earthquake said the scene looked like dante's inferno. the quake was centered 100 miles northeast of rome. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live in the digital operations center monitoring the new information and the video coming in. pam, what do you have for us? >> reporter: tracy, the strong earthquake caused homes to collapse on top of residents as they slept. rescue workers in central italy say the death toll is now up to 73. first responders raced to dig survivors from the rubble, but the death toll is expected to rise as crews reach homes in harder-to-reach areas. the mayor of hard-hit town, amatrice said the town isn't hearing more. they joined red cross workers in the rescue effort. several large aftershocks followed the initial quake, which hit at 3:36 a.m., italian time. take a look at this. one survivor was buried under so much rubble, only their arm was

visible. a rescue worker was able to talk to that person and keep them calm until they could be rescued. the quake hit during the summer, when populations of the normally small towns are swelled by vacationers. a rhode island college basketball team is in rome for pre-season training. an assistant coach says the quake woke them up from a sound sleep. >> it felt like your room was shaking and swaying, you know? and almost like someone was underneath your bed, like pushing up on the mattress, and the mattress was kind of shaking that way. and the room felt like the entire building was swaying back and forth. but it lasted a long time. it lasted over 30 seconds. >> pope francis led prayer vigils for the victims during his general audience today. the pope told the crowd that he was stunned by the devastation and said he wanted to express his pain and solidarity with the victims. italy's premier said in time of

trouble, italy shows its true faith. he said, quote, no family, no city, no hamlet will be left alone. from the digital operations center, i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. back here at home, a man is dead after he was shot and killed during a break-in overnight in philadelphia. police say an ex-boyfriend tried twice to force his way into a woman's row home on marco street in west philadelphia. the second time, he fought with the couple and the woman's current boyfriend shot the intruder in the chest. he died at the hospital. the ex's children with the woman were in the home when the shooting happened. police interviewed the mom and are now looking for the current boyfriend. a 21-year-old man is in the hospital after being shot outside a philadelphia home. police were called to south 32nd street in gray's ferry just after midnight. the victim was standing outside a friend's house when a bullet struck him. other bullets shattered a glass storm window in a door. the victim is in stable condition, so far, police have not arrested anyone. philadelphia police are looking into a shooting that apparently stemmed from a fight

in university city. sky force 10 was over the scene last night. investigators say a man was shot while a group of women was fighting at 39th and ludlow. the shooting victim is in stable condition. now to camden county, where a husband is charged with murdering his wife. the young mother was found stabbed to death in collinswood. witnesses say they heard joseline perez and timothy murphy fighting in their apartment at the heights of callingswood friday night. the couple's three children were home during the attack, but were not physically hurt. a man accused of beating a toddler to death in a dispute over groceries is being held on $1 million bail this morning. zachary tucochi stood with his head down in court yesterday as prosecutors talked about the final moments of his victim's life. prosecutors say he shoved his girlfriend saturday night in their pennsauken apartment because he was upset with the food that she bought.

and when her 2-year-old started to cry, he allegedly beat the boy to death. afterwards, the toddler's family says they wished new jersey still had the death penalty. >> because he should be put to sleep. because he killed my grandson, so he should be killed. he shouldn't the be sitting in no cell for the rest of his life, eating, getting phone calls and writing letters. he should be dead, because my grandson is dead. >> reporter: the boy's mother was also at the courthouse today, but said she could not bear being inside the courtroom for his hearing. new video this morning could help police catch a suspect wanted for multiple sexual assaults in philadelphia. the surveillance video shows a man reaching out and touching a woman inappropriately, as he rode past her on a bike, on south 8th street just after midnight on saturday, august 13th. at least three other similar incidents have happened in the same part of town this month. investigators think the same suspect may be behind them all. more new video. this time it shows a robber in philadelphia's southwark

neighborhood. a man grabbed a woman from behind and choked her until she lost consciousness. when she came to, she said he was stealing her purse. that's when bystanders chased the man away. if you recognize the suspect, call 911. sky force 10 over a law enforcement exercise in montgomery county. the county sheriff's bomb squad joined the s.w.a.t. teams from lower marion, abingdon and northtown for an fbi training exercise. they practiced searching for suspects on the water and dealing with possible booby traps. well, it is the first full day of freedom for a man wrongly convicted of murder and rape. a man wrongly convicted of murder and rape, he's enjoying his first morning as a free man after being locked up for 25 years. nbc 10 was there as anthony wright left the correctional facility in northeast philadelphia, yesterday. he's been behind bars for 25 years. the jury acquitted the 44-year-old after dna evidence proved his innocence in the death of a 77-year-old woman in

1991. that evidence linked the crime to a man who died in 2013. wright thanked the innocence project for helping him win a new trial. >> i feel like i'm the luckiest guy in the world. i feel like they're my guardian angels. i feel like they saved my life. i want to do whatever my granddaughters want to do. i want to do whatever my grandson want to do. i want to just be grandpa. i just want to be dad! >> wright is meeting with the jurors who acquitted him right now, in center city. nbc 10's monique braxton is there for that meeting. she will have a live report with no doubt what is an emotional day for so many people. that's ahead at 11:30. the next step in creating community schools in philadelphia gets started today. nine schools will be the first to become the hubs for social health and other neighborhood services. this is all part of mayor jim kenney's new community schools initiatives. the mayor will meet soon with the newly hired school coordinator and then support staff, as they start a two-week training boot camp. the schools will look at the

needs in their neighborhoods and develop plans to meet those. they'll start implementing those plans in december. the new jersey department of education will not stop a school from closing in eveson township. the school board voted to shut florence evans elementary next year. the mayor and city council sued to try to keep the school open, because many parents feel the longer commute to other schools would be a hardship. they cited steep drops in enrollments and a deficit of nearly $100 million a year for reasons for closing the school. lots of sunshine and the humidity is still low, but it's definitely warmer today. here's a live look at boathouse row in philadelphia. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. glenn? >> yeah, tracy, we've still got some nice weather out here. the sky not quite as blue as it has been over the last couple of

more on african-americans and latinos. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> you can follow the presidential race and fact check the latest claims made by both campaigns on our nbc 10 app. water rescues are underway in northeast iowa from overnight flooding. 7 inches of rain fell and record flooding is being report there had. several storms also left behind damage in the northwestern part of the state. storms moved through yesterday, taking down trees and power lines and damaging homes. residents say what started as rain quickly turned into thunderstorms, then hail, then high winds. officials expect cleanup efforts to last days. and heavy rain from that same system last night swamped parts of downtown omaha, nebraska. the storm packed high winds, which toppled trees and power lines here, too. the storm also knocked out power to some 19,000 homes. and in the meantime, our great weather continues.

80 degrees in philadelphia. nothing but some high, thin clouds, sunshine reported all across the area. 77 degrees in the lehigh valley. let's see what's going on at the shore right now. the ocean temperature, 74 degrees. a little bit of a land breeze, at least temporarily, allowing ventnor to get up to 84, summer point, 81. cape may point, 78 degrees. so it's another beautiful day at the shore. temperatures are going to be going up. 83 yesterday, at least 85 today. maybe a couple of degrees higher than that, and maybe close to 90 tomorrow. and then friday, looks like the mid-90s plus high humidity making it feel like it's 100 or even a little hotter. nothing on the radar close by. the nearest showers have just moved past chicago. and the remnants of some of that could hit parts of the area

tomorrow. so, nothing later today or tonight or tomorrow morning, as we go through the day tomorrow, there we are. just some isolated, mainly light showers. that's not very impressive, is it? and that's about our only rain risk for the next week or so. tomorrow, we're going to start noticing the humidity a little bit more. so packard park, 89, feeling like 90. newtown square, 86. feeling like 88. same thing with why wine misting. got to have high humidity for that kind of thing to happen. and also longport, 79, feeling like 86 degrees. now, in the tropics, gaston is still way out in the eastern atlantic, likely to become a hurricane. hermine has not even developed yet, but it's pretty close to

puerto rico. it is likely to develop. this is not the center of it. the center of it would be up in this area. and the computer models are showing this storm, whether it develops or not, having an impact. gaston, in the meantime, looks like it's going to be tracking way up to the northwest, in the middle of the atlantic ocean. so at least for the next week, we're not concerned about that. but hermine, that's a different story. these different computer models tending to agree on a track through the bahamas, where the ocean is very warm and if other conditions are favorable, storms can develop and intensify very quickly. and then, a threat to florida, practically all of the computer models have it, at least very, very close to the state of florida. and then going into the gulf of mexico, you don't see any solutions taking it up the east

coast. so we kind of remove that possibility and florida and the gulf of mexico, the main targets, coming up. as we go through the next few days, temperatures are going up. humidity will be going up with it. so the temperature jump, from 85 to 92, well, it's going to feel even more dramatic than that. because we're now 85 degrees, but we're going to be feeling like it's mid-90s in the lehigh valley, but friday. and close to 100 in philadelphia. the jersey shore may be getting up near 90 on friday, too, with a bit of a land breeze. that's going to be the critical thing there. and as we go through the rest of the ten days, there's the 94 friday, not quite as hot or humid over the weekend. but still pretty warm, and close to 90 degrees on monday, as well. >> thanks, glenn. from the pool to the stage, olympic swimmer michael phelps has hung up his gold medal an c

the frantic race is on to save lives in italy after a

powerful earthquake has killed dozens and trapped people under piles of rubble. a powerful earthquake devastated a string of mountainous towns in central italy, trapping residents under piles of rubble, killing at least 73 people. the 6.2 magnitude quake buried residents under rubble as they slept. nbc's lucy cavanaugh reports from a hard-hit town of amatrice. >> reporter: good morning, guys. i'm in the center of amatrice. this is a town that was one of the most devastated by the earthquake in italy this morning. you can see here, a car completely crushed. this building in shambles. residents were asleep in their beds. it was about 3:30 a.m. local time when this earthquake hit. i felt it as far away as 100 miles away in rome. and rescue workers have been racing against the clock to try to rescue those who are still trapped beneath the rubble. there have been rescue dogs here, trying to smell any

potential people who are trapped beneath, workers coming in. officials pleading for rescue supplies, blood donations, food, water, medicine. anything that needs to be brought up to these small towns. it is the worst possible time for an earthquake here in italy. tourist season. people coming here to visit relatives and loved ones. so when these earthquakes struck these unassuming people, many of them were completely caught unaware, a devastating day for italy, and definitely a devastating day here in amatrice. guys, back to you. >> back here at home, happening now, a philadelphia man is enjoying his first day of freedom after spending more than two decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. and he's spending part of that day meeting with some of the jurors who set him free. nbc 10's monique braxton is near where the meeting is happening. she joins us live from center city. monique, what can you tell us? >> reporter: after spending his first night of freedom with family and friends, anthony wright came here to center city.

we understand jurors wanted to meet wright and his family, after acquitting him based on dna evidence that proved his innocence. we could hear the applause of jurors when the 44-year-old arrived. we were kept in a separate room, though. the jury believed he did not rape and kill a 77-year-old woman nicetown woman back in 1991. wright was released from the correctional facility yesterday. he spent 25 years in prison and was exonerated after the innocence project got involved. during the re-trial, wright's attorneys pushed dna evidence that tied the rape and death to another man, who died in south carolina in 2013. the philadelphia district attorney's office did not comment on this new verdict, but they did thank jurors for their service. on our evening newscast, you're going to hear what jurors and wright have to say. live now from center city, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> now checking out our nbc 10

ft. washington, 80. perksy, 80. new hope, 82 degrees. so, it is another beautiful day out there, but it's the last sort of comfortable one. nothing more than high, thin clouds around right now. and the clouds thicken up in ohio, the nearest rain moving into indiana right now. so nothing but sunshine this afternoon. temperatures getting at least into the mid-80s. tonight, you may notice, it's not going to be as cool or comfortable as it has in the last couple of days. and that is going to be the case throughout the area. the lehigh valley, it was down in the 50s in the last couple of mornings, only in the 60s tomorrow morning. that's an indication of that humidity coming up. we'll see if there are any showers with that, and if the heat's going to last through the weekend, with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> glenn, we'll see you then. thank you. vice president joe biden is in turkey this morning. he arrived this morning for talks that will include

discussions on recent developments in syria. just hours before the vice president's arrival, turkey launched an operation to clear a syrian border town from isis militants. now, when turkey's president meets with biden, he's expected to demand the extradition of a cleric who lives in the poconos. turkey blames gulen for a failed coup attempt this summer. gulen is a longtime critic of the turkish government. we have new details of a crash in which a cab blowed into a busy street corner in san francisco. we've learned three people were critically hurt, including the taxi's driver. his cab took out a shoe shine stand and a kiosk yesterday. police are still trying to learn what caused him to lose control. now to the growing anger over the skyrocketing price of epi pens. epi pens are used to ward off potentially fatal allergic reactions and the cost has skyrocketed 400% in recent years. and as nbc's tom costello

reports, it's prompting questions and outrage. >> reporter: it's called anaphylactic shock, a fast, life-threatening allergic reaction. millions of at-risk americans and schools keep epi pens close by in case of just such an emergency. 9-year-old joshua fernandez is allergic to nuts. but over eight years, the price to pharmacies for an epi pen 2-pack has skyrocketed from $100 to $600. and the pens must be replaced yearly. now, nbc news has found that over the same period, mylan pharmaceuticals raised executive pay and compensation by over 600%. >> i'm struggling to provide basic life-saving medication for my child. and the money i pay for this medication is going to somebody's paycheck or some crazy profit margin. >> reporter: in congress, both republicans and democrats are alleging price gouging, calling for an investigation. senator amy klobuchar's daughter, abigail, has relied on

whatever that initial shock was. >> mike says he was not aware the caller was fake. it's not clear what discipline the producer or the staff involved will face, if any. nbc 10 could not reach management for a comment. new video shows how the military pulled off a unique training exercise in alaska this week. yesterday, two transport planes dropped more than 475 paratroopers over joint base elmdorf richardson. the training is meant to train officers how to seize an airmen in enemy territory. it took three months of training and preparation. the olympic countdown is officially on in japan. tokyo's governor brought the olympic flag into the city at the end of each games, the flag is passed on to the mayor of the next olympic city. it's a tradition that has been carried out since 1988. japan's government will mint coins to mark the olympic handoff from rio to tokyo. the coins symbols are

data also shows cancer now causes more deaths among asian and hispanic americans than heart disease. heart disease is still the leading cause of death for african-americans and caucasians. a new penn state study finds most pregnant women believe they will return to their former body weight eventually, unlike women who gain weight for other reasons. researchers found most expectant mothers were also surprised at how morning sickness and fatigue interfered with their planned diet and exercise routines. some new data suggests many high school seniors are not ready for college. according to the folks behind the a.c.t. tests, only 38% of graduating seniors met the exam's college-ready benchmarks in at least three of four core subjects of english, math, reading, and science. a decline in scores is expected, because the pool of testtakers has increased sharply over the last year. more than 2 million seniors took the a.c.t. test this year. this week's wednesday's child is filled with energy and

the last of the comfortable days for a while, we're 80 degrees. still pretty tolerable humidity in philadelphia. close to 80 in other parts of the area, like in delaware. let's go to the neighborhoods there. and we find 80 at newark. 78 in wilmington. 82 in claymont. 81 in odessa. towards the beaches, 79 in lewis. 76 in rehoboth beach. 77 at dewey beach. a little bit of a wind off the water, but not a strong sea breeze today. nothing on the radar close by. we have some showers and they are getting into indiana. not exactly headed this way. the heat and humidity are going to be coming back. the temperature going up significantly, and the humidity going up significantly, and that's going to make for an even bigger jump in the way it's going to feel.

so let's say we're at 85 this afternoon, feeling like about 85. by friday, 94, feeling like 100 plus. it's going to feel 15 degrees warmer on friday than it does today. and this is the way it's going to feel tomorrow. high temperature, highest feels-like temperature, chestnut hill, 87. feeling like 89. upper makefield, same numbers. 87 and 89. easton, 88 and 89. of course, the humidity not quite as high in the lehigh valley. other places much higher towards the jersey shore. longport, 79. feels like 86. and we're going to be going up from there. the remnants of fiona, still hanging around in the atlantic. gaston strengthening in the eastern atlantic, maybe becoming a hurricane. and this, hermine, not a storm yet. not even named yet.

hurricane hunter plane in there right now, trying to find a circulation. now, it has found strong winds. tropical storm force winds. but this is not the center. the center is up in here. so that's why it's not a tropical storm yet. if the center of the circulation was right there, it would be a tropical storm, immediately. here's the -- what you call the visible satellite picture, and that's where a little bit of the circulation would be. so it may not be named immediately, but it is expected to be named and intensify. gaston, in the meantime, looks like it's headed to the northwest, down into the middle of the atlantic, hermine, if it does develop, these various computer models taking it through the bahamas and a definite threat into florida. florida's not been hit by a hurricane since 2004, 2005.

that's the longest stretch of not being hit in recorded history of florida. and then, looks like it would be coming somewhere into the gulf of mexico. we don't have any computer models now taking it up the east coast of the united states. so that is pretty much off the board. a big area of high pressure that's going to block it from doing that. here we are with the temperatures going up in philadelphia area. look, 94 on friday. but at the jersey shore, we're generally in the upper 70s for most of the afternoons and the next couple of days with the sea breezes coming in. and you'll see the effect of the sea breezes saturday and sunday, too. so it looks like it's going to be a really nice weekend at the jersey shore. it also looks dry, all the way through, the only exception could be in the lehigh valley, a chance of a brief shower tomorrow afternoon. we have it dry through monday

and tuesday and then chances of rain really start increasing in the middle of next week, and of course, it depends on what happens with that tropical moisture, if any of it starts to come up this way. but it wouldn't come up with this way before the middle of next week, at least.

we are following breaking news out of afghanistan. nbc news is reporting that police are responding to an attack on american university in kabul, afghanistan. there have been reports of large explosions and gunfire, and students at the school are tweeting that they are trapped. some are saying they have been injured and are on the way to the hospital. others say the force of one of the explosions knocked them to the ground. we're working to gather more details. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app. that's where we'll post updates on this breaking news. coming up this afternoon at 3:00, it's "ellen" with anne hathaway and steven tyler. and now an update on our top story we're following all day. the death toll now stands at 73 after a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck italy. the strong quake caused homes to collapse on top of residents as they slept. rescuers are bringing sniffer dogs, earth movers, and other heavy equipment into the quake zone to help in the effort to find victims and survivors. we'll keep you updated on that story, as well, on the app.

now let's get you updated on our forecast. >> still a pretty nice day here. the humidity is tolerable, especially compared to what we've been going through during the month of august. up into the mid-80s or a little bit higher today. the temperature significantly higher tomorrow and the humidity will be definitely higher. so it will at least feel like the low 90s. by friday, that 94 should be feeling like about 100, maybe even a little higher. over the weekend, not quite as humid, but still fairly hot and fairly humid. more like early august weather, rather than late august. and the heat continues into early next week. one of the things you do not see are the raindrops. not until the middle of next week. so the dry pattern looks like it's going to continue. in the meantime, we concentrate on the tropics, of the system that's just been near puerto rico, because a lot of computer models are projecting it to go toward florida and it looks like
