"early today" starts right now. good morning, everyone. the engineer who survived thursday's deadly train crash in new jersey is cooperating with federal investigators. they want to know whether he was fatigued, mechanical failure or speed that led to the crash. a 34-year-old woman was killed and more than 100 people injured, some in serious condition. jay gray is live in hoboken, new jersey, with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, dara. normally 15,000 or so commuters are making their way through the hoboken station behind me here. this morning, ond a handful of people inside trying to figure out what went wrong here. in just minutes, the morning rush unravelled. >> i have heavy structural damage. i have people trapped on the train. major, major tragedy. >> reporter: a new jersey

transit line sped into the hoboken station slamming into and over the bumpers at the end of the track. >> it was just horrific. an explosion of concrete dust, electrical wires. >> reporter: the canopy above collapsed falling to the ground along with steel beams and shatter red glass. a 34-year-old was standing on the platform. the hoboken resident and mom was killed by falling debris. >> we heard people screaming in the first car. they were trapped. they couldn't get out. >> reporter: more than 100 on and off the train were injured, including the engineer, who is said to be cooperating with the national transportation safety board investigation into the crash. witnesses say the train never seemed to slow down. ntsb agents hope to get data from the black box. >> from the event recorder, we hope to get information such as speed and braking. >> reporter: investigators have access to the locomotive, but to this point, structural damage to

the station has kept them out of the rest of the train. investigators believe they will be able to get into those cars laurt today. the ntsb plans to be on scene for a week to ten days here. that's the latest from hoboken, back to you. >> thank you for that report. computers are also waking up to safety concerns about their daily travels. 9 new jersey train was equipped with technology to prevent the crash. they have been demanding an advanced braking system for 40 years. my giguel almaguer reports. >> reporter: last year left eight dead and 200 injured with the train traveling 100 miles an hour. in california 25 lost their lives, 135 hurt when a commuter train slammed into a freight train in 2008. these just two of the 145 rail

line accidents experts could have been prevented with positive train control or ptc. the advanced braking system is designed to stop a train before certain accidents, like those caused by speeding or ending in head-on collisions. but only 22% of trains currently have the advanced braking system. train travel is still among the safest way to commute, but there are more kwequestions on how to make it safer sooner. miguel almaguer, los angeles. it has been a e growing theme this election cycle for publications to break from tradition in endorsements and now a bug one. for the first time in its history, u.s. today is taking a side saying donald trump is unfit for the presidency writing he lacks the temperament and knowledge and honesty that america needs from its president. for the first time in its 143-year history, the detroit news is not endorsing a republican. writing, donald trump is
