and a wet weekend. nbc10 first alert radar shows the rain that's lingering tonight. when things could start to dry out. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. ♪ some unexpected street music in center city tonight as musicians from the philadelphia orchestra walk out on opening night. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. tonight was supposed to be the beginning of the orchestra season, but instead it was the beginning of a strike. nbc10's ann dry ya cline-thomas live in center city tonight. what's the big sticking point here? >> reporter: it's all about the musicians' pay. we're told the negotiations aren't really that far apart. meanwhile patrons that got tickets, got all dressed up, even in their seats before learning that opening night was just not going to happen. ♪ this is not the concert patrons of the philadelphia orchestra

paid to see. minutes before, everyone was inside of the kimmel center anticipating opening night, when they learned the musicians had gone on strike. >> we looked at each other and said is it a joke? are you kid something. >> reporter: recent years have been rough for the orchestra. first there was the recession. then it filed for bankruptcy. as a result, the musicians say there have been pay cuts making their salaries less than in boston, and they're losing talent because of it. >> and in the bankruptcy, we did not recover from that either and we remained too far behind to remain competitive. >> reporter: the musicians have a base pay of $127,000. the rejected proposal would increase that to $135,000 over three years. >> we have a multiyear offer on the table that will offer fixed increases each year as well as an opportunity for our musicians to earn a considerable amount more. >> reporter: while the stalemate

continues, patrons are the ones losing out. >> you can't underestimate the value of these musicians and what they bring to our city. >> i don't blame them for doing what they're doing because they are world renowned musicians. they should be compensated. >> reporter: this could be a real inconvenience, especially for patrons who are coming from out of town. if you did have a ticket tonight, you can get a refund. meanwhile, both sides are hoping to come back to the negotiating table soon, but the concerts scheduled for this weekend have been canceled. reporting live outside of the kimmel center, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc10 news. to our weather now and heavy rain that led to high water in parts of our area this. was the scene at millsboro sussex county today. cupola park under water. the rain is lighter tonight, but it is still out there sticking around. chief meteorologist glen hurricane schwartz tells us what to expect for the weekend. >> we're going to be get something rain but nothing like

we've seen the last couple of days. just a few sprinkles or little drops around right now. we do have some other areas of rain, this out in the atlantic. that's coming straight to the north, so that will be in at least a portion of the area by morning. here's the future cast. as we go through the night and into the morning, there's that moisture coming. so when you get up, get out first thing in the morning, it's likely to be wet. it's going to be cloudy and chilly. temperatures not going anywhere during the morning hours, and in some of the suburbs, it's going to be in the 50s along with the rain and maybe some early thunderstorms. it won't be raining all weekend. i'll tell you when the best weather is coming along with the latest on a now category 5 hurricane in just a few minutes. if you drive anywhere in new jersey, you'll want to listen to this. filling your tank could get more expensive. state leaders have agreed on a plan to hike the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon.

so if you have a 20-gallon tank, say, it means an extra $4.60 every time you fill up. nbc10's brandon hudson is live. governor christie says the deal would actually save drivers money. >> reporter: jim, that's because the tax hike according to the governor will go to road projects. he says that drivers will say $600, money they would have spent on their own car repairs. as you know, people need their cars or their trucks, and the gas to fill them up. so state leaders are hoping that news will take the sting out of paying more at the pump. moments after we heard about new jersey's pending 23-cent gas tax hike, we went right to the people who would feel it most, drivers at a wawa. most of the people we spoke to don't like it. >> absolutely ridiculous. everything else is already incredibly expensive. i actually live in philadelphia, and i come over here to get my gas for my delivery job. >> gas already fluctuates in

jersey pretty frequently. >> reporter: vanessa anderson says she drives her son to school daily, and that cost will add up. the 23-cent per gallon tax is part of a new deal to bolster the transportation trust fund, which will get $2 billion annually for the next eight years for a long list of road projects. governor chris christie announced the deal late friday afternoon. >> the average new jersey driver will see a reduction of an estimated $600 with all the repairs we're going to be making. >> reporter: the deal includes a gradual sales tax cut, but only by 3/8%. retirees, veterans and low income workers will also see new tax credits. >> we need to keep our streets clean, people going back and forth to work. >> reporter: still needs to pass through both houses of the legislature. we also know if it does, it will be the -- the next gas tax hike since 1988. live in penn socket,heim brandon

hudson, nbc10 news. >> no indication that the transportation funding battle played a role in yesterday's new jersey transit crash in hoboken. federal investigators say they've now taken blood and urine samples from the train's engineer, but they held off interviewing him because of his injuries. nbc10's drew smith is tracking the latest developments in our breaking news center. drew? >> problems with weather, flying asbestos and technical glitches are causing delays in the investigation as new jersey comes under fire for not installing a safety mechanism on its trains. the wreckage underneath these workers is still so mangled and unsafe, investigators can't get to most of train 1614 for a second straight night. the packed commuter train came crashing into hoboken's terminal yesterday. >> the crew members have been very cooperative, and we appreciate that. >> reporter: but engineer tommy gallagher has yet to give a formal interview, and data from one of the retrieved black boxes failed to download today. >> we have to get to the bottom of what happened, and i promise

you that we will. >> reporter: as a half dozen people remain hospitalized and one family plans a funeral. governor chris christie says new jersey transit has a very good safety record. but its trains are not equipped with an automatic braking system. >> it shouldn't take losing a young mom and another tragedy to get us in gear on this. >> reporter: congress delayed the requirement until 2018. >> they should send a very clear message now that there will be no more extension. >> reporter: in addition to checking the crew's toxicology levels, investigators also plan to gather cell phones to see if they caused a distraction. reporting live tonight, i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. tonight we've learned police fired more than 100 times when they shot and killed a suspect at a philadelphia stabbing tree. authorities telling us officers thought the man had a gun after he attacked five people, including his own children. it happened in cobbs creek wednesday evening. police confronted christopher sowell and said he ignored their commands to take his hands out of his pockets. nine officers opened fire.

the police commissioner said given the number of shots, it's lucky more people weren't hurt. >> clearly 109 rounds gives a significant pause and concern regardless of what the circumstances are. >> the commissioner says officers will receive more training. police say they haven't found the gun they believe the suspect had. a final good-bye today as two wilmington firefighters are laid to rest. ♪ lieutenant christopher leach and senior firefighter jerry fickes died fighting a house fire last saturday. a fire that investigators now say was deliberately set by a woman who lived there. today in a heartbreaking moment, leach's son carried his father's helmet out of the church. tomorrow vice president joe biden will speak at a memorial service for the pair at the chase center in wilmington. and there was a poignant show of support for the firefighters tonight at dover international speedway. driver kyle benjamin displayed

a scary morning for some bethlehem residents who woke up to the smell of gas only to realize their street was sinking. police evacuated neighbors as cracks formed in foundations and windows began breaking. some homes are condemned tonight. investigators don't know what caused the sudden sinkhole but think it's linked to this week's heavy rainfall. to decision 2016. donald trump set to campaign near lancaster tomorrow night, but it's his twitter rant that has everyone talks tonight. trump attacked hillary clinton and the former miss universe, alicia machado.

trump's tweets began just after 3:00 this morning when he asked, did crooked hillary help disgusting alicia m. become a u.s. citizen so she could use her in the debate? he also claimed machado had a sex tape, which has not been substantiated. machado has said trump degraded her for gaining weight as miss universe. today at a rally, clinton called the tweets proof trump is unfit to be president. >> who gets up at 3:00 in the morning to engage in a twitter attack? i mean his latest twitter melt down is unhinged, even for him. >> later while campaigning in michigan, trump had a lot to say about his microphone during monday's debate. >> and you think you have 100 million people watching, what do you do? stop the show? please fix it. it was bad. i wonder why it was bad. think of that. i wonder why it was bad. >> today the commission on presidential debates released a statement saying, quote, there

were issues regarding donald trump's audio that affected the sound level in the debate hall, end quote. the problem did not affect the audio on the television broadcast. about 200 people celebrated independent living tonight. this party at inglis house in win field gave people with disabilities a night to eat, drink and dance. inglis house helps to work people with disabilities live independently. let's go back to the weather and how rainy it's going to be this weekend. maybe some sun for part of it? >> we may get some breaks on sunday -- may. we're not expecting them on saturday, though. we're not expecting heavy rain like we've had the last couple of days, just some sprinkles on the radar now. a little bit more farther to the south. but look at the amounts of rain that fell. this is in southern delaware, in sus es county. radar estimated over 15 inches of rain near millford. 7 near georgetown, but up to a foot just east on route 9.

millsboro 11 inches. you saw the flooding in some of that video a few minutes ago. father to the north in delaware, 4, 5, 6 inches of rain. close to 5 in cape may. farther to the north, lesser amounts, but still pretty substantial rain until you get close to the delaware river, and it's about a half inch. we've got cloudy skies right now, very little rain in the area. but it's chilly, 57 in lehigh valley and the pennsylvania suburbs. so, yeah, it's chilly, and with all the clouds and the east wind, it's not going to warm up during the day tomorrow. and here comes the rain. there's for the morning hours. it's not a steady rain. it's not real heavy, but it's a nuisance, that's for sure. here's saturday night and into sunday morning. still cloudy, more showers, and maybe a couple of breaks in the afternoon. breaks of sunshine that could push temperatures into the 70s in parts of the area. but that's about as optimistic as you can get.

no optimism for saturday. cloudy skies, periods of rain, temperatures in the 60s, bit of a breeze. sunday, if we get a few breaks in the afternoon, especially delaware and the jersey shore, temperatures could get into the 70s. now, here's trouble. this is hurricane matthew. just came in. category 5 hurricane, the strongest of the season by far. 160-mile-an-hour winds, and it's moving slowly. this is going to be a disaster for jamaica. at least a category 3, maybe a 4 hitting it by monday. 130-mile-an-hour winds. that could be the strongest hurricane in jamaica's history if that happens. then it's moving to the north, but it's taking its good old time. that's next wednesday. and it's just east of miami. where does it go from there? it's in the general direction of the east coast, but even if it stays offshore, it's a large

hurricane. it will still impact our winds and coast. the models are in pretty good agreement for a while, and then we get toward the end of next week, and there's a lot of disagreement. so we got a lot of time to watch it. that's a whole week away, that last picture. so there's sunday with mostly cloudy skies. finally get some sunshine on monday and tuesday, and we could see some of the impacts from matthew as early as wednesday and some rain could even be from a front coming in from the west, but that's chilly weather, onshore winds, windy conditions. and then we may dry out by next weekend. we'll be right back.
