>> the violence doesn't end there on sansom street. several minutes of gunfire targeting innocent people in a bar, a car, even a university of pennsylvania officer. >> we got another officer down. >> a total of six people shot. what was the motive? we've learned the shooter left a rambling note about his hatred of law enforcement. tonight nbc 10 is digging into the suspect's criminal past. plus the one woman killed in the ambush. good evening, i'm george spencer, we have learned three new details in just the past few hours about the shooting rampage in west philadelphia. tonight the police commissioner says it is a miracle that sergeant sylvia young is alive. and this is new video of the suspect, nicholas glenn. that's his photo there. he has a significant criminal past and is well known to the police department. the letter he left behind had

the title "doomed." and police are still trying to get in touch with the family of the woman who was killed. we have team coverage of the shooting rampage. nbc 10's deanna durant spent the day in the neighborhood learning about the suspect, and nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has been uncovering more about the victims at the hospital. we start with deanna, who just found brand new video of the suspect during the crime. >> yeah, george, we'll tell but the video in a minute. first where i'm standing, sergeant young was shot about halfway down the block. that was the first scene of the shooting, then we're told that nicholas glenn targeted people at this bar here. and then took off down sansom street, heading east into the city. that's where we found video of him just minutes before his fatal shootout with police. he's not runninging, instead walking. the video you see here is between shootings, according to investigative sources, after the shooting of sergeant young and before 25-year-old nicholas

glenn meets up with police in an alley. near 48th and walnut. police sources say glenn tossed a magazine along sansom street and reloaded his weapon. then police swarm the area and a fatal shootout happens in an alley. glenn injures another officer before he is killed. >> how many shots did you hear? >> 27. >> you heard the first shot. you heard somebody shooting at somebody. then you heard somebody shooting back. and then you know you can tell that somebody was running. >> witnesses near maxim's level lounge say they were near the window when the shots rang out. they've never heard of nicholas glenn but police have. he has a lengthy criminal record, one source says more than a dozen arrests. and police say a letter found on glenn. >> it's rambling. it would be very difficult to glean anything from that. it's more about himself than it is about who he wanted to harm.

>> police say glenn wrote he was angry at police and probation officers. >> the envelope was entitled "doomed." he was referring to i guess anybody who was going to be in his path. last night. >> and investigators say they find no connection between glenn and any of his alleged victims. they also say that a relative led them to a place here in west philadelphia they believe he was last staying. they say aside from finding more ammunition inside, that dwelling, that they didn't find much else that would lead them as to his motive for his actions last night. reporting live in west philadelphia, deanna durant, nbc 10 news. nbc 10 broke news of the rampage as it happened. on nbc 10 at 11:00 last night. tonight, we have the chilling dispatch calls as the chaos played out. here's a look at the timeline of events. >> it started with a call at 11:19 p.m. for an officer down. her cruiser under fire. >> help me, please!

>> officers in that immediate area actually hear that gunshot, those gunshots. they respond, they see the male in question. who just fired upon the sergeant. they went in pursuit of him. >> down sansom street from 52nd to 51st. >> watch cross-fire. >> extreme caution. >> here the gunman stops and opens fire into the maximum level lounge. he shot a security guard in the leg, grabbed a woman and used her as a shield before he shot her as well. >> coming from everywhere down here. >> the pursuit continues down sansom to 49th, where the suspect randomly fires into a car. >> we got somebody shot in a car. >> one of the people inside the car, a woman, died. the trail of gunfire and bloodshed ended in an alleyway about a block away, where university of pennsylvania police officer eddie miller confronteded gunman. >> we got another officer down. >> he was the last person to take a bullet in the deadly shooting rampage.

>> he is down. he's in custody. >> in fact, that suspect was killed. besides targeting police, he also shot several men and women at random. five people are in the hospital tonight, recovering. the injured include sergeant sylvia young, university of pennsylvania officer ed miller. a security guard, a woman in the bar, and then another man and woman. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins us live from penn presbyterian medical center, where all of the victims are tonight. randy? >> and those five surviving victims, police tell us, are expected to pull through. the young woman, just 25 years old, did die from her injuries. police say she was shot multiple times in the chest. police are telling us the victims are still here inside the emergency room. while the gunman, armed with a .9-millimeter seemingly shooting civilians at random.

the crime scene stretched entire city blocks. six people shot, including two cops. police say the bloodshed began when the gunman ambushed sergeant sylvia young. >> shots fired. >> firing 18 times as she sat in her patrol car. >> fortunately, at least one or two were lodged in her ballistic vest. she took some rounds through the arm. >> police commissioner richard ross visited her and the other victims at the hospital. >> she's in good spirits. given what she's been through. actually amazing. she was actually sitting up, they were changing some of her bandages. >> university of pennsylvania officer eddie miller was also hit as he tried to catch the suspect. the rampage continued with a gunman firing outside a local bar. >> he then goes down to that bar and he fires five times into the bar. >> a security guard here was wounded and a woman was shot in the leg. the final victims, a young couple just sitting inside their car, the young man seriously

injured. police say his 25-year-old girlfriend was killed. >> a particularly tragic thing, hearts and our prayers go out to her family in particular. >> police say their officers stopped a deadly rampage of violent night in west philly, innocent civilians and cops targeted at random. >> gun violence across this nation is absolutely out of control. this should not happen. in this country. it's just the bottom line. >> the university of pennsylvania police department sending out a tweet today thanking the doctors and the staff here at penn presbyterian hospital. at this point the identities of the civilian victims have not been released, for now, live at penn presbyterian, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> nbc 10 continues to track the suspect's past and the victims' conditions at the hospital. we have several reporters working this story. stay with nbc 10 on air and on

social media for the latest updates on the shooting rampage. now to breaking news at the jersey shore, a pipe bomb exploded just moments before the start of a u.s. marines charity run. >> all right i got some type of explosion. we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. >> jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg joins us live from seaside park where he just got an update on the situation. ted? >> george, the local police chief and the fbi just wrapped up a news conference within the past few minutes, they say this is still a very, very active investigation. you can see we still have a very heavy law enforcement presence in town. at this hour, authorities have not made any arrests. they are not talking about a possible motive. we can tell you no one was hurt. but the outcome could have been tragic, authorities say. if that big event here this

morning had not been delayed. >> i heard it go off, at first i thought it was a gunshot. >> but it was actually an explosion inside this trash can right along the route of a marine corp charity run in seaside park. >> the can was in tatters and white smoke was pouring off. >> it shook the bed and it really was loud. >> we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. >> thousands of people were waiting for the annual semper phi 5-k run to start when a pipe blom blew up this morning. sky force 10 was overhead as a police robot examined the trash can where sources say additional undetonated devices were also found. several blocks surrounding the blast site were quickly evacuated. the run canceled. retired marine ephraim wilson was supposed to take part. >> it's disheartening that

anything like that would happen. >> we want to support them and to do this was awful. just a terrible, terrible act. >> we're working together to conduct a thorough investigation to find out who is responsible at this time. we're out there conducting interviews and securing evidence. and we're making sure that there's no stone left unturned. >> the start of the run had been delayed by registration issues so no one was near the trash can when the device exploded. >> it was a big thing was that delay helped tremendously in terms of what could have been injuries and other issues. >> now people who were evacuated from their homes are being allowed to return at this hour. however about 30 blocks of ocean avenue remain closed for the ongoing investigation. the beach here in seaside park is also shut down. a local councilwoman told me she is hopeful that the beach will be able to be reopened tomorrow. live in seaside park, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news.

hartnet was shot in an unprovoked attack, not far from last night's shooting rampage. hartnet was on patrol, sitting inside his cruiser when a gunman shot him. he survived that attack and the suspect is now in jail. meanwhile, a show of gratitude and support from a local police force for the son of a fallen police officer from texas. 13-year-old tyler martin was invited to lunch today at the vorheis police department, the department dedicated their summer junior police academy to the slain teen's father. officer richard martin killed in the line of duty last year. martin also took part in a canine demonstration with young people who devoted their hard work this summer, to his father. then after the visit, tyler headed over to citizens bank park where he met some of the phillies and hung out down there on the field as the team took batting practice. >> now your nbc 10 first alert

weather. cloudy skies will continue tonight for the most part, we should stay dry as temperatures drop into the lower 70s overnight we topped out at 83 degrees in philadelphia. the high tempt. we're right now currently at 81, 79 in allentown, 78 in vineland. the cool spot, coatesville, 75 and 75 in dover. so temperatures dropping, but not very quickly. we're keeping a close eye on the west we have a cold front that is poised to move in tomorrow, sunday, sunday night into monday morning. what we can see the leading edge of this cold front right here. and we're wondering where are all the clouds coming from? well from the west. as this system is just very slowly chugging along. right now bringing some strong rain and some thunderstorms to extreme northwestern pennsylvania, parts of erie, that's what we're watching for. our area tomorrow afternoon. we are looking for rain to come into the area tomorrow

afternoon. some of the rain has the potential overnight sunday night into monday morning, to become a bit heavy. down here in the south we've got this tropical depression julia. not posing a main threat for us, right now sitting about 250 miles southeast off the carolina coast. however, some of the moisture from this system could sneak up the coast, and add to our rainfall. sunday night into early monday morning. so some of the rain that's moving into our area by monday morning could be pockets of heavy rainfall. we'll take you hour by hour and show you what we can expect overnight tonight. north and west still getting some of the shower activity moving in maybe a spritz or two in parts of the lehigh valley. that's overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. we see this running through central pennsylvania. heavy rainfall. for our wake up tomorrow in philadelphia, we should be dry with cloud cover. it isn't until sunday afternoon that we get the showers on and off and as we move through,
