presidential candidate bernie sanders is stuffing for a fellow democrat katy mcginty. she's running against incumbent republican pat toomey. republicans going to the afm. investigators have been tracking outside influences on pennsylvania's hotly contested race for u.s. senate. tonight our investigative reporter george spencer talks to the state donors -- including famous business releaders and a former owner of the philadelphia eagles. >> pat toomey started his career as an investment banker. >> reporter: in the race between pat toomey democratic nominee katy mcginty. >> but the nbc 10 investigators

found individual donations are also piling up. as of the last filing date at the end of june, both campaigns had raised more money from out of state donors than from donors in the state they're campaigning to represent. >> these are people who are interested in central issues in the campaign or central constituencies these candidates represent. >> reporter: both toomey and mcginty received the most out of state donations from the most atm state of new york, morn half a million dollars east. followed by california where mcginty received 800 -- including maximum done faces from barbara lee, an expert on women in politics and a senior advisor in the state department and a former ambassador.

toomey pulled in significant amounts from florida, texas and illinois. including maximum donations from miami's norman bremn, former owner of the philadelphia eagles and billionaire chicago investor sam zell. we asked the candidates if so much out of state money forces them to focus on interests beyond pennsylvania. >> i don't think so, i think that reflects the fact that everybody understands that control of the senate could be determined by the outcome of this race. >> what i'm fighting for comes from who i am and my roots growing up in philadelphia and growing up in a working family. >> reporter: all told more than 11,000 individual donors outside of pennsylvania have powered millions of dollars into our race. but there's a con vengeanceal wisdom about voter turnout in
