to reach towns devastated by hurricane matthew. >> storm's now powering toward the bahamas and the u.s. coast. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is following matthew's track. >> where is the hurricane headed right now? >> it's headed right into the bahamas, there's plenty of warm water in its path, so it may very well strengthen again before it comes close to the state of florida, we saw the eye pretty clearly an hour or so ago, indicating some possible strengthening, we'll see what happens with the 5:00 advisory, to see if it has indeed strengthened already. from daytona beach all the way south to ft. lauderdale, that's a whole lot of real estate.

there's a thunderstorm watch, and a tropical storm warning from miami down toward many of the florida keys. so a lot of the state of florida is going to be affected by this. category 3, threat to the florida east coast maybe even back up to a category 4 by the time it hits, if it does strike land. the right turn that we have been talking about for days, is going to be even farther south than what we thought yesterday. which means little or no impact around here. the showers we get on saturday are from a cold front, not from matthew. 120-mile-per-hour winds, at the last advisory, moving northwest now, that is the change and the forecast takes it as a category 4 very close to the florida east coast. we'll talk more about the path, more about our weekend too, in

just a few minutes. our team coverage of hurricane matthew continues now, with nbc 10's keith jones. >> the united nations has actually dubbed this the worst humanitarian crisis to hit haiti since the devastating 2010 earthquake, this is video from cuba. 140-mile-per-hour winds, destroyed dozen of homes there. container cars, tossed around like paper bags, roads blocked by the storm, leaving the city cut off from the surrounding province. this storm was described as catastrophic in parts of haiti. communications out across most of haiti. a local haitian pastor who operates an orphanage in haiti,

he knows at least one of his churches flooded out. before the storm, he made sure the kids in the orphanage were taken to a safe facility. the hurricane is taking aim at the united states. as we told you a short while ago, president obama was briefed about hurricane matthew this morning at fema headquarters in washington. fema has deployed -- this was the scene in south florida today, drivers lined up waiting for gasoline, many gas stations ran out, shelters are already in place throughout the state for those seeking help and assistance. governor scott is warning residents to be prepared for the worst. >> protecting the life is the number one priority right now. if matthew directly impacts florida, there will be massive destruction that we haven't seen in years. again, this is a deadly storm approaching our state. >> the governor not minutesing

words out there, meanwhile in south carolina, over a million people are set to evacuate. bumper to bumper cars. residents rushing to gather supplies and gasoline. south carolina governor nikki haley has deployed the national guard. and it's a similar scene in north carolina. despite the models that north carolina will divert a district hit from matthew. they're evacuating the outer banks by ferry, heavy rain and strong winds are still likely. cruise ships up and down the east coast are being cancelled or postponed thanks to matthew. the ship was supposed to head to the islands from baltimore on sunday, but the ship instead, docked in new york city when the hurricane hit the islands. from new york, carnival plans an alternate trip to north, to canada, but because of the weather, that too has been cancelled. clearly everyone is taking the

picture from the area where the ship is docked. the ship can carry 700 troops, it will call the port of san diego home. yeah, beautiful day here, but we have a hurricane, a major hurricane to hit the eastern tip of cuba and now it has made the turn to the northwest in the general direction of florida, and of course that's bad news, it's going through the bahamas right now, the ocean, it is extremely warm, warm enough to support strengthening, a hurricane warning in effect for about 240 miles of the florida east coast. that's a tremendous area, it's going to be affected by this, and a tropical storm warning farther to the south. so we have a category 3 hurricane that may become a category 4 again, major threat to the florida east coast. like i said, this is going to

affect more than 200 miles, this is not just a narrow area that is going to be hit by this. that right turn that we were talking about yesterday and saying that it was likely that it would not impact us, does appear to be the case. little or no impact for us. but we'll get some showers from a cold front as we go through, into saturday. the spaghetti plots showed a lot of them right over land now, and breaking right up the coast and then curving right along the south carolina coast and then there's that sharp right turn. but that's not just it. look at this. as we go into early next weeks, a lot of them start curving it back to the south and even back toward florida. so we're waiting for a new advisory, at 5:00, we'll have the latest coordinates, the latest wind speeds, the latest

track. but there it is, category 4, or close to a category 4, very close to the florida east coast. cape canaveral sticks out there, and then close to south carolina, and then making that loop, but it weakens, once it does that. so even if it comes back to florida, it will not come back as a category 4. here's the future cast showing thursday night, the center of the storm moving right up the coast, extremely heavy rain and also a pretty big storm surge from jacksonville up into south carolina, the rain from this storm, not coming up our way, and there it goes farther to the south and east. and we end up with some nice weather sunday. 71 now, philadelphia, we're 72 in the lehigh valley, we have got sunshine all over the place, it's not going to stay that way. here comes some showers for

pokemon go, probably heard about it, it's become the fastest downloaded game in history. and now officials are talking about a pair of pokemon related accidents. a man was playing pokemon go while driving. and then later in the day a woman fractured her pelvis to avoid hitting someone who wandered into the street while playing that game. we all know hospitals, they can be pricey, of course. but one dad says he was charged nearly $40 just to hold his new baby. >> and now his social media post about the charge has gone viral. ryan grassley's wife gave birth last month in utah.

ryan says the hospital asked the couple if they wanted to have skin to skin contact with the baby. it's a common practice where a newborn's bare skin is placed against its mothers to help them bond. ryan shared a photo copy of his hospital bill. it shows $90 for skin-to-skin contact. his goal was easily reached and the post has been viewed nearly 3 million times. the hospital says there was an additional nurse in the room during the c-section and the charge is not for holding the baby, but for the additional care giver needed to maintain the highest levels of patient safety. maybe they shouldn't call that skin-to-skin contact. >> it's a category 3 storm which could be one of the biggest ever seen. >> hurricane matthew set to hit

before 5:00. you can see the small eye as it track s to the north and whiche. a huge area is under a hurricane warning, it's a huge area of coast line, and that's a huge evacuation. if the hurricane was coming in from the east, it would just be an area like this, but now they have to evacuate the beach areas for over 200 miles. then there's a hurricane watch, that goes past jacksonville up to the south carolina khocoast. that may have to be up graded to a warning. if it hits the florida coast, at least it could be a 4 if it does that. we talked about the right turn that it would take before it hit the carolinas would protect us from the storm, that certainly appears to be happening, that
