we begin with september weather, summer september weather. talk about a sweaty night to tailgate. and music at the sports complex. the music fans get ready to hear bruce springsteen or maybe adele. not much relief for people who flock to the beach in ocean city this afternoon. nbc 10 first alef chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with a look at what we can expect in your neighborhood. glenn? >> yeah, the shore finally did get a sea breeze after some hot weather earlier in the day. and we've set records. the record 95 today in philadelphia. it beat a record of 132 years old. tomorrow we could be close to a record, too, but not on sunday. this is not going to last. we have broken or tied these records. the record was 94 in philadelphia. atlantic city international broke a record by four degrees. wilmington broke the record,

trenton tied the record. and it's still plenty hot out there. 91 in in philadelphia, 93 in mount holly. we have temperatures in the 90s and it feels like it's close to 100 in dover. it feels like it's 103. we don't have a whole lot of showers around. we've seen some in the lehigh valley. and in the poconos. most of those have weakened. but we sent storm ranger out to check out these showers, and some of them are so tiny, that the conventional radars can't even see them. but that's a tight little intense shower just south of buckingham. bridge valley in bucks county. look at that. near swamp road to forrest grove road. this shower, undetected, by the stationary radar, because they're too far away, and the shower is so tiny.

that's why we sent storm ranger close to the storms. we'll be back with the rest of the weekend forecast and the next week coming up. now to the breaking news. a s.w.a.t. situation just ended in west philadelphia. nbc 10's andrea cline-thomas is the first reporter on the scene there. andrea, what have you learned in the last five minutes? >> reporter: well, we just talked to the police commissioner who gave us an update on the situation. a hostage situation it's over right now. two people are in the hospital now. we're told they have nonlife-threatening injuries. this is the video we shot from sky force 10. the hostage situation involved four children. police are responding to a call they tell us about a woman who had a gunshot wound when they went into the house. a man shot at them. and that's what started the hostage situation. again, children were in the home. then we're told that a mother was in the house, the mother of the child was in the house. the man was in the basement,

barricaded in the basement. the mother was talking to police. and allowed them to come in when she knew the coast was clear to arrest the man without incident. again, two people are shot. we're told they have nonlife-threatening injuries. none of the children were hurt. no officers were hurt. a very tense situation for about almost two hours now. but the situation is over. that's the latest here in west philadelphia. andrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> dramatic images there, andrea cline-thomas in west philly tonight. thank you. now back to the extreme heat today. beaches at the jersey shore were packed. a lot of businesses have high hopes they'll rebound this weekend after hermine threatened the coast last weekend. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenburg checked out the beaches from cape may county to ocean county today. >> reporter: well, there has been no shortage of beachgoers on this hot, post-labor day

friday. and many shore merchants are hoping that this late summer heat wave will drive folks back to the beach after last weekend's bust. barbara hunt and her family are in north wildwood a week late after the threat of hermine caused them to change their labor day weekend plans. >> with the baby, we figured the sand would be whipping so it wouldn't be a very good thing. we decided to come this weekend. >> reporter: now they're here for a wave of late summer heat along with many others. but sarah russell says not too many. >> better to come after labor day. still nice weather. no crowds. everything's cheaper. >> reporter: the matador ocean front resort is sold out after getting hit with guests canceling or leaving early last weekend. >> it hurt a lot of businesses on the island. which just makes these next few weekends that much more important for us. >> reporter: in beach haven, folks hitting the sand found less of it, and tough terrain in spots. >> there's a huge drop to step down onto the beach to take a

walk. >> reporter: waves fueled by hermine washed away a lot of the sand last weekend. the erosion coming soon after a major beach protection and replenishment project here. >> it was a lot wider obviously. there was more graduation in the sand versus now it's a significant drop-off. >> reporter: jersey shore communities have also lost a lot of their lifeguards this late in the season. prompting concerns about larger than normal crowds this weekend. >> it makes things a lot easier, makes them more safe. >> reporter: lifeguards will be stationed at just eight beaches this weekend through september 18th. after that, none will be guarded. in ocean city, i'm ted greenburg, nbc 10 news. excessive heat and humidity forced schools across our area to send students home early today. for some districts this is the third day in a row of getting out at lunchtime. one new jersey student told us even with fans on, he found it

in pennsylvania for the past two days. now it's her father's turn. former commander in chief bill clinton made a campaign stop near pittsburgh this afternoon. president clinton spoke to a crowd of around 500 people. and called for unity behind his wife's campaign. permission to close. billionaire carl icahn asked if it's okay to shut down the trump taj mahal next month. the management team filed a formal petition to begin taking down tables and moving machines off the floor. but said icahn is losing millions every month. it's scheduled to close at 6:00 a.m. on october 10th. i want to go to great memories about allen iverson and the sixers, because this is a big weekend for him. not here in philadelphia, but in massachusetts. he is inducted into the hall of fame. we want to go to nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal who is there for the

big event. randy? >> reporter: yeah, jim, this is the pinnacle of allen iverson's story. ten-plus year career with the 76ers. let me show you what's going on here. there's a red carpet happening right now in springfield, massachusetts, at the hall of fame. not sure who's getting out of this suv right now, but we're expecting -- it's actually shaquille o'neal. we're expecting allen iverson to come up next as he walks the red carpet. he'll be formally inducted along with shaquille o'neal, plus yao ming of the houston rockets. a big moment tonight happening in springfield mass. in the halls of the hall of fame, you'll find sixers legends, wilt chamberlain, julius irving and joining them now, the iconic number 3. >> unbelievable that he did what he could with the size that he was. >> reporter: just 6 foot tall, allen iverson was phillies' underdog. >> he put that team on his back. and he got them to that finals. >> reporter: but controversy was never far behind success. critics complained about his

he's chatting with reporters here as he arrives on the red carpet. again, we're still waiting on yao ming. a.i. accepting his induction into the hall of fame. and the speech he's expected to give. live in springfield, massachusetts, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. new at 6:00, new competition for an epi pen-like device. it hopes to launch a device by 2018. its u.s. headquarters is in north wales, montgomery county. it hopes to win fd aapproval by the end of next year for the epi pen device. mylan has come under fire for the high cost of its device. a key figure in fattah's corruption case was sentenced to four years pro days today. he admitted to taking out an illegal $1 million loan to fund fattah's campaign.

two philadelphia universities are combining into one. thomas jefferson university and philadelphia university announced the deal. the combined university will become the fifth largest school in philadelphia with more than 7,000 students. independence blue cross debuted the new customer center in center city, called independence live. anyone who has a question about their insurance or health in general can go right there to talk to someone in person. the new center is located in the company's building on market street. up next, on nbc 10 news at 6:00, remembering 9/11. tonight local communities honor first responders. plus, the special guest coming to the eagles game. on sunday. we broke records in parts of our region today. but relief is on the way for at least a part of the weekend. the weather in your neighborhood

nbc 10's tim furlong reports. >> reporter: it was a very hot day for a ceremony. >> welcome to rose tree park. >> reporter: but nobody here complained. 15 years after the september 11th attacks, we all still remember it. delaware county they remembered their lost neighbors. today's ceremony also honored local firefighters and police officers, that includes christopher dorman shot seven times in late june. he heads back to work tonight. >> the attacks against us destroyed lives. >> reporter: city leaders and 9/11 victim family members honored the anniversary in a ceremony. this man's brother was a flight attendant on the plane that hit the south tower. they urged everyone to talk about 9/11 with their kids and always remember those who died and those who have fought for our freedom ever since. >> honor those who died.

to forget or deny them their place in history. to forget would be cowardly. >> reporter: i've covered a lot of these ceremonies over the years. a lot of it say it's easier to get through it to talk about it. i say it's easier, but it's never going to get easy to talk about the attacks on america on september 11th, 2001. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. in new jersey, governor chris christie ordered flags lowered to half staff at state government buildings on sunday. 700 people from the garden state died in the september 11th attacks. vice president joe biden will attend the eagles game on sunday at the linc. the vp will be on the sidelines for the pregame for a special remembrance to 9/11 victims. 120 first responders will join the vice president during the national anthem. record heat in some areas this afternoon. temperatures going down just a little bit now. 91 in philadelphia. some of the pennsylvania

suburbs, chester county, montgomery, and bucks. it's near 90 degrees in unionville, malvern 90, st. david's 88, warrington 90. and of course, the high humidity everywhere. no showers around the philadelphia area, or points to the south. we've had a few in the lehigh valley. and up in the poconos. and we didn't think that there were any in bucks county. here's bucks county. and you don't see anything. however, we sent storm ranger 10 down there. and this is the main ring of protection. so we're within 30 miles. and lo and behold, there are some showers in bucks county. this one is just north of north hampton. we showed you that a little while ago. this other one is right near trenton. look at that. and that's a pretty heavy shower.

totally undetected by the stationary radar system that exists right now. this shower is so small, the radar beam from the other radars, because it's so far away, is too wide to see the tiny showers. that's a heavy shower right over marsville. and we can show you the streets, too. where that shower is. and it's moving toward trenton. the weekend, well, part steamy, and then we're going to get some relief. 96 degrees tomorrow. close to a record. and then we drop, not only the temperature, but the humidity. so it drops about ten degrees everywhere, except at the jersey shore. we've got a sea breeze keeping things cooler on saturday and a land breeze keeping things warmer on sunday. the future feels-like, well, as we go through the night tonight, it's going to be another warm one. last night was the warmest september night ever recorded in philadelphia. it never got below 80.

tomorrow afternoon, it's going to feel like 101 in philadelphia. and trenton and burlington and swedesboro and wilmington. but not on sunday. no way. now, it could feel like it's in the mid to upper 80s. that's still kind of warm for football. but that's still nothing compared to what we're seeing on saturday. and fortunately, temple's got to play football. 96 degrees, feeling like 101. in south philly tomorrow afternoon. somerton 95. feeling like 101. phoenixville 92, feeling like 97. easton 93, feeling like 98. feeling like 100 in eastman township. not quite as bad at the shore. that's why people go to the shore. harrington, though, and delaware, 103. by the time the eagles get to play, we're going to be getting
