carolina could be starting to feel matthew's wrath coming up in the next 48 hours. the storm made landfall in haiti this morning and hammered cuba this afternoon. and causing a bridge collapse. our own hurricane expert nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking where matthew is right now. >> unfortunately, we haven't seen the worst pictures out of haiti yet, that may take a stay or two to show you all the damage. this is a very large storm, compared to the state of florida. the eye not quite as clearly defined as it was earlier, so it may not be quite as strong a storm and the wind field as come down just a little bit. but hurricane watch has been issued from ft. lauderdale area all the way up daytona beach. that's until friday morning, and a tropical storm watch from miami down to most of the florida keys.
6:07 pm
they could be upgraded to warnings. now the track took it right over the western tip of haiti, now it's just about right on the eastern tip of cuba. and unfortunately, that leaves a lot of the circulation over water so it can't weaken that much. if it was going over those mountains, it really would weaken a lot more. so the latest is that there's a category 4 threat to florida. at least to parts of florida, but florida east coast to be specific. more of a right turn in the track, after the carolinas, that could have an impact on our weekend and could help us out if that trend continues. 140-mile-per-hour max winds now moving north at 9:00, just east of guantanamo bay and it is predicted to be a category 4 right up to the florida coastline. that's over 130 miles an hour. this is the track, my projection

watch from miami down through most of the keys. now the latest this afternoon is that the increased threat to florida of a category 3 or even a category 4 hurricane with over 130-mile-per-hour winds, that's possible and the u.s. hasn't been hit by a major hurricane a long, long time. the right turn once it gets to the carolina is more likely than it looked this morning or yesterday. and that could cause less of an impact around here if that trend comes. could still get some rain out of it. some went out of it. some coastal flooding out of it. but not as bad as of course if it would come closer. now the spaghetti plots if you've been following them have generally been offshore florida now they're generally on to florida. a lot of them are right along the south and north carolina coast and now a lot of them are farther offshore once it gets up

do our latitude than it showed this morning or yesterday. so the trend and some of the latest, most accurate computer models are showing it more of a right turn too. we hope that trend continues. 140-mile-per-hour max winds now, moving north at 9, this is the area of tropical storm force winds, this is not a point, so even if the eye passes well south and east of us, there's still going to be come impact. this is the track from the hurricane center, we showed you, possible category 4 by the time it gets to the florida east coast. and then there's that right turn that we're talking about. but i'm thinking that may be seeing an even more dramatic curve with this farther to the west in florida, which would be worse for them, possible direct landfall and a sharper left turn

when it gets to the carolinas. the best european model suggesting that. by thursday night, it's right along the florida coast, then comes up toward the south and north carolina coast saturday, but we're still starting off with a decent day, we could see some showers with a cold front coming in from the west, that's what's going to push this thing out to the east and there it goes, so by sunday, we may be seeing improving weather. we didn't get much improvement today, temperatures low to mid 60s throughout the area, with those low clouds coming in from the ocean, is not related to this at all. and you can see that that trend is going to be bringing dry air in here as well as we go into the next 24 hours. so some pretty nice weather. for a few days, tomorrow, thursday, friday, it starts getting warmer, saturday, we see some showers, with the cold
