bill? >> lauren, it is a steamy one. the temperatures are soaring this morning. we're close to 90 degrees already, and look at the skies. kind of hazy outside, but we're getti ting enough sunshine to p temperatures up into the 90s this afternoon. this is going to be the hottest day of the week. 88 degrees already in philadelphia. near 90 in wilmington, at 589. and look at the 80s for new jersey. even at the shore, we're seeing a warm-up, atlantic city reporting 89 degrees. indeed, warmer than yesterday at this time. up by 6 for philadelphia and allentown. wilmington is 8 degrees warmer along with trenton. and you factor in the humidity, and it already feels like 104 degrees in dover, where the humidity is elevated. 93 is the feels-like temperature in philadelphia. and 97 degrees in vineland. and the temperatures are still climbing. afternoon numbers into the middle 90s. that's without the humidity. factor in the humidity, 99 degrees is what our feels-like in center city. sunshine and 90s for the suburbs and the lehigh valley.

no sign of the showers that we started with first thing this morning. no sign of those cooler temperatures, either. bordentown, 93, will feel like 97 degrees this afternoon, even at the shore, topping out near 90 degrees, and it was the evaluated humidity, it will feel like close to 100 degrees in stone harbor and right up to that mark more cape may. we've got sunshine in delaware, too. hazy sunshine. 93 in wilmington, will feel like 97 degrees this afternoon. there are some changes, though, ahead for the weekend. i think you'll like them. got a look at the weekend forecast when i come back in just a few minutes. lauren? >> thanks, bill. right now officials are keeping watch on a philadelphia neighborhood after a chemical leak at a warehouse. g street is still closed between erie and venango in kensington because of a chemical that began leaking from its tank yesterday. some businesses were evacuated. now, this chemical can explode if it reaches high temperatures, but we're told that is not a threat at this point. crews are cleaning up the problem. new from overnight, repair crews are fixing a water main

break in west philadelphia on haverford avenue near 41st street. that's where the pipe broke around 12:30 this morning. we're told the break didn't cause any significant damage. let's get a check on your roads now with jessica boyington. she's keeping an eye on that for us. jessica, sounds like people will be pumping that air-conditioning in their cars today. >> definitely! and maybe if you're heading down the shore, you can roll them down for a little bit. and you're actually going pretty quickly, so maybe you don't know the air-conditioning at that point. winds blowing through the car. everything's moving along. there is construction, a lane blocked in both directions until noon today. so a little bit of a delay, because of that. but other than that, this is headed southbound right here. that's what's headed towards the shore. you'll be good doing that, if you want to roll your windows down nice and quickly. mansfield township, there is a debris field on the new jersey turnpike headed southbound around exit 6, around the p.a. turnpike. just watch for some small lane restrictions there. also in new jersey, in hadden township, a traffic signal down

on route 168 headed southbound around route 130. but our p.a. majors look pretty much the same as they usually do. here's the schuylkill expressway around montgomery drive, no huge problems or delays. that's what they normally look like. just a little bit slow. >> thanks, jessica. septa is adding express bus service to some regional rail lines next month, a move that could help ease congestion as septa works to get all its trains back on the tracks. septa took more than 100 cars out of service just before the fourth of july. originally, it said it wanted those cars to be back in service by labor day, but now it says the cars should be back by early november. the buses that will start running the day after labor day. that's when the trains could really get more packed with school back in session. in montgomery county, a septa employee is in jail, accused of stealing more than a half million dollars worth of parts. prosecutors say kyle allen of langhorne stole more than 200 batteries, catalytic converts,

spools of wire and other electrical components. officials say he hit septa stations across three counties. he allegedly sold the parts to scrap yards. happening today, vice president joe biden will be in wilmington, talking about the future of rail transit on the east coast. biden's expected to announce a new $2.5 billion deal between amtrak and a firm that builds high-speed trains. the vice president will speak this afternoon at the amtrak station that bears his name. he was a longtime amtrak customer between women tonk and washington, d.c. philadelphia police are looking for this man in a robber in center city. police say the suspect asked a man walking at 22nd and market streets wednesday night for a dollar. when the man refused, he threatened to kill the victim and started reaching into a backpack while demanding the victim's wallet. the victim gave him his wallet. philadelphia police also need your help identifying a bank robber. he hit the republic bank on

frankford avenue in homeford yesterday. he gave the teller a note demanding money and ran off with the cash. now to the nbc 10 south jersey bureau. an intense manhunt is underway for the person who shot an 8-year-old girl in the head. police have increased patrols in camden while doctors at cooper university hospital are working to keep gabrielle hill carter alive. meantime, as you just saw, balloons were tied to her front porch outside her home. that's where she was shot wednesday night. police say at least four men were shooting at each other, and hill carter got caught up in the middle of it. a reward has been increased to $6,000 for anyone who has information leading to an arrest. the pennsylvania state senate will reconvene this sunday for a vote to possibly name the state's new attorney general. governor tom wolf has nominated bruce beemer to take over the

see. kathleen kane was convicted of lying to the grand jury. yesterday, the phils traded carlos ruiz to the dodgers. he's the third member of the 2008 world series chance to be dealt to the dodgers, following jimmy rawlins and chief utley, although rawlins is no longer with l.a. in return for ruiz and some cash, the fiphillies got a.j. ellis and received former haverford college pitcher, tommy bergjanes and a player to be named later. the world series title will be decided this week in philadelphia. officials are hoping to shatter attendance records. that's not all that's being shattered. a wild pitch yesterday smashed the lens of the network tv camera behind home plate. play was stopped, the grounds krewe cleaned up the debris, but as you can see, the camera itself kept working.

dramatic new video shows a georgia police officer saving the life of a passenger, trapped in a burning car. the suv crashed into a tree earlier this month. now, this is video from officer dan whitney's body camera. the passenger couldn't get out because the accident bent the door frame. whitney bent back the frame after trying to get the fire out with a small extinguisher. an explosion under the hood knocked off his hat and his camera. the passenger is okay. though, sadly, the driver did not survive.

a man is in custody in omaha, nebraska, after police say he stole a truck and rammed it into a parked plane. it happened last night at etly airfield. police say a man jumped a security fence, stripped down to his underwear, and then stole a truck and rammed it into a plane. there were people boarding that plane, but no one was seriously hurt. now to decision 2016. both hillary clinton and donald trump are now accusing each other of racism. andrea mitchell reports on the new war of words between the candidates. >> donald trump ramping up his war of words with hillary clinton on cnn late thursday. again calling her a bigot. >> she is a bigot. >> in what way? >> because when you look at what's happening to the inner cities. you look at what's happening to african-americans and hispanics in this country, where she talks all the time. >> reporter: clinton's running mate, tim kaine, addressing the b-word in a taped interview with stephen colbert that airs tonight. >> he called your friend, hillary clinton, a bigot. >> when hillary clinton got out

reporting. a suicide bomber killed at least 11 police officers in turkey today. the prime minister says the kurdish militant rammed a truck packed with explosives into a checkpoint near a police station in southern turkey. 78 others are hurt. two days ago, turkey launched attacks against isis and kurdish militia fighters in syria. no one's claimed responsibility for that bombing, yet. in italy, a first look at the rescue efforts after wednesday's deadly earthquake. italian police released this amateur video today, of rescuers walking through the streets of amatrice. and more trouble for the same town today. aftershocks from the quake are damaging the two crucial roads into the town. they're shut down and making access difficult. generations of history are at risk for many families in italy because of the quake. this rustic two-story villa has been home to the same family for five centuries. now it's covered in cracks. firefighters are trying to go inside to recover treasures, but aftershocks are making things dangerous.

with the temperatures feeling like they're close to 100 degrees in philadelphia this afternoon. 99 degrees is what it will feel like at 4:00 this afternoon, while the temperatures are in the low to mid-90s. the cooldown this evening, that's when dry air starts to move into the air. so that's going to make for a pleasant change this weekend. it's going to be a sunny weekend and a warm one, too, with lowering humidity saturday and sunday, a lot nicer than what we're dealing with today. saturday, 90 degrees in philadelphia. near 90 degrees on sunday. if you're looking for some cooler temperatures, the shore is the place to be. and if you're looking for rainfall, it's really not in store for us. we had a few showers this morning. we've dried out nicely and those showers that are way to the west are going to be staying out of our picture over the next several days. but the end of the five-day forecast, you can see tuesday, a chance of some storms in philadelphia. not likely. at the shore, it should stay dry there. and before we get there, the temperatures are right back into the 90s on monday afternoon. the full ten-day forecast coming

ten-day.pennsylvania ties the f to health problems. a new john hopkins study looked

at the medical records of almost 8,000 people in 40 pennsylvania counties. people who lived closest to natural gas wells are twice as likely to suffer from migraines, fatigue, and sinus problems than those located furthest from the fracking industry. researchers found people with two or more of these health conditions were almost twice as likely to live closer to more or larger gas wells. fracking proponents deny that the wells cause health problems. more teenage boys are getting the hpv vaccine. the center for disease control reports almost 50% of the boys got the vaccine last year. that's up 8%. the vaccine can prevent more than 90% of related cancers. these new numbers suggest more parents and doctors are getting the message that it's as important for boys to be vaccinated for the human papilloma virus as it is for girls. some conflicting information when it comes to vaping and teenagers. health officials warn that electronic cigarettes are

poisoning kids with nicotine, but new research suggests that most teens the just use sweet and fruity flavors, like strawberry and bubblegum. university of michigan researchers vad almost 15,000 students about their use of ecigarettes. roughly 20% videotaped nicotine. the hunt is on for a killer in the community. two nuns murdered in their home. we'll tell you what clues investigators have to go on, coming up. plus, a program provides service dogs to help children with autism. families say it is a lifesaver, but now that program is facing changes. we'll explain, ahead.

nurse practitioner sister paula meryl and sister margaret helds. police found them brutally murdered in the home they shared in the small community of durant. after a supervisor at a clinic about 20 miles away reported the pair did not show up for work. the local arch diocese telling nbc news there were signs of a break-in in their blue toyota corolla was missing. the car was found abandoned late last night, less than a mile from their home. father gregg plata knew sisters well. >> they came here to mississippi to outreach to the poor using their medical expertise. i'm sure their faith is what got them through this tragedy and will get them through this tragedy of mourning them. >> reporter: according to the citizens of nazareth website, sister margaret from wisconsin was focused on eliminating racism and poverty in the region. >> this is one of the poorest counties. we make a difference in people's

its hiv and malaria medication 5,000%. >> it started last year with martin shkreli and now with the epipen focus, it's really snowballed. and every drugmaker wants to avoid being in that position. >> reporter: kristen welker, nbc 10 news. u.s. olympic swimmer ryan lochte is now a criminal defendant in brazil. the gold medallist is charged with filing a false robber report. lochte apologized days after a drunken incident during the rio olympics that he tried to pass off as an armed robber. lochte is back in the u.s. nbc 10 asked criminal law experts about this case and asked if he could be extradited to brazil. they told us, no, but if lochte travels to another country, he could risk being extradited, depending on that country's treaty with brazil. even if the swimmer stays in the u.s., he may have to deal with this. >> potentially could be exposed to other legal proceedings by way of a deposition or interrogation here. >> the most ironic thing about this sbirn case is, had he just

told the exact truth of what happened, i think americans would have been very sympathetic. >> one expert says lochte may face a similar fine to what a teammate involved in the case paid, that's $11,000. ryan lochte lost several sponsors in the wake of the rio controversy, but last night, he landed a new endorsement deal. lochte is now a spokesman for pine brothers soft dish throat drops. the company's slogans claims its product is forgiving on your throat. pine brothers says people should give lochte a second chance. he'll appear in a series of print and commercial ads for the company. and last night lochte tweeted, quote, thanks to all the folks at pine brothers for your confidence in me. i look forward to making you proud. new this morning, kiplinger has released its state-by-state guide to taxes. it breaks things down to most friendly to least friendly state. here's how the tristate area measures. pennsylvania falls under the mixed tax picture. new jersey is on the least tax friendly list and delaware is on the most tax friendly list.

blind, which had a side program called healing autism. since 2008, 72 families acquired dogs like dawn. >> honestly, we're on a waiting list for nearly two years. >> reporter: joe rivera got his dog for the same reason. >> every day is a new beginning for us. >> reporter: the frustration turned to relief and he became an advocate for service dogs, which is why he grew concerned when he learned from now on, dogs will go to a special-needs school and no longer to families. >> how is placing a dog in a school going to save lives? it's not going to save lives. >> reporter: guiding eyes for the blind told us, starting this fall, we'll be providing dogs to a school in new jersey that specializes in autism. the dogs' handlers will be autism experts who quloi applied behavior analysis, which teaches foundational, academic, and functional life skills. >> it's not a bad thing to use, it's just eliminating the foundation of -- which was, you know, saving lives. >> it saddens me that other families may not have the

opportunity to have this gift. and be able to have normalcy. >> reporter: guiding eyes for the blind says families currently in the program will still receive support and care and a replacement dog if available. matt delucia, nbc 10 news. philly is celebrating national dog day with free adoptions. the animal care and control team is waiving fees on all dogs today. and the pennsylvania spca is reducing the cost of adoption. stop into any of the shelters' locations from 1:00 to 8:00 today. and remember, nbc 10 is committed to clearing the shelters. those cheers are for a special celebration today in university city. thomas pender has worked for the u.s. postal service for 50 years. today he was honored for his devotion to delivering the mail. pender started going door-to-door back when stamps were just 5 cents. he says he has no intention of retiring anytime soon.

breaking news this morning. police in delaware arrest a woman in the murder of a delaware college student, gunned down on his way to work. 19-year-old malcolm evans was shot last month as he drove his car to his job at fedex. police say evans was an innocent victim. they arrested 46-year-old cheryl jennings for the murder. the victim's mother just spoke. >> my family and friends have spent so many sleepless nights, wondering who and why someone would commit such an unspeakable crime against such an amazing young man. >> police say the suspect and the victim did not know each other. the motive is still unclear. you can get more information on this breaking news on the nbc 10 app. well, football season is just getting started.

fix a potentially dangerous flaw that could let hackers take over your iphone. a text message invites users to click on a web link that installs software that would let hackers track your every movement through the phone's camera and app, such as facebook or whatsapp. well, apple has also reportedly filed a patent on a new method to find out who may have stolen your iphone. it could send fingerprint data, video, or audio to authorities. this weekend, a young, local entrepreneur who has set up his own nonprofit is helping local kids get ready for the school year. and for more this morning, we are joined by nia maya davis, founder of the nia maya davis foundation, and demetrius walker, cofounder of hemio.org. so let me start with you and this back-to-school foundation.

>> our foundation has been around for seven years. to date, we have served over 40,000 people, spanning from senior citizens, homeless citizens, and most importantly our youth. today is our eighth annual back-to-school extravaganza and we'll give over a thousand bookbags. but that wouldn't be possible without teaming up with the hemio organization and my friend, demetrius walker. >> we'll get to that in just is a second. but first, tell me why it is so important to do this at back-to-school time. >> because a lot of mothers struggle. it's important for people all around the city. for us to provide bookbags, as well as a host of other fun things, totally free, i feel like that's my obligation, coming from west philadelphia. i feel like i must make a difference, because growing up, i knew kids who didn't have a bookbag going back to school. if we're in a position to provide, that's what we're here to do. >> now you're making a difference. >> yes. >> now, your organization focuses on helping people to overcome poverty. tell me why this is a good match. how this works together.

>> we both come from the inner city. and we understand how important it is to be exposed to something different. a lot of kids, there in the inner city, they don't get a chance to see outside of that. they don't have people that have a positive influence on their life, to show them something different, than their normal circumstances. so we partner up and do certain things to just make sure that we can be examples to our people in the community and just show them that there is another way, then, you know, what you may have been through your whole life. >> and i understand you got an award recently, as well. tell me about that. >> i just won, thanks to god and everybody, we just won the steve harvey best community leader out in vegas, which was a huge event as well as a major award presented by state farm. for all the work we've been doing over the last seven years, they highlighted that on a huge stage. >> pretty amazing. and brings a spotlight to the work you're doing, as well. >> yes. yes. >> thank you so much for being here this morning. really appreciate it. i want to give you guys the information. it's right there on your screen, once again. the free back-to-school

we will see some sunshine, plenty of sunshine all day long. and the temperatures that will be climbing into the 90s, but it's going to feel like it is closer to 100 degrees for most of the area. 92 degrees in chestnut hill will feel like 97 degrees. look at the suburbs. low 90s this afternoon, with partly to mostly sunny skies. kind of hazy outside. 94, the feels-like temperature in lansdale this afternoon. 96 for doylestown. i know there's no sign of those showers we started off with in the lehigh valley, just sunshine today. new jersey, you'll feel the humidity through this afternoon. and even at the shore, evaluated temperatures, 90 degrees for longport, stone harbor, and cape may. but cape may, enough humidity that it's going to feel like near 100 degrees this afternoon. and it will feel like it's in the upper 90s for most of delaware. but that being said, there's an important change that has already started to occur. we're going to see the heat take a break over the weekend, as the humidity comes down. now, we've already had 11 days of 90-degree-plus heat.

and we're likely to get one today, as we go into the 90s. and likely four more days before the end of the month. so we're on track for the warmest august in history. but, later today, you'll feel this change that's already occurred. we're seeing winds now out of the northwest and the forecast is for that to continue this afternoon. that's drier air that starts moving in this evening and will be with us into the weekend. improving conditions this weekend. still hot. 90 degrees on saturday, just not as extreme as today. and 89 degrees on sunday. both days will see humidity lower than today. if you're looking for cooler temperatures, the shore, 81 degrees. the jersey shore for sunday afternoon. the ten-day on 10, yes, 90s today, up to 90 tomorrow, and 89 on sunday. and here comes another heat wave, as we build into the workweek, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms on tuesday, but most of the time, it's going to be completely dry. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, into the low

90s. that will be the seventh heat wave of the summer. and it takes a dramatic turn for the cooler saturday and sunday, next saturday and sunday. the humidity will be dropping and high temperatures that's normal for this time of year, right in the middle 80s. we'll be right back.
