now showing you the scene in florida. gr you can see the rough surf there. it has already begun to approach. they have urged nearly 2 million people to evacuate as the storm heads towards the southeast storm of the united states. it is threatening homes in florida, georgia and south carolina. they say they are run out of sandbags in south carolina. swimmers venturing into the rough surf. all public schools and courts there are closed bought of the oncoming storm. >> you can see the strong winds blowing around trees. emergency workers say nassau and

hurricane matthew knocked down trees and homes. people are cooking and sleeping outside because their houses are unlivable. it killed 26 people and left 350,000 people. it is haiti's worst disaster since an earthquake nearly ten years ago. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking matthew. you told me it has now gone to a category 4. >> yeah. it strengthened again. we have nothing but bad news ov overnight into the morning because this hurricane is strengthening. it is still strengthening. it has been moving to the northwest. there is no doubt it will get very very close to the florida east coast if not a district hit. you can see the small eye very

clearly. it is right near nassau in the bahamas. this is the radar image. you can track the eye very clearly once it gets within radar range of florida. you can see those rain bands coming from the northeast. that's just the beginning. it's a pretty large storm, as you can see, if you have ever driven from miami up to cape canaveral. that's long drive. it is 190 miles. the eye is 190 miles from west palm beach. you can see the rain goes beyond that. just a couple hundred miles worth of rain that is moving in. the hurricane warning goes from near miami all the way through jacksonville but through south carolina and even north carolina may get some in later. this includes virtually every

city north of the city of miami. rapidly strengthening. category 4 now. it's definitely going to be hitting florida in a very bad way. a quick turn to the right. little or no impact for us. the showers are in the forecast on saturday are generally from a cold front. so 140 miles per hour moving northwest at 14. the pressure keeps going down. the forecast is for a category 4, 140, 145 miles per hour winds going along that florida coast and then starts that sharp curve going into saturday. it really has no chance of coming straight up the coast.

wait until you see the rest of that track coming up along with our weekend forecast in a few minutes. >> rt wilall right. thank you. it has grown more powerful as it moves into the bahamas. >> this is nasa bahamas. the winds are intensifying here. we are expected to get a direct hit right here in the capital of the bahamas. we are already seeing debris come out on the street. this giant sign, it was pressing it down and sticking it into the ground. big pieces of the roof are coming off and these are flying around along with clay roofing tiles that are peeling off of the hotel and allowing water to come through. a lot of these hotels are where people are staying, people who are locals here in the bahamas

have come to the hotels. either they don't have any where to go. they are injured, sick, elderly or disabled and they are in the hotels because the tourists are leaving. some couldn't get a flight out. some flight crews are staying in the hotel because their flights got cancelled. the prime minister of this nation said that despite a national offer to get everybody into safe shelters hospitals or hotels like this or schools there are still hundreds of people in the outlying islands. there are 700 islands who have chosen to stay. these are not big structures. he was very concerned for the

hundreds of people who are staying behind for what could be one of the most powerful hurricanes they have seen in 80 to 100 years here in the bahamas. back to you. we are live over breaking news where kelly drive just reopened minutes ago because of a deadly accident there. a man in his late 60s and early 70s was killed crossing the street there. the driver of the car, a 75-year-old woman, did stop. nbc 10's francesca ruscio is watching the situation for us. what can you tell us? >> expect delays in the area. a live shot. we are seeing that it has reopened. let's take a look at exactly where it was. we do see that it took place along fountain green drive. i would have said stick with

done to improve education nationwi nationwide. hi, matt. >> reporter: hi. he stood here in front of spring garden elementary. he was talking about education especially public schools. it was about what the teachers do and what parents need to do so that they graduate and become productive members of the economy. there are walk-ins happening in 200 cities. it's a way to bring attention to the need for more public school funding. we are just over a month from the election. the clinton campaign saw it as an opportunity to do this that not only has its fair share but also a battleground state. >> we have been here a lot because it's really important.

the keystone state is key. we liked what we have seen so far but pennsylvania is like every other state. we don't take anything for granted. >> and philadelphia teachers have been without a contract for more than two years. it was two years ago today they abruptly cancelled the contract. i spoke with jerry jordan after this visit. he says philadelphia needs help. >> very encouraging to have someone as busy as he is who could be any where but he chose to take time to talk about the importance of public education and importance of us valuing our children. >> reporter: and i also asked him if he had a chance to speak one on one with tim kaine about what philadelphia needs. he says he was not able to get that chance, that opportunity

well, here is the latest radar. you see the eye of matthew very clearly going just to the west of thnassau in the bahamas. the strongest part of the storm, you can see the red outside the eye. that is the eye wall. that is where the 140 miles per hour winds are. that's where the biggest storm surge is too. so as it heads towards the florida coast we are going to keep a close eye on that eye to see what part of the state is going to get hit the hardest. >> all right. we'll see you in a few minutes. a political shocker steve sweeney announced he is not running for governor.

he said he was considering a bid to replace chris christie. his decision clears the path who also worked at gold man sacman . he plans to loan $10 million of his own money to the campaign. a salem county man says he woke up in the middle of the night to find two armed intruders standing over him. the men tied him up with zip ties and dragged him into the bathroom. he says they asked where is he at and threatened to kill him. they ransacked the home. he says he was tied up for about 20 minutes and then he broke free. >> i was able to break my feet

free. the intruders went to the basement i made my move out of the front door. >> he says she not sure what the intruders were looking for or what they took from the home. so far there are no arrests. and implementing a new rule. transit agency requires a conductor to join the engineer when the train pulls into hoboken terminal. it will put a second set of eyes on the tracks when a train is pulling to stations where the rails end. last week's crash killed one woman and injured more than 100 others. matthew strengthened throughout the night and into the morning. it continues to find lower pressures and higher winds and the track is just to the west of

nassau. this is androse island. this tiny island to the east, that is not a good track here. with the eye staying over water that's not going cause it really to weaken because it's not straight going over land. here is the radar. once again, you can see it's going right between nassau and androse island. it is clear it will track north of miami north of the eye. probably even the eye goes north of fort lauderdale and west palm beach. it is a category 4 with 140 miles per hour maximum winds. it will likely stay at least that strong as it gets close to

or hits the east coast of florida. then tracks right along the florida east coast creating damage all the way up the coast and even into georgia and south carolina. for usually l to no impact. a cold front coming through. it will push it out to sea. the showers are from that front. 140 miles per hour max winds. it is moving a little faster than it has been. the pressure continues to go down. now, the forecast, 145 miles per hour hurricane friday at 8:00 in the morning right near cape canaveral. this area has never been hit with a category 4 in recordrd history. neither has jacksonville. jacksonville will be very close to it. friday evening 130 miles per

hour. south carolina close to it but category 2. then look at the forecast track. we have been telling you about this loop. it is likely to happen. the european model has been predicting this for days. it looks like it could hit florida a second time. it will be much weaker then. there are the spaghetti plots. you can see the molds very much agreement all the way with this track. look at how many of them come back to the southwest and many of them not only take action from miami but into the gulf of mexico. we are not going to hear the rest of this for kwiel a white. we are in the 60s across the area. things are very very nice around here. it will stay nice as we go into the weekend.

so friday it's 78. in philadelphia lots of sunshine. saturday is the cloudy day when we have shous. sunday we dry out. that cold front is coming through. the hurricane will be well south of our area. it will be a category 4 when it hits florida. with hurricane sandy, it was a category 2 and a category 3 when it hit cuba. >> it wasn't effecting near as big of an area as this will. because it is going right up the coast it will cause damage over a much wider area than sandy. the storm surge that caused all of that damage will cross many more beaches. >> all right.

south carolina. evacuation orders for south carolina goes into effect at noon. so far 175,000 people have evacuated the coast. they say anyone in an evacuation zone should not take the orders lightly. >> big concern that is we have are storm surges are going to go much further inland than people realize. that's a lot of water all at once. reports from daytona beach are getting stronger. sarah, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we are seeing the winds pick up on daytona beach. we are starting to feel the first outer rain bands as it

stay safe out there. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with our forecast, glenn. >> yeah. this is a large and powerful hurricane. no doubt it will come close enough to the east coast of florida to create some major damage. right now it is creating major damage in that saw. the eye goes just to the west of that island and you can see all of the rain between the eye and coast of florida. some of the rain bands already starting to come in. the eye about 170 miles now. it is southeast of west palm beach. that's a general direction. we wanted to give you an idea how close the eye is to this thing. hurricane warning go frs near miami all the way through jacksonville and all the way

well, we continue to see a strengthening hurricane getting closer and closer to the state of florida. it's really ripping nassau right now. some of the strongest part of the storm moving through. some of the outer bands are getting into the miami area and into west palm beach. you see this area? it looks like it has gone over. that's the strongest part of the storm. that's where the wind is 140 gusting to 170. you can see heavy bands starting to come onto the florida east coast. nearly 200 miles ahead of the eye. that's not just a point. that's a big storm. 140 miles per hour maximum winds right now moving to the northwest at 14. the pressure keeps dropping. it has dropped a tremendous amount in the last 12 hours or so.

again, that's bad news. that's an indication of further strengthening. the forecast has it 145 miles per hour right near cape canaveral. if it comes on land the damage will be way worse. it will be very critical. it just goes right up the coast. we have more problems. category 4 going to georgia. that state hasn't been hit by a direct hurricane since i think 1893, something like that. i used to live in that state. you can see near south carolina doing this weird loop. it could potentially go back down into florida and even into the gulf of mexico. seems pretty weird. watch this. this is very much agreement of that track. that's why we have high confidence that it's not coming

up our way. look at all of these solutions that do make that turn and how many of them are taking it all the way into the gulf of mexico by next tuesday. again, it's not going to be a cat 4 but it's going around far while. 68 degrees in philadelphia now. we are going well into the 70s. we have sunshine, low humidity. there's a front coming. you can see that we do have showers near chicago. that's the front that will be effecting us not during the day tomorrow, not early saturday but we do have some showers coming in. this latest computer model doesn't show a lot until sunday for cape may. for the weekend it's for a beautiful weather friday. lehigh valley at 78. much cooler on saturday with a lot of clouds and a few showers.

it's not going to be a washout. on sunday we are talking about dry weather, cooler weather. it's possible down by cape may and delaware beaches there could be some showers early sunday morning. but the ten day forecast looks like this. we have got the showers on saturday then dry weather and cooler weather coming in for sunday and monday then we start warming up a little bit. it looks like a relatively dry pattern going into next week. we'll be right back. i survived breast cancer. if the doctors hadn't caught it early i might not be sitting here. so i'm outraged that pat toomey voted to defund planned parenthood... which thousands of pennsylvania women depend on for cancer screenings.
