intense. tasha roots was talking with neighbors outside her home late last night. what her neighbors did not know is that would be the last time they would see her. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has the latest. >> reporter: the heavy smoke from this early morning fire woke up the entire neighborhood. the woman who lives inside this home was trapped in the burning house. friends and neighbors say they tried breaking those windows to get the victim out but firefighters later found her body inside. friends and family identified the victim as 45-year-old tasha roots, she's lived here in salem for years and neighbors say she was chatting with them just last night, everything seemed fine but by 3:00 in the morning her house was fully engulfed in flames. witnesses described smoke pouring out of the windows as relatives and friends tried desperately to get her out in time but this fire was far too intense. >> when i came out here i couldn't barely see anything but there was a lot of smoke in the

air. people was trying to get in there to save them, but the flames was too much. >> reporter: friends say roots lived here with her two sons, neither were home at the time and family says she is also related to a wilmington firefighter. the cause of this blaze remains under investigation. in salem city, new jersey, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. a hot day at penn's landing, here is a live look at summer fest which is under way at the blue cross river rink. we have a few folks out enjoying the last hour or so of today's sunshine. and a busy day at fairmont park, we caught a number of people walking and biking this afternoon while others enjoyed cooling off by the schuylkill river. the conditions are comfortable now but we could be in for another heat wave next week. meteorologist karen thomas is here now with your nbc 10 first alert forecast. >> we are more heat on the way.

today not feeling too bad, not too much humidity out there but we did manage to reach 93 degrees in philadelphia. you're looking at current temperatures across the board right now in philadelphia, just down below 90 degrees at 89. mostly clear skies, we've got some wispy beautiful clouds around but we have clear skies there in new jersey as well as the lehigh valley at 88 degrees and it is currently 89 degrees there. we're looking at the stadium in wilmington, blue rock is getting ready to play, so it's going to be a comfortable evening out there tonight and we are looking for dry conditions through the overnight. maybe just a few clouds moving through the skyline, but mostly clear skies. and temperatures will be cooling to the lower 70s, upper 60s, but the heat is on after that. i will be back with more in a b bit. only two games to go in the eagles pre-season and tonight's match up against the colts will really give fans a good look at this year's starters. john clark is live at

indianapolis ahead of tonight's match up. hey, john. >> reporter: yeah, this is the last pre-season game where you are going to see the starters, it's the most important pre-season game, the starters are going to play into the third quarter. it's also the debut of the new birds linebacker steven tul lick and warming up on the field are the running backs, wendell smallwood right there, he will make his debut tonight and should mix in with some of the starters in the second quarter. let's take a look at video we shot within the last hour and a half. dorial green-beckham warming up, he's going to get some reps for the starters. this is the [ inaudible ] pre-season game, they call it the dress rehearsal. >> this week is the third game so it's -- we are preparing almost like a real game so it's about we're veterans, guys that have been around, it's about getting the flow of your weekly routine now, how you are going to watch film, how you will get

the vigil in pen socken where hundreds of people are expected to pay tribute to this little boy. >> reporter: denise, police just blocked off the road here as family and friends begin to arrive. you can see they've put a big banner up against the home where this nightmare began. just a week ago the man inside who lived here with his family is now in jail and the family is glad about that, but it doesn't make it any easier to try to remember that two-year-old no longer in their lives. we saw zacharay tricoche in court tuesday, he is facing a murder charge. prosecutors say jamille baskerville watched his mother get shoved because her boyfriend was mad about the groceries she got. investigators also said he egged the toddler on after punching him in the chest. baskerville died of blunt force trauma. his family has been through a lot this week, especially outside of court, directing a lot of anger at that accused

killer, but tonight they say it's about healing, they hope to at least bring this family together after such a senseless tragedy. we're live in pen socken, i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. and now to the latest on the deadly earthquake that struck central italy earlier this week. mourners gathered for a state funeral for some of the victims tod today. at least 291 people were killed in wednesday's quake but the death toll could rise as recovery efforts continue there. several people are still accounted for. earlier today the italian president visited amatrice, that's the town that suffered the most devastation in the earthquake. the town's mayor showed the president the extent of the damage. he could only go to the edge of town because it was too dangerous to go any further. a welcome change for some upper class men in south jersey,

nbc 10 at rowan university in e% glassbo glassboro, incoming sophomores moved into their new dorm rooms today, it's called holly point commons. the building sits at main and carpenter streets, it's brand new and has 1400 beds. one sophomore we spoke to was beyond excited. >> did you know they got fancy lights and like the elevator, they have an elevator. they don't have elevators in other buildings. they've got a nice elevator. this is a nice building. you can move in, too. it's a nice building. i'm trying to tell you this building is really niles. >> classes begin september 1st. a hometown hero's welcome after winning gold in rio. how new jersey is saluting gymnast laurie hernandez plus how another local olympian is making a big splash. plus something every parent would love to have and nbc 10 got a first look at it today. we will explain how this self installing car seat works.

installing a car seat is no easy task, but a company called for moms has come up with a car seat that installs itself. they showed it off at franklin square today. it uses robotic technology and sensors to make sure the seat is installed properly and then it monitors the seat for any changes before each ride. it checks the levels, the tension and all latches. it also links to your cellphone. a unique opportunity on the battle ship new jersey. stylists have the rivera aveda school use their clippers in the same barber shop where thousands of sailors once got their haircut. the museum and memorial offers kblemt ri buzz cuts today in the ship's barber shop. the event was was to help kids get ready to go back to school.

work. today in walker and denim springs a southern baptist convention cooked hot meals, members of the red cross loaded them into the back of a truck and drove into the affected areas to deliver the food to residents and volunteers. celebrating our local olympians, many of their home towns are hosting celebrations in their honor this weekend. in old bridge township middle sex county thousands came out to show their support for olympic gold medalist laurie hernandez today. people lining the streets as a motorcade escorted hernandez to lombardi field. that's where a ceremony was held honoring the gymnast. >> kelsey werrell day in west hampton township signed by me. >> olympic swimmer kelsey werrell made a big splash today. they read a proclamation to welcome the swimmer home and

presented her with keys to the city. >> it was overwhelming and incredible. we didn't know what to expect when we started planning this and the community has really come together from the beginning to support my family financially. >> werrell also met with some of her young fans, taking pictures and signing autographs. philadelphia native kyle lowry is back home and giving back to his community. the olympic gold medalist hosted a youth basketball clinic at mastery school. he once played for villanova is now a point guard for the toronto raptors. dozens of kids will start the year off right thanks to a local boxing gym. joe hand boxing partnered with philadelphia firefighters and paramedics union local 22 and together they bought 100 backpacks and filled them with school supplies to give to students in northern liberty. in 1983 joe hand boxing is more than a gym, it has a computer lab and offers due torse to kids in the neighborhood two times a

week. summer weekends at the shore winding down and a lot of folks are trying to get in one more trip before the labor day holiday. the number of lifeguards, however, watching over the water is starting to dwindle and that's because school is about to start for a lot of college students. but for some the ocean breeze is all they need. >> it's great. it's one of the last weekends of the summer so it's great to get out here early, get a nice run in. one, it's pretty quiet, not too quiet. i love running on the boardwalk. >> businesses are hoping to have a big turnout for the upcoming holiday weekend. and i keep saying, boy, the weather cooperating with anybody down at the shore this past weekend. nice weather is continuing. really the shore is the cool spot even at this hour. 82 degrees in atlantic city. close to 90 in philadelphia, we topped out at 93 degrees in philadelphia today and we're close to 90 right now in wilmington. still 88 degrees in allentown.

temperatures will be cooling off just a bit but we talk about the shore relief down here, we have that northeasterly flow coming in off the ocean helping to keep things feeling pretty good on the shoreline, the delaware beaches as well as south jersey today. that on-shore flow will continue into tomorrow, could bring a few clouds at the shore tomorrow, but, don't worry, we should stay dry. 93 actually our high temperature today in philadelphia, we are expected to dig down just a little bit, 89, but look at this. heat wave coming our way, it's a good potential for monday, tuesday, wednesday. a lot of kids are starting back to school on monday. hopefully they've got light t-shirts they can wear, maybe the schools have air conditioning. then we will be dropping down towards the end of the week so we have to hang on feeling a bit cooler by friday. clear skies because of the high pressure for now but then we do have the shortwave that moves through as we make our way through our sunday. still a nice day tomorrow, but a few more clouds filtered into the forecast as we head into sunday night into monday.

we should stay dry as this sort of just sinks here to the south but as i mentioned just bringing in a few more clouds, can't rule out the possibility of just a light stray shower monday evening out of that system. as we said, a lot of people trying to squeak out the last bit of fun at the beach and this is the way your forecast is looking. in brig an teen plenty of sunshine tomorrow, wildwood more of the same. plenty of sunshine, 82 degrees there and it's going to feel really nice in cape may also. 86 for a high temperature. as i mentioned late in the day we could have those clouds thicken as the winds continue to come in off of the shore. we're checking temperatures across the board for tomorrow, we're definitely going to have plenty of sunshine, high pressure staying in place for at least a little bit. rattner 87, with he see that in quakertown as well, warm again in allentown, trenton, ocean city, plenty of sunshine, 80 degrees, we will call it warm and sunny for our sunday. we will go to the ten-day forecast.

here again we see these 90s, we will be jumping back up, dew points will be on the rise so we are going to feel a bit more humid. just hang on. as we get to thursday and especially friday we will have the sunshine, 80 degrees, and we start to warm up just a little bit, but maybe that will be the end of our 90 degree weather. we will have to see. enjoy. the future of the sixers has krashld the jersey shore. we will hear from one of the sixers corner stones as the team takes commence. it's game day for the birds. we will go live from indianapolis for more on the latest before kickoff.

the eagles play their third pre-season game tonight against the colts in indianapolis. the starters are expected to play into the third quarter. their last significant playing time until the regular season. guess who, john clark is covering the game and joins us. hey, john. >> reporter: hey, danny. yeah, this is the biggest pre-season game, the most important one and the starters will play into the third quarter. the eagles might mix in some younger players in the second quarter with the starters. of course, you're going to see the new linebacker steven tulloch and dorial green-beckham warming up pregame, he will get more snaps tonight and probably get in in the second quarter with the snaps as well. they like what they've seen from dorial in practice this week and want to have him mr. on what he has been doing. >> i feel like it's a great

opportunity, especially for me to, you know, move from one team to another and me being here a short period of time and being able to play, i mean, it's a big opportunity for me to go out there and show them why i'm here, like what i came here to do. that's my mantra, to stay focused and do that little things and impress my teammates. >> reporter: and the eagles rookie running back wendell smallwood will make his debut tonight, he will probably get mixed in with the starters in the second quarter as well. he has been upset that he had to sit out the first two pre-season games with that quad injury. he is so excited for tonight. >> it was real tough, but them guys just being in my ear and telling me, hey, slow it down, relax, take your time and not really putting that pressure on me to come out in practice, i already was putting enough pressure on myself. them guys having my back and slowing me down and some of the vets helping me out, so i think that definitely helped me get better and take my time with things.
