hermine's impact. we'll get to dylan's forecast in a moment. first, nbc's gabe gutierrez is on the east end of long island. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. hermine is meandering off the east coast and this area is under a tropical storm warning. not expecting rain but strong winds and rip currents keeping people out of the water on this labor day. after slogging through the south and the mid-atlantic, this morning hermine is spinning off the northeast coast kicking up dangerous waves and rip currents. >> the pace of the storm is even slower than they predicted so we can imagine that some of these effects will last now through wednesday. >> reporter: long island under threat of storm surges. this the view from the cruise ship "anthem of the seas." from new jersey to delaware to maryland, the dangerous conditions keeping swimmers out of the water even with sunny skies sunday. >> people really didn't think it was going to be this nice.

it's definitely not a day to go swimming. >> reporter: in ocean city after saturday's washout, the financial hit already stinging on this labor day. ice cream shop owner estimates hermine cost him 80% of his weekend business. >> it's our last chance where we get the crowds before school starts so it's a big deal. you can't fight mother nature. >> reporter: virginia hit hard by weekend flooding and after hermine made landfall in florida friday, authorities there are still surveying the damage as the storm's torrential rain led to swollen rivers and new flooding sunday. hermine's aftermath not over. at least two deaths have been blamed on the storm. one in florida. the other in north carolina over the weekend. again, other communities today are bracing for the possibility of more flooding. willie? >> as we see behind you, no

storm can stop a good fisherman. gabe gutierrez on the east end this morning. dylan is in forral and has more on hermine and what to expect. >> a lot of people in the northeast did see sunshine this weekend. the storm is over the atlantic and it's just a coastal impact from here on out. you can see how far away the storm is. some of these clouds trying to make their way especially into southern new england. the storm itself has winds up near 70 miles per hour. with it sitting here, the moisture is trying to get closer and closer to nantucket and waves themselves are trying to get pushed onshore. that's why we do still have the threat of rip currents and also that storm surge. the storm will most likely go a little farther to the west and then eventually take a turn to the northeast by the time we get into wednesday weakening slightly as it does so. because of the coastal impacts we do still have tropical storm warnings across central and eastern long. the same goes for southern connecticut into rhode island and parts of southeastern massachusetts as well. we do still have the possibility of a storm surge.

about one to two feet above high tide leading to minor coastal flooding. we could see that three-foot storm surge. minor to perhaps moderate coastal flooding and lots of beach erosion which we've seen already. as for winds, most of our windiest conditions will be across eastern long, cape cod and nantucket with gusts up to 35 miles an hour. rain is not really the issue from here on out. we're just looking at perhaps an inch and a half of rain across nantucket because they're closer to the center of the storm. it's really just the water impact. rip currents up and down the east coast still an issue. >> keep an eye on that, dylan. thanks so much. with the election just two months away, labor day marks the start of the final push in the presidential race. nbc's kristen welker is on the campaign trail in cleveland. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. hillary clinton will return to the campaign trail here in

cleveland today after taking several days off for fund-raising. donald trump has no public events scheduled but he's been making a new push for minority voters while questions linger over his immigration policy and whether he supports mass deportations. the race now kicking into high gear. with the national polls tightening, hillary clinton is ramping up looking to solidify her support in battleground ohio today with tim kaine by her sids to other states. there's ongoing fallout after the fbi released notes from their 3 1/2-hour interview with clinton. among the revelations, clinton saying more than three dozen times she couldn't remember something including briefings on how to handle sensitive information and she didn't know the letter c on an e-mail meant confidential. kaine defending her over the weekend. >> what the notes indicate is

why the fbi chose not to go forward with any additional proceeding. >> reporter: all fodder for republicans. >> it's more evidence that hillary clinton is the most dishonest candidate for president of the united states united states since richard nixon. >> as donald trump is making a push to attract african-american voters. >> i'm here today to listen to your message. >> reporter: trump's efforts may be complicated by one of his top surrogates, pastor mark burns, indicating he misrepresented key details about his biography like getting a bachelor's degree from a college he only attended for one semester. meanwhile, trump is facing new criticism over his fiery immigration speech from arizona republican senator jeff flake. >> arizona should still be a red

state but donald trump with the rhetoric he's used and characterizations of many of the state's population have put the state in play. >> reporter: trump firing back at his fellow republican on twitter calling flake very weak and ineffective. clinton tried to capitalize on the interfire tweeting adding there will be no one left in washington for trump to work with who he hasn't insulted. meanwhile, it is a big day in the clinton campaign. today she will start flying in a plane with her press corps. you're taking a live look at that plane right now. about to depart for cleveland a little bit later on today. it does say stronger together on the side. that's of course her campaign slogan. this comes amid criticism she hasn't been assessable enough to the press. all this another indicate we're headed into the homestretch. willie, tamron?

>> kristen welker in cleveland. thank you. john harwood, good to see you. good morning. >> happy labor day. >> we see poll numbers. we see the headlines. what's the state of the race in this homestretch? >> hillary clinton has the advantage. the edge has come off of the post-convention lead she built when she had a strong convention and donald trump was making mistakes. ahead not only nationally and in most of the battleground states so onus is on donald trump to make something happen to change the dynamic and he has two months to do it. >> where are opportunities to change that dynamic if you look at the measures of campaign being outspent on tv ads and doesn't have the ground game in swing states that hillary clinton has, how does he change the dynamic? >> you're right. he doesn't have the ground game. he doesn't have the quality surrogates that hillary clinton has in barack obama, bill clinton, biden, sanders.

the one big opportunity that donald trump has is three presidential debates. those start late this month. donald trump has got to come across in a way that adds to the level of support that he has and stop subtracting and things like the argument with jeff flake that kristen referred to is the kind of thing he needs not to do in order to make progress. >> it's interesting when you look at the month of august for both candidates with hillary clinton, the fbi report, the clinton foundation, with donald trump stumbling over how to reach out to minorities and also his immigration speech, which even his campaign is still split over where he stands on mass deportation, with all of that you keep hearing people say this does boil down to sadly what they see as a lesser of two evils. is that going to be the argument again in this homestretch? i'm better than the other guy or other person i should say. >> we have two unpopular nominees who both have significant problems.

now, donald trump's problems are just bigger than hillary clinton's. that's why she's ahead. and so you see last week the revelation of those fbi interview notes, which returned attention to the questions about her e-mails and did she tell the truth and what couldn't she remember? on the other hand you had a story last week about donald trump paying a fine for an illegal contribution from his foundation misreported to the irs. all of the baggage that hillary clinton is carrying is matched by baggage that donald trump is carrying. >> we're in the homestretch. remember the days when we said there's a lot of time ahead. >> not much left anymore. >> something else to watch in the presidential race this week the first joint candidate event of the general election. matt will sit down with both hillary clinton and donald trump to talk national security and veterans issues during a special commander in chief forum. you can watch it live on

and that's been producing showers and storms especially in and around minneapolis-st. paul. we could possibly see an isolated tornado. we have mountain snow in the forecast especially in the higher elevations back through montana. above 6,500 feet. we're starting to see a change of the season. you go back to the plains and you won't notice it at all. temperatures upper 80s to low 90s. above average. some spotty storms could produce heavier douwnpours. in the northeast we are looking at sunny skies unless you're closer to the coast in massachusetts and rhode island and eastern long island that's where we'll see most of our clouds. perhaps a few spotty showers and then again even if you're at the beaches across the mid-atlantic, keep in mind the water is still very dangerous until hermine pulls away.

the lab in liberia run by the new york blood center, a nonprofit with an annual budget of $300 million. >> some of the sounds was greeting. some is excitement. some is food sounds. yum. that's really good. or that means excitement. >> reporter: jenny desmond and her husband are current caretakers of the crew working on behalf of the humane society of the united states who stepped in when the new york blood center stopped paying what it called its voluntary support for the chimps. >> people volunteer to come here and make donations that's the only way the animals could survive. >> reporter: the humane society from 2015 shows the chimps clinging to care givers for food and drinking water from cups because the water system had broken down. >> when we first came they were really stressed and there was a lot of fighting to get to the food. now they're much more relaxed.

one to three-foot storm surge closer you are to the center of that storm. so that's why the water is more of an issue that rain falling from the sky. let's look at what's going on across the rest of the country. huge ridge in the jet stream allows temperatures to warm up across the eastern half of the country. in the pacific northwest, temperatures are actually running about 10 to 20 degrees below average and even across the higher elevations akcross montana above 6,500 feet some snow. that's how cold that way. anything but cold across indianapolis by wednesday we're topping out around 90 degrees. raleigh lower 90s. new york city will be in the 90s by the time we get to thursday. atlanta stays hot in the 90s and in jacksonville upper 80s and lower 90s. slight risk of stronger storms today through the upper midwest especially minneapolis-st.paul today and again tomorrow. large hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are possible. keep an eye out to the sky out that way and alsohe heavy t

a child to the point of being lethal. we talk about opioid use. when you have medicine that you want to get rid of, put it in something that no one else will want to get to. put it in a plastic baggy and dispose of it in the garbage can. the fda and your local government have give back sites. don't put this in garbage can. >> you are taking away my ramen noodles. >> two main reasons why. one is the actual weigh that this is constructed. it has a very narrow base and it's very, very tall. so it tips easily. just structurally that way. the second thing about the noodles themselves, they are very, very sticky. if a young child comes up to a table, pulls over easily,

noodles will get stuck on them and can cause severe enough burns that the child requires surgery. so it's not that you have to get rid of the soup but perhaps manufacturing look for something with a wider base or more importantly keep it out of reach of children. >> keep them in college dorm rooms which is where we need them. >> so one big important thing for viewers, this has nothing to do with the brand of high chair. all high chairs are a culprit here. the main issue is this. you want to -- you have your baby starting to eat table food. you want your child to feel like they're part of the family so you push the high chair up close to the table. what the little baby can do is use his or her legs and push off against the edge of the table and falls back. apparently you would not imagine how many emergency visits come from children under the age of one who hit their head and get a concussion. number one, have them further away so their legs can't reach. use the kind that you can strap

onto the table. we always had that. and most importantly, children can crawl out so make sure your child is strapped in correctly. >> pull it back so they can't reach. >> i don't have one of these in my house. i'm glad now. one of the most hazardous things you can have in the kitchen. look how sharp this blade is. cuts and makes a beautiful julianne vegetables. it comes with a safety guard. put your food in that and use it. second thing is cleaning it. food can get stuck. it dulls the blade. food can harbor bacteria. one of the biggest reasons people come into the emergency room for lacerations and cuts on their hands. >> button batteries. i get this one. >> kids love to put things in their mouth. who wouldn't if you're a toddler and want to put a button battery

in your mouth. it's very bright. it looks exactly like maybe a piece of candy. what makes this different, let's say a child swallows a coin like a penny. it's likely going to go down and they'll pass it and they should be okay. what happens with these is that the acid from the batteries can erode through a child's esophagus in as little as two hours. this is a real medical emergency. look at all of the things where you find button batteries. again, please keep these things out of reach of children and especially the battery supply way up high. >> one more wave seen a lot in the news lately. detergent pods. >> over and over again. what most people will say is regular detergent is so diluted with water is not dangerous and a little kid can't get detergent in their mouths. look at the color. a child will go for this. extremely toxic because it's so concentrated. children obviously can have gi problems and have abrasions or

are in season, we are using them every way possible. i've got to tell you, this is my favorite recipe. >> i never had tomato pie. >> honey, you're life will be changed after this segment. we'll start with homemade crust. it's five ingredients. >> when you tell me homemade crust, it doesn't sound fast. >> it's scary but the deal is you can't get out of the parking lot at the supermarket to get your premade pie crust in the time that it's going take to you make this. so what we're going to do, one of the things we always want to make sure is we're going to mix butter and flour in here together really well. now, because you're so hot because you know you are, you don't want to overmix that butter in because you'll lose your pretty layers so you literally stick your fingers in the ice water for a few minutes. get them really cold and then work it in so that it doesn't overwork it. >> do you use room temperature butter? >> as cold as possible.

you want your hands to be cold because i don't want them to melt it. >> i'll do that a little bit. >> this is great trick. once you have your dough all rolled out and absolutely beautiful, it's give to move interest from here to here. we're going to roll it onto the rolling pin. look at there. then we'll roll it back out. >> that's beautiful. so we'll press it down just a little bit. it's bigger than our pan which is not a big deal. >> is that what you want? >> we'll cut it off. we'll come around and cut. you could tear it. not a big deal. this is crimping. this is not one of my favorite things is crimping the crust. it's a simple technique. work on that. this is going to be your big fun thing for the whole day. >> this is where a child in the house comes in handy. >> here to there.

see the space. you practice at home. >> now we have our mixture. this is going to make the toppings for this fantastic tomato pie. we have mayonnaise. parmesan. and we have sharp cheddar. you could use mozzarella. any cheese you like. we'll mix this really well. that will be the topping. now, with our tomatoes, the one thing we always want to remember is they're going to release a lot of moisture. we want to drain them. because otherwise we're not going to have tomato pie, we'll have tomato soup and that's not what we want. we'll add our salt. and let that start to drain at the bottom. that will make the difference in the world. >> you drained your tomatoes. >> now we have our gorgeous tomatoes and we'll start layering. i love using all of these different colors. that just makes it so much more fun. >> beautiful when you slice in.

>> start crumbling the goat cheese in the middle. if you don't like it, you don't have to use it. you can you the zucchini in here. eggplant in here. or if you want to do more mozzarella. we have to have some of this fabulous basil. >> i'm making a mess. >> you're doing really well. >> we're going to add more pepper. and then we'll add more salt. and then we keep layering. and then we do a beautiful big thick topping. you can see it right here after it's been cooked of that wonderful creamy sauce. >> can i try? >> absolutely. this is the mile high pie made famous in new orleans by one of my favorite hotels in the world which just reopened. they just remodeled and made it absolutely incredible. and so this is an ice cream pie. it's any kind of ice cream that you love. they do peppermint and tons of
