now thousands in florida are rushi ining to get ready as mat inches closer. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal arrived in miami around lunchtime today. randy, some areas of florida, south carolina, georgia being evacuated. tell us what you have seen so far. >> reporter: well, we have got voluntary evacuations here in broward county, we landed in ft. lauderdale about a few hours ago, the feeling at the airport, most people just happy to get here before those flight cancellations begin and that airport will likely shut down. since then we have seen long lines at gas stations and grocery stores and i tell you what, nearly every business here along the coastline, we're in deerfield beach right now is putting up hurricane shutters getting ready for the storm that should arrive sometime tomorrow afternoon. >> it's the last minute scramble in south florida, lines at gas stations snaking down the

street, some places even running dry because of such high demand. >> you to prepare for the worse, but pray for the best. >> reporter: with the threat of hurricane force winds, businesses begin boarding up their windows in deerfield beach. by tomorrow evening, wind gusts could reach hurricane strength along coastal towns. >> from 70 to 80 miles an hour. and gusting we never know, it can be a little bit more. >> reporter: the forecast is calling for matthew to hug the florida coastline, where today, beachgoers got a final day in the sun, keeping a close eye on the storm's track just in case it makes a sudden turn to the west. >> 60, 70-mile-per-hour winds here, i'm happy with that. >> keeping an eye on it and making sure it doesn't make that left turn? >> yeah and if it does, i still have time to get out. >> reporter: you can see the

palm frons blowing, evacuation centers in broward county will open around 9:00 p.m. tonight and then early tomorrow the last chance for residents to get ready for the storm hits the coastline. now to our own hurricane expert, nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz, what's the latest on whether matthew will hit florida. >> the storm surge may be going up a bit but that right turn that we were talking about at this time yesterday, that indeed is happening we're going to be clearing out here. this is matthew, and it's getting closer and closer to florida. it's going through the bahamas right now. we saw that eye quite clearly a couple of hours ago. hurricane hunter plane just came in, and it's no weaker or stronger than several hours ago.

but we have got over 200 miles of a hurricane warning in the florida east coast. that means tremendous amounts of people have to be evacuated, from ft. lauderdale, through west palm, ft. pierce, melbourne, even orlando in the hurricane warning and daytona beach and cape canaveral, we have got a hurricane watch through jacksonville, that's been extended all the way through the south carolina coast where evacuations are taking place right now. we have a category 3 or 4 threat, at least 120 miles an hour to the florida east coast. possibly a direct hit for the first time in more than 10 years and especially in this particular area, that rarely gets a hit. that right turn, even farther south than what we saw yesterday, and little or no impact here and any showers on saturday. we'll talk more about our weekend forecast and the full tack for matthew a little bit later.

we'll have live team coverage tracking hurricane matthew from haiti to florida, nbc news has crews everywhere. that's next at 6:30, right after this broadcast. in the meantime, we're following breaking news out of new jersey right now. sky force 10 out of this scene. a house collapsed in trenton, you can see the bottom floor of that house just left in ruins. drew smith joining us live from the scene. drew, investigators looking at a possible gas leak? >> that's right, jim, these homes are badly damaged and there is evidence of an explosion. a lot of people felt it. you can see from our vantage point, the front of that home is listing over and we're told both the homes have to be demolished. we're told the fire chief is around the back. new jersey state police, just arrived in the past ten minutes, in fact there's a dog they're bringing in, you can hear it barking now, they want to use a dog and a camera to see if anybody's inside the home.

squatters were known to be in there. three people were helped out of the occupied side. we spoke to neighbors who heard is boom and rushed to the coko collapsing home to help with the rescue. >> someone threw a rock at the window, someone threw a car tire through the window to make it even bigger and helped escort the two people that were in the house out of the house and i ran to my own house to get a towel for his foot because he cut his foot real bad on the glass. >> reporter: a lot of these neighbors are not able to return to their homes. they have this section of wayne avenue closed. they have shut down the gas because they do believe this was a gas explosion. they are having the dog check this out to see if there is anybody else inside. we're live in trenton, i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. to decision 2016, now a day

after facing of against mike pence in the one and and only vice presidential debate. mike pence is in harrisberg this evening. but right now, tim kaine is taking the stage here in philadelphia. nbc 10's brandon hudson is joining us lye at 2 sheet metal work's union. >> tim kaine will be speaking any minute now, he will be taking the podium right behind us where the president of the afl-cio is speaking, he'll be speaking about his support for hillary clinton and tim kaine. before the doors open officially, here in south philly, we saw a line of people who were clinton and kaine supporters who were outside. we saw volunteers from hillary clinton's campaign, as well as people from the american federation of teachers union. a couple of voters told us they're hoping to hear more about clinton's tax plan, since this is the first time we're hear from the vice presidential

nominee, since the debate, we asked people outside what they thought of tim kaine's performance last night. >> to be completely honest, i was not a kim kaine fan until last nights. i was still planning on coming out today just because he was hillary's vp. and really my opinion of him was reversed when i heard him talk about policies and i heard him talking about how excited he is to work with hillary. >> i never new how well he spoke and how well he handled himself. >> kaine was trying too hard, it just made him look so bad. >> reporter: again, we're coming back live to the president of the afl-cio, he's speaking, we are told a couple of congressmen will be speaking on the podium just before senator kaine does his speech. so we will have more on that tonight at 11:00.

all right, brandon, kaine's running mate, hillary clinton, she took the day off from campaigning to prepare for sunday's debate. clinton left new york to her washington, d.c. home to prep with her top aides. as for trump, he's claiming his running mate mike pence was the clear cut winner in the debate. this afternoon pence said that trump had the single most decisive victory in the history of vp debates. >> mike pence did an incredible job. and i'm getting a lot of credit because that's really my first so-called choice that was my first hire as we would say in las vegas. he was phenomenal, he was cool, he was smart. he was, i mean you just take a look at it. >> trump also mentioned vladimir putin today, he said, quote, i don't love, i don't hate, we'll see how well it works. we'll see. speaking of mike pence, he's

evacuation going on and the traffic jams are unbelievable already. and the storm is still barely into the bahamas as you can see. it's a long way from miami and it's going to take a while to get up there and there's nassau, the storm looks like it's going to go just to the left and just north of miami, all the way up the coast. normally if broward county is under a hurricane warning, people evacuate to orlando. but there's a hurricane warning for orlando. and the space coast that rarely gets hit by any hurricane, let alone a strong one. that tret is higher than it even was this morning. the right turn that we were talking about yesterday, that was going to spare us. yeah, that's going to happen. and the track even farther to the south. that means little or no impact

here. the showers on saturday and sunday are from a cold front. everything's the same as it was earlier this afternoon. so no changes yet. the track pretty similar, by thursday afternoon, near category 4 and not too far offshore. then friday morning, there we are, there's the space coast, cape canaveral has not been hit by a cat 4 ever recorded. ever in history. and jacksonville doesn't get it generally, savannah doesn't get it, charleston rarely gets it. these are rare places that are going to be getting hit. and this weird track, we were telling you about the right turn and the right turn keeps going to the point where some models take it all the way back to south florida. look at some of these spaghetti tracks. over the state of florida, making a sharp right turn,

that's why we're pretty sure it's not coming this way, then some of them start coming all the way back. around here, we got a beautiful day, the high was 71, we're going to be even warmer tomorrow. and then as we go through friday, it's a beautiful day too. saturday, not so much. there's some showers coming in, this is a cold front coming in from the west, and it's got nothing to do really with matthew. matthew is going to be making that right turn. and your weekend, friday is beautiful, it's kind of warm, almost summer like, saturday, a lot of clouds, some showers, not related to the storm. and then sunday, it's cooler, but we have got a lot of sunshine. so overall, it's a pretty nice forecast. we just have those showers on saturday throughout the area, pretty much as you saw. then we're cooler, 66 on sunday, monday, tuesday, we got some really nice weather here, all
