saying he is calling in the national guard and state troopers to help restore order. nbc's gabe gutierrez has all the overnight developments. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is the nascar hall of fame, one of the buildings damaged in the chaos. what started out as peaceful protests quickly spiraled out of control right in the heart of downtown charlotte. the governor now bringing in the national guard. overnight, a rampage in north carolina's largest city. demonstrators clashing with officers in riot gear for a second straight night. teargas used to push the crowd back, protesters tossing the n canisters back at police. the omni hotel forced to lock its guests inside. >> the protest started peacefully but demonstrators ramping up, a heavy police presence outside this hotel. >> reporter: a shot rings out. a protester down.

authorities say it was civilian gunfire, not police. t a wounded man rushed to the hospital in critical condition. throughout the night at least four police officers hurt. >> you are seeing a female officer who has been injured. she's being helped by paramedics in riot gear. she is unable to walk on her own. >> reporter: emotions full of anger. >> we got shots fired. >> reporter: this morning, this new photo apparently showing a gun on the ground next to scott, obtained from an eyewitness by charlotte station wcnc. a police source says it is genuine. police say scott was armed. some eyewitnesses say he wasn't. >> he exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. >> did you see any gun on him? >> i did not. no gun. it was a book. >> reporter: no book was found at the scene. police say scott failed to follow their commands. >> he stepped out posing a threat to the officers.

>> reporter: williams says he was no threat. >> i see him getting out the car, like the police told him to do. >> reporter: the officer who fired at scott identified as brentley vincent now on paid live as frustration boils over. >> why are you out here? >> because i need the police to stop killing us! stop killing us! >> reporter: several major businesses downtown expect to be closed today. just hours before this violent started, scott's widow released a statement calling for peaceful protests. police say she will review body cam footage and dash cam footage from the incident but it won't be released citing the ongoing investigation. the concern tonight, matt and savannah, is what happens on this third night. back to you. >> a lot of people on edge there. hillary clinton and donald trump are speaking out about the violence in charlotte. let's turn to nbc national correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning to you.

>> reporter: our now poll today is showing hillary clinton is fortified in her lead over donald trump. but north carolina a critical battleground here with trump and clinton, their responses to this event showing a real clear contrast between the candidates. donald trump in an interview set to air tonight on fox news making unusual pitch to african-american voters. endorsing nationwide stop and frisk policing to reduce violence in black communities, telling fox, "i would do stop and frisk. i think you have to. we did it in new york. it worked incredibly well. you have to be proactive and, you know, you really help people sort of change their mind automatically." but the controversial practice was ruled unconstitutional in new york. critics calling it racial profiling. in the wake of two fatal shootings of black men in charlotte and tulsa, trump and clinton are weighing in. >> i know i don't have all the answers. i don't know anyone who does.

but this is certain. too many people have lost their lives who shouldn't have. >> reporter: trump, speculating about the female police officers involved in the tulsa shooting. >> did she get scared? was she choking? what happened? but maybe people like that, people that choke, people that do that, maybe they can't be doing what they're doing. >> reporter: the real estate mogul appearing with the notorious boxing promoter don king at a black church in ohio. >> every white woman should cast their vote for donald trump, not for donald trump the man, but to knock out the system to help him, to get their rights, you know, to be able to deal with it. >> reporter: king also uttering a racial slur while introducing trump. >> if you are dancing and gliding and sliding [ bleep ] -- i mean negro. >> reporter: donald trump explaini ining his birther posi.

>> we just want to get on with the campaign. >> reporter: and bucking a report about his foundation. >> the foundation is there. i think it's been doing a good job. i think we put that to sleep by putting out that last report. >> reporter: it is clear deep divisions remain this morning. donald trump still trailing hillary clinton by wide margins among some key minority groups. new this morning, we have evidence that clinton leads among latino voters. our number has it at 71%-18% over donald trump. she also leads among african-american voters. you can see the spread there. 81%-7%. but there are also some significant differences in terms of voters' perceptions of the candidates. asked who has the knowledge and experience to handle the presidency? on that, voters give clinton a 37-point advantage. but trump holds the edge on who's viewed as more honest and

straightforward. matt, savannah, just four days until that first debate. a lot can still change. >> a lot of people are going to be watching that. peter alexander, thank you. let's get more on the state of the race. 47 days to go until election day. donald trump will spend his day at a national gas conference in pennsylvania this morning outlining his plan for energy use. >> hillary clinton is off the trail today but her daughter chelsea is attending events in michigan. if according to our latest poll, clinton holds a seven-point lead in her head-to-head match-up with trump. but if you factor in the green party candidates, that lead is down to one point. >> steve kornacki is here. people talking about the discussion in the battleground states. >> if donald trump is going to win this election simply put right now, i'll show you what it would look like. first of all, everything you see in red on this map, either all

the states that voted for in 2012. there are some challenges here like north carolina. you got to win all of those. then what you have in grey here, these were blue states. these were obama states. these are the best shot blue states for donald trump right now. let me show you what it means. start in ohio. if you average the polls tobl together in ohio, trump is actually ahead of hillary clinton. down in florida, big electoral battleground there, tied in the average poll. it is not a state trump's winning but it is a state where he can win. this is a bit of a surprise. you have a lot of talk from the trump people about pennsylvania but right now it is wisconsin that he's close. he's behind but he's within striking distance. closer than people expect. so again, he's going to have to make up some ground there but if he could get wisconsin, look how close he is starting to get leer. then check out maine. it is a little funny in the

colors. what's going on in maine, they do the vote by congressional district. in this rural congressional district of maine donald trump seems to be running away with it. if you give him that, look how close he is. iowa -- these are both states where he leads in the average. each one is worth six. if you give him iowa, he hits 270. he's at his number. if you give him nevada, he's over 270. here's one terrorist. say clinton takes nevada, trump 270, clinton 268. one final twist -- they also do the votes by congressional district in nebraska. hillary clinton has a chance at winning one of those districts. if that were to happen -- aye-yi-yi. i was saying 269-269. that hasn't happened since 1864.

>> steve, thank you. reminder -- the first presidential debate of the general election coming up on monday. will be moderated by "nbc nightly news" anchor lester holt. 9:00 eastern, 6:00 pacific, right here on nbc. major new developments this morning into the investigation into those bombing attacks here in new york and new jersey. the fbi trying to find two men who were seen with one of the suitcases carrying one of those devices. as we get a new look at surveillance video of one of the blasts. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has the latest. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the suspect ahmad rahami remains hospitalized after suffering several gunshot wounds. he hasn't been medically cleared to face a judge yet, this as the probe into his family deepens. this morning, the wife of bombing suspect ahmad rahami on her way back to the u.s., flying overnight from dubai, she was

accompanied by federal investigators. she is not considered a suspect, but law enforcement sources say a possible witness to the alleged crimes of her husband. new surveillance video shows the chaotic scene saturday in manhattan. the bomb on 23rd street exploding from inside a dumpster. a man in a wheelchair caught in the blast zone. others running for their lives. one person knocked to the ground before a man comes back to help. just four blocks away, rahami himself appears to be caught on tape, wheeling a suitcase down the steet. street. inside, police say this pressure cooker bomb that didn't go off. moments later authorities say two men came upon the suitcase, removing the bomb, leaving it behind before walking off with the bag. the unidentified men now sought by the fbi. >> what we are seeking to do is to identify those two individuals and to get that bag

back because it may have forensic evidence of value. >> have you talked to him at all? >> no. >> reporter: today rahami's family is also under the microscope. investigators say a relative took video of rahami lighting incendiary material in a backyard. a scorched lawn clearly visible. investigators say rahami's motivation for the attacks in new jersey and new york is coming in to focus. after a shoot-out with police, investigators say they found this bullet-pierced journal on rahami. the writings, some incoherent, are filled with anti-american sentiment. >> it is clear from this journal that mr. rahami was receiving inspiration from the isis spokesman. >> reporter: over the last several days, we have seen members of rahami's family return here to the family home. it's unclear if this is where his wife will come back to. this investigation clearly not over. matt, savannah? >> miguel almaguer, thanks.

now to capitol hill and that grilling fate of the ceo of the company that makes epipens. she says she will not drop the prices. nbc's tom costello has more on a pretty heated hearing. >> reporter: you may recall that under pressure, mylan pharmaceuticals recently said it would produce a generic version for $300. not $600. if that was meant to impress members of congress, the ceo was sorely mistaken. >> reporter: it is a rare witness who can unite both republicans and democrats in anger, but the ceo of the company that makes the epipen walked into a bipartisan firing line. >> you virtually have a monopoly and you've used it to your advantage. but, unfortunately, it's at the expense of people who need it. >> reporter: it didn't matter that heather bresch is the daughter of west virginia senator joe manchin and that only recently under pressure the

company promised a cheaper, generic epipen. >> by introducing a generic which truly is unprecedented. we cut the price in half. >> it's unprus deecedented to r the price by $500. >> reporter: demanding the answer how they could raise the price. mylan says the development costs and middlemen demanding a cut have pushed prices higher -- and it says it's given away 700,000 pens to schools across the country. but congress isn't buying it. >> what was your salary last year? >> about $18 million. >> about $18 million. sounds like you're doing pretty well on this. >> yet another drug company, mylan, has jacked up the price of a life saving product for no discernible reason. >> reporter: at least 11 states now have laws that require

schools to stock epinephrine, something that the company l lobbied hard for. now criminal investigations have been launched into the company's pricing policies. now to an nbc news exclusive interview. chuck todd sat down with iranian president hassan rowhani who is here in new york for the u.n. general assembly. they talked about the presidential race and the potential for change in u.s.-iranian relations under a new administration. >> translator: everything is dependent upon the conditions when we get to that point in time. in any fashion, if the future administration of the united states wishes to continue its animosity towards iran, then of course it will receive the appropriate response. but, if it wishes to bring an end to that animosity, and start

other injured during the latest round of demonstrations. north carolina's governor says the national guard is being brought in to assist local police. the pipeline in alabama shut down after a major leak was restarted late last night. the problem has led to a surge in gas prices and even shortages across the south. but, with the pipeline now re-opened, fuel supplies are expected to return to normal in a few days. and we have a new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll in the presidential race. hillary clinton holding a seven-point lead nationally over donald trump, 48%-41%. in today's campaign moment, could we finally see an end to the most hated feud of this campaign season, the one between donald trump and ted cruz? as you will recall, cruz was booed at the republican convention in july because he defiantly refused to endorse trump, memorably saying to the crowd, vote your conscience. now trump is backing one of cruz's big initiatives on capitol hill and cruz has

tweeted his gratitude. the warm exchange just the latest sign that a cruz endorsement of trump could -- could -- be in the works. now let us turn to this divorce battle between angelina jolie and brad pitt and bombshell new allegations. natalie is out in los angeles with more on this. natalie, good morning. >> good morning to you. overnight, unconfirmed reports by both tmz and "people" magazine that brad pitt is now under investigation for alleged child abuse by the los angeles police department and the l.a. child and family services. it comes after an incident on a private plane last wednesday. they separated last thursday, and then angelina filed for divorce on monday. as we hear more now from both sides this morning about what may have gone wrong in their relationship. >> reporter: three days after angelina filed for divorce from brad pitt, the couple who for 12 years graced the covers of magazines, now shared pubbly the end of their two-year marriage,

amid rumors of infidelity. there have been the divorce filing was triggered by an affair between pitt and a french star. the actress issued a firm denial in a statement saying she and her partner are expecting their second child, adding, i do very much wish that angelina and brad, both whom i deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment. pitt and jolie also deny infidelity rumors with both saying their six children are their priorities. >> they really are very concerned about how their kids are going to fare and they want to make sure their interests are looked after. there is no disagreement there. >> reporter: the colleague of the couple tells "access hollywood" that jolie, who is asking for full physical custody, wants the children to have a relationship with their father but there are no plans for visitation right now. according to "people" magazine's cover story on some newsstands today, a source from pitt's

inner circle, he begged her to press pause, not so they could recognize but so they could prepare their children for the mass upheaval about to come. >> both would agree the marriage was in trouble and they had been working on it for some time. >> reporter: according to some in their circle, pitt was caught off-guard with the timing. others say pitt was given advanced notice and knew jolie was filing for divorce. >> it is not a question of really not knowing that this was coming, but a dispute over whether or not everybody understood when it was going to happen. >> sources close to the couple disagree on when pitt learned about the divorce filing. as to those reports of an investigation into alleged child abuse by brad pitt, a source close to him tells "people" magazine he takes the matter seriously and did not commit any abuse of his children. nbc news has reached out to brad

but was there ever a point you were uncomfortable being in part of this? >> it was real wild. but we had a real sense of trust between the cast. when you have that confidence in each other, you can really let each other off the leash and go for it and trust that you're not going to get hurt by your fellow actors. but i think at times it was tougher for the guys doing the hazing than it was for us getting hazed. everyone would be like, are you okay? andrew was trying to keep us separated. he kept telling us not to talk to each other. >> growing up in the '80s, the guy who played johnny in "karate kid." he must get heat when he just walks down the street. these guys, they're going medieval. like i said. is there a message? social media have all kinds of comments. you aren't giving a referendum or fraternity life here. >> the film is not an indictment of fraternities, by any means. i don't think that was -- that
