philadelphia. 93 in wilmington. and in dover, and it feels like it's over 100 degrees. look at that, 103 in philadelphia. 105 in vineland. 101 in allentown. and 108 in dover. this is like the middle of summer here. margate, new jersey, one of the places getting a break. you've got a bit of a sea breeze. only 81 on long beach island. 83 in ventnor, margate. 97 inland. and mays landing. 93 cape may courthouse. 82 degrees at cape may point. that's why people like to go to the shore in the summertime. near 80 degrees by 6:00 a.m. in philadelphia. that's incredibly warm for a 6:00 a.m. reading at this time of the year. warm even in lehigh valley.

we're not expecting anything other than isolated showers in the next couple of days. we'll see how hot it's going to feel the next couple days, too, in the next few minutes. >> all right, glenn. as we mentioned, philadelphia public and archdiocese schools will dismiss early tomorrow because of the excessive heat. >> but for some parents, tomorrow can't come soon enough, so they took kids out of school today. >> i've called up there and got the run-around so i decided to do something myself. >> reporter: having his daughter sit in a stuffy classroom in south philly just didn't seem right to ron. >> she told me that the acs aren't working well. >> reporter: almost 60% of the schools have air conditioning, and the ones that don't have fans running at full speed. but some parents wonder about the quality of the education on days like this. >> she told me it's just too hot to study. or to listen to the teacher. >> everyone is irritated. the teachers are doing their

best to keep the children comfortable. but when it gets to be this humid and hot out, you know, i think it's best for everybody as a whole to let the children out early. >> reporter: that's the school district's plan for friday, a noon dismissal. but ron's daughter may very well be absent. >> she may not go at all tomorrow. it's supposed to be 90 in the morning. >> now, tomorrow's early dismissal includes all after-school activities, like sports. that means football on friday is canceled. students in reading getting a break from the heat. all middle schools dismissed at 12:15 today. they'll do the same thing tomorrow because they don't have air conditioning. some parents we spoke with, they're not pleased. >> working parents have to find a way to accommodate their children. their parents probably can't even leave work, or leave work early to pick up their children. >> it is only reading's middle schools that don't have ac. the other schools have it. no need for them to let out

early. it was another day of shortened classes in trenton today as well. schools there dismissed early for the second straight day. they'll do the same thing tomorrow. the district has 22 schools, but not all of them have central air conditioning. plan ahead in the extreme heat with the nbc 10 app. you can download it for free. you can get severe weather alerts and this weekend's forecast right on your smartphone or tablet. take a look at this. sky force 10 over piles and piles of pennies causing traffic pileups this morning on i-95 in delaware. a tractor-trailer overturned spilling 40,000 pounds of the copper coins. and that cost local businesses big money. tim furlong is live here along i-95 in new castle. tim, hopefully traffic moving a little bit more smoothly for the afternoon commute? >> reporter: oh, it couldn't have got any worse. it really was as bad as i've ever seen it. this might have been the worst problem on the highway.

traffic moving again, where all the pennies spilled all over the highway. back to the mint in philadelphia. police are investigating what happened and why. this road and roads around it were absolutely jammed up because of it this morning. the calls went out around 2:00 a.m. a tractor-trailer carrying thousands and thousands of unstamped pennies on its side and on fire, all over the highway which led to this call nobody wants to hear. >> tractor-trailer overturned. >> reporter: i-95 north shut down completely for hours at the 295 split in new castle. the driver and passenger had minor injuries. pretty brutal info on the traffic report. lots of red lines on the traffic map. the guys who work at this bike store near christiana hospital -- >> it was a nightmare.

>> reporter: shipments were delayed, customer traffic was minimal. many delaware businesses couldn't even open on time. although some businesses along the detour routes, they made out okay today. >> everything was backed up. you know, for miles. as far as you could see. >> reporter: it was a rough day for them. travelers passing through who already don't like delaware's stretch of 95. this didn't help. >> just never come back. >> reporter: find a penny, pick it up, right? pennies are made entirely of zinc, by the way, not copper. police haven't said if the driver will be charged in the rollover. the rest of us in delaware, i'll tell you this, we are absolutely hoping nothing like this ever happens again. history tells us, though, unfortunately it will. luckily nobody was hurt in this crash. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. certainly not a good day for drivers along 95 in delaware. less than 15 miles from where the pennies spilled, this happened. sky force 10 was over the

southbound lanes in newark. this tractor-trailer overturned just before 11:00 this morning. nobody here seriously hurt either. but three of the lanes were closed for some time while crews cleaned up. to the north, jury selection under way in the so-called bridgegate trial. two associates of chris christie scheming to cause gridlock by closing lanes near the george washington bridge. prosecutors said they did it to get back at a local mayor who refused to endorse governor christie. open statements are set for september 19th. he went from snatching purses to breaking into a house and opening fire in a matter of minutes. and this afternoon, philadelphia police say they have the man responsible for these crimes. according to officers, the suspect in this case busted through the front door of the house on oakmont street right around 11:00 last night. he ended up taking prescription drugs, and a computer. but only after hitting a man

inside with his gun and then firing a shot into the floor. police arrested the suspect not far away. they tell us that a woman later identified him as the man who stole her purse at gunpoint just down the street from a home invasion. police say they have the man who stole a stash of guns from a shop four months ago. officers caught up with jabar kendall in virginia. they say he broke into the suburban army sporting goods store back in may and took 19 guns. delaware county authorities are now working to bring him back to pennsylvania. a main line college is reaching out to former itt technical institute students who may be looking for a new school. harkham college is offering up to $5,000 scholarships to itt tech students. the itt institute announced it is shutting down all its campuses, four in our area.

now to our decision 2016 coverage. today it's a third party presidential candidate who's making headlines. >> instead of answering a question, libertarian gary johnson asked a question, and that caused quite a stir on social media. take a look. >> what would you do if you were elected about aleppo, about aleppo? >> what is aleppo? >> you're kidding? >> no. >> aleppo is in syria. >> johnson said he blanked when he was asked about the name of syria's largest city on morning joe this morning. soon after aleppo became one of the top ten trends on triter today. and we asked the voters the question, does experience matter in this election? nbc 10's lauren mayk has their answers, and she's in the studio for us. >> hillary clinton's experience as secretary of state is being used as a positive and also a negative. donald trump doesn't have government foreign policy experience.

so we wanted to know how that and the candidates' views of the world play into voters' decisions. it was a preview to a 2016 debate. >> we're not putting ground troops in iraq ever again and we're not putting ground troops into syria. >> reporter: and donald trump. >> under the leadership of barack obama and hillary clinton, the generals have been reduced to rubble. >> reporter: they made their case in front of a military audience. >> i think they both had high and low moments. but neither hit a home run. >> reporter: a political p professor of science at rutgers. >> they needed to answer tough questions about clinton's e-mails, for trump, about his response to, or relationship with vladimir putin. >> reporter: with two months to go before election day, we asked students here how foreign policy plays into their decision. >> did her experience as secretary of state play into

dead heat in florida. and trump still insisting he opposed the war in iraq from the beginning, although fact checkers said that claim is false. he did so while visiting a cleveland area charter school. his position on the war is coming under increasing scrutiny as he attacks hillary clinton for authorizing the war while in the senate. clinton spoke in charlotte today, where she slammed voter identification laws. she praised the ruling that struck down a voter i.d. law. it was. delaware's governor has hit the campaign trail for hillary clinton. governor jack markell stumped for clinton today in ohio. ohio, of course, is a crucial swing state. markell was an early supporter in clinton in her primary contest against vermont senator bernie sanders. and markell introduced her at a campaign appearance in april. chelsea clinton continued her campaign tour on behalf of her mother.

chelsea made a pair of stops in pennsylvania yesterday. these, by the way, are her first public appearances since the democratic national convention in philadelphia in july. count on nbc 10 for complete decision 2016 coverage as we count down the weeks until the general election. for updates from the campaign trail, and our one-on-one interviews with the presidential nominees, just tap the nbc 10 app. now to an nbc 10 exclusive police in atlanta county have a cemetery caper on their hands. hundreds of decorative railings and gravestone posts and other items stolen this summer from cemeteries. a detective spotted the items outside a house owned by a local antiques dealer. that dealer said he bought the items from a man and a woman, but insists he didn't know they were stolen. investigators now hope to hear from relatives of people buried in those cemeteries as they work to identify and return the

items. >> if they can recognize it, tell us who it belongs to, where it goes, we would love to hear from you so we can put it back. >> the alleged cemetery thieves face several charges. their names haven't been released yet. ahead on nbc 10 news at 5:00, why the antiques dealer says why all those stolen items were outside his home in the first place. the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks is this sunday. and now an iconic image from that dark day is back at the world trade center site. an american flag that firefighters hoisted at ground zero after the attacks is now on display at the september 11th museum in new york. the flag's owner discovered it was missing when she went to donate it to the museum. turns out it was turned in two years ago by an unidentified man at a firehouse in washington state. president obama will deliver remarks at a pentagon ceremony on sunday marking the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. nearly 3,000 people were killed

on september 11th. 184 of them died when an american airline jetliner slammed into the pentagon. a company expanding a recall for door latch issue. that recall now includes the 2012 through 2015 ford focus. the 2013 to 2015 force escape and c max, 2015 mustang and lincoln mkc. ford said a spring tab in the door latches could break and the doors won't close or could swing open. dealers will replace the latches for free. a strike has hit one of the lehigh valley's most iconic businesses. workers at the bethlehem plant that makes marshmallow peeps are at the picket line. they walked out of the plant wednesday afternoon. it's known best for its peeps. but the plant also makes mike and ike and hot tamales

candidates. the workers have been without a contract since june. camden catholic high school welcomed a new class of students today. the class of 2020 went through freshman orientation. dozens of current students helped to bring in the new class. camden catholic is the oldest catholic high school in south jersey. the boss went down in history in south philly last night. ♪ bruce springsteen and the e street band set a personal record at citizens bank park. they played for more than four hours, breaking their longest set record. springsteen plays in south philly again on friday night. i have tickets to this. i was told to wear comfortable shoes because i'll be standing for about four hours. his tour wraps up later this month.

temperatures. 107 in middletown. 109 in dover. 105 in middleford. 111 in marshallton. over at the beaches, bethany beach feels like 102. not much relief at those beaches today. although the jersey shore got some. we had showers and storms up near the pennsylvania/new york border, near lake erie. but in our portion of the world, just one shower. lancaster county. could sneak into chester county. but that is about it. so feels like 100 degrees right now. how long is that going to last? through saturday. 95, feeling like 105 now. feeling like 102 tomorrow. 103 on saturday. the 86 degrees on sunday, feeling like 86.

so that's a 17-degree improvement from saturday on the way it's going to feel. so these are the records for tomorrow. the record 94 in philadelphia. predicting 95. predicting 93 in allentown, close to the record. mount holly, predicting the record there, also predicting records in millville and tying a record in delaware. here's the feels-like temperature. even this evening, feeling like the mid-90s. as we go into tomorrow morning, it's warm. tomorrow afternoon, feeling like about 100. and then saturday, pretty much the same thing. feeling like close to 100 degrees. we definitely have a couple more days of this. if we get any relief in the form of rain, there we go friday morning, friday afternoon.

maybe lehigh valley, poconos, we've got a shot of just a few showers around. but that's about it. the temperatures, the neighborhoods here, somerton 94 tomorrow, feeling like 99. allentown, 93, feeling like 97. so the only relief we get is at the jersey shore. but that's not much relief because we're going to have a northwest wind. harrington and delaware, feeling like 103 degrees. so it is going to be rough on friday. it's going to be rough on saturday. but dramatic improvement on sunday, most places about ten degrees cooler. the highlight, the great things happening right here at nbc 10 at the annual philly ad club in center city.

going over 100 degrees right now. and that is going to continue to be an issue as we go through tomorrow. it will be feeling almost exactly like it feels right now, over 100 degrees. 102 degrees at the moment in philadelphia. 108 degrees in dover. and we'll finish up with the rest of the weather a little bit later. >> we'll check back with you, glenn. a woman says a store sold her a mattress that sagged after just a few months. >> yeah, and when she tried to get help from the company, her efforts just went nowhere. so she contacted harry hairston and "nbc 10 responds." harry, tell us the story here. >> i tell you, this woman, she thought she had found a great bargain when she bought this bed. but, you know, this piece of furniture literally kept her tossing and turning all night long.

she paid more than $1,800 for this mattress from ashley furniture in may 2015. she tells us she expected it to last for years. until she noticed a problem. >> this is where i slept. six months later, it started to cave in. i could feel that i felt like i was rolling in a gulley. >> reporter: in certain spots, the bed seemed to sink and sag. >> i'm not sleeping. i'm uncomfortable. >> reporter: she says she complained to ashley furniture last november. days later the company sent someone out to inspect the mattress. >> i get a call a few days later, they tell me that the measurements were within normal range. and that there's nothing they can do about it. >> reporter: she said ashley furniture denied her request to see the report. after nine months it refused her pleas to have ashley reinspect the mattress. so she contacted "nbc 10 responds." >> i see all the stories you do.

use continues to rise among college students. researchers at the university of michigan found 38% of students used marijuana last year. that's up from 30% in 2006. abuse of prescription drugs, heroin and amphetamines, that's declined on college campuses. earlier today, nbc 10 was in south philadelphia to kick off hunger action month. they launched the month-long fund-raiser and food drive. the goal is to raise 50,000 meals for people across the delaware valley. several trucks were parked outside the event to give the food donations a boost. on the eve of his induction, sixers legend allen iverson, no show. >> randy gyllenhaal followed fans to massachusetts for tomorrow's ceremony. not the surprise they were expecting. right, randy? >> reporter: yeah. allen iverson missed the big ceremony. today he did eventually show up. we'll show you the brand-in you exhibit here at the hall of fame honoring this sixers icon.

the career of the sixers legend comes to the biggest stage in basketball. the hall of fame. allen iverson will be inducted in a ceremony tomorrow night. but on the eve of his induction, ai was nowhere to be found. >> iverson missed an important news conference, also practice with his hall of fame classmates. nbc 10 followed sixers fans from philadelphia to springfield, massachusetts, to tomorrow's big event. we're giving you an inside look at ai's exhibit. randy jillen is live for us.

and as we look right into the city of philadelphia itself, we have some numbers a little bit higher than that. the airport's 95. graduate hospital 96. it was reading 98 degrees just an hour or so ago. center city, society hill, 95. 95 degrees in bustleton. 93 in tarsdale. so, yeah, it is hot across the entire area. there's not any relief in the form of rain anywhere close by. you've got to go to the northwestern pennsylvania to see the line of showers and thunderstorms. one measly little shower in lancaster county, and that one's dying out. the futurecast shows for tomorrow, scattered showers or thunderstorms possible. berks county, lehigh valley, poconos, and that's about it. another chance late saturday or saturday night. best chance again would be lehigh valley, and the poconos.

so, yeah, it feels like a hundred degrees. and it's going to stay that way. tomorrow 95, feeling like 102. saturday, 96, feeling like 103. but then things change. just in time for the eagles game. we have relief. way lower humidity. yes, the temperature's down. it's still warm for football. but compared to the day before, it's a dramatic change. 86 degrees by the end of the game. 81 at kickoff. again, very low humidity. so you'll be able to tolerate this. you can see in philadelphia, there's the hot weather friday, saturday, drops a couple of days in a row. dover, drops to near 80 degrees. doesn't even get to 80 in allentown by monday. and wildwood, dropping to 76 by monday.

that is quite a change. and at the jersey shore, it's going to be hot tomorrow, near 90 degrees, because of the northwest wind. and then we get more of a relief on saturday, because it will be a sea breeze. and then just generally cooler weather. plus sea breezes coming in on monday and tuesday. what about the next ten days? look, we need some rain. it's been dry around here. again, just a slight chance of an afternoon shower or storm friday and into saturday. sunday is dry. monday, tuesday, bright and sunny. nice and comfortable. really nice. it heats up wednesday. that's our best chance for showers and thunderstorms. and then look at the cooler weather coming in toward the end of next week, and next weekend. yeah, next weekend is not going to be anywhere near as hot as this weekend. >> very different. >> obviously labor day signifies the unofficial end to summer,
