this saturday morning. i'm craig melvin alongside sheinelle jones and stephanie ruhle and dylan dreyer. busy morning. >> let's get right to it. the top story as we follow tropical storm hermine's path as it moves up the east coast. bringing rain and heavy winds and storm surge. people waking up to a massive clean up as the storm threatens to ruin labor day weekend. we have full coverage, but let's begin with nbc's kerry sanders in virginia beach. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: it is a morning, but not good morning with winds of 45 miles an hour. 30,000 people in this area have no power. just to the south of here, on hatteras island in north carolina, a possible tornado touchdown. it apparently picked up two mobile homes with residents inside. they have been rushed to the

hospital with injuries. along the atlantic coast this morning. it is all about getting ready. in new jersey and as far as cape cod. >> we're putting extra lines on the boat and stuff like that. some of the guys are moving their boats up to a cove where it is a bit safer. >> reporter: hermine roared ashore in the florida panhandle as a category one hurricane. then lost its 80-mile-an-hour winds as she crossed over land into georgia and the two carolinas. >> whoa, we're going to lose something. >> reporter: along her path, a trail of destruction. more than a quarter million customers lost power, trees came down, streets flooded. a sign of what could come later today. now over the atlantic where waters are 7 degrees warmer than usual. hermine could become a hurricane again. heavy rains, winds, flash flooding and rip currents a threat up the coast as far as

maine. >> storms downgraded. people are saying it is safer to go, but it is still a storm and create tidal surge and rough water in the ocean. >> reporter: for those who endured hermine, a word of warning. don't ignore mother nature. >> my husband came back in the house. i thank god he did not get hit. >> reporter: a tree branch fell on a man in florida and killed him. that is why authorities are suggesting you limit time outside and don't drive. emergency shelters are opened and believe it or not, we will see some people who decided to get out here and go jogging. authorities say this is not a good idea. hopefully they will take care of each other. >> thank you, kerry. be careful. >> hermine expected to keep moving north up the eastern seaboard. beach goers in new jersey are feeling that. dangerous rip currents are

keeping people out of the water. tami leightner has more. >> reporter: good morning, craig. this is a different scene from yesterday morning. yesterday, when tourists and locals were flocking to the beach enjoying miles and miles of sunshine, but there were red flags out yesterday warn of rip tides. they were up the coast from myrtle beach to nantucket. a current will pull a swimmer out making it difficult to escape. difficult, but not impossible. you can escape one if you stay calm and swim parallel with the shore until you are outside of the rip current. as you can imagine, not a lot of people are out to the beach today because of the dangerous conditions. craig. >> tami for us. thank you. >> i was there yesterday with nobody in the water. i want to get a check now. dylan, tell us where is the

storm headed and when will it be over? >> we have been talking about it for 17 days. that is how long the storm has been hanging around. we will talk about it more as it moves over the water and gets stuck. here it is across northeastern north carolina. winds of 60 miles an hour. we still saw the gusty situations out there for kerry sanders. you could see the heaviest rain through virginia beach, but banding up across parts of maryland. that will continue to try to move north. i want to point outgoing through the end of the week through labor day, it is not the rain that is an issue, but the storm is offshore and it could strengthen with winds up to 75 miles per hour. that will push the water onshore and create gusty winds. we have the dip in the jet stream. it will get trapped through here. that is why it will not move. you have the water pushed onshore. we have storm surge in addition

to the astronomical high tide. at times, perhaps as high as 40 to up to 60 miles per hour. not just in the mid-atlantic, but across long island and up into nantucket and south coast of massachusetts. that is how expansive it is. you add 2 to 4 feet in the addition of the astronomical high tide and that could lead to flooding in the atlantic and new england as well. as for rain, we are not looking at a lot of rain except for virginia and north carolina with an additional 4 to 6 inches of rain. you look at new jersey and atlantic city with 2 inches. the farther north you go, more or less clouds and spotty showers. it is really the wind that will cause damage and coastal flooding. >> this is going to be around for a few days. >> up until wednesday and it will finally start to pull away. >> exacerbating back to school blues. now to the race for the

white house. donald trump is in detroit today to reach out to the african-american community. this as he blasts hillary clinton as the fbi released a report finding out she knew very little of how to handle classified e-mails. nbc's jacob rascon is following it from detroit. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. a week after he is blasted for taking his black vote to white audiences, he will visit detroit. hillary clinton is now again under fire for e-mails and some national polls shows donald trump catching up. ♪ donald trump has a lot to prove in detroit. his support among black voters almost nonexistent. his pitch is criticized. >> i have a family. i have a career. what's he talking about? >> reporter: nearly 40% of the

you can see it weakens as it moves away from the island. it is a rough go on the beaches on the north side of the islands. elsewhere across the country, we are looking at the cold front to trigger isolated storms. nothing severe expected. you could see some brief heavy downpours. we have scattered thunderstorms down with the stalled front in florida. like they need more rain. we could deal with today through virginia and up in delaware and maryland, the threat of the gusty winds up to 40 to 60 miles per hour and several inches of rain before it moves to the water and rip current threats good morning. i'm first alert meteorologist krystal klei. we're looking at tropical storm hermine, that system as of this morning 60 mile per hour max winds that we were recording. that system is also moving to the east-northeast, just over 20 miles per hour. so heading our direction with a stall near us likely monday

coast of virginia at this point, the heavier rain. the center still in parts of north carolina. now, what we're looking at is this rain starting to head our direction, in fact, if we zoom in the southern most parts of delaware now seeing light to moderate rain, this is only about 20 miles south of cape may. this morning into this afternoon showers over parts of delaware, the jersey shore are expected. the potential for rain, though, increases as we move sunday and now we will even extend into philadelphia as well, maybe parts of the pennsylvania suburbs. take a look at this possible paths for this system. so through tomorrow still out to the east of us, but then most models putting it curving right near us. that is not good news for us as that means that we will look at those bigger higher wavelengths moving in, the heightened waves lead to that concern for coastal flooding. you can track hermine right through the labor day weekend with the free nbc 10 app. if you download the app you will

krystal. >> looking at radar and satellite you can see that the center of the storm still in north carolina, starting to creep off the shore here and then you have the bulk of the rain that's pushing through parts of virginia and up through maryland into the southern parts of delaware. this is a light to moderate rain, heaviest stuff is mostly off the coastline at this point, but what we are looking at as this system continues to track on to the northeast meaning it will be getting closer to us, that's going to push those bigger waves our way and that means water moving inland, the threat of coastal flooding will continue starting this evening but focus sunday, monday even into your tuesday. here is the labor day weekend forecast for you, temperatures as we move along will be mostly in the 70s across the board, notice if you are in areas like the suburbs, lehigh valley, partly cloudy then cloudy conditions for the next several days, not looking as heavy rain as we expect in south jersey, new jersey and delaware. especially heavy sunday but that will continue into your monday as well.

and we have an update on this breaking news out of atlantic city. a police officer there is out of surgery and in critical condition after being shot early this morning on the job. the police chief of atlantic city tells us that two officers were getting out of their car after stopping three men, at least one of the men opened fire, shooting the officer in the head. those officers returned fire, shooting and killing one suspect. two more suspects are still on the loose and the search is on. we are going to have an update on this story on air during our 9:00 newscast, we will have a live report from the scene and also be posting more information on nbc10.com and on the nbc 10 app. that's it for now, i'm rosemary connors, we will have another update in about 25 minutes. now back to "the today show."

bit. we start with hermine. >> the storm coming on shore overnight in the carolinas and now on the move. nbc's kerry sanders in virginia beach this morning. kerry, how is it now? owe, my goodness. >> reporter: it is stronger by the minute, frankly. the wind was gusting at 40 to 45 miles an hour. now it has picked up. let me make my way over here. about 30,000 customers or so -- there we go. a better spot. who lost their power in the area. the state now, especially in the area, has opened up emergency shelters as folks preparing for a miserable day. this may go a bit longer. let's take a look at what hermine left behind in her wake. in florida, 250,000 people lost power. one man was killed when a tree branch fell on him. injuries up and down the west coast. hermine came ashore as a category one. of course, in north carolina, where it was a tropical storm, it has downed trees and knocked

out power. a lot of attention here today, sheinelle, to the tidal surge that will come. it is expected to be at 11:00 a.m. it won't be much lower than it was during hurricane sandy. they know there will be flooding. >> stay safe. kerry, thank you. >> dylan joins us now on where hermine will head next. >> it will stick around until tuesday night and wednesday. we will not see winds as strong as what kerry is dealing with across the northeast. we will see winds up to 40 to 60 miles per hour. here is the storm about to make its way offshore. it is moving east/northeast at 21 miles per hour with 60-mile-an-hour winds. it will get trapped in the jet stream and go nowhere fast. we have heavy bands of rain. mostly offshore. virginia beach is seeing pockets of heavy rain right now. the storm is forecast to move over the atlantic and look at how slowly it moves.

it could restrengthen into hurricane status by tuesday morning with winds up near 75 miles per hour. we have a dip in the jet stream. that will lock this storm in place and keep it out over the water. all of this water is going to get pushed onshore. that is why there is a threat for coastal flooding because of the storm surge. we are looking at the storm close enough to produce gusty winds from ocean city, maryland to ocean city, new jersey and in nantucket with winds gusting up to 40 to 60 miles per hour as we continue through labor day and through tuesday across long island. again with the water pushing onshore, we could have storm surge up to 2 to 4 feet. you add 2 to 4 feet on top of the astronomical high tide. as for rain, most of the heavy rain will continue near virginia and north carolina. as we go into the rest of the holiday weekend, we are not looking at a lot of rain in new

york city. maybe 1/2 inch. it is the wind and coastal flooding that is the concern. thank you. turning to politics. donald trump will make his first campaign stop at a black church today. the republican presidential nominee is already receiving criticism that the detroit visit will not include addressing the congregation. he will answer pre-submitted questions for the pastor. for hillary clinton, the long holiday weekend is starting with more controversy over her e-mails. the fbi released notes from the interview with clinton in which she said she could not recall being trained to handle classified information. football season is fast approaching and this morning, there is a new headache for the san francisco 49ers. new fallout today from san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick's comments about police and refusal to stand for the national anthem. the union for police officers who work the 49ers home games

is that hermine, the center is trying to move off the shore here and you see that the bulk of the heavier rain is now actually over water, no longer over land. still seeing some rain in areas like norfolk but not looking nearly as heavy as it was, say, a couple hours ago, but also it's starting to track farther north. take a look closer into delaware and we are actually tracking now some pockets of heavier rain in that southern most portion of delaware and rain almost now making it to cape may. this morning we are expecting those light to moderate showers, maybe a few pockets of heavier rain moving through parts of delaware and new jersey, some sprinkles, lighter rain into philadelphia a possibility, although not looking quite as likely as it is in new jersey and in delaware. also remember we are at that moderate to high risk over the next several days straight for dangerous rip currents and rough seas. in fact, we've been saying this, but with the potential for coastal flooding i would not suggest you head to the shore this weekend. now to more breaking news that we're following this

morning. an atlantic city police officer is in critical condition after being shot in the head earlier today. authorities tell us three men opened fire on two officers just outside of the caesars palace parking garage, the officers returned fire and shot and killed one of the suspects. right now police are searching for two other men. we will have an update on the air from the scene here at 9:00 and we will have more information on the nbc 10 app. the gates opened for the made in america festival in just a few today at noon. here is a live look at the stage along the ben franklin parkway in center city, just in front of the philadelphia museum of art. thousands are expected to watch rihanna and coldplay perform today and tomorrow. there are no special plans in place yet for any rain that may come because of hermine, but we will keep you posted. i'm rosemary connors, we will see you at 9:00.

restaurants. this dish we are making at aces. the restaurant i am in every day. it is the crab cakes that i have been making the same for 25 years. many times on this show, actually. it is always a hit. >> a little bit different than regular crab cakes. >> fresh crab meat. simple. crab meat and egg yolk. mayo, mustard. cayanne and bay. there is a lot of filler. there's no filler. >> this is chunky crab meat. >> a warm mound of seasoned crab meat. >> egg. >> mustard and mayo. >> what else can you sub? >> if you don't want crab meat, you can use salmon. flaked salmon. roasted leftover. we mix that up. >> so then, how will this bind together? the egg? >> i'll push it together. >> okay. >> we pop it into the crumbs.
