the clinton campaign brings another heavy hitter here to our area. right now at 11:00 we are tracking hurricane matthew. it is raking florida's atlantic coast. so far the eye has not made land fall. it knocked out power to nearly 600,000 homes. police say a woman died after having a heart attack. emergency personnel had to stop operations due to wind gusts. good morning. i'm vai sikahema.

people are hunkered down waiting for pelting rain to pass by them. we have a look at conditions at daytona beach. >> reporter: sunrise but no slow down on matthew's assault on our state. >> this is not over. >> reporter: the eye expected to press dangerously bringing the heaviest rain and raising the risk and fears of catastrophic storm surge. >> we are very concerned about the storm surge and the worst effects are likely to still come. >> reporter: the massive storm bringing massive winds and damaging rain. still at times wind gusts were so strong first responders had to get themselves to safety. power lines ripped from their polls across the region.

hundred of thousands left without power. many are riding out the storm in shelters. hundreds of pets housed with their own e still unsure when they will be able to go home. hurricane matthew expected to skirt the coast into the weekend. meteorologists say offshore doesn't mean any less dangerous. >> if you're in an area that you are told to evacuate i want to personally plea with you to get out right now. >> reporter: millions still at risk as hurricane matthew churns in the atlantic. daytona beach, florida. that explosion is part of the reason why it knocked down power lines and caused transformers to explode.

president obama reminded people in florida to remain vigilant. >> i want to emphasize to everyone that this is still a dangerous hurricane. the potential for flooding, loss of life and severe property damage continue to and people need to follow the instructions of their local officials. and glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the storm and has the latest on where it is going. what can you tell us. >> yethe center of it managed t stay offshore but it is very close. the eye is now 30 miles east of daytona beach. so all you need is a slight jog to the left. right now it's hadded that way.

that much of a difference is between getting an actual land fall with the biggest storm surge possible or staying over the water. you can see the track staying over water. here is the florida coast. it is just moving parallel so far. the problem is that the coastline starts to curve. this storm, if it continues moving north now you're threatening georgia and south carolina. 120 miles per hour winds. the pressure is up a little bit. that's a good thing. it's not strengthening. and here is the future cast showing the center staying just offshore but tremendous rains coming into georgia and south carolina. 10 to 15 inches of rain.

flooding rains across the area. this is grazing daytona beach. this is right near jacksonville beach this afternoon and then right over charleston tonight. so we may be having more problems in south carolina than we had in florida with the way this thing is tracking. we'll have a complete update on the track of that and our weekend in just a few minutes. all right. we'll see you then. thousands of flights are cancelled down south due to the storm. that means our area is dealing with those changes. miami flight stopped yesterday. orlando stopped operations at 8:00 last night. the airport does not expect to resume flight schedules until tomorrow. miami homing to resume flights today. some peoples decided to cut their florida vacation short. >> i was scared because i never

experienced something like that. i want today stay and see what would happen. it was interesting. >> we learned palm beach international airport is now back open. if you had plans to fly to florida there weekend check to see if your flight is still on. to give you an idea of how devastating this hurricane can be officials in haiti confirm 283 people are dead. they are helping people in the hardest hit places to clear away the damage from the storm. they expect the death toll to rise as they reach more remote areas. in the bahamas clean up is beginning. complete roads washed away and some people still trapped in their homes. a look from above in cuba showing the scale of destruction. you can see a collapsed bridge over a swollen river. many homes without roofs.

matthew moved through there on monday. no deaths reported in cuba. stay with nbc 10 so you can track the path of hurricane matthew. it gets you severe weather alerts and your first alert neighborhood forecast. let's bring in francesca ruscio for more on what's happening on the roads. what are you seeing out there? >> it is acting up around montgomery drive. it is a bit of a slow of a crawl. we are in the 40s right now. it will take you 17 minutes. i do have an accident in cheltenham. we are also seeing delays on 611. you'll want to take alternate routes. this is route 41 at route 42. speeds are in the 50s.

this is daytona beach. one death is being blamed on the storm in florida. they are warning people to stay off the roads because of flooding and downed trees like this. they ripped the trees right out of the ground. 2 million people up and down the florida coast are spending their friday with sfrends and families. pets are also needing a safe place to stay. a shelter is housing dogs, cats in addition to more than 200 people. they have determined -- are trying to determine if the hurricane caused this house fire. luckily no one was hurt. it was a complete loss. tell us what it's like there now.

>> reporter: well, what we know is that the eye of hurricane matthew is just to the east of us. we are seeing widespread damage across sent secentral floridame a -- florida. we are looking at one of many trees that have fallen over. also, take a look at this roof. pieces of it lay in the street. there is a light in the street as well. you can see how hard the palm trees are blowing. this is some of the damage we are seeing here where we are on the street. there is more all across central florida and this storm, vai, is far from over. >> thank you and stay safe out there. santos is recognized for the efforts to end a five decade

is extremely powerful. it is hitting cape canaveral right now. they are having some problems. the center only 30 miles off of daytona beach. look at the wind gusts there. gainesville at 35 miles per hour. savannah 35. storm has max winds at 120. it is moving north/northwest. here tis the latest forecast. category 3 near land and possibly on land in charleston, south carolina. that's a major hurricane direct hit, perhaps. so south carolina's west coast

might end up getting hit harder than florida's because the hand fall is very important. then it starts making that right turn and then makes the loop. it's weakening by the time it does that. the south turn, the west turn into the gulf of mexico. again, it is very weak by then. 67 in delaware. lots of sunshine here. there are clouds coming up from the south. we have a front coming in from the west. that's going to combine to add moisture here. as we look through saturday in the morning we are generally dry but the moisture does invecreas as we go through the afternoon. the question is how fast that

moisture clearing. some have it clearing and others don't. that's what we'll be watching. tomorrow the threat of showers starts at 11:00 and increases later in the day. we are talking highs in the 60s in chestnut hill. a lot of placing will be cloudier than today but things will get better for the rest of the weekend and next week. you'll see that later. > . public events for people of all ages. we have andrea here.

and we continue to track hurricane matthew as it hugs along florida's eastern coast. people are dealing with flooding and downed trees. we are in daytona beach to show us pelting rain and winds. >> reporter: conditions are starting to get worse and worse. the gusts of the wind start getting higher and higher.

we can already see debris on the ground. we can see the streets are pretty much empty. police have said this is an immigration zone. if you're in this area you have to get out because it's not safe for police officers to be able to reach people in the case of an emergency. at this moment we are right next to our hotel. the winds are starting to pick up. earlier today we did see when the roof fell from a local gas station. we saw the power go out early in the morning. over 200,000 homes already lost power. many people just worried what the effects of the hurricane is going to be. the hurricane is expected to come closest to daytona beach in the next couple of hours. we'll be here monitoring the situation. nbc news, daytona beach, florida

glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the latest. >> it continues to go parallel to the east coast. the center still about 30 miles offshore. you can see if it continues to the north what is in its way. part of georgia and south carolina and the back edge of the eye wall is now what is hitting daihi hitting daytona beach. this is the main eye wall. okay? when that hits the coast that's when you get some of the strongest wind gusts. that's why some times they get the strong wind gusts after the eye actually passes by. it's just coming from a different direction. look at this rain straight from the center all the way up to

charleston. that's going to be an issue. there will be flooding. 120 miles per hour max winds moving north, northwest at 12 miles per hour and then hurricane force winds grazing the beach right now. it will be very close to jacksonville. look at this. right on top of parts of south carolina. so the coastal portions of this state might end up getting hit really hard. i'll be back with more on the track and our weekend forecast in a few minutes. as it stands right now 2 million people have been ordered to evacuate. florida national guard has been alkt vated and more help on the way that's coming from our area. we have more on the dangers emergency relief workers are preparing to face. >> reporter: it may have been downgraded to a category 3 but

nbc 10 mobile app. well, matthew is unusually large. the outer rain bands is about 540 miles. it is bigger than the state of florida. as we went through the night last night this is the track. this is the florida coastline. it has gone parallel to the track. now getting a little bit closer daytona beach has made the big difference. now the center is 30 miles away. we are getting some of those outer eye wall thunderstorms and very strong wind gusts hitting daytona beach. it is getting pretty serious there. it will continue to spread up towards jacksonville.

it is 39 in jacksonville. winds will be increasing as the other winds decrease. 120 miles per hour max winds will be north, northwest at 12 and continuing. now the latest actually has it pretty much making land fall near charleston, south carolina which is a very vulnerable area to storm surge. conditions could be worse than what we have seen in florida by later tonight and tomorrow morning. then it makes that right turn we have been talking about for days. it almost makes an entire circle. it is weakening as it comes back. as far as the amounts of rain are concerned, the yellow is more than 10 inches of rain. south carolina and into north carolina, so there will be a storm surge. there will be tremendous rain and maybe 100 miles per hour

wind gusts. they are really getting it nailed tonight. 67 in philadelphia now. we have sunshine all over the place. temperatures will go well into the 70s. we have clouds to the south and clouds to the west with a cold front coming in. that front is what is pretty much saving us and pushing matthew back to the east. here is saturday morning. the shower threat increases during the afternoon, probably the greatest threat is towards dinner time especially from the philadelphia area south and east and it's possible that the rain lingering into sunday morning especially near the shore. the temperatures during the day today only 71 and 70 here and 69 in allentown. it is 68 in long port. these are tomorrow's temperatures. it will be much cooler than what we have seen over the last couple of days. now, saturday is a day of mostly

cloudy skies. temperatures are much cooler than today. sunday is cooler but it is generally dry except for the jersey shore in southern delaware which could see some of the rain from that front as it slowly moves offshore. >> you and i dealt with sandy four years ago. i know we have a lot that live in the areas where it's -- where matthew is hitting. i have to tell you, i don't feel that bad that we have such nice weather, that we are spared in this go around. >> yeah, and the florida east coast has been spared pretty much throughout history. it goes into the west rather than sticking out into the ocean and we very rarely get it. >> we keep our fingers crossed. we have people headed down there to help out. thank you very much. stay with us. we'll be right back.
