studio with their story. deanna? >> they said the beds moved, dishes fell to the floor. what they felt was so strong, they thought that they were much closer to the epicenter. it wasn't long after that quake that they learned how lucky they are. >> life is very fragile and we have to cherish every minute. >> reporter: that's the reason karen and her opera company will not be cutting short a trip to italy, at least not right now. >> we feel very blessed. our prayers and thoughts are with the victims. >> reporter: they're in central italy with the opera theater of philadelphia. her group consists of children, teenagers, college students and their parents. they felt as if the earthquake was happening right underneath them. >> they came in and they were really shook up.

they did dishes fall down from their cupboards. the whole building they said was shaking. >> reporter: she was able to talk to us through wi-fi at a local cafe. her theater company members took to social media to let people at home know, that despite devastation, that all of them are okay. >> i want to let everybody know that we're fine. and our prayers are going out, and most sincere thoughts are with all of the families for those who have experienced tremendous devastation. and we're so sorry that this happened. >> now, the opera company will remain in the small central town where they're staying. they plan to arrive home on august 29th. despite feeling that quake, and the aftershocks, they say they feel as safe as they can be tonight. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. meanwhile, developing

overseas, at least one student is dead, 14 others wounded after an attack at an american university in afghanistan today. staff and dozens of students were trapped inside the campus as militants attacked it with explosives and gunfire around 6:30 local time. the school's president said elite afghan security forces arrived on the scene soon after. no word on who is responsible. the afghan taliban offshoot of isis has recently claimed a string of attacks aimed at destabilizing the country. back here at home, new video could help police catch a serial predator who rides his bike while groping women in philadelphia. investigators released this surveillance video today showing the man reaching out and touching a woman as he paddled past her. the same man is a suspect in three other similar incidents this month. that one on 8th street, another on 13th street between mckeen and snider avenue, another on

but friday is the day, 94 degrees, feeling like 100. and in some places like in delaware and extreme south jersey, it may be feeling hotter than that. we don't have any kind of significant cloud cover. certainly no rain anywhere nearby. the showers in indiana starting to get into ohio, with just a slight chance that we get any in the lehigh valley tomorrow. we'll be seeing the temperature not drop nearly as much tonight as it did yesterday. and the day before. suburbs, 62. in the morning. lehigh valley 63. both places were in the 50s the last couple of mornings. that's an indication in the increase in the humidity. it's certainly going to be staying dry. we'll let you know how long that heat is going to last and the latest on that tropical system threatening florida in just a few minutes. glenn, thank you so much. new at 4:00, a cumberland county grandmother targeted her home, burglarized.

tens of thousands of dollars in cash stolen. and a lifetime of memories gone. the story from bridgeton. >> everything was taken. down to her underwear. >> reporter: heather said whoever ransacked and stole more than $100,000 worth of items from her mother's bridgeton home also took her life. 72-year-old bonny suffers from alzheimer's. >> she would give you the shirt off her back. and for somebody to violate her in this manner, it just kills me. and it's not about the money. it's just the violation. >> reporter: she said she left nearly all of her mom's belongings at the house after she moved in with her in millville more than a year ago. it's been boarded up since saturday when a neighbor discovered someone had broken in. her loved ones told police $70,000 in cash, 50 grand in gold coins, electronics and even

two hours of deliberations yesterday. a judge ordered the new trial when dna testing revealed that another man assaulted the 77-year-old victim in 1991. since wright has been in prison, he has become a grandfather, and is eager to start this next chapter with his life with his family. >> i thought i was going to miss something. i don't think i slept a wink since i left last night. >> the evidence was so compelling for tony, that there really could have been no other verdict. >> lawyers from the innocence project of new york and attorneys in philadelphia helped wrigtd win his case. he now has plans to spend time with his parents who live in pompano beach, florida. police say a man was shot and killed as they were breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home early this morning. investigators believe the woman's current boyfriend pulled the trigger. they're still hoping to talk to him this afternoon. the reason being, they say the

ex-boyfriend tried twice to force his way into the home overnight. the second time there was a scuffle. the woman's current boyfriend shot and killed the man. he was gone when officers got to the home. now they're trying to get him to come forward and talk. 17 people injured at this concert in camden earlier this month are suing. they were among more than 40 people hurt when a railing collapsed at the bb & t pavilion. lawyers representing the 17 detailed the lawsuit this morning. rapper snoop dogg and kaly fa were performing when the railway gave way. they seek damages from both performers as well as the owners of the pavilion. the first lawsuit is filed against the navy for tainted water in montgomery and bucks county. a family from warrington filed the suit. they live near the former horsham air guard station. they allege their water has been contaminated by fire fighting

foam previously used. the navy has yet to comment on the lawsuit. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with some welcome news for a new jersey driver. they could soon be spending less time in line at the motor vehicle commission offices. governor chris christie announced today a series of changes designed to reduce the wait times. it will eliminate the fees for online transactions, encouraging drivers to use computers instead of going to offices and thus decreasing the line. that change takes effect in october. governor christie is promoting a bill that would change expiration dates for licenses and registration from the last day of the month to driver's birthdays. that would spread out transactions instead of causing a jamup. wine lovers throughout the state can celebrate this afternoon. wineries throughout the country can now ship bottles directly to their doors.

nbc 10 was in glen mills today. the company packaged and shipped wine under a new license issued by the liquor control board. pennsylvania passed the law in june allowing wineries to send directly to anyone in the states. >> we're pleased to see pennsylvania's finally coming out of the dark ages. we were only one of two states with full liquor control by the state. also utah. >> the staff of grace winery is one of 48 wineries that have already been approved for a shipping license. now to a follow-up on a racial controversy involving a radio station that nbc 10 first told you about last night at 11:00. today it was sports as usually with the phanatic. one of the station's producers created an and imitated a black caller who was heard on the air for two years. nbc 10's tim furlong is following the stories for us today, and joins us live outside

the station. what have you learned? >> reporter: nobody from 95.5 returned my many inquiries today. i've been listening to the show, literally across the street from the station here. i wanted to see how he handled the whole controversy. he said yesterday he had no idea the caller was in fact fake. at the start of show on 97.5, this is the only hint of the controversy surrounding his show. just like that, it was on to eagles talk, no mention of station producer creating a regularly appearing fake caller, duane. he didn't know duane was real, but after an article, it came out that it's not abnormal to have fake callers to just try to stir the spot. but the white producer also had a twitter handle and used a picture of an african-american friend for a profile picture. duane talked often of courting

white women and his fear of having illegitimate children. >> you know what i'm saying? i didn't think that kid was my kid. >> reporter: jason martinez talked about the end of the line for duane. they appeared to be apologetic that they suggested the character was racially offensive. nobody here or from the station's parent company called me back. but this is what he told a persistent caller today. >> i said all i needed to say about that yesterday. i hope people will indulge us. all it does is further fan the flames here. we're about letting this thing just die on the vine. >> reporter: back live near 97.5. we got kicked out of that parking lot. i've been calling the station's management all day trying to get a statement about this. and talk to them about the whole idea of fake callers. does it happen that often. are they going to stick with real callers moving forward.

tim furlong, nbc 10 news. there's also fallout in sports talk radio today. our partners at the philadelphia business journal are reporting that competing sports radio 94 wip fired on-air host josh ennis. ennis was fired for his response to the fake caller story. the olympic games may be over, but the scandal involving swimmer ryan lochte is still making headlines. fellow swimmer now james feegen is apologizing for what he calls a serious distraction at the games. lochte initially said he had been robbed at the gas station but later admitted to making that story up. meanwhile, golden girl simone biles returned home from rio today. she arrived back in houston, texas, as you can see to a celebration. biles is the most decorated gymnast in america. she won four gold medals in

team, all-around, vault and floor exercise. she also took bronze in the balance beam. another member of the women's olympic teammate hit texas today as well. that is madison kocian as she arrived in dallas. the five will forever be known as the final five, after bringing home the gold from rio. the olympic countdown is officially on in japan. look at this. tokyo's governor brought the olympic flag into the city today. at the end of each games, the flag is passed on to the mayor of the next olympic city. a tradition that's been carried out since 1988. the tokyo games are set to begin on july 24th, 2020. now to decision 2016. donald trump is continuing his swing through the battleground states with a stop in florida today. trump held a rally in tampa. the republican nominee said he's

feeling good about his chances in the sunshine state. today florida university released a poll that shows trump holding a two-point lead over clinton in florida. trump sounded a familiar battle cry today telling the crowd of supporters that he is the candidate, not hillary clinton, to get americans back to work. >> we will create great numbers of american jobs, beyond anything you've ever witnessed. i will be the greatest jobs president that god ever created. >> prior to today's rally, trump visited with volunteers onboard a voter registration bus just outside the venue in tampa. hillary clinton is taking a brief break from going after her opponent in november. today the democratic nominee is talking about the zika virus. she's proposing a new fund to improve the federal government's response to major public held crises. if elected, clinton said she will create a public health rapid response fund.

caesar's entertainment is hosting a job fair with several hundred positions up for grabs across our area. the company held a job fair in atlantic city today. they're hoping to fill positions of all kinds in five of their properties. we're talking about 500 jobs to be exact. most of them are in atlantic city. we caught up with caesar's talent acquisition manager. he offered up a few tips on how to make a positive impression, and increase your chances of landing a job. >> we're looking for somebody who will definitely be upbeat, whether fresh out of college or someone out in business for a long time. if they've never done the job before, that's fine, we can teach them. >> there is still time to grab an opportunity. another job fair is scheduled at the end of the month. another day, kind of unusually comfortable for august. humidity starting to creep up there, a little bit, 85 degrees

right now in philadelphia. a lot of sunshine across the area. the skies generally not quite as blue as they've been. the humidity will continue to go up. the ocean 76 degrees. but just a very light sea breeze has allowed the temperature to get just above 80 degrees. holgate at 81. avalon 83. 79 in cape may. and 82 inland. the temperature trend in philadelphia, going straight up. it's not going to be 94 over the weekend, but it may still be close to 90. feeling like 100 on friday. the humidity down a little bit over the weekend. so it won't be feeling quite as hot. we have dry conditions across the entire east now. a little bit of moisture. a weak system coming through. indiana and ohio, and the future cast shows this hour by hour. as we go through the day tomorrow, there might be a couple little showers coming through berks county and lehigh

valley, poconos. that's about it. it looks like the rest of the area is dry. looks like a lot of sunshine back at the shore once again. and then on friday, we're looking kind of dry. very hot. these are the high temperatures tomorrow. plus the feels-like temperature, how high that's going to get. so chestnut hill 88, feeling like 90. upper mayfield, 88, feeling like 89. same story in easton. the higher the humidity goes, the bigger the gap of these temperatures. like, for example, cape may, high of only 79, because of the sea breeze, but it will feel like 89 because it's going to be so humid. tropics continue to be active. gaston, way out in the atlantic. and this next one could be developing, but it hasn't. it's got a lot of wind with it, a lot of thunderstorms. but it's all spread out.

disorganized. and so it is not developed yet. the tracks, once again, continue to head toward florida. especially south florida by sunday. and then potentially into the gulf of mexico. but the real question is, how strong is that system going to be by the time it gets there. it may not be all that strong. it has to get organized first. over the weekend, close to 90 degrees in philadelphia. looks like it's going to be dry. a lot of sunshine. at the shore, a little cooler on sunday because of the sea breeze being a little bit stronger. we'll get into next week a little bit later. >> glenn, thank you so much. a little boy who defied medical odds continued his victory lap today. >> little zion harvey woke up early in the big apple and joined the "today" show team this morning. watch him take on the weather with al roker, next. he's just 5 years old with big dreams to one day become a police officer, and he's got a big heart.

today delaware got in on the action, marking the 100th birthday of the national park service in wilmington. the landmark is part of the historical park. president woodrow wilson created the national park service back on august 25th, 1916. the goal was to create a permanent agency to promote and manage the nation's parks. a record-breaking number of students desended on temple university in north philadelphia campus today. >> some parents got stuck with the heavy lifting, as freshmen moved into doors at the north philly college this morning. the class of 2020, can you believe that? includes more than 5,000 freshmen and transfer students. that's a 15% jump over last year. one mother told us the toughest part of the day will be saying good-bye. >> sad. i don't want to start crying now. this is my third one leaving. >> i'm a little nervous. i'm pretty independent.

breaking news we are following in bear, delaware. we're working to get you a live picture. this is a scene at the park where we learned a woman was injured in a zip line accident. it's unclear how far she fell. we're told her injuries are serious. this accident happened just after 2:30 this afternoon at go ape zipline and tree top adventure. you're looking at what appears to be the central location where you probably check in. an nbc 10 crew is headed to the scene on the ground and we'll bring you any new information as soon as we get it. ford is recalling more than 88,000 vehicles, because the engines can stall without warning due to a fuel pump

problem. the recall covers certain ford flex wagons as well as ford taurus and sedans. it also includes certain lincoln nks sedans and nkt suvs from model years 2013 through 2015. out west in washingtocalifo case dismissed a case of starbucks putting too much ice in the drink. the judge also noted starbucks signage lists the size of the cups in ounces, but does not list how much liquid will actually be in the cup. new figures show heart disease is still the leading cause of death in america. but cancer is gaining ground. the numbers show cancer was the top killer in 22 states. that's up from just two states in the year 2000. data also shows that cancer now causes more death among asian and hispanic americans than heart disease. while we're talking about

medicine, and medical news, the white house now weighing in on the public outcry over the skyrocketing cost of epi pens. white house spokesman josh earnest had harsh words for the pharmaceutical companies that distribute them. he said they're doing more damage to their reputations by upping the prize. they rose from $56 to a 461% increase. new data out is prompting questions about whether high school students are really prepared for college. only 38% of graduating seniors who took the a.c.t. last year hit the college prepared benchmark in at least three of the four core subjects tested. test makers said a decline in scores was expected because more people are taking the a.c.t.s. the composite score last year was 20.8.

through the midwest. doesn't look like much. indiana and into ohio. but this one storm here, this just produced a pretty significant tornado in kokomo, indiana. i've seen video of it, and some of the damage you may be hearing more about it in the hours to come. we have the heat and humidity coming back. 85 degrees so far today. 89 tomorrow. feeling like about 90, 91. and then friday, 94. feeling like a hundred. over the weekend, close to 90. but the humidity will be down a little bit. so it won't be feeling like a hundred degrees then. this is what it's going to feel like tomorrow. somerton's 89 degree, feeling like 90. upper dublin township, 87, feeling like 88. you can see the humidity's up a little, but not a tremendous amount. at the shore, it's a different story. longport 79, feeling like 86. that's an indication the humidity is pretty high.

as you can see, no rain tomorrow, except perhaps a chance for berks county and lehigh valley. the tropics, still active now. eastern atlantic. that's going nowhere. but this one, herminez may be developing in the next 24, 48 hours. right now it is not a tropical depression or tropical storm, it's totally disorganized. but there's strong winds in that thing. if it ever got its act together, it could become a pretty significant storm. but it is so disorganized now, that it may stay that way for at least a couple of days. obviously the track is taking it toward the bahamas. but the weaker it is, the more to the south it would tend to track. so on the southern edge of those lines as you saw, would be the most likely thing if that does not intensify. you can obviously see the threat to florida and potentially part of the gulf of mexico. so over the next several days, we have a sea breeze at the
