team is breaking down what these models mean for the caribbean as the u.s. >> let's go right to meteorologist sheena parveen for these details. >> the caribbean is still dealing with a very strong hurricane. there it is, hurricane matthew, a well-defined eye moving towards guantanamo at the bottom. and this is still a category 4, as of the latested a viery, winds are still sustained about 140 miles an hour. that's five miles an hour less than the last update. but that's not much difference. it's moving to the north at 9 miles an hour, so a decent speed up to the north would be putting it in the bahamas in the next 24 hours or so. so we're going to keep watching it as it goes north. now we're going to take a look at all the hurricane warnings that are out there. guantanamo, that's where we the
5:01 pm
strongest winds. hurricane warnings are up for the bahamas they get very close to florida. of course for haiti and cuba, the hurricane warnings are there because they're experiencing hurricane force winds. but the hurricane watch has now been added to florida, if you look at cape canaveral, that's a hurricane watch, then we have a tropical storm watch a farther south, so these areas are bracing hurricane force winds and tropical storm force winds and we will be watching this very closely as we get closer to the weekend and closer to the end of the week, and of course florida is definitely preparing. >> and here in the united states, florida's governor says residents should prepare for a direct hit. >> in south carolina, they're prepared to evacuate more than a million people from the coast. let's check with glenn
5:02 pm
"hurricane" schwartz. >> out certainly looks like an increased threat to florida and at least south carolina, probably north carolina as well. and as a matter of fact, it's a threat of a possible category 4 making landfall in the florida east coast. over 130-mile-per-hour winds for category 4. that would be devastating hurricane. but, after the carolinas, it has more of a chance of making a right turn, due to some of the latest computer models that have come in in the last couple of hours, which would mean less of an impact around here, if that trend continues. there it is, 140 miles an hour. so it's down a little bit, and it will probably go down a little bit more as it grazes the eastern coast of cuba, over a mountainous area.
5:03 pm
that new track has a category 4 scraping the east coast. the chances of it making landfall in florida are higher than even a couple of hours ago. the probability of that right turn looks higher than a couple of hours ago. as this cold front that's approaching has a better chance of pushing the storm to the right. it could be making more of a left turn and a sharp ever left turn than what the previous models were calling for. >> nbc 10 is staying ahead of that hurricane stormranger10. it is the only mobile radar unit in america. keep watching stormranger10 for complete coverage. i'm so happy to be here. i have really loved pennsylvania.
5:04 pm
>> from hollywood to the keystone state, that was actress elizabeth banks giving pennsylvania a shoutout. the campaign with hillary clinton and her daughter chelsea. it's a big day on the campaign trail, coming up tonight, the first and only bait between the vice presidential candidates. >> nbc 10 has live coverage on both of these events. clinton had some help on stage today. >> reporter: yeah, she had her daughter chelsea stage, a lot of families, many of them bringing their young children, to this q & a with hillary clinton, mentioning donald trump absolutely zero times. as this town hall focused on families, hillary clinton bringing her daughter chelsea stage, trying to reach voters out here in the suburbs like working moms with young children. >> i don't understand why we
5:05 pm
don't have paid family leave in america. every other advanced economy does. >> i love her stands on family leave equal pay. >> reporter: her opponent donald trump has also pitched a plan that includes family leiave and child care. today clinton went even further pushing for free college tuition. >> if you're in a family that earns $125,000 or less, you will be able to go to a public college or university tuition free. >> so i just want to ask you -- >> reporter: clinton also took questions from the crowd, including from this mother who complained about how young black people are treated by police. >> we need to work together on deescalating situations, because remember, people are scared on both sides.
5:06 pm
>> reporter: clinton only said she's focused on pennsylvania. >> we're going to work hard the next 35 days. >> reporter: and clinton did briefly allude to her opponent when a teenaged girl asked her about the body shaming of young women. the donald trump campaign criticized hillary clinton saying that pennsylvania voters want a change in the status quo. donald trump has made stops in delaware county, twice recently to lay out his plan for affordable child care. his daughter ivanka came with him to ashton last month. trump guaranteed six weeks of guaranteed maternity leigh. the fracnklin and marshall poll shows clinton with a lead among likely voters.
5:07 pm
also tonight, a vp face-off in virginia, tim kaine and mike pence will meet on the debate stage tonight. lauren is life at the site of tonight's debate at longwood university. both candidates will be on the same stage, but one might have a tougher job on his hangz. . >> reporter: here at longwood university point out that he thinks it was mike pence who may have more pressure tonight, both because of hillary clinton's lead in recent polls and also because of her performance in the presidential debate. also tonight, spot light on those vice presidential candidates. >> when they take the stage in farmville, west virginia, check out the virginia tim signs outside the hall. >> used to seeing him sort of
5:08 pm
just walking down the street with no entourage and just a regular person. and now when you see him, he's got a big crowd. >> reporter: what is he like as a debater? >> he's very unflappable, level headed, there's not really anything you can say shake him up or get him off his game. >> republicans looking to use pence's home state experience against him. >> pence has a proven reported, while kaine doesn't. >> i think you look at what governor pence has been able too do, he has a positive record, he's been able to bring change to the people of indianain', while you look at still kaine and he's failed the middle class of virginia. >> the virginia state legislator who you heard from in that piece, she's been friends with tim kaine for a while.
5:09 pm
he even officiated her wedding and she will be inside the debate hall fond. not very many people will be able to do that, only about 300 will be able to watch in person. coming up at 6:00, a look at the expectations from both parties coming up tonight. and after tonight's debate, the vice presidential candidates are headed back to pennsylvania, mike pence and tim kaine will be in the keystone state tomorrow and thursday. philadelphia is on kaine's itinerary. count on nbc 10 for lye in depth coverage of tonight's debate. you can watch it 9:00, right here on nbc 10. then we'll have all the reaction on nbc 10 news at 11:00. now to new developments in last week's deadly new jersey transit crash. investigators have recovered
5:10 pm
what could be three key pieces of ed. and they made that announcement in the last hour. >> jim, what have you learned? >> reporter: investigators now have the data recorder and a video recorder from that transit train from the front car in that crash in hoboken. one woman was killed, you may recall, 114 other people hurt when that train slammed into the hoboken station last thursday. the two recorders recovered today have now been septembnt o a lab along with that cell phone. a data reporter in the back of the train wasn't functioning at the time of the crash. those recorders, when they're working can estimate how fast the train was going. the train's engineer has told investigators he has no memory of the crash.

l still ahead, at nbc 10 news at 5:00, an exclusive, we take you inside the courtroom as a devastated mother faces the teenager accused of killing her 8-year-old daughter. plus, a smell, a sound, then an explosion. more on the moment that led up to this devastating skaechb scene at a home in new jersey.
5:13 pm
5:14 pm
in north jersey, two homes were reduced to rubble today. firefighters were called to this home in patterson county for a possible gas leak. residents evacuated, even firefighters backed off, when they heard a hissing noise coming from one of the homes. witnesses say the homes then exploded. we have seen over and over how natural gas can turn dangerous very quickly. these are just some of the -- since the beginning of last year, according to pse & g, more than 80% of households use gas as their main source of heat. if you smell bagas, hear hissin get out as quickly as possible.
5:15 pm
do not use your cell phone in the building. of those could create a spark that ignites the gas. in just a new hours, the candidates for vice president will square off in their first and only debate. this is a live debate inside the room where that debate will take place in longwood university. you can see that debate right here on next 10 starting at 9:00. and joining us now with a look at tonight's debate is mark murray. >> both candidates whether have to make their case tonight, but it appears that mike pence might have the tough eer task here, d you agree? >> number one, donald trump has had a very rough week, so mike pence is going to receive a bunch of questions about donald trump and his tax returns or the fight that he picked with the former miss universe, so those
5:16 pm
will all be fodder at tonight's debate. a second reason mike pence might have a lot of troubles, is that before he was tapped to be donald trump's running mate, he has agreed with issues that donald trump has made in his campaign. i'm talking about the tpp trade event, and mike pence voting for the iraq war. and in some of these issues, mike pence has been on the other side. >> we also have new numbers from the nbc news/sure raymond i can poll has clinton at 46% and donald trump at 40%. >> hillary clinton does have a lead in in contest. i think even more importantly in your own state, there were two polls that came out stayed, showing her up 9 points or ten points in pennsylvania so that is where the race is right now. it remains to be seen if this is
5:17 pm
a little bit of a high from her debate performance. or if 1somehow the numbers go down again. we'll have to wait and what happens after the next big debate on sunday night and see if donald trump is able to improve there. and for full coverage and analysis of the presidential race and tonight's debate, stick around for nbc "nightly news" with lester holt, that's coming upping of at 6:30, only on nbc 10. well, we are all watching to see what happens with hurricane matthew, locally, though, our weather kind of cloudy today, it is cooler outside today, tomorrow 1 going to be another cool day, but this is actually a live look at how rehoboth beach, these clouds have nothing to do with hurricane matthew, matthew
5:18 pm
is still very far down to the south. here it is spinning, the center of it fairly clear, this is the eye of the hurricane, it's nearing guantanamo as a strong category 4, but as you can see, very far to the south, it will be heading to the bahamas as we go through the next 24 hours. now we're taking a close up look at florida, so if you have any plans to go to florida over the next couple of days, you'll have to rethink this for south florida from cape canaveral down to the miami area. so they are anticipating potentially a major hurricane impacting parts of florida. now looking at hurricane matthew, this is the most updated stat information from the national hurricane center. max winds 140 miles an hour. that makes this a category 4 hurricane. currently moving into guantanamo, winds very strong, very dangerous. but those winds could certainly be holding up as this thing
5:19 pm
nears florida. so really something to keep an eye on for much of the southeast, possibly category 3 or 4, by the time it gets close to the miami area, then potentially ending up on the east coast of florida, maybe as a major hurricane by friday afternoon. so this thing has picked up more speed in the forecast track. another thin here, yes, we are in the cone, but we do expect this cone to potentially shift a little bit more offshore. the kumplt track saturday afternoon, possibly off the north carolina coastline, then continuing offshore. we believe it's going to follow maybe a little more of a track that we have these dashed areas, that would put it a little bit farther south, makie ining more turn as it passes by north carolina. the computer models all agree
5:20 pm
that it will be impacting at least some part of the north or south carolina coastline. and a lot more of these models that forecast where the storm may go, a lot of them are farther offshore than they were earlier today. that's another thing to note, with our local weekly forecast. we'll be watching that very closely for you. on saturday, that's going to be due to a cold front. not much matthew. temperatures right now, though, locally, they're cool, about the mid 60s, take a look at the temperatures for tomorrow, we will be dry, we'll see more sunshine, so really a nicer day than today. fairmount 70 degrees. sunny skies developing, if you are in vorhees township, long port 68, dover coming in in the upper 60s. here's your ten-day forecast showing the weekend and what we expect from matthew. so we go through the rest of
5:21 pm
this week, we'll be back into the lower 70s, as of now, it looks like we could be on the dryer side, but it all depends on the track of this storm. if you're along the shore, there will be strong winds. then we go into next week, looking pretty good with your ten-day forecast, back up into the upper 60s, but we still have many days before we expect potentially an impact, but that all depends on the track and there's quite a bit of time for that track to be adjusting based on what else is happening in the atmosphere. we'll take a closer look and another look at matththew comin up.
5:22 pm
planned parenthood. i would support legislation in pennsylvania that would ban abortion and i would suggest we have penalties for doctors who perform them. would you put people in jail for performing abortions? at some point doctors performing abortions i think would be subject to that sort of penalty. dscc is responsible for the content of this advertising.

>> using legal methods and wouldn't anybody elsewhere done the same thing? >> this is a man who spends hours every day proclaiming his great business skills and success. he lost a billion dollars, and that's hard to do when you're running casinos, but it demonstrates unequivocally that he was a failure at business and he wrecked businesses and by wrecking his businesses, he wrecked the lives of his workers, he stiffed contractors and he generally disregarded the well-being of the communities in which he operated. i have said repeatedly we have got to close all the loopholes that give tax breaks to all the wealthy corporations, and i will
5:31 pm
certainly do that. but there are some very successful business people in america. i was in omaha and warren buffett there's more in there that demonstrates that he did business and he had records behind him and he lost a billion dollars that should not be available to him. so i'm very clear in my assessment that someone who is claiming to run for president, based on his business success, should be judged by that business and i think what we're finding out is deeply troubling. >> i met a man at a rally who said he was a long time republican. i said why are you here? he said i'm a long-term republican who is undecided and i want to hear what hillary clinton has to stay.
5:32 pm
>> get ingting a lye look at hiy clinton taking questions from reporters. >> we'll keep monitoring that news conference, you just heard her address that tax form that the "new york times" reported just a couple of days ago on friday, the fact that trump had lost 9$916 allegedly million in 1995. and had essentially for 18 years paid no taxes. at least that's what they allege. we're going to stay on top of this, as soon as we know much more about that, we'll continue to give it to you. we're going to talk a little bit more about the storm we have been following, the latest on hurricane matthew. >> this is matthew, pray for us! >> matthew is churning past western haiti and heading towards cuba. this is amateur video given to
5:33 pm
local media after the storm made landfall in haiti early this morning. >> matthew is hovering around the eastern shore of cuba, it's expected to move on to the u.s. where both a hurricane and tropical storm watch are in effect for florida's eastern coast. >> let's go to jamey in nassau, bahamas. >> what can you tell us about how they're getting ready for this storm. >> reporter: keith and denise, there are roughly 700 islands in the bahamas and hardware shore stores and supermarkets are running out of supplies. >> nassau, new providence, the capital of the bahamas, residents are are struggle to get ready for the storm. the lines inside are long, the lines outside are even longer.
5:34 pm
rain and flooding are the big concern here. >> this is going to be a major one. >> hurricane matthew slowly swirling through the caribbean, then past cuba, when it hits here, it will bring a surge of rain of 10 to 15 feet, and wind gusts up to 130 miles an hour. >> the bahamas ministry of tourism says it's first priority is the savity of both residents and visitors, in the grand bahamas, 1,600 are being evacuated. it's too late for the smaller islands. >> there are some who opt to stay with us through the storm. for those who wish to stay every measure is being taken by the
5:35 pm
hotels and the tourism offices to ensure their safety and security. >> those who are still here are making a mad dash to the grocery store. >> me and my wife have a business, we're trying to get everything started before wednesday. >> reporter: the airport here in nassau, closes tomorrow. most of the airports in the bahamas are scheduled to reopen sometime on saturday, if everything goes as planned. as for the visitors who are stuck here, if they don't already have a place to say, the islands say they have hundreds of visitors who are going to ride out the storm. >> it is an important piece of information right there too. and the first alert weather team has been breaking down a new model. >> the update potentially will
5:36 pm
bring it through parts of the carolinas, as we get closer to the weekend. so an impact to the united states is expected in some way, here is a look at matthew right now, though, it's spinning in the caribbean still and guantana guantanamo, right near the eye of this storm. strong category 4 hurricane moving through cuba at the moment. winds sustained at 140 miles an hour at the center. we don't expect much weakening as it enters the bahamas, still expected to be a major hurricane. there you see the hurricane warnings out for the bahamas, parts of cuba, his sppaniola un those hurricane warnings. this could potentially be extended depending on what happens. hurricane conditions expected in some areas or could be expected north of miami, south of that tropical storm watch is up. so florida is bracing for potentially at least some part
5:37 pm
of what could be a major hurricane. we'll have to see how close it gets to florida, but at this point, this is the most updated track from the national hurricane center. by thursday afternoon into friday afternoon, crossing over the bahamas, as a major hurricane and there you see the eastern half of florida is in the cone, so that's why florida is bracing for some impact from this storm. at that point. the dashed arrow line, that's we expect it to happen according to various computer models. we'll tell you what you can expect for your weekending up. >> and coming up all new at 6:00. a delaware man helps start

now to an nbc 10 exclusive. a camden teenager answered to charges today for the murder of a 10-year-old girl. >> sidney long has been following the case from the start. >> reporter: only nbc 10 has this video of 18-year-old tyhan brown during his formal arraignment. he is charged with the homicide of 8-year-old gabrielle hill-carter, during what prosecutors say was a gang gunfight. gabby's mother sobbed as the charges were read outloud. >> i wanted to walk out a couple of times, looking at him.
5:46 pm

5:47 pm
about where he was that night until there was an fbi search of his cell phone that placed him on the very block of the murder at the precise time bullets were flying. >> reporter: prosecutors say two more shooters were on the scene that night and they will be facing charges. well, today, a cooler day, the clouds are still with us, but those clouds are not from what we have been and still are watching down in the caribbean, that's a different system. but matthew, that's the one we're watching as we go through the rest of this week. everyone really has their eye on matthew, especially in florida. still a category 4 hurricane, we could be seeing winds near 130 miles per hour as it gets closer to florida, that will of course depend on the -- i'll show you
5:48 pm
the track in a second, but we do expect a little bit more of a right turn with this as it gets closer to the carolinas, as one update that we did see today in some of the computer models. i will show you that in a second if that trend continues, we will have les of an impact locally, which would be your weekend weather. so all eyes are on matthew, not so much right now, here's a live look out at center city. cloudy skies, not from hurricane matthew, but we're dealing with more clouds moving in from the atlantic, the clouds are not bringing us the rain, don't expect the range for tonight. and the rest of your forecast, it looks really good. we'll see more sunshine tomorrow. temperatures will still be feeling like fall. now we look at hurricane matthew down in the caribbean, the center of it nearing guantanamo. still a very powerful category 4 hurricane. the bahamas under hurricane, now
5:49 pm
we have seen a hurricane watch extended farther toward miami. and we have a tropical storm watch even farther south than that. so this will be the time frame of about thursday to friday for florida and florida really keeping a close eye on it because look at what the track's doing, max winds 140 miles an hour. the track puts it near the bahamas, potentially still as a category 4 hurricane, then maybe category 3 as it gets closer to cape canaveral, the tack does include the eastern half of there 24r, there is preparing for the storm and really bracing for it by the end of the week. then we see it move up towards the carolinas by saturday afternoon. it won't be closer to us until about sunday afternoon. but at this point, we're watch for any turn that could put it a little bit farther out to skae. if this storm starts to slow down a built, we would expect
5:50 pm
more of a turn off the coast of north carolina, just like we have these dash lines sand this cold front would kind of help to block it from moving into our area, so if that general trend continues, we may see it 340ing farther off shore. but this is something we're death watching and keeping an eye on as we go through the rest of the week. lots of computer models forecasting this storm by about saturday, near the carolina coast, a lot of them on that, but then we're watching for any turn out to sea, a lot more of those computer models have shifted it farther out to sea as it comes closer to us. if you're in allentown, 72
5:51 pm
degrees. 67 dover coming in at 68 degrees. the rest of your week is going to be beautiful, temperatures getting into the upper 70s in philadelphia, friday low 70s at the shore. and what we're saying right now, saturday that rain chance is going to be mostly because of a cold front moving n saturday along the shore, we could see some wind and rain, but as of now we're really watching for this track of this storm, offensi if it's farther south, farther offshore, we'll have less of an impact. here's a look at what's coming up on nbc nightly news. >> ahead for us, sheena just showed us the latest tracking on matthew, we're covering the evacuations now planned for south carolina, other preparations taking along the southeast coast, plus our report from haiti which just took a damaging. we'll preview the challenges in the two vp candidates as they
5:52 pm
prepare to face-off tonight. and ben stiller's health scare. also tonight we see it on the football field, about this time every year. >> those pops of pink how football teams raise awareness about breast cancer and now the eagles are taking that mission off the field. that story is next on nbc 10 news at 5:00.
