5:00. keith jones, nbc 10 news. our coverage of today's hearing for bill cosby continues on nbc 10 news at 5:00. our legal analysts join us for insight on what was involved in court today, ahead at 5:00. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> a live look at the scene in cape may. the surf is still up as a result of hermine 689 the shore is going to be a popular place this weekend with the temperatures getting ready to rise. the labor day weekend may have come and gone as we know, but summer's not going anywhere. get ready for the return of the heat. >> sheena parveen joining us now. what, a little september sizzle, sheena? >> more 90s coming back into the forecast. we'll see several days of this. but first, hermine has to move away. right now it is moving a little bit closer to show, where you see more cloud cover at the beaches, more rain trying to move into ocean county. once hermine moves farther out

to sea, that's when we'll see things heat up. this is margate showing you a view of the shore right now. we still have a rip current threat and the skies are getting a little darker with rain off in the distance. that is one thing we're continuing to watch for the rest of the day, high risk of rip currents through this evening because of hermine just sitting off the coastline. the winds are still a little breezy because of this. mostly the north wind direction, in philadelphia and wilmington, 17-mile-an-hour winds in atlantic city. breezy for the rest of this evening. our temperatures today, though, 86 degrees right now in philadelphia. new jersey coming in mostly mid to low 80s. lehigh valley about the mid-80s. things are heating up. if you look at the seven-day scrolling right at the bottom of your screen, you'll see we have a stretch of 90s in the forecast. another heat wave.

so summer is not officially over yet. we'll take a closer look at the heat wave coming and whether that will last into your weekend, straight ahead. new video of the two men accused of shooting and wounding an atlantic city police officer. they were greeted by several dozen angry officers in court today. cydney long was in the courtroom. >> the two suspects had some company today. >> reporter: indeed they did. they had the eyes and stares of as many as 75 to 100 law enforcement officers to the point the court had to turn some away. the wife who is expecting their third child is at the hospital. here in the courtroom it was the men and women in blue that picked up this task. for the first time since they allegedly fired multiple rounds on two police officers, demetrius cross and chisholm

answered to attempted murder charges before a judge. and before a courtroom jam packed with dozens of law enforcement officers from 14 south jersey departments. cross cried in court. it was an armed robbery, police say, that led to a shootout by the seeds ar's casino parking garage between cross, chisholm and police. damon collapsed and died and returned fire by police. >> i'm more concerned with the family of our officer. >> reporter: matt rogers is overwhelmed by the officer and his family. he's thankful for the officers who came today to see the defendants face to face. not everyone got to see them in court as the number swelled to nearly 100 men and women in blue. >> easily, and i know wanted to be here. like i said, on short notice, it's an unbelievable feeling. it's making this manageable for our guys. i get goose bumps when i pulled in and saw all the cars, the different uniforms.

>> reporter: both attended murder dethsd say they plan to hire an attorney. one of them in tears as you'll see coming up at 5:00. their bail remains the same as it was set saturday at $750,000, full cash. live in mays landing, cydney long, nbc news. an off-duty cop shot his son, and our cameras were outside after the shooting. police want to know if it was an accident or intentional. they'll look for answers from two others who were in the house at the time. >> i believe the son's girlfriend and a younger son, and so we're trying to get as much information as we can from them. >> the officer is not charged at this point. he's already off the street because of a job related injury. a big step forward this week for delaware county police officer christopher dorman, the officer will be back in uniform

this friday. it's been more than two months since norman was shot seven times as he responded to a call. the shooting suspect has been charged with attempted murder. jury selection began in the trial who will determine who should compensate victims of the 2013 market street building collapse. the defendants in the collapse include the owner's building, the salvation army and the contractor. jury selection could take several weeks. new video of an unholy act. philadelphia police are searching for a man who stole a menorah from a synagogue in the city's somerton section. the man was walking with a group last month, took off and grabbed the menorah from congregation beth solomon synagogue. then he ran back to the group. if you recognize this suspect, call police. if today's any indication, regional rail passengers may have to get used to waiting a

little longer during their morning commute. septa has been dealing with a slowdown since before july 4th. they warned things could get a little worse because people were returning to school and work after summer vacation. we found delays of about a half hour at some stations this morning. septa is adding a supplemental bus service and changed its regional rail schedule to help move people along faster. >> i thought the train was coming at 11:15. it got here at 11:50. >> i hope they put cars on the line and be more accurate with their times. >> they returned at least four cars to service, but not expected to get back to a regular schedule until next month. 9 alarm rang early for a lot of kids in the area reminding them that summer break is over. moms and dads walked their kids to school in camden county's audubon school district. students there get out of early today.

but it is back to a school day tomorrow. students in philadelphia are enjoying their last few hours of summer vacation. it's back to school tomorrow for public schools in the city. tim furlong joins us live. >> school officials expecting big things this year. >> reporter: certainly expecting a better start than last year. there are still plenty of issues, old buildings, graduation rates climbing. but there's a lot of positive stuff to talk about as the kids come back to school. the welcome back board is almost ready at nebinger elementary school in south philly. in mrs. connelly's third grade classroom, it's like christmas morning for this enthusiastic teacher. the write books campaign delivered 130,000 books to 650 classrooms in 53 city schools. >> first and foremost, money is the difference. >> reporter: the district superintendent said this is a way better start to the school year than the district had last year. you remember the months-long

budget problems last year. >> it's nice not having to send individuals a letter saying we may not be able to pay you next month. >> reporter: no new layoffs, cuts or reductions, the district will once again have counselors and nurses in each school which means teachers can spend more time on the actual teaching. >> so many burdens have been lifted. now i can just focus on teaching reading to students. >> reporter: mom has confidence in her city schools. >> my daughter went there. she loved it. she's ready for school. he'll do great. >> reporter: the district and teachers still haven't worked out a contract, but even for the kids at the catholic schools, because the budget is in place this year, means at least the kids in pennsylvania will get their textbooks. after last year, that's a win.

tim furlong, nbc 10 news. dozens of homeless families gathered to get the back-to-school supplies their kids need. there were backpacks and notebooks for the taking. it is a traditional housing program for homeless families. recipients of the dream dot u.s. scholarship, offering scholarships to immigrant youth. the scholarship provides the students an opportunity to achieve their dreams. closing campuses in one of the largest nationwide school shutdowns in the history. accounting practices at the school, this is video of the plymouth meeting location, one of seven campuses in

pennsylvania. last week the education department banned the for-profit college from enrolling new students who used federal financial aid. more changes are coming to the office of pennsylvania's attorney general. friday will mark bruce castor's last day as solicitor general. he was once kathleen kane's number two. he briefly ran the attorney general office after kane resigned. bruce beemer was nominated to step in to take over her tesm. kane was convicted of leaking secret grand jury information and lying under oath. decision 2016, now as the new presidential poll puts hillary clinton in the lead. the survey monkey nbc national poll has democrat hillary clinton winning 48% of the vote. her rival republican donald trump there at 42%. trump campaigned today in virginia weech with his dear, evanka, earlier in the day. trump admitted that the

president of mexico did tell the truth when the pair did speak about a wall between the two countries. but nieto broke the ground rules before the meeting. trump will be in philly tomorrow for an event at the union league. meantime, hillary clinton stumping for support in the battleground state of florida today. she told the crowd that trump doesn't have the temperament to serve as commander in chief. clinton's daughter chelsea campaigns for her mother right here in pennsylvania. she'll make stops in carlisle and state college before heading to scranton on thursday. and president obama hits town next tuesday to shore up support for clinton. the time and location hasn't been announced. stay with nbc 10 for details on that. clinton will get help looking for votes from the first lady, in yet another hotly contested state. michelle obama will speak with clinton supporters next week in northern virginia. you can hear what both hillary clinton and donald trump have to say during a presidential forum

on national security military affairs and veterans officials. the forum is tomorrow night. randy gyllenhaal will be there live to bring you exclusive coverage. watch the forum right here on nbc 10 starting at 8:00 p.m. historic moment overseas today when president obama visited the country of laos. president obama became the first american president to officially visit the country. he's in laos for an east asian summit. the president announced the u.s. would spend $90 million to clear unexploded bombs dropped by americans during the vietnam war. >> whatever the cause, whatever our intentions, war inflicts a terrible toll. >> the president abruptly canceled a planned meeting with the president of the philippines after he made a vulgar comment to president obama killing of drug lords in the philippines.

the black lives matter group wanted to bring attention to britain's environmental impact on the lives of blacks around the world. flights are now back to normal. not the vacation tourists were hoping for in mexico. they had to take shelter in their hotel rooms this morning, when hurricane newton slammed into loss cabos. it packed winds of 90 miles an hour, knocked down trees and took out power in the resort town. hurricane newton is now moving and in florida, residents there evacuated during hurricane hermine. rivers crested to more than 25 feet sending water rushing into low-lying neighborhoods. some hoping to return home had to go by boat, or wade right through the flooding. so we're glad we sort of dodged that massive amount of flooding in our area. >> we are. let's turn it over to sheena parveen with more. >> warming temperatures now.

as 90s will come back. so far the weekend is looking pretty good. philadelphia 86 degrees right now. pennsylvania suburbs, south jersey, delaware, one spot temperatures have gotten to 90 degrees. along the shore, 80s. offshore wind is helping to heat things up. upper township, cape may county, 85 degrees. 85 cape may courthouse. 87 now in stone harbor. a little farther to the north where we have thicker clouds rolling in from hermine, somers point coming in at 82 degrees. mays landing, warmer, too. as we go through the rest of today, dangerous rip currents stay at the shore because of hermine. we'll keep the high risk around through this evening with some of those rougher seas, especially farther offshore.

the heat for us is going to return in the form of 90s for several days. and even feeling closer to 100 degrees, mostly thursday, friday, and possibly on saturday. we have a stretch of some summer-like weather coming back into the forecast. philadelphia, 90 degrees. thursday 95 degrees. friday temperatures in the mid-90s. with the humidity, again feeling like triple digits, tomorrow in the pennsylvania suburbs, near 90 degrees. 93 thursday. 92 friday. if you're in the lehigh valley, 88 tomorrow. thursday and friday you'll be in about the mid to low 90s. in new jersey and delaware, you'll be closer to 90 tomorrow. thursday and friday will be coming in with temperatures in the mid to low 90s. near the shore we could be near 90 degrees on thursday. friday 87 mostly sunny. as of now it is definitely going to be feeling like summer leading into this coming weekend. so hopefully you can enjoy the shore or wherever you're going this weekend. we'll be a little bit cooler by sunday. so we're going to have a bit of

a cooldown from saturday to sunday. we'll be dropping back into the 80s, hot and humid for the rest of the week. look at hermine, offshore rain mostly. closer to ocean county, though. some of the lighter rain bands are trying to move onshore. you see the cloud cover getting closer to a lot of our shore communities, especially atlantic city, starting to see some of that light rain. we'll be watching this heavier band of rain. i think most of that will be staying offshore. areas farther inland we expect to say dry. hermine trying to throw some of the rain bands into maybe ocean county by tonight. and then tomorrow it moves offshore again and we'll be watching for another area of rain just to our west by late in the night tomorrow. 9:30, showers and storms west of the area mostly. and then we expect a lot of those to kind of die out by thursday afternoon, sunny again. mostly dry across the area. that's going to lead into friday. we do have a drier stretch with

some hotter temperatures. and with the south wind, that's where we're going to pick up the humidity to feel like triple digits. as we go into tomorrow, around 90. the temperatures keep going up to the mid-90s. it's really going to feel like the sticky summer pattern once again. normal high, 81 degrees. so we're going to be well above normal for this time of the year. about ten degrees or more above normal. now, as we go into the next several days, aside from the 90s in the forecast, i mentioned we'll have a little bit of a cooldown as we go into sunday. so temperatures will be right back in about the mid-80s. coming up we'll take a closer look at your neighborhood forecast and that heat wave we expect. new jersey man accused of shooting a man at l.a.x. airport is pleading guilty to murder charges today to avoid the death penalty. he's expected in u.s. district court in los angeles in about an hour. three years ago, the pennsville

native pulled a semiautomatic rifle from a duffel bag and opened fire at l.a.x. he killed a tsa officer and shot two more acts, and another person before authorities shot him. he was carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and a handwritten note that said he wanted to kill tsa agents. recapping our breaking news. in the past hour, a montgomery county judge set a trial date of june 5th of next year for bill cosby. cosby and his lawyers appeared in court today. they plan to show evidence that cosby sexually assaulted 13 women. they say they have witnesses who haven't been named yet, and they say they are ready for trial. cosby's defense team said cosby is blind and may need special accommodations during his trial. stay with nbc 10 for more on the breaking story. at 4:30, we'll hear from prosecutors, and coming up at 5:00, we'll get a live report from the courthouse. in the meantime, one car, one match, and one major

the intent was revenge but it didn't quite go as planned. check out this video of a woman trying to set her ex-boyfriend's car on fire.fa turns out, this wasn't even her ex's car. she was later arrested and charged with second-degree arson. here is a suspect stealing a car with two 1-year-olds inside, at an atlanta gas station just as the father walked back to the car after leaving the vehicle running while paying inside. police found the car nearby. the kids are okay. but one child was discovered outside the vehicle in her car seat. connecticut day care shut down after 600 marijuana plants were found in the backyard. they were tipped off by state child care detectives. investigators found pot plants as tall as 6 to 10 feet high. the day care's license has been

we're following breaking news in montgomery county. within the past hour, a judge set a date for bill cosby's sex assault trial. this is cosby walking out of the montgomery county courthouse this afternoon. >> prosecutors spoke as they walked out of the courtroom a few minutes before 4:00. they told the court they plan to show evidence that bill cosby sexually assaulted 13 women. cosby walked into court holding the arm of one of his aides. the prosecutor said they have witnesses who haven't been named yet. >> this case is continuing to be investigated. we've spent a lot of time talking to a lot of people all over the country, and outside of the country. >> today cosby's defense team

outside. it's all because of hermine has gotten a little closer to our coastline. it will move back out to sea, but it is bringing more clouds to the shore. and maybe a late shower this evening. take a look, though, we're talking about the heat now as we go through the rest of this week. now we're looking at tomorrow afternoon. our future feels-like temperature puts us around 90 degrees. we're expecting a high of 90. so humidity won't be outrageous. it will still feel like the actual temperature. then we go into thursday. it's going to be a lot more humid and hotter. now look at what happens thursday afternoon. we could be feeling like 103 degrees in philadelphia. we could be feeling like 104 in swedesboro. westchester could be feeling like 101. so yes, we expect the hundred-degree feels-like temperatures to come back. and we expect it to be lasting into your weekend. coming up, i'll show you that forecast and some record highs we could see also, that's straight ahead.

convicted sex offender brock turner registered as a sex oh funder today in ohio, under the terms of his probation. turner has to register with the ser rif's office every three months. he was released from a california jail last week after serving three months for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman after a party. a robbery suspect threatened a store clerk with some type of accelerant at sonny's cigarettes last tuesday. the male suspect sprayed the clerk with a yellow liquid and pulled out a lighter. the suspect made off with some cash. he was last seen near frankfurt. antibiotics are often the go-to treatment for infections with infants. >> what new research reveals and what it could mean for your kids later in life. status update. the new facebook feature designed to make sure you don't miss the important stuff. those stories and more ahead on nbc 10 news at 4:00.

chef i chase has checked into rehab. he checked into a facility in minnesota for a tune-up in his recovery. chase has struggled with substance abuse during his career. back in the '80s, he checked into the betty ford clinic for an addiction to painkillers. the 72-year-old known for his roles in the "vacation" movies, "caddyshack" and of course "saturday night live." the link between antibiotics early in life and allergies. a british study found that taking just one course of antibiotics before the age of 2

here's a live look out at rehoboth beach in delaware. everyone really felt the wind today. hermine got a little bit closer, gave us windy conditions. other than that, we're going to keep heating up from here forward. tomorrow we'll see temperatures closer to 90 degrees for a lot of the area. a live look at center city in philadelphia. the clouds are with us. it's 86 degrees in philadelphia. but we're dry. north wind by 6:00 p.m. around 15 miles an hour. 9:00 p.m. around 80 degrees. pretty comfortable. but it's still going to be fairly warm by 9:00 p.m. a lot hotter through parts of the area by the end of this week, especially. temperatures right now through delaware, coming in around 90 degrees. if you are along the shore, temperatures there in the low 80s right now. we'll look at our pennsylvania suburb neighborhoods. chester county, coming in at 85 degrees. in unionville, exton 88 degrees. some warm spots on the map here. mal vern 86.

montgomery county in the mid-80s. bucks county mostly the mid to low 80s. there's hermine, it's out in the atlantic. so just off our coastline. and that's really what's been responsible for the breezy conditions. today it's a little bit closer to us now. atlantic city seeing 17-mile-an-hour winds. now, here is our satellite radar. you see the rain. it's closer to us. only about 100 miles offshore where the center is. that's where the heaviest rain is. a little closer to home, in parts of atlantic county, clouds increasing, a little bit of light rain through ocean county, trying to move south. this is fairly light rain. the heaviest is still offshore. cape may county staying dry right now. as we go through tonight, we could still see some showers at the shore from hermine, just being close enough to give us those. by 10:00 p.m. tonight, you see some of the rain trying to make it onshore. just along the coastal areas.

by wednesday we'll be dry through most of the day. later wednesday night, 10:00 p.m., showers and storms just off to our west, trying to move in. but a lot of models, they approach the area, and then they quickly dive to the south. most of us staying dry. by thursday afternoon, we're sunny, but also holt and humid. so the humidity is going to increase a lot thursday and also friday. and we're going to stay dry going into the weekend. so we could be breaking some record high temperatures as we go into thursday. this will be part of our heat wave. that's going to be developing starting tomorrow. philadelphia could see a record high. the record is 96. rehoboth 95 for the forecast. close to a record. coatesville, mount holly, newark, just to name a few, could be seeing record high temperatures as we go into thursday. the normal high this time of the year, that's actually 81 degrees. so take a look at what's going to happen. today so far we've got p into the upper 80s, normal high 81. wednesday we're going to be around 90 degrees, almost ten
