anticipated, it could see more than 80 million people tune in. an audience rivaling the super bowl. with 43 days until election day, neither candidate pulled any punches. tonight we have live team coverage from the candidates to the reaction here in philadelphia. we begin with nbc10's lauren make live at hofstra university, the site of tonight's debate. lauren, you're in the spin room. >> reporter: that's right, jim, and the spin has already started. let me show you what's happening here right now. that is donald trump jr., donald trump's son, and his daughter, tiffany, who also recently graduated from penn of course. you can see they have constructed this barrier so that they can walk through here and talk to reporters. just a few moments ago, donald trump himself came into the spin room. he said it felt great out there, talked a little bit about that debate experience. now, we saw a lot of fireworks between the two of them tonight. often we would hear them say things at rallies on the stump, and perhaps you've wondered what would the other candidate say if they were standing right there

next to them. tonight, we found out. one of the most anticipated debates in presidential history began somewhat civil. >> donald, it's good to be with you. >> reporter: hillary clinton and donald trump first talked plans to create more jobs. secretary clinton, who won a tiny ko coin toss, spoke first, hitting on investing in small businesses and raising the minimum wage. >> i want us to invest in you, in your future. >> reporter: trump says his plans is to cut taxes from 35% to 15% for companies to keep them from moving out of the country. >> we have to stop our jobs from being stolen from us. we have to stop our companies from leaving the united states. >> reporter: but almost a half hour into this contest, the two traded barbs on topics we've heard much about during their respective campaigns. trump's taxes. >> the irs has an audit of your

taxes. you're perfectly free to release your taxes during an audit. so the question, does the public's right to know outweigh your personal -- >> well, i told you i will release them. >> reporter: and clinton's e-mails. the democratic presidential candidate says she regretted how she's handled them. >> i made a mistake using a private e-mail. >> that's for sure. >> and if i had to do it over again, i would obviously do it differently. >> reporter: the conversation then shifted to the divide between police and communities, following several police-involved shootings across the country. >> and so we need to do a better job of working again with the communities. >> we have to bring back law and order. now, whether or not in a place like chicago you do stop and frisk, which worked very well, mayor giuliani is here. it worked very well in new york. it brought the crime rate way down. >> reporter: another hot topic, the birther controversy. >> but nobody was caring much about it. but i was the one that got him to produce the birth certificate, and i think i did a good job. >> so he tried to put the whole racist birther lie to bed, but

it can't be dismissed that easily. >> reporter: right after that debate ended, as we said, donald trump came into the spin room. let me show you what happened when he arrived here. they had put up barriers so people couldn't get too close to him. the secret service sort of blocking the reporters. but he did stop to answer some questions, talked about what it feet like out there, said that it felt great. he also talked a little bit about something he didn't mention onstage. remember there was that point where he was talking about not wanting to say something. there was maybe something he was going to say. well, he said he didn't want to say it with chelsea in the room. so he went down, then, behind me and his family followed, also talking to some of the reporters. i want to go back, then, to the exchanges that happened on the debate stage, not just between the candidates themselves but also between the candidates and

the moderator, lester holt. there was a point where the moderator, nbc's lester holt, pressed donald trump about whether or not he had supported the iraq war. take a listen. >> you had supported the war in iraq before the invasion. what makes your -- >> i did not support the war in iraq. that is a mainstream media nonsense put out by her because she frankly, i think, the best person in her campaign is mainstream media. >> my question is -- >> would you like to hear? i was against -- wait a minute. i was against the war in iraq just so you put it out. >> the record shows otherwise, but why -- >> the record does not show that. the record shows that i'm right. >> reporter: that was lester holt trying to do some fact-checking during the debate. we are seeing both sides doing that on twitter, in e-mails, and trying to get their message out. and, of course, doing some spinning here tonight as well.

for now, live at hofstra university, i'm lauren make, nbc10 news. >> hillary clinton saying her website had turned into an instant fact-checker on her home page tonight. we heard that at the debate as well. lauren, live at hofstra, thank you so much. the presidential candidates' spouses were in the audience at hofstra as well tonight. cameras catching former president bill clinton's shaking melania trump's hand before the debate got under way. it was a quick greeting. the candidates had several guests in the audience besides family members. trump invited benghazi survivor mike geist and general michael flynn while clinton's guests included 9/11 survivor lauren manning and anastasia somoza, a woman with ser brawl palsy. there were watch parties all over our area, including nbc10's debate night at xfinity live in south philadelphia. that's where denise nakano is joining us live. >> reporter: jirm, i sat out in the crowd and saw a range of

emotions and opinions. opinions basically came down to this was entertaining but not necessarily presidential. the debate stage thrust hillary clinton and donald trump into their first face-to-face presidential showdown and created an interest like few have seen before. >> i think i'm getting a little bit more than i bargained for. >> a lot of one liners and zingers. >> it's been a hot mess, but it's been great. >> reporter: voters gaths at xfinity life. one roof but varying opinions on who won this one. >> i think trump is hitting the points. he's litting everybody know he wants to protect the country. >> she's standing her ground and holding her self accountable. >> reporter: viewers listened and watched and at times shouted and hollered the at screen like they were watching a contact smo smo sport. >> it's entertaining, but when you realize it's for the future of your country, it doesn't make you feel good at all. >> i think it's pretty entertaining.

twitter is really funning right now. but for our next president, it's a little scary. >> reporter: i found no one tonight who changed their opinion after watching the debate. if anything, it only solidified their current position. reporting live in south philadelphia, i'm denise nakano, nbc10 news. >> we know this was a high-stakes debate in a tight presidential race and a brand-new nbc news poll taken before tonight's debate has clinton leading with 51% of likely voters, trump following with 44%. nbc10's keith jones is here now with the analysis from our political punch-out team. >> the opening handshake aside, this debate played out how many people expected it actually would. hillary clinton was perceived as somewhat more composed on the stage. donald trump meanwhile the more emotional candidate. the one similarity was that both candidates stood their ground when challenged. trump repeatedly attacking clinton on what he referred to as political failures, saying secretary clinton and president obama are responsible for the situation with isis.

clinton going after trump, meanwhile, for his unwillingness to address the financial stresses of the middle class. nbc10's political analysts weighed in on what they saw tonight. >> i don't think either candidate has reached across and pulled over swing voters. i don't think either candidate -- i think the both of them are kind of working to solidify their own bases and were kind of breaking even at this point. >> this is a rorschach test. everybody sees what they want. it's not going to move the needle. she comes in a little ahead. she's going out a little ahead. >> i've been monitoring social media all night. i took an unofficial poll on my twitter page about 45 minutes ago. about 1,500 people voted. 61% say trump won the debate. for now, jim, back to you. >> a lot of attention watching on social media. the candidates showing no signs slowing down. tomorrow, hillary clinton will

campaign in raleigh, north carolina. the v.p. will be a drexel university for national boater registration day. he's expected to appear at the great court at drexel university's main building just before 11:00 a.m. the event is open to the public. donald trump will head to a different battleground state tomorrow, florida. he's set to hold a rally at a hangar at orlando international airport tuesday evening. right now trump and clinton are neck and neck in the polls in florida. the vice presidential candidates will face off in the next debate. that's happening next tuesday, october 4th, at longwood university in virginia. then you can catch trump and clinton face off in their second debate at washington university in st. louis on sunday, october 9th. the third and final presidential debate will happen wednesday, october 19th at the university of nevada in las vegas. our debate coverage is not over. nbc10's keith jones watched the debate right along with you on facebook live, and in just a few minutes, we hear from you and your thoughts on how the

candidates performed. let's turn to our weather now and a wet morning commute ahead. here's a look at nbc10 first alert radar. you can see the rain moving in. meteorologist sheena parveen is here with our nbc10 first alert neighborhood forecast, and a rainy one, sheena. >> by tomorrow morning, you'll see the showers around. right now we have some very small scattered showers through parts of delaware and cape may county. there you see some in sussex county. the one line we're watching, that is just west of the area moving through harrisburg, so that should be moving through overnight tonight. so while you're sleeping, you may be hearing some heavy rain falling. overnight, that's when we'll see some more showers move in. possibly some thunderstorms. by 7:30 in the morning, though, we do expect some rain for mart of the morning commute. temperatures in the 60s and then we'll see a different afternoon. still more rain in the forecast for pretty much the rest of the week. i'll show you the timing on that coming up. still ahead right here, back to this historic presidential debate. you're watching our continuing coverage on nbc10, your home for

release of dissidents, an opening of new opportunities in nations around the world, or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina. >> another highlight there from tonight's presidential debate. donald trump and hillary clinton squaring off on what he called her lack of stamina. and the debate was trending on social media tonight. nbc10's keith jones watched along with you. what did people have to say, keith? >> jim, we received very mixed reaction in realtime, on facebook live. i monitored posts every step of the way. here are some of them now. alicia mancuso. did either one of them suggest that we try and make it a nicer world by influenciing people to just do one nice thing a day. what a world we would live in, end quote. another quote here, stephanie, quote, my 8-year-old just asked why they were fighting. even she knows the difference between a debate and an

argument. not great role modeling here. kelly baker aldis writes this. i have a hard time saying much about it with my high schoolers because it 0 becomes an argument and they are not listening to everything. on donald trump, terrence corcoran writes, quote, he needs to release this is for the presidency of the united states. he's already the candidate. he really needs to step up his game for the next debate. the very last quote that i'll take here, actually second to last, i should add, on hillary clinton, joe lawrence writes, i wonder how hillary would be doing in the election if benghazi, e-mails, and her health issues never happened. something that a lot of people might be thinking about. the very last quote from janet santilli, i think more people are watching this than last election because of the candidates running. i think that's something most people will agree with. again, this is a small sampling of reaction on social media in our area. one thing is certain, though, jim. absolutely everyone, practically everyone, has something to say after watching this debate.

the afternoon, though. a lot of that rain is going to start to move away. temperatures, though, will be staying in the 70s. we have a stretch of 70s all the way through the weekend. so take a look. today we got to 73. tomorrow, mid-70s as well as wednesday. thursday, cooler, around 70 degrees. normal high now is 74, so it is going to continue to feel like fall out side. this week, though, you'll really want the umbrella pretty much every day. we have a rain chance in the forecast every day. it's all this tropical moisture that's going to start to move up now. currently we have a cold front approaching, but it's going to kind of stall, pull up moisture from the south, and those rain chances are going to linger through the end of the week and even to start the weekend. so here's a look at the radar. you can see the rain trying to move in here for areas in delaware like sussex county and kent county and also cape may county. even newcastle county seeing some spotty light rain. we are going to watch some more rain from maryland try to make its way into delaware. also a heavier area of rain just

outside the poconos, just outside the lehigh valley. this one pretty moderate to heavy rainfall. some thunderstorm activity. that's going to move into the lehigh valley here very soon, and i think overnight that area is going to be moving through. so take a look what it does through the overnight hours while many of you are sleeping. you may be hearing that heavy rain falling. wouldn't be surprised if we had some thungd in there too. 4:30 in the morning, if you leave your house at 4:30. you could be running into heavy rain. i think a lot of that will be gone by the majority of the morning commute. we'll see some light to moderate rain lingering. clearing in the afternoon. we go into wednesday morning. we're going to start off fairly dry. later in the day the showers move back in. there you see the moisture hanging around for thursday, so you'll want to keep that umbrella handy all the way through the end of the week. so 70s in the forecast as we go from tomorrow through thursday. the rain chances are going to stay with us. pennsylvania suburbs, mostly mid-to-low 70s for the rest of this week. lehigh valley, more clearing tomorrow. one of the warmer spots, but
