earl earl starts right now. indiana mike pence is back in his home after a surprise tornado outbreak hit parts of indiana. there are reports of more than 30 tornadoes although a official number has yet to be determined. there's no reports of any deaths or serious injuries. >> it is truly remarkable that there are such a few number of injuries or worse, in the wake of this storm, given the fact that it literally struck howard county, virtually at shift change in the afternoon in a great manufacturing town. and about the time kids were getting out of school. just about the worst possible time. >> dozen es of homes and businesses have been destroyed. the national weather service has given a preliminary ef-3 rating to a twister that hit kokomo which was a city that was

getting over a severe tornado that hit two years ago. one starbucks was blown to the ground. one witness tells our affiliate people were trapped but luckily able to make it out. nbc's bill karins joins us with more right now. bill, any area of danger? >> it doesn't appear to be the same element that we had yesterday afternoon. we're still watching a few strong tomorrows, no longer tornadic or severe. one does include portions of indiana and highway. combined with the slight rick area around joplin or watch that. 7 million people at risk but the tornado threat is much less today, betty. rescuers in central italy are racing against time to rescue people buried under rubble. the powerful 6.2 quake has killed 250 people. the worst hit is amatrice. this is what the town looked

like before. and then now after. it complicated rescue efforts. and added to the distress. a miraculous moment. 7-year-old julia was trapped for 17 hours before being found. the italian army is using its equipment and sniffer dogs to search for others like her. nbc's lucy kavanov is live in amatrice. she joins us live. what's the situation there? >> reporter: betty, a somber morning, as rescue workers pull more bodies from the rubble here amatrice. you can see behind me the devastation this earthquake took out. this is a home that's now basically been reduced to a mountain of sand and rock. those are the conditions that

rescuers have to deal with. one fire fighter still a dangerous operation for them, because these buildings are not structurally sound. they could still move around. the ground still moves around with aftershocks, more than 400 them since the earthquake hit at 3:36 wednesday local time. for the people here in amatrice, it focuses on three basic things. who's alive, who's dead and who is missing. this town is supposed to be full of tourists and the famous pasta festival that was supposed to take place this weekend. instead, people are trying to get board to loved ones, whether dead or alive. the accommodations, basically, thousands of people have been rendered homeless overnight. they have set up shelters but what they're doing in the long run is a big question. and other questions, betty, for the italian government, should more have been done. this is an area that is a known

fault line for earthquakes. one of the reasons the earthquake was so powerful, it is full of stone ancient buildings that have been not been reinforced. a lot of people are asking questions about whether more should have been done. but the focus right now, betty, search and rescue, getting those trapped in the rubble. betty. >> thank you, lucy. this morning, security forces remain on alert at the american university of afghanistan in kabul after an attack killed 12 and injured at least 40. gunmen stormed the campus at 7:30 p.m. local time, detonating a car bomb, firing weapons and launching grenades. special forces killed two talkers. and while no group claimed responsibility, kabul is surrounded by the taliban that has long fought against education particularly among women. the u.s. was quick to respond. >> we condemn this attack, in the strongest possible terms. an attack on the university is
