october is beginning and pretty much the way september ended. gray and cool out. a live look outside philadelphia international airport. there are damp spots on the runway this morning. you won't see much sunshine today. let's check the weekend forecast from meteorologist krystal klei. hi, krystal. >> we're all missing the sunshine. it has been gray day after gray day. today that continues because the storm system is still sitting to our west, kind of parked there which means it continues to pull that moisture up as well as the front helping with showers firing off. here's what we have our eye on. right now, cloudiness for us in our area. take a look and we have an area of showers sitting just down to the southeast of us. that's mostly going to clip the shore and stay out of our zone. then we have a line of showers moving along. that line of showers will likely move into the area as we move late morning and afternoon.

jerry fickes died saturday in a row home fire. monique braxton is live in wilmington with details about the service. monique? >> reporter: hi, ted. right now fire executives who are responsible for the processional are meeting outside the building, you can see them over my shoulder. we learned vice president joe biden and dr. jill biden will be among the mourners. the vice president will pay tribute to two men who sacrificed their lives. you may recall biden shared condolences at the scene of the gutted row home on lakeview road one week ago. our camera captured thousands from across the country at a public service for lieutenant christopher leach yesterday. the service for senior firefighter jerry fickes was private at the request of his family. he rushed into the burning home to rescue leach. >> absolutely love firefighters.

only time you truly understand the gravity of what the men and women are willing to give up to keep us all safe. >> reporter: two firefighters are still recovering at the hospital. investigators have arrested a 27-year-old woman. we learned she has confessed to setting the fire to the house and told investigators she was drunk and angry. now she's charged with first degree murder and about a dozen other related charges. firefighters will begin arriving in a short time. we will have all of the activity outside chase center as it happens. live in wilmington, monique braxton, nbc10 news. >> there was poignant show of support for firefighters at dover

speedway. kyle benjamin displayed the fire department crest on the hood of his car and won his first career win. from concert hall seats to the streets, patrons of philadelphia orchestra had to settle for an outside serenade after they went on strike opening night. the walk out came before the start of the orchestra season. all concerts for this weekend are cancelled. they put down instruments and picked up picket signs. the labor union voted to strike after salary talks with orchestra leadership struck a sour note. years of pay cuts put their salaries well below ork stras in other cities. patrons were in their seats when they learned the first concert had been cancelled. >> we kind of looked at each other, is this a joke? >> we have a multi year offer on the table that will --

>> can't underestimate the value of the musicians, what they bring to our city. >> i don't blame them for doing what they are doing, they are world renowned musicians. >> you can get a refund for any concert cancelled by the strike. new jersey drivers, be ready to spend more at the gas pump. governor christie and democratic leaders agreed on a plan to hike gas tax by 23 cents per gallon. if you have a 20 gallon tank that's $4.60 more every time you fill up. it is for a transportation fund. it will receive $2 billion for the next 8 years. christie says money spent on roads will save the average driver 600 in repairs. we talked to drivers with mixed reactions to the proposal. >> absolutely ridiculous, everything else is incredibly expensive.

i live in philadelphia and come here to get my gas. for my delivery job. >> people make it back and forth to work. >> it includes several tax cuts. the sales tax would gradually drop 3/8th%. over the next two years. there will be tax credits for retiree, vets and low income workers. the proposal still needs to pass through both houses of the legislature. now to the deadly crash of the transit train in hoboken. federal investigators took blood and urine samples from the engineer but are holding off interviewing him because of his injuries. they'll return to the crash site this morning. if they're able to secure the damaged terminal, could get their first look at some of the train cars still untouched. black box failed to download yesterday so it is not known why the train went into the station

screams from kids aboard a texas school bus that flipped last week. yesterday school officials released video of that accident near houston that injured more than a dozen high school students and the driver. investigators say the driver told them she swerved to avoid another vehicle and lost control. none of the injuries life-threatening. the driver of a fedex truck faces aggravated assault after trying to force a school bus off the road near the jersey shore. according to authorities, the bus tried to pass. the school bus driver received a lesser charge for illegal

today, and look at this now organized area of thunderstorms. starting to head into north carolina. that's something we have to watch as we move late day and even into overnight, spot rain chances possible lingering from that. this is all part of the same system swirling off to the west. it's going to start to shift sunday into monday. but for today, it is another gray forecast. not good when we already have this on the map. this is doppler estimated rainfall total. when you see red, orange, huge numbers that we're looking at. even good amounts for philadelphia and south jersey on the shore. we expected this. called for it days before the rain moved in. expectation, delaware hit hardest. milford, 8 inches. close to a foot of rain, a foot there estimated near milton borrow.

this was spread over several days. bad news, flooding issues in delaware, suffolk, new castle county. looking at some red and purple, three inches near wilmington. six in middletown, one and a half in philadelphia. again, not the official amount but estimated amounts based on what radar picked up. some of you may see more or less than what's on the board here so far. 2.9 inches at sea isle city. today, rain chances out there for philadelphia, dover, reading, atlantic city. still going to be on and off chances for atlantic city, but elsewhere chances drop off to more isolated potential, and likelihood slows for monday, tuesday, wednesday. dryer conditions and sunshine. for the for example, 69 in

we have the story of the good samaritan that tried to save that woman's life. >> reporter: moments after the horrific crash amid wreckage. look at the man in the light blue jacket. the woman he found under the debris, a 34-year-old, critically hurt. >> i was just moving people, picking up beams and metal and happened to see like her feet on the ground. >> reporter: he could see she was bleeding profusely, struggling to breathe. >> told her just breathe, focus on your family and loved ones, i am here, not going to leave you, and she just fought, she really did try her best. >> reporter: the man told us he had not been running late for class at the nearby institute, he would not have taken the shortcut through the train station moments before the

crash. >> everyone started to run out. i started to run in. it was like instinct. i was like what's going on. saw the train hit the wall. >> reporter: in the chaos that followed, they finally told him he had to leave. he continued to inquire about the woman while at school. only later did he learn her name and that the hoboken attorney and mom of one had died. >> she didn't respond back to me. i know she knew i was going to make sure she wasn't by herself. little piece of my heart. i want her family to know i really tried my best. i'm sorry. >> new jersey weekend schedule will not include commuter rail service which remains suspended. light rail will be operating. the agency will also move things along by cross honoring train tickets for busses, local ferries and local carriers.

gas prices could soon be going up in new jersey. governor christie and leaders agreed on a plan to hike gas tax by 23 cents per gallon. if you have a 20 gallon tank, it means another $4.60 every time you fill up. the deal is to replenish the state's transportation trust fund which will pay for road projects. it will include $2 billion a year for 8 years and the sales tax would eventually drop 3/8ths% over two years and estate tax eliminated. the proposal needs to pass both houses. patrons of the philadelphia orchestra had to settle for an outside serenade with musicians going on strike opening night.

krystal klei is here to tell us about a storm or two we could get today. >> and we are looking at hurricane matthew. there's a look. with satellite, you see it is a large system, now a category four. was category five overnight. we will get to hurricane matthew in a moment. as ted said, let's talk about now. showers are still in the forecast. here's why. we have a storm system sitting well to the west of us. you can see the rotation. but this is pulling up moisture and wrapping around atlantic and new england. we are seeing fog and misty conditions and rain itself moving through. right now our eyes on a couple of things. move in closer. showers are hanging overseas.

at best going to clip parts of the shore into delaware this morning with some rain. then take a look at what we're tracking now. some showers and thunderstorms looking to move right through currently just starting to track into washington and maryland. that's moving through delaware and parts of new jersey and pennsylvania later this morning into your afternoon. rain is not overnight. grab the umbrella and rain gear. it won't rain consistently, but on, off showers are in the forecast. now let's go back to hurricane matthew. that category four system, 150 miles per hour winds at the 5:00 a.m. update. there will be an 8:00 a.m. update in a few minutes, we will get you that in the next half hour. this is moving west 7 miles per hour. put this in motion, this is the projected track. goes from the west, turning north by sunday. still a category four.

then this is the issue. jamaica, haiti, cuba all in the line of fire. category three hurricane in the forecast. over 100 miles per hour winds, can cause serious damage. it continues here. now the bahamas a threat by wednesday. as we continue through to thursday, the cone is wider, meaningless certainty on where this will go. you see the potential maybe to clip the coast of florida. this is the projected track now through thursday. a little less able to say with consistency where it goes following the path through the caribbean, but these are the possible paths. the spaghetti plot or different computer models show us it tracks along the east coast and it may bring enough moisture into the area for us to see chances of rain for late in the work week into the weekend. here's the ten day on 10. 69 for us today. chances of on, off showers and

the police departments say they're aware of social media posts of people dressing as clowns, hanging around schools. the department determined no threats were made toward the school but added officers around the building during yesterday's dismissal to make students feel at ease. there's been a rash of creepy clown sightings near schools

across the country the past few weeks. one was in schuylkill county. police in reading are trying to figure out who stabbed and killed a teenager after someone wearing a clown mask may have provoked a fight. in new york, authorities on long island say they received reports of clowns trying to scare children this week. parents are on edge. >> activities outside were cancelled due to the clown. >> if someone is menacing, you want to protect your children. >> many believe reports of creepy clowns are rumors, police are taking it seriously as we are seeing it. volkswagon reached another settlement with regard to the emissions cheating scandal. they agreed to pay dealers $1.2 billion. volkswagon previously reached an agreement to buy back or repair a half million vehicles and pay owners 5 to $10,000 each. the automaker admitted they rigged cars to pass emissions tests.

new jersey troopers participated in the 22 pushup challenge in west trenton. dozens dropped to the ground to do pushups. it raises awareness for ptsd and 22 vets that commit suicide every day. that music means one thing and one thing only. we are rocking like grandma's favorite chair. it's time for the high school blitz. first up, the runner up for our game of the week.
