summer still has a strong hold on us. dangerous heat and humidity grips our region. just how hot it will feel outside today. a penny for your thoughts. we bet drivers in delaware have plenty of negative ones this morning after an unusual spill snarled their commute. tebowing on the baseball field. the team that just gave this nfl quarterback a shot at professional baseball. right now at 11:00, football season kicks off tonight and fall is exactly two weeks away, but this sultry summer weather refuses to let go. here's a live look outside at boathouse row in philadelphia where temperatures are soaring right now. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley is here with a

forecast. hi, bill. >> hi, vai. we're seeing lots of sunny, hazy sunny and feeling the humidity. that started out higher, and now the temperatures already in the middle 80s in philadelphia. the normal high temperature is 81 degrees. we're already passed that and on our way to the 90s this afternoon. hazy sunshine over the city. 85 now. 91 at 1:00 this afternoon and 93 at 4:00 this afternoon. seeing bright sunshine in the lehigh valley. 81 degrees to start with. look at that, 2:00, near 90 degrees and up to 90 degrees at 5:00. and in mean these hours, i expect it to go higher. and through the day, the humidity will be higher. so, we're looking at 95 degrees this afternoon. so another 10 degrees hotter in philadelphia this afternoon. low 90s for new jersey, the suburbs, the lehigh valley in delaware, but the humidity will not be low. the humidity will be high at the shore, too, 86 degrees, but it's going to feel like it's in the 90s. we have seen a change in the last 24 hours, the wind has

shifted. hermine for days was offsthohor giving us that nice northerly wind, but with a westerly or southwesterly wind today, the humidity is bumping into the area. look at what that does to the feels-like temperatures. we're in the upper 80s by noontime, heading into the 90s. we'll warm to 93 degrees at 4:00, but with a high humidity for much of the afternoon, it's going to feel like 102 degrees. and this is not the end of it. looks like it's going to be steamy right on into the weekend. i'll have a look at the extended heat wave forecast when i come back in just a few minutes. vai? >> see you then, bill. with the heat predicted today, reading school district is dismissing its middle school students early. the schools will close at 12:15 today, just pass an hour from now because they don't have build-wide air-conditioning systems. all of the reading district schools will operate on a regular schedule. and trenton schools are also shorting their days for the rest of the week. trenton district has 22 schools total, but not all have central

air-conditioning. working parents are balancing the last-minute change the best they can. >> supposed to be a bit hotter and, i can understand that, but i thought they had air-conditioning, like, what's the problem? >> frankly, interrupts our schedule, big-time. because i'm a barber. and i do everything by appointments. >> reporter: parent also said the district's after-school programs don't kick in until mid-september, so that makes the situation even more difficult. and crews are making progress cleaning up an accident on i-95 in newcastle. this tractor-trailer overturned early this morning and spilled unstamped pennies all over the highway. the driver suffered only minor injuries. let's get an update from nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter, francesca ruscio. what are you seeing out there? >> good morning, vai. we have been watching this accident all morning long. but we do have some good news, the left lane has reopened, but

the right lanes remain closed from 95 to 295. you can get by, but use caution. take a look at this. we're looking at another accident that has taken place on the walt whitman bridge, on the right-bound lane through the toll bridge plaza. we're looking at lane restrictions at this time. out by whitemarsh, another accident at the intersection of chestnut streak and ridge pike. and travel times are in the green right now. a live shot of 476 at the boulevard, in the green, smoothly both directions. that is good news right there. limerick, take a look at this, another accident along route 422 and country club road. expect some stop-and-the go traffic in that area as well. mass transit, we're seeing some delays along the trenton line and the thorn dale line running in the red as well as in the yellow. vai, back to you. >> francesco ruscio, thank you. happening now, more than 200 prospective jurors are gathering for the bridgegate scandal.

two allies of chris christie are facing wire fraud and civil rights charges. bill brony and bridget kelly are accused of closing lanes in the george washington bridge as a form of political revenge. potential jurors will fill out a questionnaire and return next week to answer questions from the attorneys. and philadelphia police have a man in custody suspected of two separate crimes. one is a home invasion and robber. the other, a purse snatching on the street right afterward. a man in the home said he heard someone forcing open the front door. he went to check it out and ended up struggling with the armed intruder. the intruder fired a shot into the floor and hit the man on the head with the gun. police say the robber took a laptop and prescription medication and ran off. officers late spotted him, chased him and arrested him. and police say the man attacked in the home invasion and his wife and a woman robbed of her purse minutes later all identified the suspect. officers recovered items stole orphan both scenes.

and fire officials in morristown burlington county are looking for the cause of this fire that swept through a home on cox road. crews got the call just after 11:15 last night. the fire started in the garage and spread to the house and the attic. despite heavy damage, no one was hurt. no one was home at the time. and police hope new video can help them catch a thief who threatened a store worker. surveillance cameras at the riteaid on east allegheny avenue in kensington captured the entire thing. investigators say the man was trying to walk out of the store with more than $150 worth of tooth paste without paying for it. when an employee confronted him at the exit, the suspect pulled a box cutter on him and took off. and from our lehigh valley bureau, workers went on strike at the plant that makes marshmallow peeps. union members voted last week to strike after unanimously

rejecting the company's most recent contract offer. the plan also makes mike and ike and hot tamales candies. the company has released a statement saying it is committed to reaching an agreement with the union. up next, making their case. donald trump and hillary clinton both try to prove they have what it takes to be the next commander in chief during an exclusive nbc news forum. plus the comments clinton made about trump's candidacy. >> what you would you do if you were elected about aleppo? >> about aleppo. and what is aleppo? >> plus, do you know what aleppo is? apparently, not everyone running for candidate does. >> i know what heat and humidity is. we're feeling it today and the temperatures already climbing. look at dover, wilmington coastal up by 5 and still climbing. a look at the extended forecast and show you when this heat wave

in decision 2016, hillary clinton and donald trump campaigned in two important swing states today after battling it out last night. nbc national correspondent tracie potts is in washington this morning with more on campaign's stops and last night's commander chief forum. >> reporter: hillary clinton rallies in charlotte today after answering tough questions from a military audience about

e-mailing classified information. >> i communicated about classified material on a wholly separate system. i took it very seriously. >> reporter: she drew the line on ground troops to fight isis. >> we are not putting ground troops into iraq ever again and we're not putting ground troops into syria. >> reporter: and she insisted that donald trump also supported the iraq war. >> i have taken responsibility for my decision. he refuses to take responsibility for his support. >> i was totally against the war in iraq. >> reporter: trump heads to ohio today after being challenged repeatedly by the audience to explain his policy. he said, immigrants who are not citizens should be allowed to serve in the military. >> it would be a very special circumstance, yes. >> reporter: he defended praising russia's leader. >> if he says great things about me, i'm going to say great things about him. >> reporter: and he criticized our military leaders. >> the generals have been reduced to rubble.

they have been reduced to a point where it's embarrassing for our country. >> reporter: trump and clinton clashed over v.a. reform. >> i will not let the v.a. be privatized. >> i never said take the v.a., take it the veterans administration private. i wouldn't do that. >> reporter: setting the stage for their first debate later this month. and just before the forum, democrats released e-mails, exchanged between hillary clinton and her predecessor, former secretary of state, colin powell. they described it as a republican playbook on how to use personal e-mail and get around government rules. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. meanwhile, libertarian presidential candidate gary johnson is making headlines this morning after showing an apparent lack of knowledge about foreign events. he was on msnbc's "morning joe" when he was asked about his syria policy. >> what would you do if you were elected about aleppo. >> about aleppo? and what is aleppo? >> you're kidding? >> no. >> aleppo is in syria.

it's the epicenter of the refugee crisis. >> okay, got it. got it. >> well, johnson went on to say he thought the syria situation is, quote, a mess, and that the u.s. needs to join hands with russia to diplomatical lally br an end to the crisis. and that international battle for the red cross described it as one of the most devastating con flick in modern times. a u.n. agency warned at least 250,000 civilians have been trapped in the rebel-held eastern part of aleppo since early july. just yesterday, syrian activists say at least ten civilians, including a child, were killed in an air strike in aleppo. an austrian prosecutors have charged two men with being part of a terrorist organization in connection the investigations into last november's paris attacks that killed 130 people. the lone surviving suspect in that attack went before a judge

this morning. salah abdeslam arrived under heavy security at the main courthouse in the french capital for a scheduled hearing. he has been held at a french prison since he was extradited to france back in april. the belgium-born 26-year-old refused to talk at a previous hearing in protest over 24-hour video surveillance of his prison cell. and new this morning, a flag that flew over ground zero right after the 9/11 attacks is back in lower manhattan this morning. a photo of three firefighters raising the flag over the rubble of the world trade center became iconic. the flag itself was lost until 2014, when a man came forward saying it was given to him as a gift to honor his service in iraq. the 9/11 museum in manhattan unveiled a permanent exhibit this morning, featuring that flag. and president obama will speak sunday at the pentagon to mark the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. 184 people died when a hijacked american airlines jet hit the

building. nearly 3,000 others died aboard hiked planes that crashed in new york and here in pennsylvania. and the president, meanwhile, is continuing his visit to laos, where he is taking part in a summit. this morning, he held talks with prime minister modi. this was the eighth one-on-one meeting between these two leaders in two years and probe the last before obama leaves office in january. the national constitution center begins its fall town hall season tonight with a discussion about 9/11. tonight, alberto gonzalez will talk about the decisions made during 9/11. he was council to president george w. bush and served as attorney general and many of his stories were told in his new book, true faith and allegiance, a story of service, sacrifice, war, and peace. the national constitution center says his insights will be important for the whole family to hear. >> designed to try to provide

historical ton text for yuck people or even for the rest of us, who in the passage of time, 15 years, i think, can sometimes forget just the vividness of that moment. the town hall begins tonight at 6:30. police are looking for a man who shot a man who was watering his lawn. riders on bike rode up to the 71-year-old victim and demanded his wallet. when he fought back, they shot him in the stomach. one resident compared the crime-ridden neighborhood to a battlefield. >> 20 years in the military and more people is getting in the city of chicago than they do in a combat zone. >> police have not made any arrests. the victim is in fair condition at a chicago hospital. and the first nasa rocket that will collect samples from a thatasteroid will launch into s today. the spacecraft should reach the asteroid in 2018 and return to earth five years later. they hope the asteroid can

include clues to the origin of the solar system since it contains organisms formed in the same time period. no shortage of solar radiation today. plenty of sunshine, though it is hazy outside. we're experiencing a quick warm-up with that hazy sunshine. and the humidity, it's a steamy one, making for the hottest day of the week. even though today will be the hottest, the heat wave continues right on into the weekend. and the humidity will be evaluated. look at this, 80s all around. 85 degrees in philadelphia. and a couple spots are running a little bit warmer. graduate hospital tends to run warm. it's at 91 degrees. fox chase, 85, 86, and parkside, while andorra is 85 degrees to start with. plenty of sunshine in the east and in the lehigh valley, temperatures there are running warm, too, and it will run into the 90s. not quite as warm as in the 90s. walnut port, 79. 80 degrees currently in nazareth and bethlehem is already up to

83 degrees. and for rehoboth beach, a little bit of a crowd there looking for some some relief. sunshine, a few scattered clouds, and a slight chance of a shower. we saw showers move through first thing this morning in delaware, but i expect delaware to stay dry this afternoon. already up to 89 in marshalton, reedy point has warmed to 82 degrees. not all that hot just yet, but it will be warming into the low 90s for rehoboth and lewis this afternoon. and with that heat comes the humidity today. the heat index projection, the feels-like temperatures this afternoon, 100 for wilmington, swedesboro, 99 degrees for philadelphia and vorhees. look at the 90s in doylestown and pottstown. that's today. cools down some tonight, but still steamy tomorrow. tomorrow afternoon and into the early evening hours, 100 degrees for philadelphia, burlington, vorhees, swedesboro, wilmington. let's go into saturday now. saturday morning, it cools down,

right back up in the upper 90s to 100 degrees for high humidity again on saturday. then, we'll start to get some improvement for the second half of the weekend. but for today, tomorrow, saturday, steam heat, we've got a heat wave. there'll be four days in a row of 90-plus temperatures for philadelphia. then numbers start coming down on sunday. and the wind will shift once again, a breezy day and much less humid conditions come in for sunday. a beautiful day on sunday and a gorgeous day on monday. if you can't take the 90s, maybe the shore's the place to be, because 80s for today, tomorrow, and saturday. we'll get those clouds blowing through at the shore. you'll see that nice, lower humidity for sunday and you'll really experience it monday. i'll show you when fall weather will finally arrive, or at least fall-feeling weather with the ten-day on 10 coming up in the next half hour. vai? >> bill, can't wait for that fall weather. still ahead, a sneak peek at the new apple iphone 7 and at new device could be a headphone

we're watching another accident in new castle county. sky force 10 is live over the scene along i-95 southbound. this is at south chapel road. this is where a tractor-trailer has overturned. a man was involved in this crash. we're told three southbound lanes of 95 in this area are closed. remember the overturned tractor-trailer this morning with the pennies. that was in the northbound lanes, and this is the southbound lanes. we're working to find out if anyone was hurt. of course, stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app for updates on this breaking news. and a new study reveals just how much time the average american spends behind the wheel. according to the aaa foundation for traffic safety, the average american spends more than 290 hours on the road each year. that's equal to more than 12 whole days or more than seven 40-hour workweeks. during all that time, drivers travel more than 10,000 miles. drivers ages 30 to 49 drive more than any other age group.

well, the miss america competition continues tonight and a new winner will be crowned this weekend, but history is already being made in atlantic city. erin o'flattery is miss missouri this year and the first openly lesbian winner in the history. leaders in the local lbgt community are ecstatic she's among those competing. >> wonderful for her. it shows a lot about her character and of course, we hope she wins. >> i'm happy to do it for the lbgt community, but really, i'm just erin and i'm still living my life and we'll see what happens. >> miss missouri's platform is suicide prevention and it's a cause close to her heart since she lost a close friend to suicide when she was just 13. creepy clown sightings have communities on edge. up next, the incidents piling up that are certainly no laughing matter.

nbc 10 app for updates on this breaking news. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. the heat and humidity are on the rise and that's making for dangerous conditions for some people today. people at the shore getting a little bit of a break. here's a live look outside now at cape may, folks out there at the beach. summer break may be over, but summer is still with us for a few more weeks. and today, dangerous heat has returned to workers in hunting park this morning, dealing with the hot and humid conditions out there. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley is here with our warm forecast. >> a pretty good warm-up all around. not much of a break at the beach. that 77 degrees at atlantic city. but inland, don't have to go far to get that heat and the humidity is high for the entire area. 80s for the shore, but look at the 90s this afternoon. the neighborhood forecast, 95 for center city, summerton, chestnut hill, 94. this other number, that's the

feels-like temperature. the humidity, much higher today. it will feel like 103 in center city this afternoon. the suburbs, same story. temperatures into the 90s. 99 this afternoon is what it will feel like in lansdale. and then the lehigh valley, allentown hits 93. it will feel like 99 degrees there. new jersey, sunshine, a few scattered clouds. there is a slight chance of an isolated shower this afternoon. i think most of the day, it's going to be dry. and those feels-like temperatures for berlin and vineland, 101 degrees this afternoon. delaware, sunshine, 102 is what it will feel like in smyrna. and up to 92 degrees in rehoboth beach, while wilmington warms to 92. the shore will see a warm day today, and steamy there, too. in fact, steamier than inland. those temperatures will feel like they're in the upper 90s there as well. and it looks like it's going to continue, until we get to the second half of the weekend. we've got the ten-day on 10 when i come back in just a few minutes. vai? >> thank you, bill. checking out our nbc 10

headlines, crews are making progress, cleaning up an accident on i-95 in newcastle. this tractor-trailer overturned early this morning, just before 2:00 a.m., it spilled unstamped pennies all over the highway. the driver suffered minor injuries. more than 200 prospective jurors are gathering in new jersey for the case connected to the bridgegate scandals. two allies of chris christie are accused of closing bridges on the george washington bridge as a form of political revenge. governor christie is not charged in this case. and surveillance cameras show how a thief threatened a store worker with a box cut perp the riteaid employee noticed how the thief was trying to leave the store with $150 worth of tooth paste he hadn't paid for. police in west texas are searching for an active shooter and schools have been locked down following reports of a shooting at a high school.

this is happening in the town of alpine. it's about 220 miles southeast of el paso. it's not far from the mexico border. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app for updates on this breaking news. and president obama wrapped up his week-long trip to asia today and in his closing arguments said that republican presidential candidate donald trump isn't qualified for the job. nbc's ron allen reports from laos. >> reporter: it didn't take much to get president obama going at a closing news conference here. he was asked about those comments that donald trump made, first suggesting that america's generals has been reduced to rubble by president obama's leadership, and that vladimir putin of russia is a better leader than mr. obama. here's what the president had to say. >> as far as mr. trump, i think i've already offered my opinion. i don't think the guy's qualified to be president of the united states. and every time he speaks, that opinion is confirmed.

and i think the most important thing for the public and the press is to just listen to what he says and follow up and ask questions about what appear to be either contradictory or uninformed or outright whacky ideas. >> reporter: expect more of that next week when president obama heads to battleground pennsylvania, the philadelphia suburbs. the first of numerous solo campaign stops for hillary clinton. targeting the voters who put him over the top, trying to get them excited for hillary clinton. >> and lick lhillary clinton he news conference this morning, blasting donald trump for comments he made last night during the commander in chief for forum. she slammed him for trash talking u.s. generals and called his praise of russian president vladimir putin unpatriotic and insulting. >> he praised russia's strongman, vladimir putin, even taking the astonishing step of

suggesting that he prefers the russian president to our american president. now, that is not just unpatriotic and insulting to the people of our country, as well as to our commander in chief, it is scary. >> clinton stressed that she would make hunting down the leader of isis her administration's number one priority. clinton also got an assist from house democrats on the e-mail issue, which put her on defense last night at the commander in chief forum. house democrats released the 2009 exchange between clinton and another former secretary of state, colin powell, saying it shows how he advised clinton on using a personal e-mail account. nbc's kristen welker has more. >> reporter: hillary clinton facing more tough questions about her use of a private e-mail server during nbc's commander in chief forum wednesday night. >> i communicated about classified material on a wholly

separate system. i took it very seriously. >> reporter: but just moments before clinton took the stage, house democrats led by longtime clinton supporter, elijah cummings, released an extensive 2009 e-mail chain, between clinton and former secretary of state, colin powell, dated two days after clinton took office. cummings calling the exchange a detailed blueprint on how to skirt security rules and bypass requirements to preserve federal records. in the chain, clinton asks powell about restrictions on using a blackberry. powell responds, "i didn't have a blackberry. what i did do was have a personal computer that was hooked up to a private phone line," noting he communicated with a wide range of friends, directly without it going through the state department servers and even used it to do business with some foreign leaders. powell also warned clinton about the dangers of using a blackberry, because data on the pda could become part of the official record, subject to the

law. be very careful, he said. i got around it all by not saying much and not using systems that captured the data. is it a so-called smoking gun for clinton, who has repeatedly pointed to her predecessor's use of a private e-mail to justify her own actions. >> as i've said and now has come out, my predecessors did the same thing and many other people in the government. >> reporter: clinton told the fbi about her 2009 exchange with powell, prompting a review from the former general. powell telling "people" magazine in august, clinton's people are trying to pin it on me. the clinton campaign stresses she told the fbi powell's advice did not affect her decision. still, the ongoing controversy providing fodder for donald trump. >> she deletes 33,000 e-mails and that's after the getting a subpoena from congress. if you do that in private business, you get thrown in jail. >> that was nbc's kristen welker reporting. paul said he had no response. the state department said they could not provide any further

insight into the e-mail exchange. after two years, there's hope this morning for new peace talks between israeli and palestinian leaders. russia's foreign ministry announced today that both sides have agreed in principle to meet in moscow for talks. it's not clear when the meeting will happen. palestine's president said he would only meet if israel frees its construction on palestinian land and releases palestinian prisoners. israel says the meeting should take place without conditions. and police in las vegas have a murder suspect back in custody after he escaped from a police interrogation room. and this was all caught on video. take a look. police say the suspect was able to break free in his handcuffs by using his body weight to twist and snap the chain connecting his cuff to a bar on the table. and then he escaped by climbing through tiles in the drop ceiling. the police chief says cameras were rolling, but nobody was watching the feed at the time. police caught up with the

escapee tuesday night and re-arrested him. residents in parts of the carolinas are on alert because of a rash of reports of creepy clowns hanging around neighborhoods, and sometimes approaching children. nbc's kerry sanders is in greensboro, north carolina, with more. >> it may just be folks clowning around, but it's not funny. more and more people are reporting seeing creepy clowns in their neighborhoods and sop are menacing children. >> a clown last seen wearing a red nose, all white cloet clothing in the woods with a brown box asking kids if they want ice cream. >> reporter: in winston-salem, north carolina, parents are buriebury worried. >> these kids are so terrified that somebody is the trying to lure them in the woods. >> reporter: about 30 miles away in greensboro, police got a 911 call reporting someone wearing a clown suit with a scary mask. >> my husband just spotted a clown in back of the woods. >> reporter: chris bast grabbed a machete and chased after the clown.

in the area. one says he's worried he could become a target of vigilantes whenever he goes out in his clown costume. and a north carolina girl is recovering from a shark bite at a popular tourism destination. we want to warn you, some of these images are graphic. the 12-year-old was swimming off of myrtle beach in south carolina on labor day when she was bitting. she's recovering from 39 puncture wounds and 25 stitches. she's expected to make a full recovery. last year, eight people were bitten by sharks off the south carolina coast. swimming officials have temporarily banned ryan lochte from competitive swimming following his scandal in rio. usa swimming and the u.s. olympic committee has suspended lochte for ten months. that means lochte will miss the 2017 world championship. he will also forfeit $100,000 in bonus money that came along with his gold medal in rio. lochte says he overexaggerated his story about being robbed at a rio gas station and three

and the lehigh valley, low 90s, a little bit cooler tomorrow, and the humidity will drop some on friday, but ramp right back up on saturday. for new jersey, low 90s for today, tomorrow, and again on saturday, while at the shore, expect the crowds to continue growing, with 80s at the shore. delaware, 93 degrees. will feel like it's closer to 100 this afternoon. not as humid tomorrow, but still hot and the heat and humidity ramp right back up on saturday. the weekend, though, that's when we'll finally see some change, after reaching into the 90s for each of our areas on saturday, with the exception of the shore, the heat wave breaks on sunday and it's looking even a little better by monday with low 80s and some 70s for the lehigh valley and 70s at the shore. what you don't see a lot of there are showers. we had some scattered showers first thing this morning. they rolled the through delaware and south jersey, but right now, nothing to show you, and farther off to the north and west, there are some clouds moving through

central pennsylvania, late this evening. those could bring some showers into central pennsylvania and into the lehigh valley. but they're not looking very impressive. lots of warm, muggy air is moving in. there's a chance we'll see a pop-up shower this afternoon. our hour-by-hour forecast showing 3:00 this afternoon, a chance of some showers popping up in south jersey and slowly moving to the east and dying out as we head into the evening hours. not much rainfall, but plenty of heat and humidity. 95 degrees, we're still in summer. late summer heat wave continues tomorrow. and even steamier and hotter on saturday. these are near-record temperatures for the next few days. then, we get a break in the heat and the humidity, as the wind will bring in much more comfortable air on sunday. it will be a dramatic change for sunday, and a gorgeous day monday. 82 degrees, after a morning low of 64 degrees. a little bit cooler on tuesday morning, then into the middle 80s in the afternoon. and another warm-up. we'll see more clouds, a slight chance of some showers on
