"nbc nightly news" will have much more on this interview and the fallout from it, that comes up at 6:30. i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. to the latest now on hurricane matthew. it continues to churn off the coast of florida. every hour bringing more damage. and it's far from over. the state has been feeling the impacts of the storm for nearly 24 hours now. some of the worst weather hit this afternoon. wind has knocked down trees, left a million people without power. let's take a live look at florida right now. you can see things starting to calm down, but it's still the strongest hurricane to strike that part of the state. we have team coverage tonight. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live on the space coast. but we begin with chief
6:01 pm
meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, is georgia and south carolina in its track now? >> yes, and the problem is the geography. the track of the storm was just off the florida east coast. now that it's turning north, look what's in its way. the southeast coast of the united states, south carolina, north carolina, right there. it's going to make a sharp right turn to prevent it from making landfall. in the meantime we've got 425 miles worth of rain, from the southern side of the storm to the northern side. that is a huge storm. the worst part is right there in what we call the eyewall, the northern eyewall. the heaviest rain, the gustiest winds. fortunately that has stayed offshore for the entire time. but it's only 40 miles, the eye only 40 miles off the coast of jacksonville. they've already had some record storm surge flooding in parts of the jacksonville area, despite
6:02 pm
it being offshore, and not being around the strong side. but if this goes straight to the north and goes into south carolina, you'll see more damage there than we've seen at any time in florida. here is the futurecast. you can see the heavy rain, some of that outer eyewall coming in during the night tonight, in the middle of the night, and possibly making landfall right here charleston. the latest on this storm, 110 miles an hour category 2. what's the difference between the 3 and the 2? five miles an hour. it's not that big a deal. it's still a very powerful storm. we'll have the latest on the track and our weekend forecast, coming up. >> okay, glenn, see you soon. the storm has been relentless along the east coast of florida even though it didn't make landfall. tonight millions are hunkering down. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal has
6:03 pm
been tracking the storm for the last few days. he made his way up to cocoa beach on the space coast. how is the damage there, randy? >> reporter: jim, the damage from here south has been pretty bad but not catastrophic. we've been seeing trees down and boats sufferage in the intercoastal. even now, hours after the storm has passed, you see the trees blowing in the wind. we're at a beach sidebar that sustained some serious damage on their docks. the owners just arriving, only able to get over the bridge now hours later to survey what's left behind. >> i think we scabescaped a pre big one here. >> reporter: florida avoided the worst case scenario, but matthew still leaving its mark. we found trees and road signs on the ground. >> you couldn't see much. all you heard was a bunch of breaking and banging of metal. that was kind of scary. >> there's high winds, hopefully
6:04 pm
that makes it. >> reporter: as hurricane matthew heads north, president obama reminding everyone about the dangers of storm surge. >> many of you will remember hurricane sandy, where initially people thought this doesn't look as bad as we thought, and then suddenly you get massive storm surge and a lot of people were severely affected. >> reporter: st. augustine up the coast from us is getting hammered. streets flooded. the water even went over the sea wall. our affiliate in orlando flew its helicopter late this afternoon to survey the scene. roofs ripped off a lot of damage. >> i can't replace my life, i can't replace the life of my employees or loved ones. >> reporter: evacuations are under way in georgia and the carolinas as matthew moves up the coast. and back here live on florida's
6:05 pm
space coast, we're starting to see some signs of life again, people coming back over the bridge, to see what kind of damage they sustained. we did see the sun come out for the first time in a couple of days. but a lot of concern from residents here for their friends and family up north, in places like jacksonville and daytona beach, especially as this storm continues to barrel there. the big concern going forward on the northern part of florida is those storm surges. live in cocoa beach, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> all right, randy. the hurricane has left behind devastation across the caribbean. the death toll in haiti has now jumped to at least 842 people. video from a coast guard helicopter shows hundreds of homes just torn apart. the united nations says some 350,000 people are in need of assistance tonight. matthew was the first category 4 storm to hit the country in more than half a century. "nbc nightly news" anchor lester holt will report live from florida tonight. look for team coverage from

6:09 pm
>> reporter: in the speech in front of 700 or more, students, faculty, and members of the public, biden urged people to register to vote and to vote democrat. >> he talked about substance. we're so used to hearing how many people interrupted everyone else. all that stuff is not important to the election. and he came on and talked about education, he talked about foreign policy. >> reporter: not everyone who wanted to hear the veep could get inside. this crowd is one of the largest ever gathered on the lower bucks campus of bucks county community college. >> we know everything about trump. >> reporter: biden told the crowd that a high school diploma is no longer enough in order to compete in a global economy. that's why the speech was selected here for a community college. biden touted clinton's plan to make college more affordable. in bristol, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. hillary clinton is off the campaign trail as she prepares for sunday's second presidential debate. she was spotted today at a hotel near her home in new york. it comes as her running mate tim

6:14 pm
that should really concern us. while on the senate banking committee, pat toomey voted to rewrite rules to help bankers like him ...and he tried to eliminate protections put in place to stop wall street's risky practices. pat toomey: looking out for wall street and himself, not pennsylvania. senate majority pac is responsible for the content of this advertising. new at 6:00, concern for philadelphia public schools. officials now testing for lead in water fountains. andrea cline-thomas has more on what it could mean for students. >> reporter: brenda is checking her daughter's book bag to see if the school sent parents any information regarding recent lead testing going on in the district. >> i understand dealing with it. but being that these are
6:15 pm
children that are going to your school, you need to make the parents aware of the situation. >> reporter: of the 22 schools and hundreds of water fountains tested, nearly 50 had high levels of lead. four of those were at kramp elementary. >> we immediately shut down the water fountains that were above the action level. >> reporter: the district is repairing, replacing, or removing the high risk fountains. did any of the water fountains present a true risk to students? >> no. >> reporter: the district is responding to scrutiny from city council, parents, and student groups to develop a comprehensive water testing project. the project would test every water fountain in the district in the next year and a half. >> i have two water bottles. i bring one and i put it in my classroom and have the other one in my book bag.
6:16 pm
>> reporter: it's an option brenda says she's considering for her girls. andrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. back to the latest on hurricane matthew. glenn is here now. that storm not taking that turn back out to sea just yet, right? >> not yet. it will eventually. the question is will it run out of room and hit south carolina before it does make that. and if it hits landfall there, there will be more damage in south carolina than what you've seen in florida. and you haven't even seen all the damage that's occurred in florida yet. you can see just how big this storm is. you can get an idea. florida, georgia, south carolina, north carolina. it's covering the whole area. that's how big it is. and the most intense part of that, right around the eye. this is called the eyewall. and fortunately it stayed just offshore. this is the track of the eye. this is the florida east coast. you can see how close it was and
6:17 pm
how it stayed 20 to 30 to 40 miles offshore the whole time. but it is still crushing northeast florida. you can see these big bands coming in from the northeast. but the heaviest, the eyewall is still out over the ocean. the problem is the eyewall moving to the north, guess what is in its way? south carolina. that's what we're going to be watching tonight. 110 miles per hour category 2 storm. it dropped five miles an hour. the categories have to start and end somewhere, but it's not that big a deal that it went from a 3 to a 2. as we go through the night tonight, it's headed towards savannah, then makes a right turn. how fast that right turn is will of course be critical. still over 100 miles an hour
6:18 pm
when it gets to south carolina. 90 miles per hour when it's passed charleston. then it makes that right turn. and then another right turn, and it's going around in a circle, but does not come up in our direction. like a typical hurricane would at this time of the year, come straight up. so that cold front that's coming through tomorrow is really going to save us. there really aren't any computer models that show anything else. coming to the east, then to the south. as unusual as that track is, there's a lot of computer models agreeing on that. maybe going to florida, maybe going to the bahamas. but it will be much, much weaker. 71 degrees now. we got up to 78 today, 74 lehigh valley. we have beautiful skies across the area. there's moisture starting to advance. we have a cold front coming in
6:19 pm
from the west. that's all going to combine to produce some showers. not so much first thing in the morning. it will be a cloudy day. then here come the showers. during the afternoon, the temperature only in the low 70s. and then the heavier rain tomorrow night and into sunday morning at the shore, it's going to be the heaviesheaviest. it will last the longest at the jersey shore. the weekend forecast only has rain on sunday. right there, jersey shore, southern delaware, much more sunshine, cooler weather, a lot of clouds saturday and some showers. but it's not a total washout. next in sports, will it be the motown blues for the birds or can the eagles soar above the competition? after this. katie v/o: she works hard.

against pay that helps hard working families get ahead. katie o/c: for my daughters and yours, i'll fight for equal pay for women. families need it; you've earned it. katie v/o: i'm katie mcginty, and i approve this message because it's your turn to get ahead. how do we measure greatness in how america? you? the height of our skyscrapers? the size of our bank accounts? no. it's measured by what we do for our children. the values we pass on. i've spent my life fighting for kids and families and it will be my mission to build a country where our children can rise as high as their dreams and hard work take them. that means good schools for every child in every zip code. college that leads to opportunities... not debt. and an economy where every young american can find a job that lets them start a family of their own. we face big challenges, but we can solve them the same way
6:22 pm
families do. working together. respecting one another. and never giving up. i want our success to be measured by theirs. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message.

6:24 pm
>> the eagles offense will be facing a lions defense that has given up five touchdowns to tight ends. that's the most in the nfl. so this is a really good time for the birds to have all three tight ends healthy for the first time this year. take a look zack ernst out there practicing. he says he will return sunday after missing two games. and doug peterson has been waiting to finally have them all healthy. >> i love using all three of our guys. number one, i think selleck planned extremely well. trey burton played consistently. now zack doing what he did in that cleveland game, it just kind of opens up a few more things out of that package run and pass for us. >> that's something we practiced a lot in the springtime, all of our tight end sets. unfortunately we haven't been able to use them the first three weeks of the season, trey went down the first week then i went down. it's tough seeing guys being out
