the reverend jesse jackson there for the democrats. take a look. this is really filling up out here. come over from the debate hall and make it over to spin alley. i spoke with the communications director for tim kaine. as for all of that interrupting today, she defended him and said, well, you know, a running mate is supposed to defend their running mate, and that is what he was doing. i also spoke with a republican, the former governor of virginia, jim gilmore. he called tim kaine shouting tonight. two very different versions of what we saw here tonight. that was the one and only vice presidential debate. we'll be looking for the next one with these presidentialal candidates. for now live at longwood university, i'm lauren -- nbc 10 news. >> lauren, it's back to pennsylvania for both vice presidential candidates. after tonight's debate, both tim kaine and mike pence will be in the keystone state tomorrow and thursday. kane will stop in philadelphia wednesday night where he will speak to sheet metal workers.

pence will hold a rally at a volunteer fire department company. hillary rodham clinton heclintoo women voters today. she was joined by her daughter chelsea and actress elizabeth banks at a family town hall meeting. clinton then headed to harrisburg where she addressed recent comments about post traumatic stress disorder. trump was criticized after a period to suggest veterans who suffer from ptsd might not be as strong as those who don't. >> donald trump's comments are not just ignorant. they're harmful because they give voice to the stigma that has led generations of veterans to hide their struggles instead of getting life-saving help. >> trump made his comments monday as he discussed mental health services for veterans. trump himself was in prescott valley, arizona, for a campaign rally there tonight. the republican nominee told supporters he will fix the immigration issue and trump also touched on the issue of his tax

returns. >> she could have changed the laws when she was in the united states senate. she named a few buildings. that's all she did. the reason that she did not do that is her donors and contributors have used those same tax laws as i did. >> trump has scheduled stops in nevada tomorrow. he will hold a rally at the mow heekan sun arena on wednesday. we're just days away from trump's next face-off with clinton. the second presidential debate happens this sunday at washington university in st. louis. the candidate's third and final match-up is october 19th at the university of nevada las vegas. now to another big story we're tracking tonight. hurricane matthew. here is the view from nbc so esfirst alert radar as it slams into cuba as a category four now heading for the bahamas. at least nine people are dead across the caribbean tonight. in haiti 10,000 people have been spors eve forced into shelters. people have been urged to

evacuate coastal south carolina. now people in florida are preparing for the possibility of a direct hit. tonight we have live team coverage on the storm. we begin with nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena. i know you just received brand new information about the hurricane. tell us about it. >> yeah, jim. it is still a category four hurricane. it is still very strong at this moment, but we have an updated track now. i'll show you that in a second. guantanamo is seeing the brunt of this hurricane as a cat four. winds sustained at 130 miles per hour. it's a little bit weaker than it was earlier this afternoon, but it doesn't matter because it's still a major hurricane at this point. it's going to continue traveling in it the direction of the bahamas. that has not changed. by thursday night into friday night we're expecting it as a major hurricane over the bahamas. it's still including much of florida's east coast. a lot of prep going on in florida right now bracing for a potential direct hit from this storm, but then take a look at what happened now. if you are watching earlier this afternoon, there is less of our area in the cone now than there

was earlier today. a lot of the models are actually trending taking this storm farther off shore now than they were earlier because of a combination of this cold front approaching kind of creating a blocking mechanism and maybe the flower movement cause it to catch up which would then push it out to sea. it's something we're going to be watching and still quite a few days out. south florida really getting close. we'll watch that heading into the weekend going up. >> the damage in haiti, cuba bracing for matthew tonight. people in our area wondering if their loved ones are safe. nbc 10's brandon hudson is live in our breaking news center. brendan. >> the eye of the storm makes people stateside nervous.

the only way he can kmulktd with them is by calling their neighbor. >> reporter: one last push to baton down the hatches for a dangerous hurricane that shows no signs of weakening in the caribbean. in the bahamas it's a chance to stock up on sand bags and water jugs. people only have to look at social media to see the impact hurricane matthew caused in haiti. a resident's video shows part of the island covered in ankle-deep water. >> we're on eggshells here. >> reporter: ruiz cruise lives in north philly says his parents are in an area where resources are not readily available. >> it's not like you can go to home depot. they don't have this here. you have to rely on the government to give whatever they want to give to whoever they want to give. people in the southeastern u.s. -- especially in the bravard county barrier islands where the escape routes are

nbc 10's denise nakano is here with more. >> reporter: a u.s. government secretly scanned personal emails for u.s. intelligence. it's not sitting well with privacy advocates. >> i think that's really creepy. >> i'm very surprised and kind of disappointed. >> reporter: that's the reaction from local yahoo e-mail users after news broke that one of the largest providers of e-mail services secretly scan hundreds of millions of incoming emails, and according to reuters, handed them over to u.s. intelligence agencies such as the national security agency and fbi. >> the lack of privacy and not knowing that this was happening and then learning about it from, like, a third party. >> reuters says yahoo secretly built a custom software program to search all the customers' incoming emails, looking for items specified by the government. btb security is in the business of protecting privacy. >> from a privacy standpoint, it's concerning because it's

from a legal and a privacy matters viewpoint, people don't want the government looking at their emails. >> u.s. law allows intelligence agencies to order the release of customer data they believe could prevent a terrorist attack. yahoo says only that it is law-abiding and complies with the law of the united states. so should yahoo e-mail users be worried? >> if they're not breaking the law or they're not doing something that's questionable, it's unlikely that their emails would show up in any of these searches. >> reporter: but some say it comes do unto an expectation of privacy. >> yeah, i'm going to go home and delete my account. >> it's not known what information intelligence officials were looking for. security experts say there's not much can you do to protect your information, other than encrypting your e-mail, which is a complicated process. >> denise, thank you. more than three dozen people forced to find another place to stay tonight after this gas explosion levelled two homes in patterson, new jersey. going to show you some video of

the moment the blast happened just before 9:30 this morning right there. fire crews had just arrived minutes before because homeowners reported smelling gas. officials say a third home was seriously damaged in the explosion. 15 firefighters had minor injuries, but they're all okay. two people have been arrested in connection with the blast. that right there, that's the sound of matthew's fury as it pounded haiti with wind and rain. taking a look at nbc 10 first alert radar you can see the storm bearing down on the bahamas right now. nbc's jamie garola has the latest. what's the latest where you are? >> reporter: well, jim, it is on approach. the we understand is certainly picking up. we expect the severe stuff to begin sometime tomorrow. i want to set the tone here for the bahamas and read you the front headlines on the front pages of the paper.

this one says no island will be spared, and this one says direct hit for nassau. if that holds true, if hurricane matthew continues its course, this will happen for the first time in nearly 87 years. >> the hurricane warning is up and so are the shutters. sand bags are on the ground piled and stacked next to each other. some having to wait in long lines for hours. they brace for catastrophic storm. this island hasn't directly felt since 1929. the bahamas in full blown emergency mode. residents taking no chances and with less than 26 hours until land fall, they're in a race against time. >> no, we can't take chances on this one. we will ride it out and see what happens. >> with hurricane matthew zeroed in on the bahamas, it could wreak havoc on the islands almost a year after hurricane joaquin made its mark.

>> i can't believe it, but we have to respond. >> reporter: more than 3,000 visitors are still in the bahamas. >> it's not real at the moment because it's obviously -- everybody is preparing for something to happen. >> reporter: these two flight attendants trapped here after airlines canceled flights and airports closed. >> come tomorrow the expectation might turn into fear. >> reporter: islands-wide evacuations are taking place, and those who can't get out before matthew makes landfall can stay in shelters. >> we are praying for the best outcome, and once the all clear is given, we will turn our attention to assisting the recovery efforts. >> reporter: so the eye of the storm is forecasted to come right where we are in nassau, but tomorrow afternoon we expect to start feeling tropical storm force winds beginning as early as 2:00. that's the very latest from the bahamas i'm jamie guireola, jim, back to you. >> anxious times down south, and

sheena has new information on the track of the storm. sheena. >> we're all concerned about what it's going to do to our local weather, so based on the updates from the national hurricane center and many other computer models that have really been seeing the storm and predicting the path of this storm currently it is still that category four. still a threat to florida at the major hurricane. we are seeing a more likely right turn. the right turn will be putting it farther out to sea. that would be an eastward turn. in that case we would little to possibly no impact if the trend continues because at the same time we're going to have a cold front approaching from the west that will essentially start to block the system. we'll talk about your local weather real quick for the morning commute. we'll be cool. i'll talk about matthew in just a second. if you are heading out around 7:30, bus stop temperatures, kids might need a light jacket if you are in allentown. 61, philadelphia. 54 by 7:30. if you are in redding,

temperatures in the upper 40s. sunny and cool day tomorrow. more sunshine than today. we, however, will be staying nice and dry as we go through the end of this week. hurricane matthew still a category four. the center right near guantanamo and florida is preparing for this thing. hurricane watches and rarngz are out for south florida. tropical storm warnings are also out for south florida. they are bracing for winds potentially around 130 miles per hour because this thing does not look like it will be weakening much as it goes across the bahamas and then gets much closer to florida. here is a closer look at hurricane matthew. category four winds sustained at 130 miles an hour. moving to the north at 8 miles an hour. there you see it right around guantanamo, but the north movement is going to put it over the bahamas as a major hurricane. they don't see much weakening in this. that would be tomorrow evening right over nassau.

tomorrow 8:00 p.m. as a category four possibly. then there you see it much of the east coast of florida is in the track as a major hurricane. by friday evening. then there is the carolinas. you see more of that turn starting to happen, and if you were watching earlier this afternoon, you would have noticed there is less of our area now in the cone. there is the cold front i was telling you about. if it meets up with that cold front, it's a little bit slow. that cold front will help to block it from moving in. they'll be heading out to sea. here's a look at the spaghetti plot. a lot of them are in more agreement now that it's going to head out to sea than what we had earlier today. this is a good trend for us locally. still looking very bad for parts of florida, though. tomorrow here's a look at your highs by the afternoon. around 70 degrees and sunny. beautiful weather as we go to the end of the week. cup, though, we'll take a look at the ten-day forecast and see what your weekend looks like. stay tuned.
