onto the tarmac at l.a.x. looking for anyway out of the terminal they could find. a loud noise mistaken for shots fired inside at least three terminals triggering a wild mass evacuation at the nation's second largest airport just before 9:00 p.m. >> why are we running? >> security said to run. >> security said to run. >> reporter: there was confusion on the ground and uncertainty in the air. >> ground, this is united 488. apparently there's an active shooting in the terminal. can you please advise us what's happening? >> reporter: the airport shutdown for more than an hour. gridlock on the road and in the sky. >> you're not going to be able to get into terminal 8. there's a situation going on there. >> reporter: our own lester holt was there arriving at l.a.x. during the incident reporting live on facebook. >> we're about to walk up the stairs and the door opened and people began flooding out,

passengers, security people, i heard shots fired or active shooter, run. people didn't really know what to do. >> reporter: lester spoke to witnesses inside the terminal. >> what did you hear? >> we didn't hear anything. we saw people run so we started running also. >> reporter: adding to the chaos, guns drawn, police approached this guy dressed as zoro. the frightening lockdown comes after a similar scare at jfk. police sweeping that airport after a similar report. this morning back at l.a.x., the all clear but only after this terrifying scene. again, police believe those reports of shots fired was simply a loud noise. this incident triggered nationwide delays and some diversions. all of this comes three years after a tsa agent was shot and killed here at the airport. savannah? >> miguel almaguer at l.a.x. thank you.

on the east coast, millions from the carolinas to the gulf coast are bracing for possible torrential downpours as the atlantic hurricane season kicks into high gear. mr. roker is here tracking it all. good morning. >> we got a lot of stuff going on right now. the season is really packing a punch. we've got a major hurricane in gaston. we've got another system coming off the african coast and two systems will affect the east coast before ait's all over. we start with number 9 to the north of havana. it's 155 miles west-southwest of key west. 35-mile-per-hour winds. it's sometime thursday morning going to make landfall possibly as a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane. we have to watch this very closely. the big problem is going to be the rain. we're talking some areas 6 to 8 inches and that's going to cause problems. we also have a system that's off the carolina coast. it's going to come onshore and bring more rain. but that's just going to brush the shoreline.

and then we're watching activity in the gulf. a tropical wave will bring another 3 to 5 inches as you can see and there could be possibly flooding throughout southeast texas and if that's not enough, we've got two systems out in the pacific. we've got hurricane lester, not holt, and tropical storm madeleine which is now hurricane madeleine. it's going to brush the big island sometime wednesday evening with 80-mile-per-hour winds and heavy rain so both the atlantic and pacific very active right now. >> hurricanes aren't all that common for hawaii, right? >> they get brushed but they don't usually take direct hits. >> thank you, al. donald trump appearing to address his signature issue of immigration with a major speech in arizona this week. facing accusations he's given

contra contradictory answers. hallie jackson is live for us. >> reporter: one of the bedrocks of donald trump's campaign for months and now the candidate says he'll deliver a major speech on wednesday in phoenix. it comes after he spent the weekend preparing to face-off against hillary clinton at their debate next month and now issuing a new challenge to his democratic rival. donald trump hinting at clarity on a topic that needs it. his immigration position and what to do with the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living here. here's what he said back in november. >> you're going to have a deportation force. you're going to do it humanely. >> he's not talking about a deportation force, but he is talking about being fair and humane. >> reporter: trump's surrogates insist he's moving forward. >> you'll find out from donald trump very shortly. >> reporter: as trump prepares

to deliver an immigration speech wednesday in arizona, he says, he's also looking ahead to the first debate with hillary clinton. both candidates preparing. they're playbooks, very different. trump is keeping it loose. no thick binders or mock podiums. instead informal chats at his weekend home with chris christie and his kids. clinton laying low to study carefully timing her answers to fit debate speaking limits. her advisers playing the expectations game warning trump could be a formidable foe. trump now challenging clinton to release more detailed medical records. pledging if she does, he will too. trump's physical fitness in the spotlight again after nbc news interviewed trump's physician exclusively standing his original assessment that if

effects elected, trump would be the fittest president ever. a clinton aide tells nbc news they see no reason for her to release more medical records saying it's up to trump to produce a legitimate and detailed letter of his own. and new this morning, donald trump is now expanding his tv ads. a new one out and his campaign tells nbc news just moments ago he's buying $10 million more of air time expanding to five new swing states including the battlegrounds of virginia and colorado. over the weekend, by the way, trump raised eyebrows with something else. a tweet about the death of basketball star dwyane wade's cousin who was shot and killed in chicago. trump writing, just what i have been saying. african-americans will vote trump. that struck some as insensitive, savannah. only hours did trump tweet condolences to wade's family. >> hallie jackson, thank you.

we have the latest in that shooting death of nialdridge. her tragic death drawing attention to the city's ongoing problem with gun violence as we learn two men now charged in her murder had a long criminal history. nbc's kevin tibbles joins us now with more. kevin, good morning. >> reporter: another murder on the streets of chicago. this time the cousin of well known basketball sensation dwyane wade and has people in this city saying enough is enough. a family heartbroken. >> this is my baby girl. >> reporter: the city of chicago once again caught in the crosshairs of senseless violence. aldridge, a mother of four, shot and killed friday while pushing her 3 week old baby girl in a stroller on the city's south side. >> this killing needs to stop.

what is it doing to us? >> reporter: two brothers charged with her murder on sunday are being held without bail. police say they were allegedly gunning for someone else. a man who was targeted simply because he came from a different neighborhood. >> these two offenders are the prime example of the challenge we face here in chicago with repeat gun offenders that don't care who they shoot, don't care whose life they take, and clearly, clearly don't fear the consequences of their action. >> aldridge's first time cousin of dwyane wade used social media to speak out. my cousin was killed today in chicago. another act of senseless gun violence. four kids lost their mom for no reason. unreal. enough is enough. in a twist a day before the shooting, the nba star addressed the plague of gun violence in chicago on espn.

us. good morning. >> reporter: under scottish law they could face two years in prison, a fine or both. appearing in a scottish courtroom this morning, two united airlines pilots accused of showing up for their transatlantic flight to the u.s. saturday morning too intoxicated to fly. veteran pilots were taken into custody here at glasgow airport minutes before they were scheduled to leave for newark with 150 people onboard. one passenger tweeting what's going on? police in the tunnel very little information. veteran pilot captain john cox. >> this is one of the areas where pilots and all flight crew members have a virtual zero tolerance for impairment for any reason. >> reporter: in a statement united airlines said the two pilots have been removed from service and their flying duties. we are cooperating with authorities and will conduct our

own investigation as well. among passengers at newark airport, disbelief. >> these people have a huge responsibility. so many lives that they have to be responsible for. >> reporter: flight 162 finally took off from glasgow saturday with a new crew nearly ten hours late landing in newark at 8:32 p.m. the faa prohibits the consumption of alcohol within eight hours of the flight. most airlines make that rule 12 hours. we've had about a half dozen cases over the last few years of pilots attempting to fly intoxicated. savannah, back to you. >> all right. tom costello, thank you. there are new developments this morning in the murder of two nuns in a small mississippi town. police have arrested and charged a suspect in that case that left their community reeling as mourners gather to pay respects at a memorial mass today. here's nbc's janet shamlian. >> reporter: this morning a heartbroken community remembering two selfless servants. sister paula merrill and sister

margaret howl. >> they were always doing something for others. >> reporter: sunday night friends and family turned out for an emotional wake at the church where the nuns taught bible class. >> there's a reason for everything. we may not understand today. but we will understand. >> authorities say rodney sanders who lived in the area has been charged with two counts of capital murder after confessing to killing the women. the motive still unknown and no word on how sanders was implicated. at the time of the killing he was on probation. he served six years after being sentenced for armed robbery in 1986. police say sanders became a person of interest early in their investigation following tips from the community. >> it hurt me in my heart. i love these two ladies. >> reporter: the nuns were found stabbed in their home after failing to show at the clinic

confessions. when you hear that, what's your reaction? >> nothing. i already have my answer anyway. i have my answers to what happened to natalee and he's sitting in prison in peru. >> van der sloot is serving time in peru for the murder of flores who he killed in 2010 on the five-year anniversary of holloway's disappearance. any part of you that looked at his sentence in peru and said i have to consider that part of his sentence for natalee. >> no because it's not. >> at this point after 11 years what does justice look like for you? >> justice is being served for stephanie flores thank god but justice has not been served for natalee. it would be justice to see him serve prison time in the united states. that would be justice for natalee. >> reporter: van der sloot faces charges in america. he's accused of extorting money from the holloways in exchange for false information on

natalee's remains. before he's kextradited to the u.s., he has to serve his time in purreru which won't be until 2038. will it be hard? >> no. i left him in prison in peru. i feel good about that. >> law enforcement officials asked if she would be open to a deal. she said no. >> there are no deals. i don't want a deal. >> today beth holloway focuses on things that make her happy. family. motivational speaking and spending summers in montana managing a horse ranch moving forward yet never forgetting. for "today," joe fryer, nbc news, montana. >> tomorrow in our series, we'll revisit the saga of drew peterson. the man suspected in the murder

he's also issuing a challenge to clinton to release detailed medical records. the clinton firing back that she already has and that it is trump who should release a legitimate detailed letter from a doctor after his physician told nbc news last week he wrote trump's medical assessment in just five minutes. savannah, carson? >> kristen welker, thank you very much. now to los angeles international airport slowly getting back to normal after a major security scare. reports of gunfire resulted in chaos. it was a false alarm. it disrupted the whole airport. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is at l.a.x. for us. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police have given the all clear here after some very tense and scary moments overnight. just before 9:00 p.m., police say they received multiple reports of shots fired inside several terminals here. thousands of passengers ran for the streets. others spilled onto the tarmac as they tried to get away from some potential danger. turns out later police said those reports of shots fired were simply loud noises but that

didn't calm the chaos, at least not immediately. officers had to sweep through all of the terminals looking for a suspected gunman who was never here. police say it shutdown the terminal for well over an hour as miles and miles of traffic built up. there were nearly 300 cancellations. other flights were also diverted and delayed. a big mess here at l.a.x. things are slowly returning to normal here. carson, back to you. >> miguel almaguer, thank you very much. manhunt for three dangerous inmates who escaped from a prison in northwestern louisiana this weekend. the inmates jumped over two rolls of razor wire fence late saturday night. one of the men was serving time for attempted murder and armed robbery. police are warning residents there to use extreme caution if they see those suspects. a major announcement this morning from the maker of epipens following recent outrage over the high price of the

terror at me. a bomb is going to go off. something is happening. didn't immediately think gunshots. i'm asking everybody and this woman says someone has a gun. i turned around. i ran right back into that restaurant. i went straight back into their kitchen. there's a woman holding her baby. there's people in tears. shear panic. and then they come over the overhead and we find out that -- we found out way later that there was not actually a shooter. they had a guy dressed as zoro that they apprehended but he was just a wacky guy. >> lester holt was there as well. he was landing. >> how long did this go on, billy? >> it went on for hours. they had to take everybody, every passenger had to be emptied out of the terminals and then they had to go through tsa screening again. at that point i said it doesn't matter. i'll never make it to the show on time. i got back in a cab and hopped in bed with my wife and my

we are back with dr. oz who has his finger on the pulse of your health and ours as well. >> okay. you gave us three important tests. you already have one down here. >> blood pressure optimal is 120/80 or below. yours is high. only because i'm sitting next to you. white coat syndrome. in addition, busy work day. but you want it to be less than 120/80 if possible. do you have a pulse even? that's really low. >> my resting heart rate is about 65. >> people athletic have heart rates in the 60. yours is reasonable as well. when is the last time you had

your blood pressure checked? >> i've not been to the doctor in two years. okay. let's not judge. i'm going to be honest. i have insurance of course. i'm one of those people i made a point of going to get my annual female exam. i've not been to the doctor in two years. i know, i know, i know. >> easy to get at home these devices. simple. here's why it's so important. number one cause of ageing is your blood pressure. this is what your artery looks like. i want you to pretend for example that you have a little diabetes, which is like glass shards. scrape that. you start to actually dig gashes in there. you see that hole you made there. this is what happens. once you get cracks in there, the body gets upset and blood pressure is a hammer. take this hammer if you don't mind. hit it right about there. >> that was a good hit. if you hit it here, i guess not.

i had this fixed up. there it is. there. it's really bad blood pressure. once you have a hole in your artery, you have to fix it. what's the best way to fix a hole? you use plaster. unfortunately the body's plaster is something called cholesterol. you take cholesterol and slather this on there and you get not appealing material and over time it begins to look like plaque. >> that's lining your blood vessel. >> we need to cut out salt. >> pressure, stress, number one problem we find in our surveys is probably the biggest driver. being short-term stressful environment like doing the show here or exercising raises your blood pressure but long-term stress you can't get away from it doesn't cause this plaque buildup. don't want that inside of you. >> waist line and why is waist measurement so important? >> the other way of dropping your blood pressure is to drop

your waist. hold on. there's a lot of stuff including squeezing of your kidneys which is responsible for regulating your blood pressure. your body will raise the blood pressure. men don't weigh themselves and women weigh too much. your waist size is the most accurate technique. everyone at home listen carefully. men over the age of 40, we take the belt and put it down there. >> still wearing a size 32. >> 28 over here, baby. >> the sweet spot is take a simple measuring tape around your hips. up to your belly button there. suck it in now. you're 27. 27 inches is the number you have to remember. it needs to be less than half your height. just to put numbers on it. for men it should be less than 40 inches. for women less than 35 inches. that's the rule of thumb. easy to follow. it works for kids.

for young women, they get caught up in weight. causing eating issues. use a measuring tape. >> next up -- >> please have a seat. >> the quiz is important here. i'm going to try to figure out whether you have something to worry about with your memory or not. you put five words up there before we went to break. you need to be able to remember those words for at least five to ten minutes. it's been about that long now. so you guys -- stand, if you don't mind. i put a memory quiz here. there's your chalk. write down those five words. do not look at each other's cards. do it yourself. don't lock at what they're writing here. you should be able to remember those for that short period of time and recall them. if you can't get it right, i'll help you out by showing you a list of words which you should be able to recognize. we have face. >> velvet. >> church, daisy, red.

core out just like that and then just score the skin. we let it cook inside there for maybe 30, 40 seconds or so. we'll just peel this back. >> put it in an ice bath. >> out of the water into the ice bath. let it cool down. basically once it's peeled, you'll skqueeze it like this an take this peeled tomato and in a hot plan, extra virgin olive oil. we have these tomatoes. we're going to cook them for about 30 to 35 minutes. salt and then once it's done we'll crush it and cook it for about 30 minutes or so. i don't like to cook my tomato sauce anymore than 40 minutes. >> you add reserve tomato juice from squeezing. >> exactly. >> good thing i got you here. i would have forgot that. >> as far as making the pasta -- >> this is good stuff.
