74-year-old woman. she accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes while trying to get out of her parking space. six people were taken to the hospital, two of them seriously hurt. so far charges have not been filed against the driver. police say they're still reviewing this case. and in central california, firefighters think they have stopped a wildfire from spreading to a historic landmark. the flames have stopped three

miles from hearst cancel. tours there have been cancelled. 46 buildings have been destroyed by the flames and hundreds more are threatened. south texas is cleaning up after heavy rain pounded the austin area wednesday night. several people had to be rescued from flooding to the south. high waters swept through streets and across bridges. check out this video of a dust storm rolling through phoenix, arizona. the storm yesterday was fueled by wind, wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour. the dust moved across two major interstates and caused problems for drivers with visibility. the airport had to stop planes from taking off and landing during the worst of this dust storm. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. finally we've gotten the heat and the humidity out of here. temperatures now in the 70s. 77 in philadelphia. but the humidity is way down from what it has been much of

we have breaking news out of pennsauken, camden county. police have made an arrest in the murder of a 2-year-old boy. the child died of energy injuries. the mother's boyfriend faces homicide charges. the police came to the home on route 38 saturday night after a 911 call. nbc 10's cydney long is working on the story, look for reports from her later today on nbc 10 news. police continue to search for clues after a double shooting leaves a man dead and his wife in critical condition. the father was gunned down in front of his six young children in front of their home. nbc 10's monique braxton is live on the scene. >> reporter: hey, vai. investigators tell us the children found inside this home when gunshots were fired were between the ages of 5 and 13.

in a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, glenn. breaking news right now in the ryan lochte olympics controversy. speedo just announced moments ago it's dropping its sponsorship of the swimmer. the company will donate lochte's $50,000 fee to children in brazil. the olympic medallist admitted to lying about being robbed in rio. a bridge failure caused a freight train carrying coal to derail north of texas. a portion of the bridge collapsed 6:00 p.m. local time yesterday, causing 26 cars to leave the track. five of them fell into the water below. luckily, no one was hurt. firefighters in washington state are battling a handful of large wildfires that sparked over the weekend and remain uncontained this morning. two of the fires that broke out yesterday are now together being called the spokane complex fire. flames are threatening dozens of homes in the area. at least five buildings where burned. crews on the scene say the fire could be as large as 500 acres.

and a second person is now charged in the murder of a penn state professor who was pushed off a cliff and fell 80 feet to his death. on saturday, donnell guire was arraigned in the death. george ishlor jr. already faces charges. the professor worked at penn state. police said the two plotted to kill him because they thought they would benefit from a will the professor recently signed. three catholic churches are closed for good next month in the archdiocese of philadelphia. st. john of the cross, st. cecilia, and montedella church are shutting their doors. the archdiocese blames financial problems. the buildings were only being used occasionally for mass as well as weddings and also

funerals. from the nbc 10 delaware bureau, a church is stanning up to vandals. the first unitarian church of wilmington dedicated two more banners in support of the black lives matter movement. since may vandals have targeted several of these banners. the church has long been active in racial justice, women's rights, and lgbtq initiatives. >> we actually, as i say in the black lives matter movement, we are a leaderful movement. we have many people who have been involved who understand what we're doing and how we are doing it. >> the church says it's working with police to install motion sensors. church leaders say every time a banner is havenvandalized, a don will be made to the black lives matter cause. landon le chance will travel

trip to trip the drug company pfizer is adding another company to its chain. it's buying the cancer drug company medivation for $15 billion. medivation owns the rights to a prostate cancer treatment and other cancer drugs in development. the boards of both companies approved the deal. hyundai and mitsubishi are recalling thousands of cars for problems that could lead to crashes.

federal officials say hyundai is recalling 2013 elantras because a brake pedal stopper could fail, which could cause the transmission to shift out of park without applying the brake pedal. mitsubishi is recalling 2015 and 2016 outlanders and other cars because of the problem. a fellow judge blocks bathroom rules intended to allow transgender students to use the restroom of their choice. the judge for the northern district of texas granted a weig nationwide injunction yesterday. it temporarily blocks the guidance from the obama administration covering students in public schools. 13 states including texas appealed to the courts, arguing the directive is unconstitutional. in may the federal government directed the public schools to allow transgender student to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. kobe bryant is getting back to business, this time off the

they need to be replaced every ten years. there's also a new line of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms where the batteries last for ten years. >> i saw that in the e-mail i received. and you don't have to replace them, right? >> correct. they're sealed within the unit. even if you could get to them, you couldn't use it in another product, which is very great. and it gives you an end of life warning for the alarm that signals when it's time to take it down and put up a new one. it really is simple. >> because one of the tragedies, in fires, you go in, firefighters do the investigation, they found out there was a fire alarm but the batteries were dead or there were never batteries in the fire alarm. what's the biggest mistake people make when this comes to safety? >> they don't test their batteries. you should test them once a month.

i've any been on a call where there was a fatality in a home with a working smoke detector. >> that's amazing. gigi, i also want to ask you about carbon monoxide detectors. that worries people because you can't smell it, you can't detect it, the nose can't detect it. >> correct. 450 people die each year from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. you can't taste it, you can't smell it. a carbon monoxide alarm gives you early warning to tell you, hey, this isn't the flu, it's carbon monoxide and you need to get up and get out. and that alarm that i showed you, the cool thing about this is it has a digital readout that tells you the highest level of carbon monoxide that was read, which is great information for first responders. you know, you can find all this information too at the forasaferplace.com website. it's an at lowe's of northeast

yesterday. but the temperature is down and the humidity is down. that's that double effect that we have here. going up to about 85 degrees on wednesday. and then it starts to get hotter later on during the week. but for tomorrow, look at these high temperatures. below average for this time of the year, chestnut hill, 81. redding, 81 degrees. we'll see a lot of similar temperatures. again, very low humidity. dover, 81 degrees. that's about as good as it gets. as far as rain chances, this is through the rest of the week and into saturday. look at dover. zero. absolutely zero chance. atlantic city, zero chance for the rest of the week. you don't see that very often at this time of the year. the tropics are getting a little

moretivity. the peak of hurricane season historically is mid-august to mid-october, so we're getting right into the peak. we have fiona out there in the atlantic. it's not very strong. it's expected to move into the northwest and, if anything, weaken over the next few days. there will be other systems developing this week. we'll talk about the tropics more as we get into wednesday. 90 degrees on friday. the humidity will be back up as well. so we can't say that the entire week is going to be very comfortable. by the weekend, we're still basically dry. and then the first decent chance of any kind of showers and storms comes on monday. and by that time, we're starting to keep more of an eye on the tropics, because this is the time of year and things are becoming more active.
