florida west coast and florida panhandle, the center of this hurricane is still offshore in the gulf of mexico. so yes, category 1 hurricane now. a weak category 1 hurricane, but it still has time to strengthen a little bit more before the center moves onlands. at that point it would start to weaken. there you see it, the rain bands around it, very heavy. some of them spawning tornado warnings as far away as the east coast of florida. we had a couple of tornado warnings around the tampa bay area. you see the heavy rain moving onshore, especially north. that's where you see the orange and the red. so a little bit closer into the tampa area. windy, rainy conditions. they've been dealing with flooding already over the last couple of days. now we're looking at the florida panhandle. tallahassee will be in the line of a direct impact from the center of this storm. tallahassee now starting to see some of the rain moving onshore. this is their first view of rainfall. but that will only be getting heavier as this storm approaches land. the center of this hurricane,
4:01 pm
there it is, right there, about 130 miles away from land. so again, it's expected to move along the florida panhandle as we go through tonight and very early tomorrow morning. and this hurricane will be causing very high winds through florida. and also some storm surge. let's look at some of the buoy data. winds 40 miles an hour offshore. wave heights close to 11 feet. closer to the center of the storm and florida panhandle, wave heights close to 20 feet. winds gusting near 50 miles an hour. but again, those conditions expected to be stronger as the storm approaches land. now, this storm will be impacting part of our area over the labor day holiday weekend. so we've adjusted the forecast because of that. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has your weather neighborhood by neighborhood. >> no doubt it will impact our area over the holiday weekend. i know the timing is bad, but that's the way it is. this is one area that is going to get hit pretty hard by this.
4:02 pm
this is cape may. that's a live shot now. everything is nice and calm and peaceful. but it's not going to stay that way. this is where hermine is now, with a 75-mile-an-hour maximum wind. it doesn't have to be a hurricane by the time it gets up here to cause a lot of problems. the track is going to take it inland. that, of course, will let it weaken, at least for a while. but then the latest track takes it close to the north carolina coast, and then offshore. once it goes offshore, it has a chance of eventually regenerating into a hurricane. this is the track in a 24-hour period, okay? that goes from saturday to sunday. that's a long distance in 24 hours. watch what happens the next two days. it hardly goes anywhere. there's sunday, monday, tuesday. not far offshore. so it looks like it could impact
4:03 pm
our coastline all the way into tuesday. here's the future cast showing where the rain and the center is going to be. by 8:00 a.m. saturday, the rain is still to the south of our area. so we start off the weekend dry. but look what happens as we go into sunday morning. the rain is here. but not so much to the north and west. the heaviest rain is at the shore. the strongest winds are at the shore. and then if anything, by sunday evening, the center gets closer to the coast. this storm is going to do some weird things, as we go into next week. sunday the heaviest rain, highest wind, new jersey and delaware. then you would think it would be moving offshore, and weakening, but no, it's strengthening perhaps as we go into monday night and tuesday. this is from the european model. the most accurate overall in the world. and it does project that we're
4:04 pm
going to be seeing potentially strong winds all the way into tuesday at the shore. it's a hurricane now, with 75-mile-an-hour winds. the farther track to the east has an impact. it's also likely to stall. and less rain to the north and west. we'll break that down a little bit later. >> looking forward to that, glenn, thank you. count on the nbc 10 app to plan out your holiday weekend. get live radar, the latest forecasts and weather alerts for your neighborhood or holiday destination. it's a free download. gunfire sent shoppers in an outlet mall running this afternoon. police say a gunman shot a store employee at the tanger outlet in atlantic city. the shooting happened inside a store. ted greenberg is live on that scene. ted, police believe this was a murder, and attempted suicide? >> reporter: jackie, investigators are calling it a

new developments now in the septa slowdown. the transit agency is warning regional rail riders that lines could get even more crowded after labor day. as students head back to school. septa has been dealing with shortages all summer because of a defect that sidelined a third of its fleet. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has an update on the time line to get back up to speed. >> reporter: for the very first time since fourth of july weekend, passengers get on a silver liner 5 septa train. >> i wanted to make sure they got it right this time. don't rush a job, you know. >> reporter: with all aboard, it safely departs fox chase station, back on track, but at least 100 more just like it need to be repaired. >> the first cars are coming out onto the system, as fast, but as safely as we can to service. >> reporter: today officials showed off the bensalem manufacturing plant where replacement parts are made. >> this is our plasma cutting.

carrying passengers again. in fox chase, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. hermine strengthened into a hurricane by 3:00 this afternoon. it doesn't have much room left to strengthen at least dramatically, because the land is getting close. the heaviest of the rains still offshore on the west coast. and now just coming onshore in the florida panhandle. sometimes, though, way ahead of the storm, you can get severe storms and tornadoes. and that is possible in parts of florida. you can see these rain bands quite clearly. tremendous amounts of rain. that's where the strongest gusts are. and the buoys that sheena was showing are gusting in some places up close to 60 miles an hour. you can see the eye pretty clearly. it's not completely circular. this is not an intense hurricane. like i said, it's not that far away from land. so there's a limit on how much it can strengthen.
4:15 pm
75-mile-an-hour winds. it is picking up speed. it's moving at 14 miles an hour. so we'll make landfall during the night tonight. it also is going to be staying inland. and that means weakening as it goes through tonight and into tomorrow. and you can see the zone, the possible track pretty narrow. we're pretty sure it's going to be near charleston tomorrow. then moves offshore. from saturday to sunday, it moves along. after sunday, it doesn't move much at all. and that's one of my concerns down the road. early next week, this thing spinning offshore day after day after day keeps pushing the water right near the coastline. and we could see some pretty significant, serious coastal flooding before this is over with. here's the futurecast. as you can see, the core of the
4:16 pm
hurricane, down in georgia by tomorrow morning. so tomorrow we're fine. we have high clouds increasing early saturday. we're still okay. then it starts coming into delaware. there's 10:00 a.m. still dry in philadelphia. still dry in atlantic city. but barely. and then later on during the day, or in the evening, the rain starts to come in. you notice not much, if anything, north and west. that, of course, will be determined by the track. you'll also see as we go into sunday, see the moisture coming back? as the storm is spinning, it's going to spin moisture back, and we could get some pretty heavy rain around here during the day on sunday. heavy rain and gusty winds. so for saturday, afternoon rain new jersey and delaware, spreading north at night. sunday is the worst of the weather. rain heavy at times with the gusty winds.
4:17 pm
of course, the highest winds at the shore. and monday, the rain at the shore may continue with gradual clearing. and windy conditions inland. here's the details about the shore. saturday, the rain doesming in the afternoon. winds 15 to 30 miles an hour. that's a nasty day. but nothing compared to sunday. sunday rain heavy at times, winds 35 to 40 or higher. and monday, the rain lingers, winds northwest 20 to 30. unfortunately, we may still have windy conditions on tuesday. maybe even wednesday of next week. so here's the labor day weekend. not looking too great. look at the lehigh valley saturday. looks dry. sunday, the heaviest rain, philadelphia, south jersey, jersey shore, delaware. the least amount of rain is going to be p.a. suburbs, montgomery bucks county, lehigh valley, berks county. when it's all over with.
4:18 pm
by monday it's still raining at the jersey shore. and possibly part of delaware. delaware beaches. but the sun starts to come out and that will allow the temperatures to go back up into the 80s. and eventually later next week, into the 90s. >> all right, glenn. as we know, labor day weekend is almost here. her cane hermine as you heard from glenn it's going to rain for part of the weekend. >> brandon hudson is live in atlantic city where the holiday weekend fun is already getting started. i guess they're trying to get it started ahead of some rain. >> reporter: that's right, keith and jacqueline. there is a couple of raindrops that have fallen since we started talking. but this is the last weekend, the last big weekend to come down here for the summer season to the jersey shore, before the kids get back to school. what's going on right now behind me, you can see people walking up and down the boardwalk visiting these restaurants and businesses. some of them will be coming over here to this concert, over to my

on hurricane hermine. it's expected to make landfall in the next couple of hours along florida's coast. our team of meteorologists are tracking every movement of this hurricane. >> let's start with sheena parveen and how herminea is moving now towards us. >> her mine is moving faster than earlier today. it is a category 1 hurricane. still in the gulf of mexico. taking plenty of moisture and swinging it onto the coast in florida. it's moving to the north-northeast 14 miles an hour. winds sustained at 75 right around the center. heavy rain bands approaching the florida gulf coast here. a lot of these north of the tampa bay area. but more heading toward tampa. some of the heaviest bands moving over gainesville, florida. we also have more rain bands heading toward tallahassee. this is the general direction where we expect hurricane hermine to make landfall later on tonight. we're only hours away now.
4:31 pm
the center, there is the eye of the hurricane right there, about 120 miles offshore from where it is expected to move in. that's where we find some of the strongest winds right in the eye of the storm. here's a look at the buoy data in the gulf of mexico. we've seen things increasing over the last 30 minutes or so. winds gusting near 40 miles an hour near the tampa bay area. wave heights over 10 feet. closer to the center, closer to the florida panhandle, some wave heights are around 20 feet, 24 feet one buoy reading. gusting near 60 miles an hour. so this is a weak category 1 hurricane, but a very strong storm as it starts to approach florida. again, later on tonight. but it will be heading up the eastern seaboard as we go into the labor day weekend. for more on our weekend forecast, because it's all going to depend on the track of the storm, let's send it over to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> yeah, sheena, because hermine is covering such a large area,
4:32 pm
even if the center is 100, 150 miles away, we're still going to have a significant impact at places like this, cape may. nice and quiet now. but it's not going to stay that way. right now, we see the center of the storm, not that far offshore, but it's headed right toward an area that can really get some awful storm surges. and you may hear about this in the big bend area later tonight and tomorrow. the track does look like it's going to be inland for quite a while. that will allow the storm to weaken. but then as it moves back offshore, there's pretty warm water out here. unusually warm. remember, we set a record off the atlantic city beach this summer. warmest ocean temperature. offshore, very warm. we have chances of regeneration
4:33 pm
out there. there's the big movement from saturday to sunday. but sunday to monday to tuesday, not much movement there. everything just keeps spinning around. it's just going to keep spinning those waves into the jersey shore. and that is not good. now, you can see with the rainfall by saturday morning, we're still dry. but later on, during the day, and into saturday night, sunday morning, the rain comes in, and then if anything, it pushes westward. and increases during the day on sunday, and maybe even into monday. i'll break down what areas are going to get the heaviest rain a little bit later. >> all right, glenn. count on the nbc 10 app to track hermine and the impact we could get this weekend. you can get live radar and alerts for your neighborhood or holiday destination. the app is a free download.

the eye is not symmetrical. it's a perfect circle, that's how you can tell it's stronger. this is the coastline of florida up here. it's called the big bend. because of the way it's structured, as the water piles up here, it just gets higher and higher and higher. this is one of the worst places in florida for a potential storm surge and that's what's happening. the eye, again, a little bit oddball there, it's not a complete circle. 75-mile-an-hour minimal hurricane as we call it, moving 14 miles an hour toward the north-northeast. so it will be making landfall tonight. then it does track inland, which will make it weaken. but only partially. because some of the circulation is still going to be over water. we don't expect it to drop that much. there's 50 miles an hour by saturday afternoon. and then the problem is, three

days, one, two, three, we're talking about tuesday, it's still sitting offshore. and it's such a big storm, that it's going to be impacting at least the coast by tuesday and maybe even beyond that. here's the future cast. we go through saturday morning. we're dry. but saturday later in the day, especially delaware, south jersey, getting some of that rain. this model tapers off saturday night. and then spins it back westward. you know, like you do with a snowstorm sometimes. look at that. look at that heavy rain coming in for saturday night and sunday. so sunday we're really talking about downpours in a good bit of the area. and how much? just by sunday morning. 6:00 a.m. those areas are red. southern delaware, sussex county, parts of salem, cumberland county, parts of burlington county.
4:49 pm
that's three inches of rain. the farther north and west you go, you go up toward i-78, and you're getting hardly any rain out of it. what a variation across the region. so that afternoon rain goes through new jersey and delaware, spreads north saturday night. could potentially affect rihanna. but we're hoping it's at least light by then. but it's going to be heavier on sunday. wind increases on sunday, too. monday, the rain lingers at the shore. you may see improvement inland for your barbecues monday afternoon. at the shore, of course, this is where the worst weather's going to be. rain develops in the afternoon with winds 15 to 30. then 25 to 40, maybe higher gusts on sunday. and it's still going to be windy monday. and the winds are going to be blowing onshore, the waves are going to pile up, and we could see some pretty significant coastal flooding by the time

this is over with. again, saturday, the rain in philadelphia, that doesn't come until later in the day. the p.a. suburbs should stay dry during the day, late hours, lehigh valley may even see a little sunshine earlier. but the rain gets heavier at the jersey shore and delaware. heaviest at the jersey shore, delaware, south jersey, philadelphia. and on monday, i just have the rain at the jersey shore, and possibly in parts of delaware right now. that is the look right now. now, we can see some changes as we go into next week. we get new information, we get new updates coming in. that's the ten-day forecast. once this whole thing moves out, it goes back into the 90s. but i'm just concerned that once it goes offshore, it has a chance to strengthen again. because of the warm water. and not move very much. that could cause additional problems next week. >> glenn, you were saying there's changes ahead. a lot of people are asking me,

is there a chance this thing could miss us completely? i'd love for clarity. >> if you just track the center, it looks like it does, miss us completely. but the storm is so large, that it's not just the point. now, the strongest part of it now is the right side. that would be out in the ocean side. so if it stays structured like it is now, we'll have less of an impact than if everything wraps around like that one computer model is showing. >> gotcha. >> still something we have to watch closely. stay tuned to your broadcasts. glenn, thank you. now to this. phillies new gorilla is causing quite a stir. we showed you the zoo's newest addition yesterday. why this new little one is a focus of a petition.
