young man 20 years old. and today i'm a grandfather. >> reporter: a dream compared to the nightmare that tony wright has been living for decades, convicted of raping and murdering a 77-year-old woman in 1991. wright has fought to prove prosecutors and police wrong. dna testing finally showed another man raped the victim, and it made all the difference to this jury who met with wright today and hugged him like he was family. >> this was truly the most emotionally draining, mentally exhausting, and soul-stirring thing that i've ever done in my life. >> reporter: for wright who was released from prison yesterday afternoon, the past 24 hours have been a whirlwind. >> i had probably four or five phones in my possession at one time. i was trying to -- i always say i'm a great multitasker, i don't know how good of a job i did last night. >> reporter: there were also moments when the gravity of the

circumstances was too overwhelming to ignore. >> oh, man, 25 years. 25 years, man. >> reporter: while wright insists he's not angry with prosecutors for retrying his case despite the dna testing a few years ago, some jurors don't feel the same way. >> just to say it was a waste of taxpayers' money, tony was kept in jail for another two years when he should have been free. >> i would be lying if i didn't say i was angry at that point. but i still kept my faith in god. >> reporter: wright has always been a believer this day would come. now that it's here it couldn't be any sweeter. >> a lot of hugs. a lot of kisses. a lot of family. a lot of friends. >> lawyers from the innocence project of new york and attorneys at law in philadelphia helped wright win his case. he now has plans to spend time with his parents. they run a catering business in

pompano beach, florida, that's where they live. developing story that we've been following this afternoon in bear, delaware. sky force 10 was over the state park where a woman was seriously injured in a ziplining accident. it's unclear what happened. this accident happened just after 2:30 this afternoon at go ape zipline and tree top adventure. we have a crew headed to the scene on the ground. as soon as we get some new information, we'll pass it along. also tonight, take a good look at this philadelphia purse snatching captured on surveillance video in early august. the suspect grabs a woman from behind and chokes her until she passes out. then takes her bag. witnesses chased after the man as he fled on a bike. call 911 if you can i.d. him. a story a lot of people are talking about, racism on a local sports radio. some say that was the case on 97.5 in the phanatic. >> welcome back to normalcy.

>> that's host, mike, he said to open his show, just a day after finding out a white station producer created and regularly called in as a fake black caller named duane from sweets boro. pat eegen ran a twitter profile for dwayne. a persistent caller asked him to talk about that story. >> i said all i needed to say about that yesterday. i hope people will indulge. all it does is further fan the flames here. we're about letting this thing just die on the vine. >> station management didn't return our calls today. on social media, some listeners defended the station saying it was all just a joke. others found it racist and the stereotypes offensive. now to our first alert weather. blue skies and sunshine over independence mall. temperatures, they're slowly starting to rise. but at least the low humidity

made it feel really great out there today. all going to change. >> right. meteorologist sheena parveen is here with more on the return of the heat and humidity. >> you know, it's still nice outside right now. you can still enjoy the weather we have today. but especially tomorrow, you'll notice the heat and humidity both going up. especially as we go into friday. if you see the seven-day at the bottom of your screen, you notice the 90s do come back. not right now, 85 in philadelphia. 80 degrees in wilmington. low 80s south jersey. even along the shore we're in the low 80s. really comfortable weather still today. humidity not bad at all. let's look at our neighborhood temperatures in philadelphia. 85 at philly international. graduate hospital, though, 89 degrees. we do have some neighborhoods that are a little bit warmer than others. fox chase 88 degrees. but heat and humidity coming back tomorrow.

you will notice a big change in the weather tomorrow, especially as we go into friday. where we have been over the past couple days is a little bit below normal. 83 monday and tuesday. today so far, we've gotten to 85 degrees. tomorrow we're going to get up there to near 90. the normal high is actually 84. and look at your friday. we're going for a high of 94 degrees. with the extra humidity, that will move in. it's actually going to feel like 100 degrees on friday. the triple-digit heat comes back for the weekend. we'll also have a dry stretch of weather. coming up, i'll show you the weekend forecast and the next rain chance. that may be with some tropical moisture. the tropics are getting more active. we'll talk more about that straight ahead. today the clinton foundation is coming under more pressure to shut down. nbc 10 national correspondent steve handelsman has the story from washington. >> reporter: in tampa, donald trump charged hillary clinton

donald trump owing millions to china, russia and goldman sachs. he urged minorities to vote for him saying democrats have ignored them. >> to the african-american voter, great people, to the hispanic voter, who have been absolutely treated terribly, i say, what do you have to lose. >> reporter: he could lose the election if the outreach fails. i'm steve handelsman, nbc 10 news. new details now on a theft from the wounded warrior project. philadelphia police have now found some of their stolen custom-made bikes. thieves took off with $40,000 worth of bikes from a u-haul parked at a motel two weeks ago. the bikes are used in fund-raising rides like these, you see here on your screen. last night philly police got a tip and found the bikes at a home on sterling street in the northeast. one person is in custody.

48-year-old roy bowman charged with theft and receiving stolen property. crisp fried chicken, a tradition for four decades. soon families will call the spot where it once stood home. nbc 10 were there for the ground breaking of the townhomes at walz way. the three and four-bedroom houses here will eventually be sold for between 140 and $160,000. a new law in philadelphia aims to make life a little bit easier for children with special needs. nbc 10 was at the rec center in germantown today where mayor kenny signed the new bill. take a look. new city-run parks and recreation centers for those undergoing renovation must be inclusive and family-friendly, that's all part of this new law. worcester completed a face lift that included a swing design for the disabled and adult exercise

equipment. it is a celebration that has been 100 years in the making. and today delaware got in on the action. the first state marked the 100th birthday of the national park service in wilmington. it's part of the first state national historical park. president woodrow wilson created the national park service on august 25th, 1916. the goal was to create a permanent agency to protect and manage the nation's parks. it hit without warning, in the middle of the night. tonight entire towns have been decimated by an earthquake in central italy. we'll get an update on the damage, the search for survivors, and local students who were just miles from the devastation. beware of this bike rider. police say he's targeting women on the sidewalks of center city. what you should look out for, that's coming up at 5:00. plus, many will say it's about time.

a student dead, 14 others wounded after an attack at an american university in kabul, afghanistan. staffs and dozens of students were trapped inside the campus

as militants attacked it with explosion i was and gunfire. the school's president said elite afghan forces security forces arrived on the scene soon after. no word on who's officially responsible. the afghan taliban offshoot of isis has recently claimed a string of attacks in destabilizing the country. at least 120 people are dead, hundreds more are injured after that powerful earthquake devastated several towns in central italy. >> what you're looking at right now is video taken by a drone. many residents are trapped under those piles of rubble. nbc's lucy cavanaugh reports from the hard-hit town. >> reporter: this was one of the epicenters of the devastating earthquakes that struck at about 3:35 in the morning local time. so powerful was this quake, that i felt it 100 miles away in rome. you can see behind me, scenes of devastation. this ancient town that has

withstood the time of centuries, now virtually a no-go zone. buildings collapsed, rescue workers are digging through the rubble trying to get to any people that may have been trapped underneath. one local police official told nbc news that he estimates at least 50 people may have been killed here "loan. those numbers likely to rise. we have seen tragic, awful pictures in front of us, people's bodies pulled from the ground, taken on stretchers. there were ambulances going in and out. local officials have been begging for rescue equipment, blood donations, and basic food, medicine, diapers, water, equipment for the residents who have survived the devastating earthquake in order for them to be able to continue with their lives. there are a lot of people who have lost their homes. they'll need temporary shelter. this is one of the worst earthquakes in recent time in

history. the last one was in 2009, where at least 300 people were killed. that town now a ghost town. whether this becomes a ghost town is a question, but certainly for the people who have been living here, their lives now shattered, turned upside down by this earthquake in there. back to you. students in philadelphia, they felt the earth moving. students from philadelphia, i should say. the international opera theater company performing about an hour from where the quake was centered. nbc 10 spoke with the company director. she says students woke up to the feeling of the quake strike. it wasn't long before they saw the devastation not far away. >> they came in and they were really shook up. two of the actors from the university of philadelphia had dishes fall down from their cupboards. their beds -- the whole building they said was shaking.

>> the theater company is set to return next week. they said they feel as safe as they can be right now. vice president joe biden arrived in turkey today asking for patience from turkish authorities. officials in turkey told biden that they want president obama to extradite muslim cleric gullen. but the vice president made it clear that the president has no power to extradite the pennsylvania-based religious leader. gullen, who lives in sailorsburg, in the pocono mountains, is accused of masterminding the coup in turkey. he denied knowing about the plot. biden told turkish authorities the extradition process will take time, as it moves through the american court system. >> well, take a look at the boardwalk on this beautiful day. this is in atlantic city. great day to be at the beach. low humidity. comfortable temperatures.

beautiful skies. plenty of sunshine. we're going to have a really nice weekend, too. if you're heading to the jersey shore or delaware beaches this weekend, temperatures will be a little hotter over the next few days and then they'll drop back a bit over your weekend. right now we're at 85 degrees philadelphia. 84 for wilmington. south jersey coming in in the low 80s right now. if you're in new jersey right now, 84 degrees turnersville. also 85 piles grove. piney hollow coming in at 84 degrees. medford 87. a little bit warmer than yesterday. 88 in robbinsville. we're nice and dry. we have no rain for tonight. but parts of the area tomorrow, and a very small part of the area could see some of this rain that's moving into parts of ohio right now. some could move in tomorrow, definitely not everybody. i'll show you that in just a minute. but we'll be heating up tomorrow more than today. especially as we go into friday. near 90 tomorrow.

you'll notice the humidity increasing, especially friday. here's a look at your highs for your thursday. 89 degrees. shanksville 87. if you're in robbinsville, 89 degrees. avalon coming in 82. wilmington tomorrow sunny, temperatures near 88 degrees. hotter tomorrow. more heat friday. but we still have a dry stretch of weather through the weekend. so at least that's good news. we're also talking about the tropics, and we are watching one system in particular that could be impacting the united states next week. we'll be keeping a very close eye on that. more details in just a minute. here's the future weather i was mentioning. 11:00 tomorrow, we're still dry and sunny. the humidity at a comfortable level. but the temperatures will be rising. again, to near 90 degrees. there's a little bit of that rain i was mentioning, too, that's currently moving into ohio. if it holds together, parts of the lehigh valley, berks county could see a couple afternoon showers. now, it doesn't appear to be moving through the entire area. i think most of us tomorrow will

in fact stay dry. we go into your friday, setting us up nice and dry all the way through the weekend. we have quite a bit of a dry stretch here. philadelphia and the jersey shore, the forecast as we go through your thursday. if you're in philadelphia near 90 tomorrow. near 80 along the shore. friday, mid-90s. feeling closer to 100. if you're at the shore it's going to be hot friday, right around 90 degrees. then we go through the weekend, shore temperatures will drop off to the mid to low 80s. nice and dry. if you're staying in the philadelphia area, we'll be around 90 degrees. and next week we're going to have a pretty hot start. tropics, though, getting a little more active for this time of the year. almost at the peak of hurricane season. we have two systems. the one farthest away, we don't have to worry about that one. the one we're watching very closely is right near puerto rico. it's not very organized, but this system does have the potential to travel across the bahamas. maybe strengthen, and then get closer to the united states. at that point some of the moisture from this could make it our way.

so we could have some rain chances as with ego into part of next week. if you look at the seven-day forecast right at the bottom of your screen, by the middle of next week we could be seeing some rain chances from this system. of course, we're still many, many days away. lots of time for things to change. of course, we'll be tracking it coming up at 5:30. meteorologist krystal klei has more of what the computer models are thinking about it. >> thanks for that, sheena. wine lovers across the country will now be able to enjoy merlots and chardonnays made in pennsylvania. a little bit earlier today grace winery in glen mills sent out its first shipment. grace winery is one of the first local wineries in pennsylvania awarded a license to ship their products nationwide. the state liquor control board has issued 39 licenses so far. there are about 200 more applications waiting. >> i've been waiting for this act to pass. it allows us to really compete with some of the larger national

the scope of the flooding was devastating. as much as two feet of water fell in neighborhoods across louisiana. as many as 100,000 homes were damaged. now those victims must begin the enormous task of cleaning up what's left of their homes and what's left of their communities. >> we sent nbc10.com's sarah smith to baton rouge to follow the state's recovery. sarah spent part of the day at the headquarters for the american red cross response. we should mention, sarah has worked with the red cross at scenes just like this one. sarah, tell us what you've found so far in baton rouge. >> reporter: yeah, i mean, i can tell you, i've been on the ground here just today, and this is the red cross headquarters in baton rouge. folks are coming and going, getting their assignments. the red cross tells me that more than 2,400 folks spent the night

in a shelter just last night alone. we also have a lot of local volunteers from our area who are down here. and i've been able to run into a bunch of them, too. >> we understand there are a number of people out there from our area helping those in response. you spoke to mary. let's take a listen to what she said. >> i do this because i know how blessed i am to have my home and my food and my family. and i know how desperate these people are to have that sense of normalcy in their life again. and i think it's important that the american people recognize that we have to help one another when we're all in times of stress. >> is this your first time? >> that is a great message right there. sarah, what kinds of things are volunteers like mary doing to help? >> reporter: yeah, mary has a special job. she came down here to work in a shelter. but they asked her to inspect the big trucks that are going

separate tropical threats right now. we've been talking about them and we'll continue to track them. what you're looking at here is near puerto rico, which could become hermine. that is something we'll be watching very closely. we also have right now tropical storm gaston. this system at this point looking to stay out in the atlantic. so the track here, these are potential movements of gaston. at this point not an issue for us. but hermine could become an issue for the united states. now, florida has seen a hurricane drought, meaning they have not seen a hurricane make landfall in more than ten years. this could become a big issue. now, what we have to watch for, "a," it could become more organized, "b," the track of it. if it drops further south, we could see the red lines to the further south points. some tracks have it directly over areas like miami. they are collecting data on this.

this is a hurricane hunter, a plane sent into the storm area, and gathers data on it. so what you see here, this yellow is the path of the hurricane hunter. picking up those peak wind speeds. so far 63 miles per hour. you can see the rain, thunderstorms that are already associated with this unorganized storm. but those winds not yet hurricane force, 74 miles per hour. sheena is going to continue talking about what could become hermine coming up in just a bit. >> thanks for that, crystal. now to new video that could help police catch a serial predator who uses a bike as a getaway after groping women in philadelphia. investigators released video today showing the man reaching out and touching a woman as he peddled past her. this happened on august 13th on south 8th street. the same man is a suspect in three other similar incidents this month. that one we just mentioned on 8th street, that's one. another on 13th between mckeen and snider avenue. another on lum bard street

between 9th and 10th. and a fourth on 15th near moore. the man rides up behind a woman on his bike and gropes her. here's another look at that video. if you know this man, call philadelphia police. turning our sights down the shore now. caesar's entertainment putting up the help wanted sign. the company held a job fair at the jersey shore today. christian from our spanish language station telemundo 62 has more. >> i enjoy cooking. i've got 30 years of experience in the kitchen. might as well stay with it. >> reporter: paul smith is determined to walk out of this atlantic city casino ball room with a new job. the taj mahal closing in october will leave him unemployed. >> it's been nonstop standing on the picket line, fighting for our rights. >> reporter: smith says he's not worried. and feels confident among the large group of folks at this job fair, where 500 positions from gaming to non-gaming were up for

when i saw donald trump attack another gold star mother, i felt such a sense of outrage. "she was standing there, she had nothing to say..." if donald trump cannot respect a gold star family, then why would anyone in america think he would respect them. votevets is responsible for the content of this advertising. golden girl simone biles is back home. people lining the streets today in her hometown of spring, texas. listen. a huge crowd was on hand to greet biles when she arrived at the airport in houston today. and for good reason. simone biles is the most decorated gymnast in america. she won four gold medals in team, all-around, vault, and floor exercise. she also took bronze in the balance beam.

"america's got talent" returns tonight with olympic superstar michael phelps as a co-host. phelps, the most decorated olympian of all-time has 28 medals including five new gold beauties from the rio games. tonight america's got talent at 8:00. >> believe it or not, the olympic countdown is officially on in japan. tokyo's governor brought the olympic flag into the city today. at the end of each games, the flag is passed on to the mayor of the next olympic city. it's been tradition since 1988. the tokyo games are set to begin on july 24th, 2020. that means we're just 1,430 days away. but who's counting, right? we have more heat in the forecast as we end out the week. plus more humidity. it's going to feel around 100

face painting. they did it at west philadelphia charter elementary school. celebrating the pending new school year. it also gave parents a chance to pick up free school supplies and chat with teachers and staff. school opens september 1st. a local doctor tells us returning to the classroom should include more than just getting school supplies and some new clothes. >> just a couple of things that parents and guardians should keep in mind. one of them is to make sure your kids don't walk to and from school alone. also, look for changes in how they act. it could really help pinpoint learning problems, bullying. backpacks when full should weigh no more than 20% of your child's body weight. and use both straps of the backpack, not just one, which might be cool to walk around with one strap. >> it was full when you were in school. >> maybe. perhaps the most important step of all, in all seriousness, sleep. getting that bedtime and wake up routine started right now.

>> if a child's 3 to 5, they need about 12 hours of sleep a night. 6 to 13, they need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night. our teenagers, 14 and above, they really need about 9 to 10 hours of sleep a night. >> the doctor says when it comes to sports and other after-school activities, make sure kids aren't overscheduled. don't forget college kids have to head back to school, too. today in university city, some of the 2,500 students who will make up penn's class of 2020 moved in. the freshmen ivy leaguers al my alma mater got help from student and staff volunteers. i was a nervous wreck the first day. temple freshmen also moved in today. the university tells us that the incoming class is its largest ever. more than 5,000 freshmen and transfer students, one of those new students tells us she cannot wait to get started. but she thinks the beginning will be a little tough.

very clear skies. we still have the low humidity. so not many clouds around because of that. if you are in the pennsylvania suburbs, mid-80s. south jersey neighborhoods low 80s. marshalton coming in 84 degrees. if you're in harmony hills, 84. odessa coming in at 85 degrees. but a little bit cooler if we get closer to the delaware beaches. rehoboth beach 77. dewey beach coming in at 76. still really nice out right now. going to be hotter by the end of the week. this is the radar currently. we're nice and dry. but as we go into tomorrow, there's a chance that some of the rain you see moving into ohio, some of it could try to move into the lehigh valley tomorrow afternoon. definitely would not be for everybody. this is future weather. tonight we stay dry going into the start of your thursday. another nice day. and then you'll notice maybe if you're in the lehigh valley or berks county, more clouds by the afternoon. chance of a shower there.

but those are our only neighborhoods that have that chance of rain. the dry stretch will go all the way back into the weekend. and to start next week. the humidity and heat coming back like we've been talking about. so take a look at what our temperatures are going to do. today we hit 86 degrees in philadelphia. two days in a row of 83. tomorrow closer to 90. humidity goes up a little bit. by friday it will go up a little more. mid-90s for the high temperature but the humidity making it feel once again around 100 degrees. so we're going to be ending the week on a very hot note. neighborhood highs tomorrow, though, fairmont 89 degrees, chestnut hill 87. lang horn, 87. mostly dry. lehigh valley, allentown 85 degrees. chance of an afternoon shower. robbinsville dry, 89. longport tomorrow, upper 70s. if you're in delaware, areas like wilmington, coming in near 90 degrees. now we're talking about the tropics. two systems, the one farthest

away, gaston, we don't have to worry about that one, it will stay out in the atlantic. the one we're watching is around puerto rico. it would be our next named storm, hermine, right around puerto rico. not very organized. but take a look at what the computer models do. this is showing you many, many different computer models, what they think is going to happen with this storm. and as we go into saturday, a lot of them are agreeing the storm track will continue toward the bahamas. if it holds together toward the bahamas, it could be strengthening over the bahamas. a lot of the models as we go into next week put it right over florida. so there's a little bit more of a spread as we go farther out in time, which is typical once this storm actually gets a better rotation, the models will have a better handle on it. if it goes into the gulf of mexico, not good news. then it would strengthen even more. if it goes over florida, of course, we'll certainly be tracking it even closer to see if we'll get any of that moisture as we go into next

hearing the name dmv conjures up bad memories. nightmarishly long lines, hours of wasted time. and the long lines are getting worse. now governor christie says he's got a plan to cut the wait times down. it seems like no one leaves the dmv in a good mood. >> it was ridiculous. over two hours. >> it was ridiculously frustrating. >> i hated it. >> reporter: the long lines to renew licenses and registration were already hours long. but budget and staffing cuts last year turned this inconvenience into a nightmare. juan waited 45 minutes in line and was told simply, try again tomorrow. you actually had to take a day off work? >> two days off. >> reporter: our team exposed huge problems this spring. chris christie and officials say they're well aware of the complaints. >> it's unacceptable to me to see customers waiting in hours-long lines at the offices. >> reporter: the governor is proposing several changes to cut the lines down.

breaking news at 6:00. a ziplining accident at a delaware park has left a woman dead. the 58-year-old woman fell from the zipline at lund pond state park in bear. it's not clear how far she fell. nbc 10's drew smith is minutes away from that scene. we'll bring you updates as soon as we can get them. first, devastation from a deadly earthquake in italy. take a look at this drone video capturing an entire town, reduced to rubble. rescue crews have been using bulldozers and their bare hands to look for any survivors. the tremors could be felt as far away from rome, two hours from ground zer o. the death toll has been rising all day. right now it stands at 159. but that number is only expected to climb. this was a magnitude 6.2 quake. several large aftershocks followed. the quake struck at 3:36 a.m.
