schwartz. we begin with sheena with details on where this storm is right now. sheena? >> yeah, jacqueline, it's still spinning in the gulf of mexico. it is a category 1 hurricane, so it strengthened this afternoon. it still has a little more time to strengthen in the warm waters of the gulf before it makes landfall somewhere along the florida panhandle. right now it's moving to the north-northeast 14 miles an hour, swinging heavy rain bands into florida. like you mentioned, jacqueline, yes, we do have a tropical storm watch for the jersey shore and delaware beaches through sunday. this means tropical storm conditions are possible over part of your labor day weekend. we could see wind gusts near 50 miles an hour. expect rain through parts of the area. and of course, that increase in cloud cover. closer look at hurricane hermine, well-defined eye of this hurricane. that eye about 110 miles offshore, near the tallahassee area, where it's expected to be moving inland. so the florida panhandle is going to see the strongest winds from this thing. we just so happen to have a buoy
6:01 pm
near the height of this thing. winds gusting near 60 miles an hour. this is really churning up the waters in the gulf of mexico. heavy rain bands moving onshore near the tallahassee area and florida panhandle. and also, through gainesville, we have more heavy rain about to move onshore near that area. and the tampa bay area, look at this line of very heavy rain. we see tornado warnings through parts of the tampa area already today. that's usually what happens when the rain bands move onshore. they spawn tornadoes. winds gusting near 50 miles an hour just off the shore of the tampa area. now, this storm as it moves on land later on tonight, eventually it will be making its way into our area and impacting our labor day weekend forecast. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is standing by with the updated track on this hurricane, and what it means for us. glenn. >> we get computer model updates constantly. and the track, of course, is going to be very critical as to
6:02 pm
not only how heavy the rain gets at the shore, but how far inland any significant rain does get. now, we are watching that storm. it is going to be making landfall tonight. as sheena showed you, one of those terrible bands is about to hit tampa. they've already had flooding. and now they're just going to get pounded by this. now, it's expected to strengthen a little bit in the next 12 hours. and even as it tracks inland over the next 24 hours, it doesn't really weaken that much. because some of the circulation is going to stay over water. especially on the strong side. the right side. then as it comes across north carolina, this is a window of possibilities here. so it doesn't look like it's coming straight up to philadelphia, but it doesn't really have to, because the storm is large. it's not just a point here. but by sunday afternoon, a 60-mile-an-hour storm just off
6:03 pm
the new jersey shore, that is no picnic. and the other bad thing is, is that it slows down or even stalls over the following couple of days, causing those waves and the waters and the coastal flooding to continue, or even build a little bit more. we'll start breaking down who's going to get what a little bit later. >> all right, glenn. we have our exclusive new radar on wheels closer to the storm to help us bring you the most accurate and up-to-date information about hermine. here's a video of storm ranger in maryland. you saw that a moment ago. here's the radar it provides. storm ranger will continue to head south into north carolina during the evening hours. as this hurricane moves up the coast, make sure you stay with us. the track could change as we get to this important holiday weekend. download the nbc 10 app to stay alert wherever you're going. now to this. a real scare for shoppers at the walk outlets in atlantic city this afternoon. police forced them to stay

6:14 pm
gang related murder in philadelphia. when he was 16. next month, he turns 60. >> the best feeling anybody can have. coming out of prison after all these years. have my family. you know. >> reporter: jones maintained his innocence from the beginning, it was the supreme court ruling in january that helped unlock his freedom. that ruling banned mandatory life sentences for juveniles retroactively. that means lower courts would have to consider all life sentences for any kids sentenced to life without parole. >> before my life was controlled, you know. like if i had to use the bathroom, you got to get permission. if i wanted to go to school, you got to get permission. i was in a controlled environment. being out here, you know -- >> reporter: out here he learned quickly involves many choices. >> like eggs or bacon.
6:15 pm
>> reporter: he said he missed his sisters, missed a lifetime. >> went to prison when i was 16 years old. i'm grown up. the average 16-year-old will go to school or get an education, go to college. meet a nice girl, get married, settle down, or go to work. that's what i miss. i just want to go to the zoo, go to the park, you know, go to museums. all the things that i missed. >> reporter: while this has been a monumental day, ty's lawyers say they're still working toward exoneration with new witnesses coming forward. for ty, he said right now he just wants to thank god and try his sister's barbecue chicken. hermine strengthened enough this afternoon to go into hurricane category. it does not look like it's strengthening rapidly right now as it heads toward landfall. but some of those outer bands, look at this one coming right into tampa right now.
6:16 pm
we could show you a live shot from tampa. and it is pouring. and it is windy. the camera's shaking, it is so windy. let's go back to that picture, and you can see that as that line goes through, they may get some of the strongest wind gusts of the storm from that. we have a tropical storm watch that's in effect for north carolina all the way up to the delaware and jersey shores. that goes at least through sunday. but probably be extended beyond that, because this storm is not going to be moving very much once it gets off our coast. 75-mile-an-hour winds, moving to the north-northeast at 14 miles an hour. as sheena showed you, we have some buoys with wind gusts at 76 miles an hour already. 80-mile-an-hour storm tonight. 60 miles an hour tomorrow afternoon. as it tracks inland. but some of the circulation's over water, and that prevents is from weakening a little bit.
6:17 pm
tomorrow afternoon 50-mile-an-hour winds. over water, exceptionally warm water, remember, we've had record warm water off atlantic city recently. it may strengthen some more, according to the hurricane center. and this is the slow movement from sunday to monday to tuesday. that means the storm is just spinning out here day after day after day. and that is not good. as we go through hour by hour, saturday morning, we're okay. southern delaware starting to get some of the rain. saturday later in the day, starting to get some rain. it may even start to move out a little bit. but remember, as that thing spins, just like one of those winter storms, it's going to spin some of the moisture right back. now, the farther north and west you are, the better chance you have of a dry day on saturday, dry weather saturday night, and even not that much rain sunday. but look at this area of rain
6:18 pm
coming back sunday afternoon, and then into monday. so the rain in delaware, south jersey, late saturday, the rest of the area, or most of the rest of the area comes in at night. sunday is the worst weather generally. the rain heavy at times, especially from philadelphia eastward toward the shore. and monday, the wind and rain continues at the shore. and that's where the worst is going to be, of course. winds 25 to 40-plus miles an hour, even on monday. lingering 20 to 30 miles an hour. so over the labor day weekend, saturday, some late day rain in philadelphia. no rain p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley. and the jersey shore, delaware get it earlier. sunday, the heaviest rain from philadelphia down through the jersey shore and delaware. lingering rain monday. mostly at the jersey shore. so things are going to vary across the area. that's the wind symbol. and perhaps a little bit of clearing late in the day on
6:19 pm
