3:35 am
there is a thing called clean coal. coal will last for a thousand years in this country. now we have natural gas. and so many other things because of technology. we have unbelievable, we have found over the last seven years, found it right under our feet. good since we have $30 trillion in debt. they will make money, pay off the national debt, pay off the tremendous national budget which is tre mend poups we are putting our energy companies out of business. we have to bring back our workers. you take a look at what's happening it steel and the cost of steel and china dumping vast amounts of steel all over the united states. which essentially skilling our steel workers and steel companies. we have to guard our energy companies. make it possible.
3:36 am
the epa is so restrictive that they are putting our energy companies out of business. you just have to go to a great place like west virginia or ohio which is phenomenal or places like pennsylvania and you see what they are doing to the people, miners and others in the energy business, it is a disgrace. >> time is up. >> secretary clinton, two minutes. >> that was very interesting. first of all, china is illegally dumping steel in the united states and donald trump is buying it to build his buildings. putting steel workers and american steel plants out of business. that's something that i fought against as a senator and that i would have a trade prosecutor to make sure that we don't get taken advantage of by china on steel or anything else. you know because it sounds like you're in the business or you're aware of people in the business. you know that we are now for the
3:37 am
first time ever energy independent. we are not dependent upon the middle east. but the middle east still controls a lot of the prices. so the price of oil has been way down that has had a damaging effect on a lot of the oil companies. right? we are however, producing a lot of natural gas which serves as a bridge to more renewable fuels and think that's an important transition. we've got to remain energy independent. it gives us much more power and freedom than to be worried about what goes on in the middle east. we have another worries over there without having to worry about that. v so i have a comprehensive energy policy but it does include fighting climate change because i think that is a serious problem and i support moving toward more clean renewable energy as quickly as i can. i think by can be the 21st century clean energy super power and create millions of new jobs
3:38 am
and businesses. but i also want to be sure that we don't leave people behind. that's why i'm the only candidate from the very beginning of this campaign, who had a plan to help us revitalize coal country. because those coal miners and their father and grandfathers, they dug that coal out a lot of them lost their lives, injuryed. but they turned the lights on and so i don't want to walk away from them. the price of coal is down worldwide. we have to look at this comprehensively -- >> your time is up. >> that's what i proposed. i hope you go to hillaryclinton.com to see my entire policy. >> we have sneaked in one more question. it comes from carl becker. >> good evening. my question to both of you is regardless of the current rhetoric, would either of you name one positive thing that you
3:39 am
respect in one another? [ applause ] >> mr. trump, would you like go first? >> well, i certainly will. because i think that is a very fair and important question. look, i respect his children. his children are incredibly able and devoted and i think that says a lot about donald. i don't agree with nearly anything else he says or does. but i do respect that. and i think that is something that as a mother and grandmother is very important to me. so i believe that this election has become in part so -- so conflict-oriented, so intense, because there's a lot at stake. this is not an ordinary time and
3:40 am
this is not an ordinary election. we are going to be choosing a president who will set policy for not just for eight years but because of some of the important decisions we have to make here at home and around the world, from the supreme court to energy and so much else, and so there is a lot at stake. it is one of the most consequential elections that we've had. and that's why i've tried to put forth specific policies and planes. trying to get it off of the personal and put it on to what it is i want to do as president. and that's why i hope people will check on that for themselves. so that they can see that yes, i have spent 30 years actually maybe a little more, working to help kids and families and i want to take all that experience to the white house and do that every single day. >> mr. trump? >> well i consider her statement
3:41 am
about my children to be a very nice cliompliment. i don't know if it was meant to be a compliment. but i'm very proud of my children. they are wonderful kids. i consider that a compliment. i will say this about hillary. she doesn't quit and she doesn't give up. i respect that. i tell it like it is. she's a fighter. i disagree with much of what she is fighting for. i do disagree with her judgment and many cases. but she does fight hard and she doesn't quit and she doesn't give up. and i consider that to be a very good trait. >> thanks to both of you. >> thank you both candidates. thank you to the university here. this concludes the town hall meeting. thanks to candidates. washington university and to everybody who watched. >> please tune in on october 19th for the final presidential debate that will take place at university of nevada, las vegas. good night, everyone.
3:42 am
that concludes 90 minutes after feisty presidential debate. donald trump and hillary clinton shaking hands at the end. which you may have noticed this did not do at the beginning of this debate. i'm joined once again by andrea mitchell. andrea, it's kate snow speaking here from new york. your headlines out of tonight? >> well, that was one of the most contentious difficult, i can't even recall a debate ever in the american history with that much venom between the two. as you point had out, no handshake, which is traditional at the beginning. there was one at end pf. thanks to the questioner at the end creating a little bit of general tillity between the two. but he went right after her, bringing those women here today. and then calling bill clinton the worst abuser in political
3:43 am
history. worst abuser of women. he said that hillary clinton should be ashamed of herself for the way she had allegedly enabled her husband and victimized his victims. she went after clinton saying she has hate in her heart for the comment about deplorable. put clinton very much on the defensive about e-mails. and said if he is elected he would have his attorney general appoint a special prosecutor to put hillary clinton in jail. that's the kind of threat that former attorney general eric holder of clinton supporter albeit a lot of other people are twitter, shocked by. that's the kind of thing that happens in ukraine and iraq and other places totalitarian regimes but not in the united states of america. and he acknowledged he has not paid federal income taxes in large part. other than presumably payroll taxes. and it is just an amazing performance. trump very much better prepared. very, very tough on clinton.
3:44 am
and i would say that they were tough on each other. trump really gave the fact checkers a field day. saying she had never supported getting rid of carried interest and other tax laws. just one thing after another. syria policy. iran policy. things that have nothing to do with her current role as former secretary of state. but boy they really went at each other and a merciless debate and one that will really create even more toxicity and poison. and one other thing he threw his vice president under the bus saying they had not discussed what pence said about taking military action if necessary against both russia and assad regime to save aleppo and saying they had not discussed that and he disagreed with it. so he really cut mike pence off at the knees. >> kate, andrea, thanks so much. let me get over to hallie jackson in the spin room who covers the trump campaign.
3:45 am
a high bar going into this for donald trump. a lot of expectations on what he would say, especially with the recently released video and audiotape. i want to play that part of the debate where he was questioned by anderson cooper about the tape and about his comments on women and whether there were actions involved. whether he took actions against women. he called it locker room talk again and again and this is what he said when he was asked if it was more than talk. >> just for the record though, are you saying that what you said on that bus 11 years ago, you did not actually kiss women without consent or grope women without consent. >> i have great respect for women. no one has more respect for women than i do. >> so you didn't do that? >> you hear these things i said. ways embarrassed by it but i have tremendous respect for women. >> have you ever done those things. >> and women have respect for me. an will tell you, no, i have not. >> no, i have not is the final answer. hallie jackson, so many republicans watching to see what
3:46 am
he would say about that tape. so much attention over the last 48 hours. dozens of republicanes have defected from the trump campaign. don't want to support him any more. how do you think that will play tonight? >> i think what he are seeing is a bit of a mixed reaction. i had some as the debate is concluding texting that hillary clinton perhaps didn't do enough to separate herself, that donald trump was able to sort of fend some of these issues off. he had his weak moments. moments on syria we he split with his running mate is significant. democrats are certain to go after that moment as andrea was talking about when he essentially said would he get his attorney general to go after hillary clinton. that's raising a lot of eyebrows in some circles. but the most talked about moment will be the first 20 minutes when trump was asked about wlae describ described multiple times as locker room talk. one of the things we heard again and again prior to this debate
3:47 am
is seeing real contrition. mike pence, sources close to the indian governor saying that would be one of the key things pence is watching for tonight. over the next 24 hours, there are high level republicanes who had hoping to see trump's performance to see if they would also join in revoking support. i think we will see that over the next 12 hours. let me give you a sense over the spin room. pack taeds alwaed as always. donald trump will come out and talk with reporters. talk with people here. i'm told bay campaign aide, so will the women he invited tonight in the audience at the debate hall. kate? >> thank you so much. i want to go to kristin welker. kristin covers the clinton campaign. kristin, trump went there. he brought up bill clinton's past. just heard hallie say he may bring those women out again. in the audience bringing accusers into the spin room where you are. and what do you think the
3:48 am
clinton campaign will say about the way she responded to that line of attack? >> well, kate, first of all, just two characterize her thinking going into this debate, secretary clinton, i was told, was bracing for an all-out attack and that's essentially what she got. there was a lot of speculation she might be thrown off of her game. instead the two candidates had that vigorous back and forth that andrea just mapped out on a whole host of different issues. but you're right. that moment when donald trump raised bill clinton's accusers, fact they were there, in the audience, was a stunning moment. the campaign saying that the way she responded was steady. the fact she essentially stood up and say i got some of the facts wrong and proceeded to quote michelle obama who said when they go low, we go high and pivoted back to her own record so the campaign spinning that as a successful moment. i will read you what i'm reading
3:49 am
from one campaign official who said they predict a faster race to exits in republicans in the wake of this debate and because donald trump made that decision to bring out those women. we are here in this spin room as you say, kate and hoping to talk to some of them as they come in here, kate. >> kristin welker, thank you so much. to hallie jackson and andrea mitch ill. often assessments change over time. we will listen carefully to see what happens tomorrow. that does it for us after this second presidential debate. reminder, for the third and final debate ten days from now at university of nevada las vegas. for more analysis, head over to msnbc or nbcnews.com. tomorrow morning a full recap on the today show. see you at 3:00 p.m. eastern time on msnbc. for now i'm kate snow in new york. good night from all of us at nbc news.
3:50 am
i think tonight he's going to get questions. has he no policy depth. he doesn't know anything on these public policy issues. he's incoherent object national security issues. i think you'll see in this debate what happened in the last debate, just an inability to make it through 90 minutes. >> the best news would be for donald trump if the debate shifted away from talking about these tapes and onto policy where he is as bad as you said. >> arguably that's the case. the other thing we've spent little time talking about is that hillary clinton's e-mail -- more e-mail from the clinton campaign was released. in it she is talking to wall street one way and talking to regular voters another. this is getting almost no news, because, once again, we're talking about donald trump. >> blocks out the sun. >> he blocks out the sun, that's a great way to put it. >> heather, she is going to have to answer that question tonight, the personal -- the public and the private. you know what's interesting about both leaks is it made
3:51 am
everybody -- it reinforced a stereotype. with trump it reinforce add grotesque stereotype. with clinton it reinforced this politician stereotype. >> we elect politicians to office. >> how dare you. >> this is a different mom. trust me, i'm as progressive as anyone. my organization has been strug licks to reign in wall street. >> do you trust her. >> someone who goes to the center of the political moment has made it easier for progressives to know how to organize. i'm serious. in january we know that actually as opposed to what happened when barack obama came into office, this is what progressives talk about right now. nobody wanted to organize against him and hush him to the left. >> that's not going be the case. that's very interesting. >> i think it's deeply comforting for republicans that
3:52 am
behind closed doors that she thinks bernie sanders is nuts. for a lot of republicans that cannot vote for donald trump, i think it's comforting. >> by the way, let me put up our new battleground map. we put it up friday and now it feels obsolete. essentially we have, as you see, very few toss-up states, florida, north carolina, iowa, nevada, and new hampshire at this point. we don't have pennsylvania in there. we made this decision before we knew our pennsylvania numbers and it was reinforced there. where does this map go from here, steve? after this, what do you expect? >> it goes blue. yes, the bottom is falling out. >> what next? arizona, georgia, utah. >> let's step outside of the revelations on friday from the tape, and let's just look from the debate performance through the attacks on miss universe, the midnight tweeting. it's the worst week a presidential candidate has ever had in october in a presidential
3:53 am
election ever. period. >> there are going to be a lot more swing states come wednesday. >> swing states we've never seen before. kansas, watch out. who knows? >> there's been a lot of talk about senate republicans distancing themselves. john mccain is the only one that's really publicly done that in advertising. i think the question is, is it going to be tuesday, wednesday, thursday before the rest of those ads show up. >> and is it too late? >> let me pause there.-9 back in 45 seconds. back in 45 seconds. end game and what seth meyers - this costs you money and runs on gas. this saves you money and runs on calories. save the car for rainy days and long road trips. biking is better for your body and your budget. the more you know.
3:54 am
biking is better for your body and your budget. >> announcer: coming up, "meet the press" end game brought to you by boeing, building the future one century at a time. >> let me finish the discussion. i cut you off. we wanted to do that. can democrats turn this htmome heather, into a wave moment? >> it needs to be, because the actual problems in our country are actually really urgent. one thing, if you step back from all the mess, all the unfitness of him as a candidate, this election has shown that the donor class has broken away from working and middle class majorities of both parties.
3:55 am
both sanders and trump have shown that. can we continue that into policy i think is the qñawáion. i democrats take back the house. if you look at polls you put up from pennsylvania and florida earlier, there's a question there. only 4 and 5% respectively are willing to change their votes. yes, that was before "access hollywood" tapes. people are really dug in. it's hard for me to imagine that while donald trump may lose a few points here that it's going to be quite as wide as we think it is sitting here today. se pennsylvania and florida, 12 se point lead for hillary, 4 point over toomey, meant a lead from a candidate democrats are walking away from. >> inside party, hit the emergency button. we're at that hour now. chairman priebus has some enormously difficult deciding toss make monday morning to see what he can save and begin the
3:56 am
prospect of rebuilding the party after what's in be an armageddon moment on election day. >> i think we need to -- we don't know about the wave yet because we don't know about knowns, unknowns. what happens when more things -- if and when things come out as we've been told. what happens if it turns out donald trump wasn't all talk and no action but women come forward and say he grabbed me there. and.áhe question of how quickl and how soon republicans renounce 'ctrump, i think the e boats are getting awfully full. >> i do think in tonight's debate and donald trump is the wrong person to do this, but hillary clinton has never been asked about)/p the way she described the women who accused bill clinton, all alleged, but near 20.
3:57 am
i do. i think there's no way in the world donald trump doesn't bring that up and it doesn't become a shouting match pretty quickly. w always wondered i has to have an!u answer that'st a deflection. >> her answer is my husband is not on the ballot. i am. >> but4g5át is and she handled that in a way -- >> my husband cheated on me and i stayed with him. you cheated on your wives and left them. >> interesting statement. all right. let's lighten the mood here a little bit. our buddy seth meyers is bringing his late night show to d.c. all this week and i sat down with him on friday. we talked about donald trump and this specific joke he made the last time he had a big deal time in this town. >> donald trump has been saying that he will run for president as a korepublican, which isewç
3:58 am
he was running as a joke. >> obviously at that moment you didn'tc÷ know his expression th night. >> i do now. >> everybody else -- i'm sure you've seen this clip. there's been reporting and speculation that said the ridicule he receivedúú gave him more drive to prove everybody wrong and run. >> i -- sincerest apologies to everyone if that's the case. >> do you feel like there's a duty about this election? >> i don't feel -- i also don't think i could fulfill it if there was a duty. i don't think we have as much influence as every now and then people will write or claim taos have. yeah, i don't feel it's a duty. i genuinely enjoy doing it, though. >> that was about seth meyers and whether comedians in this last month have a duty to denounce trump more so than ever, or whether you just be
3:59 am
funny. >> at least we found somebody who is enjoying this campaign. >> it is hard. >> they are not journalists, they are entertainers, and their job is to entertain. it's not to, you know, put in the minds of the public, you know, thingd/d about candidates which they are not qualified to be putting forward. >> but they do reveal an essential truth about these candidates. so from a political adviser perspective, we try to mitigate their weaknesses. they reveal who they are. that's part of this process. it's a full reveal. >> they are the mri technicians of american politics. programming note, msnbc will have live coverage of a town hall-style face-off between donald trump and hillary clinton, the most surreal debate in amerqun history, i can promise you that. s)=9ì(lc% that's all we have today. be back next week. because if it's sunday, it's

♪ it's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of donald trump is not in charge of the law in our country. >> because you'd be in jail. >> secretary clinton - and that was just the taste of the hard tone of the second presidential debate. >> but it was donald trump who went on the offensive for his grossly made comments having accused bill clinton and sexual misconduct. breaking overnight. defensive efforts taken against two missiles in the gulf. plus, aftermath of hurricane matthew is caused heart pounding
