italy time, meaning most people were asleep. we are combing the web for details of this. we're also working with our affiliates overseas. and nbc 10's deanna durante spoke with locals who felt the shock waves who woke up this morning. deanna? >> keith, students from our area woke up to broken dishes and their beds moving across the floor, saying what they felt was so strong, they thought they were in the center of the quake zone. today they spent a big part of the day alerting people here at home that they are some of the lucky ones. >> i called family and they said the entire town was outside. fortunately no one was hurt. i was on the phone with my friend there. another aftershock happened. >> reporter: car mine was on social media last night when he first saw what was happening in central italy. he has family near the quake zone and a family home not far from there. but the house was the least of

his worries. >> the epicenter isn't a real populated area. >> reporter: the quake hit at night. people were sleeping, or waking to falling debris. and for some, it was not enough of a chance to get to a safe area. >> very terrifying. >> reporter: 40 people from the philadelphia area, traveling with the international opera theater of philadelphia. the group consists of young kids from our area. teens, college students and parents, as well as members from across the world. many woke to shaking, thinking the quake was happening just beneath them. >> it really, really lets you know that life is very fragile and you have to cherish every moment. >> now, the national italian-american foundation tells me they're working on relief efforts here locally, from restaurants donating aid to the quake zone. elsewhere, militants stormed

and attacked the university in afghanistan today. some students jumped from windows to escape the gunfire. officials say at least one person was killed. 18 others wounded. some staff and students were trapped in the compound hours after the attack began. so far, no one has claimed responsibility. "nbc nightly news" with lester holt will have the very latest on these two developing stories, coming up at 6:30. right now at 6:00, though, a south jersey grandmother missing memories, valuables and $70,000 in cash because of burglars who ransacked her house. it happened in bridgeton, cumberland county. ted greenberg spoke with the victim's family who wants justice for these cruel crimes. >> it's just a violation. how awful can you be. >> reporter: heather said burglars trashed her mother's house in bridgeton from attic to basement, and even stole her underwear. along with more than $100,000

worth of items. >> they took everything. they took her life. >> reporter: 72-year-old bonnie suffers from alzheimer's. her daughter said she left almost all of her belongings at the magnolia avenue house after she moved in with her in millville more than a year ago. it's been boarded up since saturday when a neighbor discovered someone had broken in. >> i don't fathom it. >> reporter: $70,000 in cash, 50 grand in gold coins, electronics, and even depression-era silverware and plates were among the items taken. many others were destroyed. >> i didn't remove the stuff because i didn't want to close that chapter. for someone else to close the chapter for me, it just kills me. >> reporter: investigators have few leads. it's believed the house was entered numerous times over the past few months. >> just be careful of what you do when with your items. if you have money in your house, i would suggest putting it in a bank.

>> reporter: police tell me they're checking with the hospital across the street to see if the surveillance cameras caught anything on video. they say they're also touching base with area pawnshops. >> it's not the value of the money, it's the value of the memories. i just want justice. that's all. i just want justice for my mother. >> reporter: ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. a mistake you may have heard about, it forced the ceo of a lehigh valley charter school to step down. that mailer promotes arts academy charter school mentioned a 2015 drug arrest at nearby liberty high school. she said she had nothing to do with the mailer but is resigning in the wake of the controversy. the school said the mailer wasn't authorized and plans litigation once it finds out who was behind it. switching gears now. take a look at these shots. a great day to get outside and see the sites. another beautiful day. temperatures are soon to go up.

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now. glenn, the heat and humidity starting to make that comeback yet again. >> you may have been able to feel a little bit of it during the day today. the sky not as blue as what we've seen over the last couple of days. and the temperature starting to go up. after 83 the last couple of days, 86 the high today. 89 to 90 tomorrow. and then 90 for friday. feeling like 100 degrees. we don't have any significant cloud cover headed our way, at least immediately. but some showers in ohio could affect parts of the lehigh valley tomorrow. in the meantime, we've got mostly clear conditions tonight. it will not be as cool as it was the last two nights. p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley down in the 50s, will stay in the 60s overnight tonight. and then the heat and humidity build. we'll see if it lasts through the weekend with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> looking forward to that, glenn, thanks. a former new jersey police officer says he was fired for

being outspoken about working longer shifts. now he's suing. douglas foster named the chief of the township police and several other officers in the suit. foster says the men retaliated against him when he opposed changing shifts from 8 to 12 hours. the township tells us they can't comment on ongoing litigation. to justice finally served, that's how jurors described the case of a 44-year-old philadelphia man who served 25 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. it was an emotional meeting earlier today. as wright hugged and thanked the jury who set him free. they acquitted him less than two hours of deliberating yesterday. wright was convicted of raping and murdering a 77-year-old woman inside her nicetown home in 1991. he got a new trial after dna testing a few years ago revealed another man raped the victim. wright describes the past 24 hours with his family as a

celebrity judges. beauty pageant happens in atlantic city this september. down the shore, caesar's entertainment is hiring. several hundred jobs up for grabs all across our area. the company held a job fair in atlantic city today. they're hoping to fill 500 gaming and non-gaming positions at five of their properties. most of them in atlantic city. interested applicants who missed out today, they're holding another job fair at the end of the month. a soon-to-be kindergartener shells out his allowance to feed police. he told his mom he wants the cops to be healthy. so they continue to keep us safe. evers' parents matched his money to buy subway sandwiches for the officers. he got keys to the station, his own badge. and a special ride home.

at the start of his show, this is mike's only nod to the controversy. >> welcome back to normalcy. >> reporter: he didn't talk more about dwayne. pat created the character and a twitter profile that was a jum shl of african-american stereotypes. dwayne was known for his love of white women and illegitimate children. >> i ain't going to lie to you, man. you know what i'm saying? i didn't think that kid was my kid. >> reporter: on social media u pat and producer jason went back and forth with viewers who thought the character was funny and those who found it offensive. he insisted he always thought his caller was real, but a staffer said producers making fake calls, that happens pretty regularly. >> once in a while you've got to punch up somebody to rile up your host.

indiana, ohio. several tornadoes in indiana, one in the city of kokomo this afternoon, causing a lot of damage. i'm hearing some about that. as we go through the next 24 hours, chance of a couple of showers from berks county, lehigh valley, and up toward the poconos. but that moves out. and then we're left with pretty much dry weather during the day on friday as we continue to heat up. this is the predicted high temperature, predicted feels-like temperature for tomorrow. not much of a difference in most places. but we do see the difference at the shore. 79 in longport. feeling like 86 degrees. that's the kind of thing that's going to really start spreading across the entire area friday. gaston, all the way out in the atlantic, hermine has not formed yet. but it might. it is very disorganized. as you can see around san juan. it's a huge area, but there's no

circulation around it. hurricane hunter plane has been sent out, going all through the system. it's found pretty strong winds. but you've got to have a low pressure center for it to be called a tropical depression, a tropical storm. over the next few days, the forecast track is generally toward the bahamas, and then to florida. but if it stays real weak, these things have a tendency to track farther to the south, and a lot of the computer models say. we'll see if that indeed happens as we check in the next couple of days. the weekend, looking pretty hot. not as humid as friday. the shore will have most of the sea breeze on sunday. but i'm not expecting any rain in any part of the area. that's a pretty nice forecast for your weekend. i agree, hurricane. the eagles have another injury on the offensive line. sam bradford's teammates
