congressman says rahami contacted him from pakistan two years ago, trying to get his pregnant wife a visa. and tonight president obama is praising police for their work, saying he's spoken to some of the officers involved in the investigation. >> nbc10 has been all over this story from the moment it broke, and tonight nbc10's brandon hudson is live in linden, new jersey, where the manhattan came -- manhunt came to an end. >> there are a few officers here on scene but federal investigators are done for the evening. police reopened some of these streets to traffic, but the street where police had that shoot-out with terror suspect ahmad rahami is still closed. it's been a long day for investigators and people living in this linden community. this all started with a store owner saw rahami leaning next to his business. late into the evening, our nbc10 camera got a closer look at the work of fbi and local police department in linden.

bags of evidence collected where police discovered new york, new jersey bombing suspect ahmad ra hammy. it began when harry baines said he first saw rahami leaning against the door of his business. >> he looked at me, and he said, oh, i'm sorry. i'll move to the side. >> baines told our sister station nbc 4 new york rahami didn't appear suspicious. no indication of the man authorities say is responsible for the bombs exploding in seaside park, the chelsea section of new york city, and just minutes away from linden in elizabeth. >> then i saw him. he looked like tired and exhausted. >> reporter: but then he saw a photo of the suspect and called police. moments later, police confronted rahami. >> pulled a gun from the left side, and he just started shooting. >> reporter: that's when police swarmed the scene. >> i heard gunshots. i heard pop, pop, pop. >> more than a firecracker. >> reporter: police say rahami shot two linden police officers

before running away. one was hit in the chest but wore a vest. the other was grazed in the head. both have non-life-threatening injuries. we're told the fbi will return out here bright and early tomorrow morning, but it is not expected to impact traffic of people going to work and going to school. i spoke to one woman who said it won't impact her commute to work because she can just walk to the train stop, which is right down the street. reporting live in linden, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. >> rahami has been in the u.s. since he was a boy. he came with his family from afghanistan in 1995. >> government officials tell nbc news the family was granted asylum in 2011. and back in 2014, rahami contacted local officials to try to get his pregnant wife in pakistan a visa. the request was eventually granted. a congressman contacted the fbi about his office's encounter earlier today before rahami was arrested. earlier tonight, the suspect's

father spoke exclusively to nbc news. >> i'm not sure what's going on. >> you're not sure? >> i'm not sure what's happening exactly. but i think so. it's very hard right now to talk, okay? >> reporter: u.s. intelligence officials tell nbc news ahmad, his father, and brother traveled to pakistan and afghanistan multiple times over the last decade. this photo is said to be from a trip there three years ago. >> the bombing stretched from new york city to the jersey shore. they began saturday morning in seaside park, where a bomb exploded in a trash can. it happened right before a 5k charity race for marines. no one was injured. but it was a different story on saturday night in manhattan's chelsea neighborhood. 29 people were injured when a bomb went off there. the next morning, a police robot detonated a pipe bomb near a train station in elizabeth, new jersey. and today it all came to an end in linden when police arrested ahmad kahn rahami after a shoot-out. and in the next few minutes, we

will show you the clues officers followed helping them track down their suspect in just 48 hours. but now we move to an update that is new at 11:00. for the very first time we are hearing from a police officer injured in a shooting rampage on philly streets. >> we're going to show you some surveillance video that shows officer ed miller being shot on friday night. he says it's an experience he'd like to forget. nbc10's keith jones reports. >> reporter: there's an eagles game on, but tonight was about one man. once a sergeant, then an officer, and now a hero. >> i'm happy, very happy. >> reporter: fighting tears after fighting a criminal. this was officer ed miller friday night moments after being shot twice, calling for backup, chasing the gunman. a nightmare reality that could happen to anyone in blue. >> what does it feel like in the moment when it does? >> at that time, it was just about subduing the threat and protecting the public. that's it.

>> reporter: and that's what the 35-year veteran of the force did. now he walks with a limp and crutches. he showed us his gunshot wounds, one to his right hip, another to his ankle. his right arm grazed. but this officer says he's lucky, and he is not hanging it up. >> it's in my blood. i'll be back. i'll be back as soon as i can. >> reporter: because as he puts it, it's about protecting people. one woman was killed in the shooting. four others wounded during a spree spanding four blocks in west philly at the hands of this man, nicholas glenn. skyforce10 was overhead as officers swarmed him in an alley and shot him dead, thanks in part to officer ed miller putting his life on the line when everything mattered. >> ed didn't care who was being attacked. he didn't care the race. he didn't care about any of that. he wanted to protect people, and he did a darn good job of doing that, and thank god he's here. >> reporter: and all proceeds tonight benefit officer miller along with philadelphia police

sergeant sylvia who was also wounded and recovered from her injuries. keith jones, nbc10 news. tonight we are learning more about the suspect behind this weekend's shooting rampage. police sources say nicholas glenn left a rambling note behind in which he referred to himself in the third person as "solo tattoo tears." glenn had a lengthy criminal history. he had been to jail at least once a year all of his adult life. but during his last day, he was sent to punitive segregation tlo three times. it was that isolation his cousin says contributed to a suicide attempt last year. >> he came home. he was like out of it, like he tried to commit suicide. >> he was a different guy? >> yeah. >> in april of this year, glenn's supervised probation was extended again with an order that he receive a mental health evaluation. family members believe he snapped friday night.

♪ eagles players making a statement tonight during the national anthem. all the birds stood, but several players did so while also raising their fists. >> csn's ron burke is here with a look at how eagles fans are reacting. >> jacqueline, in an interview back on friday, malcolm jenkins said he plans to follow colin kaepernick and make a symbolic statement. tonight he and a couple teammates followed through on that promise. steven means, malcolm jenkins and brooks each raise the a fist, the latest in a series of demonstrations by nfl players during the anthem in an effort to raise awareness about social injustice in america. after watching it, nbc10 news talked to eagles fans for their thoughts on those raised fists. >> i don't think they should not protest, but i don't think during the national anthem is the forum to make their protest.

>> more power to them. i think it's great. why not? show the respect? >> you don't think it's inappropriate? >> why would it be inappropriate? they're standing, and they're representing. so it's part of history as well. >> reporter: speaking to the media on saturday, jenkins said, quote, the goal is not to divide people, but the goal is also not to beat around the bush, end quote. one eagles fan saw an historic parallel to the players' gesture tonight. >> it reminded me of the gruys n the olympics. not trying to defy anybody but just solidarity with the movement. >> jenkins said he waited a week to make any kind of symbolic statement because he did not want to disrupt ceremonies recognizing the anniversary of the september 11th terrorist attacks, especially with first responders on the field at that time. jim. >> ron, thank you. now to decision 2016 and the push for pennsylvania. hillary clinton made her pitch to young voters at temple university today. the democratic nominee focused

on issues that millennials care about like health care and student debt. clinton also discussed the bombing scares in new york and new jersey. she praised first responders for their actions and mentioned that a suspect had been taken into custody. >> we must remain vigilant. this is a fast-moving situation and a sobering reminder that we need steady leadership in a dangerous world. >> donald trump took aim at clinton when he talked about this weekend's attacks at a rally near fort myers, florida, today. he saw law enforcement should start profiling and he blamed the bomb scares on clinton and president obama's immigration policies. >> she is not the right person to solve a problem that largely her and obama gave us. that obama gave us. >> trump will be back in our area on thursday for a rally in delaware county. nbc10 digital reporters

were also shot. they're all expected to survive. the baby was not injured. police took a man with a semiautomatic weapon into custody. another major terror investigation under way tonight in minnesota. a rampage that left nine injured inside a shopping mall over the weekend. the attacker's been identified now as 22-year-old dahir adan. while adan is reportedly an isis sympathizer, authorities in minnesota say they've found no evidence so far that the terror group played a direct role in the incident. the somali-american immigrant is said to have referenced allah as he began stabbing eight men, one woman, and a 15-year-old girl saturday. one of the victims says he begged for his life as the attacker stabbed him in the back and then went after his pregnant girlfriend. >> i ran after him screaming don't touch her. she's pregnant. and from me screaming, he kind of turned around to look at me as i screamed that and slightly missed her. >> the victim's girlfriend managed to escape with a minor scratch to her neck. now back to our top story.

bombs in new york and two new jersey counties. the weekend of violence and then an arrest. tonight we're taking a look at the timeline. how investigators found their suspect in just 48 hours. 9:30 saturday morning, a pipe bomb goes off in seaside park, new jersey, right along the course for a 5k charity race. >> i got some type of explosion. we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. >> no one was injured, likely because the race had been delayed, preventing runners from passing by. that bomb still intact is rushed to the fbi crime lab in washington. 8:30 p.m. a bomb goes off in new york city's chelsea neighborhood. 29 people are injured. at 10:00 p.m., an unexploded pressure cooker bomb is found and also sent to the fbi lab, where a finger print is found on it. a search of databases allegedly tracks it to ahmad rahami. both unexploded devices are

wired to cellular flip phones acting as timers. investigators say those phones yield nor clues pointing to rahami, and both phones were bought in the same new jersey discount store last year. surveillance video shows a man who appears to be rahami in both areas where bombs were planted in new york. 8:30 sunday night, a bomb is found never the elizabeth, new jersey train station. 6:00 this morning, heavily armed agents conferred on a fried chicken shop in elizabeth, not far from the last bomb site. 7:30 this morning, the photo of the man authorities are searching for is released. suspect ahmad kahn rahami. >> we have directly linked rahami to devices from new york and from saturday in new jersey. >> at 11:15 this morning after a shoot-out with police, rahami is captured in linden, new jersey. a philadelphia fbi spokesman says he's not surprised at all with how quickly the suspect was captured. >> once they were able to get the forensic evidence to

identify him, you know, and get the picture out, that was what was key, the tips that came in. able to identify him and then locate him. >> you can count on nbc10 for continuing coverage on the bombing arrest. tap the nbc10 app for a closer look at the timeline of this investigation. you can also hear from more people who knew the suspect before the violence. major honor for civil rights icon congressman john lewis. tonight he was presented with the liberty medal at the national constitution center. ed rendell and philadelphia mayor jim kenney were among those who paid tribute to the congressman. it comes on the 150th anniversary of the reconstruction amendments. these were created in an effort to give african-americans equality. congressman lewis is the only surviving big six leader of the civil rights movement. he was injured when he helped lead the bloody sunday mar in selma, alabama, back in 1965. >> i never tried to win any

award. my plan wasn't to seek fame or fortune. all i wanted to do is to help out, to do what i could to help make this country and the world community a little bit better. >> past liberty medal honorees including the daily llama, nelson mandela and muhammud ali. some places are going to get some more rain during the next couple of days. we've got cloudy skies everywhere now. most of the rain has moved offshore, but that doesn't mean it's the end of it. look at the back edge of the clouds here. it's not really moving, and that means that some of this moisture from the south is going to be able to come right back during the day tomorrow. so just because it's dry now doesn't mean it's going to stay dry, especially when we're talking about some of these places at the jersey shore that saw tremendous amounts of rain

during the day today. we had reports on long beach island of up to 4 1/2 inches. we had that rain today we really needed, and it's only the second day in a whole month that we've had any. we had the first, and then today, and we may not get any for the rest of this week and even next weekend. so we're going to be needing some more rain before too long. but here we go. as we go through the night tonight and tomorrow morning, there could be some more rain right along the shore and in southern delaware. some of it even on the heavier side while areas up to the north and west see sunshine. so lehigh valley, poconos, burkes county. you're going to see sunshine, temperatures in the 80s while it's going to be the mid-70s farther to the south with some rain the next couple of days. here's what we're talking about. generally just cloudy skies in philadelphia area, and then the farther south you go, the more rain there's going to be. so here we are at the jersey

shore. 74 at longport for the high. mid-80s and sunshine in the lehigh valley, dover getting some rain as well. over the next three days, we see this change here as soon as the sun comes out. temperatures start going way into the 80s. way above average, more like summertime temperatures. lehigh valley, three days in a row of that. but at the jersey shore, we may be seeing a couple more days of rain and temperatures staying in the 70s. quite a variation. that's why we do neighborhood weather. different weather in different neighborhoods. so we start with the clouds. it's 74. then the sun comes out. temperatures start going up, and we're talking about summertime warmth for thursday, friday, even into saturday. but look, that's not a misprint. it's 69 degrees on sunday, and then we get some chances of rain as we go into early next week. we'll be right back. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message.
