these school districts do not have air conditioning units like the one you're seeing right up here, if they don't have central air or have poor ventilation, district officials said it's not a healthy environment to learn. >> it's really hot. it was, i don't know, temperature-wise, probably 98-ish. >> reporter: they left school today with their cheeks flushed from the heat and water bottles in hand. they said being in the classroom felt more like a toaster oven before the noon bell rang. >> it was really hard to concentrate because all you were thinking about was the heat. >> reporter: most of the elementary schools and high schools don't have central air conditioning. and they're not alone. from the camden classroom to trenton, a number of districts erred on the side of student caution by closing early. >> if the bus wasn't running, my father took me. >> no excuses? >> none. never, we never got canceled for

just a short time after the shooting, around 11:15, you see a number of officers and others gathered outside a house there. there's a lot we still don't know about this case, including a possible motive, or a description of the killer. the mercer county homicide task force is investigating. take a look at this video. this is what's left of a row home on locust street in west philadelphia. you can see a massive hole where the second floor used to be after the roof caved in. city officials tell us the property was vacant and no one was injured. the day of remembrance in washington, d.c. today. members of congress gathered on the steps of the capitol to remember the 15th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. they prayed and sang along with the marine corps band as it played "god bless america." a moment of silence was held to honor the fallen. the new york stock exchange honored the nearly 3,000 victims

of the september 11th attacks as well today. they held this moment of silence ahead of the opening bell to begin trading this morning. the world trade center attack happened just blocks from wall street, and the stock exchange was closed for several days after that tragedy. nbc 10's tim furlong is live for us in delaware county where people gathered for a 9/11 memorial service today. >> and tim, an emotional day there we can imagine. >> reporter: yeah. absolutely. as you come to rose street park any day of the year, you see all the memorials to firefighters and police officers, it's very powerful. you come here to talk about september 11th, and the attacks that took so many american lives. and it kind of chokes you up and gives you chills all at the same time. nobody took a knee during the anthem in rose street park today. not on this day of remembrance. >> the tragic day, september 11th, 2001. >> reporter: this delaware

county ceremony didn't just honor the 343 firefighters and 71 police officers killed in the september 11th attacks, the ceremony also honored those who still serve today, including officer christopher dorman shot seven times on june 24th. he heads back to work tonight. a proud day for him but still a tough day for so many. the chaplain went to ground zero right after the attack and helped out for months. >> when i arrived there, every sense is offended. your throat is filled with dust, eyes, the smells in the air, the fires were incredible. >> reporter: >> he went to work 15 years ago, on a september 11th day. >> reporter: steve talked about his brother, robert, a flight attendant in the plane that hit the south tower. he remembers his brother telling him about his training, and how he prayed he would never need it. >> i told him if you're ever

pennsylvania state trooper wounded in the line of duty intends to sue the man who allegedly shot him and the suspect's parents. trooper alex douglas spent months in the hospital after the 2014 ambush outside the blooming grove barracks in the poconos. eric freen was arrested for that shooting. freen hid in the woods for almost 50 days before u.s. marshals found him in an old airplane hangar in monroe county. he's now awaiting trial. bill cosby's lawyers are suggesting the sexual assault case against him is racially motivated. specifically, they're talking -- taking aim at gloria allred. cosby's team said allred is behind a campaign that, quote, builds on racial bias and prejudice. legal experts say it may be their attempt to sway potential jurors ahead of next june's claims. cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting andrea

constock in 2004. the nuclear test is called a grave threat to our regional security. the u.s. will never accept north korea as a nuclear state. north korea says the test will allow it to build stronger, smaller and lighter nuclear weapons. to decision 2016 now. election day less than two months away. the first ballots are already being cast. today advanced voting began in north carolina. the first 37 states that allowed balloting by mail. and the push for pennsylvania continues today. former commander in chief bill clinton made a campaign stop near pittsburgh earlier this afternoon. president clinton spoke to a crowd of around 500 people, and called for unity behind his wife's campaign. mr. clinton portrayed democrats as offering a more expansive view of the country and its future than the one donald trump is offering. trump is in washington for the valued voters summit. a live look at his address to the crowd at the annual

gathering of social conservative activists. from there he'll head to florida nor a rally in pensacola. a key figure in former congressman fatah's corruption case was sentenced to four years probation today and slapped with a $5,000 fine. he pleaded guilty in 2014. now during the congressman's trial, lindenfeld testified for the prosecution that he took out an illegal $1 million loan to fund fattah's campaign. the case centered on the loan. fattah will be sentenced next month. the delaware zip line course where a woman fell to her death last month is officially back open for business. the delaware department of natural resources and environmental control has approved the reopening of the zip line at the go ape tree tops adventure. officials say the course does

meet safety standards. the trump taj mahal is moving closer to closing its doors next month. the petition was filed earlier this week, made public today. in july, the casino's ownership announced it would shut down after negotiations with the union stalled out. the taj will close october 10th as planned. a strike affecting an iconic business. nbc 10 has learned the maker of marshmallow peeps has started hiring replacement workers. it comes after about 400 workers walked out of the plant wednesday. just born said it looks forward to continued talks with the union representing those workers. the company also makes mike and ike's and hot tamale candies. he provided philadelphia fans with magical moments like this one for more than a decade.

and tonight allen iverson gets his moment. he's about to be inducted into basketball's hall of fame. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live at the hall of fame in massachusetts. >> just a few hours until the ceremony, randy. but a bit of a glitch earlier, right? >> reporter: a little bit of drama. as you mentioned, in just a few hours, allen iverson will be formally enshrined into the basketball hall of fame. it's a big moment for a.i., the pinnacle of his career. he'll be walking down this red carpet shortly. but you mentioned the hiccups, this week comes as a little drama as the superstar misses his first two events of this hall of fame weekend. at the high school auditorium today, hundreds of kids got the rare chance to hear from basketball hall of famers, like cheryl swoops, who will be enshrined as a legend later tonight. >> this is as a basketball player, it doesn't get any better than this. >> reporter: she told students, follow your dreams. always work hard. but notably missing here once

you will. springsteen at citizens bank park, and adele at the wells fargo center. this will be the second show this week for springsteen and the e street band. they set a record wednesday night playing for four hours, 3 minutes, and 23 seconds. if you were keeping count. tonight's show, that's set for 7:30. hello, adele, a half hour later across the street she'll perform the first of two soldout shows. she'll perform again at the wells fargo center tomorrow night. tailgaters sweat it out in south philadelphia. plenty of other folks have headed to the shore to search for relief from the heat. beach businesses are hoping for a big weekend after a letdown over labor day. nbc 10's ted greenburg is live in ocean city for us. >> big weekend down there, right, ted? >> reporter: it certainly is, jim and rosemary.

and it has been a hot and steamy beach day. even here right along the coast. you can see no shortage of people. these guys playing a little paddle ball right now. in some communities, though, there's a lot less beach than there was just a week ago. on this post-labor day friday, mario and debbie orlando of marlton found some relief from the late season heat, along the surf in beach haven. >> actually, i thought it would be hotter than it was. with the breeze it's pretty nice. >> reporter: they also discovered a much smaller and more rugged beach after waves fueled by hermine washed away a lot of sand last weekend. the erosion coming soon after a major beach protection and replenishment project here. >> it was much lighter. >> we were down here in late june. this beach was completely flat. you didn't walk at an angle at all. now you can see there's a big difference. >> reporter: another noticeable difference, bigger crowds after labor day.

weather. >> it does look like a great weekend at the shore. and across much of the rest of the area, especially on sunday. 93 degrees right now in philadelphia. we did break the record. 95 degrees for the high today. that record 1032 years old. parts of new jersey, 93, 92 lehigh valley, 91 in delaware. but again, the humidity is so high, that's the issue. it makes it feel so much hotter. 108 in audubon. 10 in piles grove. 106 in mount laurel. and in pemberton. atco reading 113. i mean, these numbers are incredible. we've got one more day of that. kind of dry across much of the philadelphia area. and points to the south. we do have a few little light showers coming up through the poconos right noi. and perhaps a few more as we go

through the night. the weekend, it's going to be part steamy, but part comfortable. we're talking about that extreme heat and humidity tomorrow. but it's going to be much, much different on sunday. not only a ten-degree drop in temperature, but we're not going to have the high humidity. the humidity is going to be dropping during the day. so it will feel much, much more comfortable. the only place that's different is at the jersey shore, interestingly enough. cooler on saturday than on sunday. because there's a strong sea breeze tomorrow, and more of a land breeze on sunday. so things get a little bit reversed. but it will be less humid at the shore on sunday. so we're close to the record levels for tomorrow. the record in philadelphia is 97. predicting 96. westchester close to a record. millville beating a record. we've got one more day of this. and the humidity, too.

feels like close to 100 across much of the area now. as we go through the night tonight, and into the morning, it's feeling like 80s. to start the day. and then in the afternoon, feeling like 102 in philadelphia, 103 in trenton and burlington. 100 in dover. and then take a look at what happens. by sunday afternoon, at 3:30 p.m., 82. not 102, 82. that's a 20-degree difference in the way it's going to feel. as we go through the night tonight, a few showers possible. up toward the lehigh valley, and poconos. tomorrow afternoon, if there is any, it would be generally to the north. saturday night, and into very, very early sunday morning would be the most likely time for any kind of showers. but by the time the eagles are

harmony hills 100. farther to the south, there's dover at 109. that's a different site in dover. felton, 100. lewis, 103 at the beach. bethany beach. 105. that's not any relief. same story as we had yesterday. so it's hot all night tonight. temperatures barely get below 80 degrees in philadelphia. there could be a shower or thunderstorm in some of the pennsylvania suburbs, especially the lehigh valley. and poconos. but it should stay dry, delaware, jersey, jerry shore. much cooler next week. we'll get into that in a few minutes. we are working to uncover new details in the latest scandal brewing around the philadelphia district attorney's office. it centers around seth williams' girlfriend who's accused of slashing the tires on two city-owned cars right in front of his house last november. but prosecutors didn't file

charges until two weeks ago. we want to know why it's taken so long, and whether proper protocol was followed right after the incident happened. i've been working to get to the bottom of it. we checked last night, and parked in the driveway of the district attorney's house, the crown victoria. prosecutors say cummings admitted to slashing the tires on a crown vic and ford escape, both owned by the city of philadelphia and assigned to seth williams' security detail. we got our hands on the affidavit of probable cause trying to find out what sparked the slashing. was it revenge? there's no motive discussed in the police paperwork. what about protocol? also according to the paperwork, there's no indication anyone filed a vandalism report before sergeant daniel kearney in charge of the detail notified the city of fleet management to repair the tires. our sources say that should have happened. >> it's rosemary connors with

nbc 10 again. >> seth williams isn't saying anything either. i called and e-mailed his office repeatedly this week, but his spokesperson tells us the district attorney who faces reelection next year isn't scheduling any one-on-one interviews. and they won't public his schedule citing safety concerns. just this week williams smiled for the camera at three different back-to-school events in philadelphia. i found this from last month. posted on its website of upcoming events, penn state philadelphia chapter invited incoming freshman to hear from guest speaker seth williams. the time and place clearly listed in advance. now, seth williams' office referred the criminal case to the delaware county district attorney because of the conflict of interest, citing the criminal investigation, a spokesperson for williams will not say whether there is any kind of review under way in their office to determine if the case was

the federal aviation administration has a warning for passengers who own a samsung galaxy note7 phone. they're being asked not to turn on or charge their phones during flights because of concerns over the batteries catching fire. last week samsung recalled all galaxy note7 phones after reports of some of them exploding while they were charging. in the past half hour, the consumer product safety commission said you shouldn't charge your phone at all because of the risk. teens may think twice about choosing a sugary beverage if it has a health warning. 2,000 teens chose a sugared beverage. but when they saw warnings about obesity and tooth decay, 18% were less likely to choose those drinks.

parkside 95. 95 in somerton as well. that is too hot. and we have high humidity on top of that. a couple of little showers moving west to east through the lehigh valley. and the poconos. and that trend will continue through the evening. it's obviously nothing very heavy at the moment. and the future cast shows nothing more than some isolated showers tomorrow afternoon. but the main threat would be tomorrow night, overnight tomorrow night, if that front that's coming through holds together, that's the front that's going to bring us the more comfortable air as we go into sunday. here we are at 1:00 p.m. there's the clearing line, nothing but sunshine for the north and west. so the clouds may be at the shore for sunday morning, and then even the shore starts to clear. now, we have record heat today in parts of the area. 95 in philadelphia.

broke that old record set in 1884. atlantic city international, broke the record by 4 degrees. wilmington broke it by 1. trenton has tied the record, at least so far. but we're not going to be seeing any kind of record heat as the eagles play in the afternoon. it's going to be clearing, a little bit of a breeze, lowering humidity. kickoff, 81. end of the game, 86 degrees. a little warm for football, but way better than saturday, when temple has to play in the afternoon. here's the future feels-like temperature. near 100 degrees right now. and as we go through the night, it doesn't really drop a whole lot. 82 degrees. we set a record low temperature this morning. it didn't get below 80 degrees. then tomorrow afternoon, there we are again, 100, 101, 102

voorhees in the afternoon. so not much different than today. perhaps a little bit more wind. but then look at sunday. 4:00 p.m., 84 for the feels-like in philadelphia. 86 in burlington. 88 in lynnwood. it's going to feel a little warmer at the jersey shore because it's more of a land breeze. look at allentown saturday to sunday. then monday, only 79 degrees. wildwood, only 76 -- 78 degrees early next week. philadelphia it's to the low 80les. and dover we go down to 80 degrees for the high. so that's quite a change that we're going to be seeing from the current reading all the way to next week. at the shore we've got a lot of sunshine saturday. early clouds on sunday. and in the poconos, we get the clouds mostly on saturday with a chance of a shower. and then cooler weather for sunday.

hard to believe it has been 15 years since the september 11th terror attacks. this year, two major organizations serving military members and families as well as law enforcement and first responders will team up on the anniversary. >> that's right. hundreds of runners will take to the streets of norristown to raise money to support those organizations and to remember those who have not come home. as nbc 10's deanna durante shows us, it's not too late to show your support. >> reporter: you wouldn't know it by looking at his office today. sean cohen is a norristown lawyer. but lately he's spending his days handing out t-shirts and filling out registration forms for the hero fund race.

at the shore either. a live look at ocean city. look at those waves crashing against the sand. we saw heat records broken at the jersey shore. and in delaware today. you need to watch the heat, too, as you head into the weekend. >> that's because the heat, the humidity is going to be with us for a little while longer. let's get the latest from glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, fill us in on this. >> yeah, rosemary, it's going to be just about as hot tomorrow and just about as humid as it was today. the only exception at the shore, where it will be much cooler because of the sea breeze. we did reach 95 degrees today, which did break the record set 132 years ago. tomorrow we're going for 96. and then only 86 degrees on sunday. that's going to feel a whole lot more comfortable by comparison. there's the 95 in philadelphia. atlantic city international beat the record by four degrees. wilmington beat the record. trenton tied a record. and
