we begin with a developing story. take a look at this scene unfolding in a monroe county backyard. skyforce 10 captured dozens of police officers literally digging for clues. >> tonight family members tell us the search is connected to the disappears of lehigh valley native holly grim. she went missing from her home three years ago. that search is going on about 40 miles away, in ross township county. >> nbc 10's deanna durante is live with the latest. >> reporter: take a look behind me. you can see two state police cars guarding the area. the homeowners are not home. state police have been here most of the day. many of the investigators fanning out around 3:00 this afternoon. we spoke to the family of holly grim. they say they are not going to lose hope that holly is alive somewhere. however they do say they know the search going on here is related to her disappearance. >> we need to put up more

posters. we have lots of people working on that. it's so important that if you see someone that looks like her, please call the state police. >> reporter: jeanette grim says she has no idea why state police are searching the woods behind a house in ross township. she's not surprised about the search. they said troopers informed her it would have something to do with her daughter's disappearance. >> don't give up hope. you have to have hope and prayers. i think she's out there, hopefully being taken care of. and i know she's thinking of her son. i'm going to keep looking. >> reporter: grim says she's holding out her her daughter is still alive. she said she's heard reports a human bone was found near the home and says she knows the homeowner, a man she and her daughter worked with. from the air, state police could be seen using buckets to haul away dirt and sift it to look for evidence. no charges have been filed in the case. nbc 10 learned pennsylvania

state police obtained a search warrant in the case filed in monroe county, and it's under seal. grim vanished in 2013. she had taken her son to the bus stop. she was supposed to go to work but instead her car was in her driveway and grim was gone. jeanette hopes holly will come home. >> i know when you get the opportunity, you'll come home to us. we're doing our best to bring your son up right. you can be very proud of him. >> reporter: at this point the monroe county district attorney's office and the pennsylvania state police are saying very little on the record about this investigation. again, the home is a co-worker of holly grim who no longer works in allentown. we stopped and talked with the owner, he says you can't talk about the case. he says every time pennsylvania police have stopped in there,

they have been cooperated. grim saying she wants people to continue searching for her daughter. live in ross township, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. also tonight, a developing story in the caribbean. right now the people of haiti are bracing for the worst of hurricane matthew. heavy rain has already led to flooding and at least four deaths. >> right now other countries in the caribbean are warning people to evacuate. cuba, jamaica, and the bahamas are bracing for potential flooding and strong winds from hurricane matthew. nbc's morgan radford joins us now from kingston, jamaica. >> morgan, what's the latest from there? >> reporter: denise, keith, good morning -- well, good evening now. the eastern bands of that storm system have already dropped heavy rain on the eastern part of the island. that's where about 900 people have gone into shelters. those who are deciding to brace for this storm this evening, they're collecting bottles of water, stocking up their car

with extra gas. winds could reach 140 miles per hour and rain 10 to 15 inches. this is one of the most severe storms the caribbean have seen thus far. people are not only concerned about hurricane matthew but also concerned about the aftermath. we're talking about flash floods and mudslides. and everyone we've spoken to here not only mentions hurricane matthew but also hurricane gilbert back in 1988. to give you a sense of scale, that was a category 3 and it almost completely debilitated this island, leaving it without electricity for three months. so people here are not taking any chances with this category 4. back to you. >> morgan bradford live. let's get the latest from nbc 10 meteorologist sheena parveen. >> there is still uncertainty about where hurricane matthew could go next. >> it's moving north, could get

into the bahamas over the next few days. after that, there's a wider range of uncertainty. there's jamaica, hispaniola, cuba. this is a well-organized, strong category 4 storm with hurricane warnings over cuba, hispaniola and the bahamas. we're seeing a strong hurricane with damaging winds. lots of rain, like we mentioned. we could see over 15 inches of rain in some of these caribbean islands. max winds, 140 miles per hour, moving to the north at seven miles per hour, relatively slow for a hurricane. as it continues moving north, it will be passing near the bahamas by about thursday afternoon. a lot of computer models are agreeing on this, at that time it could be a category 3 hurricane. florida back in the cone from thursday to friday. the track has shifted just abilitia little bit farther to the west, putting the united states more

in the track friday and saturday afternoon, could be nearing north or south carolina by the weekend. there's a lot of uncertainty so we'll be watching this closely. computer models have it going up the east coast of the united states, and then a big range of uncertainty. all the updates for you on nbc 10. we'll look at the local forecast with a cooldown coming up. donald trump has not released his tax returns, but three pages from 20 years ago are rocking the race for the white house. >> in the past 30 minutes, trump spoke at a rally in colorado where he promised to fix a broken tax code. >> the unfairness of the tax laws is unbelievable. it's something i've been talking about for a long time, despite, frankly, being a big beneficiary of the laws. but i'm working for you now, i'm not working for trump. >> hillary clinton is now attacking trump, saying he hasn't paid his fair share. nbc's steve handelsman has new

details. >> reporter: today in ohio, hillary clinton blasted donald trump for decades of apparently paying no federal income tax. >> he abuses his power, games the system, puts his own interests ahead of the country. it's trump first and everyone else last. >> reporter: the bombshell that the developer declared a billion dollar loss in 1995 that could have exempted him from federal income tax came when his forms were sent by a source to a "new york times" reporter, suzanne craig. >> we were able to verify them on the record via the accountant who designed them. >> in the end our country isn't going to be able to get itself back on track unless it has tax reform. >> reporter: but trump's new plan keeps tax loopholes he used in the '90s. in another move that could hurt him with women voters, trump

agreed with retired generals who says women in combat hurts readiness. >> we're going to get away from political correctness. >> reporter: what the gop nominee cannot do as of today is solicit contributions to his controversial charity. the new york attorney general issued the order, saying the trump foundation is not properly registered. along with his taxes, trump's foundation and the clinton foundation are sure to be main topics tomorrow night in the vice presidential debate in virginia. mike pence on stage for trump, tim kaine for clinton. steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. a group that once supported a democratic candidate for president is making an unusual switch and backing donald trump. the group, black men for bernie, made the announcement today in philadelphia. they'll be holding an all american rally for trump this saturday at independence mall. the founder of the group says trump's real estate experience is what's needed to develop urban neighborhoods.

>> i am trying to wake people up to what is taking place and who you're voting for. and we need to do something different if we expect some different results. >> carter also says he's hoping for a partnership between urban communities and the republican party. the hillary clinton campaign brought a little hollywood to our area today. actor ted danson stopped in westchester, stumping for clinton. the "cheers" star met with supporters at a home on market street to talk about climate change. tomorrow, clinton is looking for votes in delaware county. she'll be in haverford township along with her daughter chelsea and actress elizabeth banks who graduated from penn. clinton will attend a voter registration event in harrisburg tomorrow. time is running out if you want to vote this november. here are the deadlines for each state. pennsylvania's is a week from tomorrow, on october 11th. the deadline in delaware is

october 15th. and in new jersey it is october 18th. nbc 10 is your source for decision 2016, including tomorrow's vice presidential debate. our lauren mayk travels to virginia for tomorrow's big event. she'll have live reports throughout the day. a welcome sight for septa commuters. the transit agency resumed a normal schedule today. for three months a third of the rail cars were sidelined because of a suspension problem. today's scheduled change means about 200 more train trips a day across septa's 13 regional rail lines. more than 100 train cars were taken off the tracks for repairs. there were cracks in the beams that distribute the weight of the cars to their axles. septa will continue leasing rail cars from amtrak and new jersey transit until the entire fleet is repaired, and that's expected to take until mid-november. a bethlehem company is getting a $1.5 million grant from the state. ben franklin tech ventures will

use the money to build a 14,000 square foot expansion. the company provides support to startups that create and retain family-supporting jobs. over the next five years, the company will bring 40 jobs to that area. fire! >> a welcome blast from the "uss new jersey" as the navy's newest ship was commissioned in philadelphia. the "uss john p. murtha" was named for pennsylvania's longest-serving congressman. the ship will call the port of san diego home. today millions of people across the world are celebrating the jewish new year, rosh hashanah began last night. now at 5:00, answers delayed in the murder case of a 3-year-old boy in camden county. he's been nearly a year since the body of brendan creato was found near the cooper river. the boy's father was supposed to go on trial today. >> nbc 10's cydney long explains why the judge is giving the defense more time. >> this isn't something we do lightly. >> reporter: accused of killing his own son, allegedly motivated by a girlfriend who didn't like children, his trial begins this year. >> we want this over with as soon as possible.

we don't want to be hasty. we don't want to rush this into a bad result. this is as serious as it gets. >> reporter: the judge granted the defense more time, setting a january 9th firm trial date. the defense attorney says the medical examiner did a poor at best job. >> it really is just abominable what's happened in this case. it's a shame for this little boy and a shame for my client. >> reporter: david creato remains in jail. his parents speak to him every day by phone. >> it's hard for him, his world changed from a what you call a normal life to total craziness overnight. >> reporter: creato senior says his song is wrongly accused, saying there's no way he could kill the little boy he adored. >> people have to dissect the

question, why. there's no rhyme or reason, no motivate, no reason why this father would take his son's life. >> when you're on trial for killing your own son, how difficult that is physically and emotionally to be in prison. >> reporter: brendan's mother who shared custody of the boy left court abruptly. the anniversary of brendan's death is ten days from now. his grandparents will hold a mass in his honor, saturday, october 15th, at the holy savior church in westmont at 5:00. from camden, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. gas prices in our area are expected to start going down. that's according to triple a mid-atlantic. the reason, there are a couple of. refineries are switching to the winter blend of gasoline, which is cheaper. another reason, the summer driving season is over. so demand for gas is dropping. repairs were recently completed on the broken pipeline in

alabama. the philadelphia police department is going green. today they unveiled the city's first plug-in police cars and charging station. the mayor was on hand for today's announcement. the first of four ford fusion hybrids will be put into service as community relations vehicles. >> we want accountability! >> two protesters interrupted today's announcement. the men, one with a megaphone, as you can hear, demanded answers for last week's shooting death of an assault suspect. the men wanted to know why more than a hundred shots were fired by police to take down the suspect. the mayor calmly answered their questions before the men walked off. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. a great day to get out on the golf course. nbc 10 at the golf course in glenn mills. aside from the fog this morning,

conditions really improved today. take a look, rehoboth beach, sunny skies, comfortable, temperatures around 70 degrees at rehoboth beach and many delaware beaches. cooler temperatures are ahead in the forecast tomorrow for much of the area. we'll be staying mostly dry. can't rule out a couple of isolated showers tomorrow afternoon. but tomorrow afternoon, we will be mostly in the upper 60s. right now we're mostly in the mid- to low 70s. philadelphia coming in at 73 degrees, pennsylvania suburbs, mostly the mid-70s. new jersey neighborhoods, voorhees 71, mt. laurel, 72. robertsville, 72. hope well township, 70 degrees. very comfortable outside. many areas have seen a break in the cloud cover and now seeing a lot more in the way of sunshine. we have scattered showers across much of the northeast, not a big deal, they're failure small, quick movers as well.

we have some in berks county trying to move through lehigh valley. berks county showing rain moving towards rockland, that will continue moving mostly to the south and east. not a big deal, a quick mover. tomorrow we'll keep the clouds in the forecast. chance of an isolated shower similar to what we're seeing this afternoon. temperatures, mostly the upper 60s. chestnut hill, 68 degrees. if you're in allentown tomorrow, 68 degrees. egg harbor city tomorrow, 67. newark and delaware, 67 degrees. we can't rule out an isolated shower. future weather trying to show that here by the afternoon. not going to be very widespread. pretty quick movers, fairly light. but the clouds will hang around. even for wednesday we'll stay mostly dry, and the clouds will still be with us. more sunshine through the day on thursday. but then by thursday, take a look at what should be off the coast of south florida, over the

bahamas. that would be hurricane matthew by thursday afternoon. so the recent update, the most recent as of 5:00 p.m. from the national hurricane center, still a category 4 hurricane, winds sustained at 140 miles an hour, moving fairly slow to the north at seven miles per hour. it is impacting jamaica, hispaniola, on its way to cuba. by thursday could be a category 3 hurricane as it nears florida. we'll be watching that very closely. this is the updated track. more of the united states is now in this track. it's shifted farther to the west. we're going to be watching this closely to see if it maybe skims the florida east coast. south carolina, north carolina, and more of this forecast cone as we go into the weekend than we had previously. of course as we get later into the weekend, we'll be watching for it to potentially impact our weather. we're still a little bit too far out to tell. we will be watching it with its proximity to us as we go from mostly saturday, sunday, and

monday. here is a look at the computer models, the time frame being about saturday to monday here, depending on the speed of this thing, as we know these things starts to change more as we get closer. the spread here with the computer models, that's about 800 miles. so i think by the middle to end of this week especially, we'll have a much better idea on the speed and of course what track this storm will be taking. but as of now, it is definitely something for us to watch. temperatures over the next couple of days with your ten-day forecast, upper 60s tuesday and wednesday. back in the 70s by the end of the week. i'll put a rain chance in for saturday and sunday. but of course that forecast will most likely get adjusted as we go further out in time. next at 5:00, a new push to help veterans struggling with mental illness. plus what robin williams' wife is revealing about the disease that led to the comedian taking his own life.

in a new essay, the widow of robin williams said the actor had, quote, chemical warfare in his brain before his death. he took his own life more than two years ago. he suffered from a kind of dementia that impacted his memory and language abilities. his wife susan schneider williams wrote about his last years in the medical journal

"neurology." she wrote, quote, robin was losing his mind and was aware of it. can you imagine the pain he felt as he experienced himself disintegrating? hopefully from this sharing of our experience you will be inspired to turn robin's suffering into something meaningful, end quote. a call today from a south jersey congressman to help veterans suffering with mental health issues. nbc 10 at rutgers university in camden today. that's why u.s. representative donald norcross met with several veterans to announce new legislation he's backing. the bill provides immediate access to veterans who want emergency mental health care. 22 veterans commit suicide in our country every day because of mental health issues. >> i think the number 22 is a bad number, right? i've had friends that are in that category. and i think that the number 22 should be down to zero.

>> post traumatic stress disorder is among the issues veterans face. new jersey state troopers took part in a 22-pushup challenge in west trenton friday. dozens of officers dropped to the ground to do pushups. the challenge raises awareness for post traumatic stress disorder and the 22 veterans who commit suicide in the u.s. every day. switching gears, next at 5:00, bracing for impact. a very strong hurricane matthew is getting closer to countries in the caribbean.

right now at 5:30, nbc 10 is following several developing stories, one of them a strong hurricane matthew churning in the caribbean and getting closer to several countries as well. tonight haiti is bracing for the worst. other nearby countries have warned people to evacuate. >> nbc's gabe do you tel gutier from port-au-prince, haiti. >> reporter: more than a thousand emergency shelters are opened as hurricane matthew barrels down on haiti. some areas could see up to 40 inches of rain, that could trigger deadly mudslides in a

country that's still struggling to recover from a deadly earthquake six years ago. hurricane matthew has dumped torrential rain and is making its way north. haiti's airport is closed and the interim president in haiti is warning residents to take cover. gabe gutierrez, nbc 10 news, port-au-prince. sheena, way to early to know if the storm will impact us in the united states. but do we have any insight as to what may happen? >> it will come to the united states by thursday afternoon, at that time we'll have a better idea. but parts of florida and the east coast are in part of the cone now, that update coming in at 5:00. this is the center, the eye of hurricane matthew getting closer to haiti, which is under a hurricane warning, as well as cuba, and the bahamas under a hurricane warning, a strong

category 4 storm. and it is very well organized. we do not not expect this thing to be weakening dramatically anytime soon. max winds 140 miles an hour, right around the center. you see the cloud cover extending as far north already as the bahamas. the most updated track from the national hurricane center, a lot of computer models are in agreement, which is why the cone is fairly fnarrow until thursda, that this will be passing over the bahamas as a category 3 hurricane, a major hurricane. florida is a little bit more in the cone, as well as parts of the southeast, along the east coast, up through north carolina. this cone as of the 5:00 p.m. advisory has shifted a little farther to the west, that does include more of the united states. again, we're still fairly far out in time. we're looking at saturday afternoon here, approaching south or north carolina. potentially as a category 2. but this again could change. the cone gets wirder as we go

three years ago. that search is going on about 40 miles away in ross township. we'll have a live report coming up at 6:00. final preparations are under way for the vice presidential debate between democrat tim kaine and roepublican mike penc. nbc 10 got a peek at the auditorium today. the format is a little bit different from the presidential debates. the two candidates will be seated at a table with the moderator. the commission decided not to release even broad topics of what they'll even talk about. >> the moderate and her only or moderator knows what the questions will be. >> we've learned senator tim kaine will get the first question. this morning hillary clinton's national campaign manager told us, you can expect to hear her running mate talk

about taxes during tomorrow's debate. senator kaine is going to be talking about the plan that he has put together with secretary clinton to get this economy working for everybody, not just those at the top. rather than talking about how smart it is not to pay your taxes, he's going to talk about how we'll get billionaires and millionaires paying their fair share. >> robbie mook says the plan clinton and kaine put together cuts classes for the middle class. donald trump acknowledged he has, quote, legally used the tax laws to my benefit, unquote, while campaigning in colorado. he said that in private business he brilliantly used those laws to pay as little tax as legally possible during turbulent economic times. ove over the weekend "the new york times" reported trump may have avoided paying taxes for 20 years. >> the unfairness of the tax laws is unbelievable.

he won silver in shot put during the summer games. he will be recognized at the nazareth borough council meeting. the public is invited to attend. kovacs will participate in a meet and greet. some parents saving for their child's college education have developed a bad habit that could prove financially crippling. more than a thousand parents who socked money away in 529s for their children's college education were surveyed. it turns out nearly half of them have raided those accounts. they withdrew money to pay for things like vacations and weddings. the parents were asked why they did it. most claim they didn't know any better. >> in the survey, about 21% of people said they don't think there's any penalty to tapping the funds early, which sorry, guys, but there are penalties there, and you'll also owe some taxes on any earnings that are in the account. >> no good. withdrawals that don't apply to college education are subject to an income tax of 10% in addition

to penalties. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. a mix of clouds and sun today in camden. nbc 10 at rutgers university where the fall semester is in full swing. come tomorrow, it's going to feel a lot more like fall. afternoon high temperatures will be more in the upper 60s. today we're in the mid- to low 70s. the cooler temperatures will be here tomorrow and wednesday. you can see that at the bottom of your screen with your seven-day forecast. and we're going to be relatively dry over the next several days. really for the rest of the week we'll have mainly dry weather ahead. going into the weekend, though, that's when we'll really be paying attention to hurricane matthew. the time frame, if it gets close enough to us to impact us, would be this weekend or late this weekend. but that's also going to depend on how fast or slow the system starts moving over the next few days. so hurricane matthew currently impacting jamaica and haiti. much of hispaniola, on its way to cuba, ultimately the bahamas.

it's a very strong hurricane. 73 now in philadelphia, 75 in wilmington. low 70s for south jersey neighborhoods as well as our pennsylvania suburbs. closer look at the philadelphia area, kensington coming in 75 degrees. graduate hospital, 76. fox chase coming in 74 degrees. chestnut hill down to 68. still a very comfortable afternoon. take a look at what temperatures will do over the next couple of days. in philadelphia we've been in the mid-70s. tomorrow, 68. wednesday, 69. feeling a lot more like fall. we'll end out the week with temperatures in the mid-70s. then our attention turns to what hurricane matthew will be doing at that time. locally we're pretty much mostly dry. there is one area seeing some rainfall. that is in parts of berks county heading into upper montgomery county. that's really about it. we just have this one shower that will be moving into montgomery county soon. it's mostly just on the lighter

side. rockland, approaching douglas, now seeing some of that rain activity. that will quickly be moving by. neighborhood temperatures for tomorrow, upper obvio60s. don't be surprised if you see an isolated shower around. fairmount, 68. schwenksville, 67. reading, 69 for the high tomorrow afternoon. egg harbor city, 67. dover coming in 69 degrees and mostly cloudy. future weather, clouds hang around tomorrow. chance of an isolated shower or two. not a big deal. but then we go into wednesday and expect another dry day, partly to mostly cloudy skies. by thursday, more in the way of sunshine. at the same time, hurricane matthew should be right over the bahamas. it's a very strong hurricane. we'll be watching this very closely. at that point, by thursday, it will be close to the united states. right now, max winds 140 miles an hour, making it a category 4. there's jamaica, there's

6:30. keith and denise? >> all right, lester, see you in a bit. the story a lot of people are talking about today, reality tv star kim kardashian west robbed at gunpoint inside a private residence in paris overnight. >> armed robbers made off with millions of dollars of jewelry. nbc's erica byfield has the latest. >> reporter: we saw reality star kim kardashian west and her husband kanye west in their tribeca neighborhood. this is the first time we've seen her since fake cops in paris tied her up and got away with millions of dollars' worth of jewels. she was there for fashion week. sources tell nbc news the highest happened in this residence early sunday morning. celebrities are known to stay here. it's like a bed and breakfast. one security guard was on duty overnight. the phony cops restrained him, went to kim's room, and managed

cleanup continues at the hoboken train station today. crews are trying to clear the wreckage so investigators can access the train cars inside.

investigators say they recovered one of the event recorders but it wasn't operational. >> the black box remains in the control car but not accessible because of the dangerous debris. nbc's tom costello has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: this morning, photos from the ntsb show the extensive structural damage inside the hoboken station that's kept investigators from gaining access to much of the train. the engineer told investigators he had gotten plenty of sleep the night before the crash. he said the train and brakes were working normally. >> he said when he checked the speedometer, he was operating at 10 miles per hour when entering the station track. the engineer says he has no memory of the accident. he remembers waking up on the floor of the cab. >> reporter: 10 miles per hour is the posted speed limit. but witnesses say the train was going much faster. another setback for the ntsb,

and digging in a search that could crack the mysterious disappearance of this woman nearly three years ago. that woman disappeared from her home in lehigh county in november 2013. now the search has led investigators to a house about an hour away in ross township, monroe county. nbc 10's deanna durante has been working the story all day long. she joins us now live from ross township. deanna, what are police telling you? >> reporter: at this point nothing, despite repeated requests for comment. we can tell you we spoke with the mother of holly grim. she's having more of these fliers printed up, holding out hope that her daughter is still alive. state police are keeping watch at this house. they expect to be out here digging again tomorrow. from the air, you can see them. dozens of forensic investigators, state police officers, and medical examiner staff, all digging and sifting through the dirt behind this ross township home. a man who once worked with holly grim owns the house. grim took her son to the b
