correspondent peter alexander. >> reporter: hillary clinton is off the trail again today, she's home here in chappaqua. she says she is feeling so much better and admits she should have gotten more rest much sooner but this morning her biggest wound is self-inflicted with campaign aides reporting she should have been more forthcoming about her pneumonia. for the first time, hillary clinton addressing her health care, calling in to cnn, clinton said she should have followed her docker to's advice to rest for five days after being diagnosed with pneumonia. >> like a lot of people, i just thought i could keep going forward and power through it and obviously that didn't work out as well. >> reporter: clinton says she never lost consciousness and felt better getting inside the air conditioned van. >> i feel dizzy and i did lose my balance for a minute. once i got in, once i could sit down, once i could cool off, once i had some water, i immediately started feeling

going after sector clinton's health but he is once again taking his rival to task for labeling half his supporters as "deplorable." nbc's katy tur is at trump tower with that part of the story. >> reporter: good morning. the trump campaign is trying to catch lightning in a bottle after hillary clinton handed him a tailor-made attack line telling a private audience that donald trump's supporters were, quote, a basket of deplorables, as you said. now those supporters are calling her out. in asheville, north carolina monday night, donald trump tried to turn the tables on hillary clinton. allowing his supporters to shame her for him. >> do i look deplorable? >> after all the horrible scandals that hillary clinton's been involved in, she has the gall to call us deplorable. unbelievable. >> reporter: clinton's insult came friday night at a private fund-raiser in new york. >> what i call the basket of deplorables. >> they're racist, sexist,

homophobic, xenophobic. islamphobic. >> reporter: trump painted his rival as out of touch. now his campaign is fund-raising off the comment and quickly releasing this new ad. >> people like you, you, and you -- deplorable. >> reporter: it all comes amid the latest instance of violence at a trump rally. monday night a protester roughed up by a trump supporter. the incident taking place shortly after running mate mike pence was asked on cnn about clinton's deplorables comment and whether it applies to white nationalists like david duke. >> i'm not in the name calling business, wolf. you know me better than that. >> reporter: pence later clarifying on fox news. >> they wanted me to start using terms that hillary uses. you've known me a long time. i'm not a name caller. i don't play that game. but we have denounced david duke repeatedly. we'll continue to do that again. >> reporter: tonight outside of philadelphia, donald trump is

expected to give another policy speech, this one focused on a child care tax deduction. joining him -- his daughter, ivanka. willie, back to you. >> katy tur in new york, thanks. nicolle wallace and steve kornacki, good morning to you. do you feel that hillary clinton has successful put this health issue behind her? >> i think people will still have ongoing questions about her health. you've covered campaigns. it's grueling and if you were really sick, you could not keep up her schedule. but i think she will continue to have to answer questions about how they handle crises. it takes them too long to get to the truth. and a republican who planned to vote for hillary clinton called me yesterday and said, good god, she's only going to be the politician to lose because of a cough. >> steve, to that point, david axlerod, obviously former senior advisor to president obama and no fan of donald trump tweeted out about hillary clinton yesterday saying, she has an ult

h unhealthy penchant for privacy. this coming from a democrat who supports hillary clinton. is this an ongoing problem for her going forward? >> hillary clinton, bill clinton as well, going back to the 1990s. go back to 1996 when bill clinton was running for re-election. one of the issues in that campaign was, will bill clinton release his health records. bob dole, his opponent, challenged bill clinton to do that. i think there would otherwise be a lot of sympathy for hillary clinton just for having to deal with a health issue like that, powering through a weekend like that. but at the same time the headlines raise that question of transparency and it reinforces what's been her biggest negative for years now -- honesty and trustworthiness. >> you might say the health headlines aren't good but in some ways it actually overtook this issue of her comment on friday night where she call half of trump supporters deplorable. now is this a larger, longer term problem for hillary? >> the road to the white house does not wind its way towards

attacking someone's supporters. she gave a speech ten days before she made that -- i think this is what she thinks of the segment of the trump base that we've all learned this new word, the alt-right, that sort of legitimatizes white supremacy. she's made a more focused case, but lurping inlumping in half supporters, yesterday trump did a smart thing. he put americans on stage, americans who did not look deplorable at all. >> david, yesterday donald trump was arguing against hillary clinton that she has disdain for a large population of the voters. he came out yesterday in a parallel universe moment and said, i wish we could just talk about policy. i want to talk about policy. she's busy being negative and attacking americans. >> she's giving him a way to respond to this on a subject where he otherwise i think would be boxed in. if you look at the polling on this, 60% of all americans think

that donald trump is racially biased, think he has biased views towards women. if hillary clinton just took that on, he would be in a tough place in terms of responding. but when you branch out and bring in a big chunk of his supporters like that, you invite him to do what he did last night, to put people up on the stage, every day people, and say, is this who you are attacking, hillary clinton? that's a different fight for her. >> she did walk it back saying she didn't mean half of his supporters. thank you both so much. coming up, fox news anchor bill o'reilly will be here to chew on some of the political issues of the day. clinton's health and also some of the recent headlines at his own network. meanwhile, there are new developments this morning in that fire that was deliberately set at a florida mosque once attended by the pulse nightclub shooter. police describing it as a possible hate crime as investigators search for a suspect. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. pierce, florida with more. >> reporter: good morning, willie. there are some solid clues that

have authorities hopeful that they may make an arrest soon. among their strongettes evidence, a man seen running from the fire moments after it started, all captured on a security camera. investigators are examining this surveillance video frame by frame first showing a motorcycle drive up, then a man runs from the area. authorities say the bright light behind him is flames from the mosque. >> the male was shaking his hand. we're not sure, but it is possible that the male sustained burns on that hand. >> quick 12 respond priority one commercial structure fire. >> reporter: firefighters were on the scene within minutes, but much of the building was already engulfed. this morning, arson investigators and members of the muslim community are looking for clues in the ashes of the burned-out mosque. they say it is probably no coincidence it was torched late sunday night. >> i mean this happened on the anniversary of 9/11. >> reporter: and believe it may have been targeted because it is the same mosque where omar

mateen once prayed. the man who gunned down more than 100 people at the pulse nightclub in orlando. >> omar mateen probably went to walmart more than he went to the mosque here. if something happens at that walmart, people going to say, they deserve it, they had something to do with it? >> reporter: an imam at a nearby mosque says muslims here have been part of the fabric of the community for nearly 50 years. >> i am in shock of what happened. ier in expected that would happen in a maul community like that. >> do you feel safe? >> as safe as one could feel under the given circumstances. >> reporter: the front here doesn't show much damage but around the back the mosque leadership estimates the damage at more than $50,000. they set up a launchgood.com page and have already raised $11,000. they say they plan to rebuild. >> kerry sanders, thanks. now to the growing tension between the u.s. and north korea. this morning the u.s. flew two nuclear capable bombers over

south korea. this is a show of force against the north. it comes just days after north korea's fifth nuclear test. the b-1 bombers were escorted by u.s. and south korean jets. u.s. army general vincent brooks says, "the united states has an unshakeable commitment to defend allies in the region and will take necessary steps to do so." wells fargo under fire against again this morning. the banking giant was just hit with a record fine for opening millions of accounts without customer consent. now the executive who oversaw that unit is retiring with a reported $125 million payout. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest on this one. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. last week we heard about the largest fine ever imposed by the consumer financial protection bureau against the bank. now new questions are being raised about whether wells fargo executives will facing any consequences. this morning the world's biggest bank is sparking more outrage. the wells fargo executive in charge of the division where

employees opened more than 2 million unauthorized accounts is retiring at the end of the year. but "fortune" reports that according to financial disclosure documents, she's leaving with a payout of more than $124 million in stocks, options and shares. >> by no means is this a small retirement package. this is one of the largest for a senior executive that i've seen in my career. >> reporter: in july, the bank's ceo describes her as one of the most valuable wells fargo leaders, a standard bearer of our culture, a champion for our customers, and a role model for responsible, principled and inclusive leadership. last week wells fargo agreed to pay $185 million in fines over the fake accounts. the bank saying it has fired more than 5,300 employees over the last five years for their involvement in the scam. to meet sales goals some former employees say they were pressured to sell account add-ones to customers, like this

man. >> at one time i had 15 accounts at once. it was just very frustrating. these are accounts i never opened. >> reporter: a wells fargo spokesperson says she made a personal decision to retire after 27 years with the, company but would not comment on her compensation. people voicing their disbelief online asking, have you no shame or conscience? and is there even justice at all? the spokesperson asked that the unauthorized accounts were identified by the company's own internal controls and that once the bank's leaders were aware of the behavior, they terminated team members responsible and worked to strengthen oversight. "we believe the changes we have made have strengthened wells fargo and will help ensure this behavior doesn't happen in the future." we were not able to immediately reach the retiring executive for comment. wells fargo has agreed to pay its customers $5 million in restitution. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. we should point out, the ceo of wells fargo will be jim cramer's guest on ""mad money"" tonight

at 6:00 eastern on cnbc. now to a big move from the ncaa. the ncaa is pulling seven championship events out of north carolina during the 2016-2017 school year, that includes ncaa tournament basketball games. march madness games that were scheduled for greensboro, north carolina. the ncaa has not announced where those events will be moved to. north carolina's controversial house bill 2 restricts transgender bathroom access and limits antidiscrimination protections to the lgbt community. in july, the nba pulled the 2017 all-star games out of charlotte. take a look at this dash cam video of a frightening school bus fire monday afternoon in college park, maryland. fire officials say the driver safely escorted all 20 children from the bus before it was fully ungefl ungulfed in flames. driver told a witness, i'm a mom with two kids. it was my job to saving them.

everything we wore which meant 60 to 70 costumes a week. >> a week! that's incredible. >> you add that up with, average, 65 a week, okay, 11 years, 276 shows, that's over 17,000 costumes he designed. >> it's incredible. i'm glad you did the calculation there because i was told there would be no math. speaking of another number, you watched the bulk of 276 shows. >> actually, i didn't watch them all the way through. i fast forwarded through a lot of the sketches that i remembered, and then the musical numbers i fast forwarded through. but i wanted to jog my memory to see if there were some that i'd forgotten or that -- and there were a few that i'd -- quite a few that i had forgotten and some i would say, that's really funny. then another one i would say, that's not so funny. but it was enjoyable to go back and see how we change, how we grew. >> it's such an incredible run. i think they had 30 million

viewers. it's just incredible to think about that. why did you want to write the book and kind of walk down memory lane? >> well, the past few years i've been getting requests from other writers who said, we would love to write about your show and can we interview you and talk about it. i figure, well, i'm a writer, with i should write it because i'm the one who was really there. you know. so i decided i would do it. >> there's so much love in this book. it is not one of those dishy tell-alls where you're dishing the dirt, although there is a fun story about the time you had to fire harvey korman. what happened? >> well, he was -- harvey was wonderful. there was no question about it. but sometimes he'd be in a mood. but we could always kid him out of it. there would be no problem. he could change on a dime, like that. but then this one day we were rehearsing and he was not a happy camper and he was a little snappy with our guests, which i

thought -- you can get that way with me because i know you and it is okay, but not with the guests. so that night after the show, i went in to his dressing room. i said why were you doing -- he said, well, i'm just not happy here. i said, okay, don't come back. >> boom! >> he said what? i said, well, if you're unhappy -- but you can't talk to our guests that way and you can't bring your unhappiness to work. finally, he backtracked and he said, well, okay. i said do you want a reprieve? he said yes. i said, okay. this was friday. i said monday when we start next week though, when i see you monday morning, i want you to whistle and skip down the hallway at cbs. and so that monday, i'm walking towards the elevator by ow our rehearsal hall. it enop.ed harvey came out, we kind of looked at each other like that, and he started whistling and

hero/traitor. did you have preconceived notions about him? >> the truth is when oliver stone, filmmaker, first offered me the job -- well, first i was just excited and flattered. such a fan. he's made "jfk" and "born on the fourth of july" and "platoon" and "wall street" and so many great movies. but my first thought was edward snowden, i know i recognized the name but what exexactly did he do? i actually had some learning to do. >> you as part of your preparation were able to go to moscow and meet with ed snowden. what was that meeting like and what were you trying to learn from that meeting? >> well, i sat with him in an office. him as well as his long-time girlfrie girlfriend, lindsey mills. he is always frying to take the attention off of himself personally and put it on the issues that he raises, which is something that i admire about him. but, because i'm an actor, i'm

about to play him in a movie, obviously i am focused on him personally and those little human details of how he walks or how he talks or how he would shake my hand and things like that. . that was all really valuable for me. >> after you did your research you came to the conclusion he had done something good for the country, i take it. did your idea about him change at all as you went through the process and learned more around got to know him a little bit? is. >> yeah. it is funny, you google him and you get all these contrary opinions. a lot of them are really simple. what i found was, it's not a simple story. there's -- obviously he did break the law and he admits that he broke the law. but then there's examples of people who break the law who aren't necessarily doing the wrong thing like one example i thought of is, rosa parks. you know? back in her day, it was illegal where she lived for a black person to sit on the front of the bus and she was told to go sit on the back of the but and she refused. at that time that was breaking the law and half the country thought she was a criminal. but we look back and now we're

grateful that she broke that law. >> let's talk about your preparation. because one of the things i really noticed is, even in that clip, your voice. >> yeah. >> you really nailed the voice. he has kind of a distinctive deep voice. but it is not one that everyone knows. so as an actor to make that choice, that's a lot to take on. i'm going to do this movie in a voice that is not familiar to me. why did you want to do it, and was that an intimidating thing to take on? >> i mean, for me, a lot of my favorite actors are the ones who kind of disappear in to their character. you don't see the actor on the screen. you see the character that they're playing. the character that i was playing was this guy. you're right, not everyone has seen his interviews or the documentaries about him. >> were you listening to them non-stop? >> i put them in my earphones on repeat. i slept with them. i just listened and listened. >> he's got asylum in russia. he had it extended a kunl of years ago. he'd like to come home. do you think he ever gets that chance? >> you know, i don't know.

but the little bit that i've gotten to know him, i think what he cares about more than his own personal life -- i mean that's clear, he risked his life to do what he did -- is just the fact that we're having this conversation right now about government accountability, about mass surveillance. what he's always said is, mass surveillance might be right, it might be wrong, but it is a conversation that we should be having as the people. that's kind of what makes america great, we are a democracy and we all get to kind of have these discussions. so i think he's glad that the conversation has begun. >> a lot of people talking about this movie. a lot of people will go to see it on friday. thanks so much.
