crime and cosmetics. a mother and daughter accused of stealing 100 grand in beauty products the scheme that police say they used to cash in. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. i'm like, well, i don't understand why you'd suspend him. >> an nbc10 exclusive. a mother says her second grader was suspended from school for making this knife out of paper. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. the 8-year-old says it was an art project and a misunderstanding. but the redding school district says that's not the entire story. nbc10's brandon hudson has the exclusive. >> reporter: the school that suspended the 8-year-old boy has a no weapons policy posted on its doors. while the 8-year-old didn't have an actual weapon, the principal thought his paper knife was dangerous enough to suspend him. this is a photo of the paper

knife that beth says got her 8-year-old son suspended from tyson shaner school in redding. >> it looks like a paintbrush. >> reporter: she says her son, ryan, made it in art class last week. she then got a phone call from the principal saying ryan was suspended for two days. it was later reduced to one. regardless, mom disagrees. >> he told me, well t was threatening. i was like it's paper. and he told me that it was my fault he acted up. >> reporter: in a statement, the redding school district said, quote, the information provided by mom is not accurate. a student is disciplined on the totality of the circumstances during the incident. she says the school told her the paper knife violated policy. did they tell you what the actual policy was? >> no. when i talked to the superintendent, she was supposed to look into it. >> i like went like this. >> reporter: we asked ryan about his paper knife. the second grader said he wasn't

punish billionaire carl icahn for shutting down the trump taj mahal casino in atlantic city. the law now prohibits icahn from holding a casino license for five years. his management team says the bill is unconstitutional and makes it virtually impossible to reopen the taj mahal should they decide to do so. if passed by the full legislature, the bill is likely to be vetoed by governor chris christie. it's a crash landing many are calling a miracle. today family members told nbc10 the pilot of this small plane intentionally steered away from homes and crashed into a backyard in lindenwold yesterday. it's too soon for investigators to know just what went wrong. they're also trying to determine if the pilot tried to use a nearby road as his runway. >> he was planning on landing on this road. but a car made a turn down here, and he noticed the car making a turn. so that's why he made a sharp turn to go to the right, and that's where he ended up. >> late today, the plane's body,

wings, and engine were all hauled away to a hangar in delaware where the faa will inspect the wreckage. a federal judge has overturned several guilty verdicts handed down against former congress man chaka fattah. but the conviction on the most serious bribery count this in his corruption trial stands. the judge ruled the prosecution did not present sufficient evidence to prove four of the 22 counts in the case, which included mail and bank fraud. a sentencing date has not been set. new at 11:00, airport troubles for a former philadelphia may oral candidate today. sam katz was caught by tsa officials with a small amount of marijuana as he tried to pass through security at philadelphia international. katz was at the airport getting ready to board a flight to florida. he was given a fine and allowed to leave. katz ended up missing his scheduled flight but eventually made it out of town. philadelphia marijuana activists threw a party and puffed in public tonight. the pop-up weed garden

repeating. how many times? until you get to $107,000 worth. crazy? not if you ask this makeup artist. >> this little container here is two ounces. so this is larger than what was taken. >> so easy to grab and stash? >> super easy. the box that this comes in is this big. >> she told me different brands are expensive. think hundreds of dollars. that's what this mom and daughter team allegedly stole over a year's time. police say caroline and breanna britt knew exactly which brands to steal at ulta stores during business hours across six states. nbc10 hit the streets of philly. >> that's absolutely insane. it's crazy that they did that on makeup of all things. >> i don't know how they would carry it all. like i don't know what would be so expensive. >> that's a lot. that's quite a bit, especially in a year. that's a lot. i would think that they're probably reselling it. that's not just all for them. >> reporter: but police say that's not what this mother/daughter pair was doing.

for your morning commute, we'll be seeing some areas of patchy fog throughout the entire area. so don't be surprised if you run into that. rain chances through tomorrow evening mainly into saturday morning. then it's going to get chilly and windy for part of the weekend. i think the main area of wind, what we're going to see mostly is going to be in the morning and afternoon on saturday. and later saturday night. here's a look right now. satellite and radar. we're seeing the clouds around, but the rain's not here just yet. it is off to our west, though. this all should really stay kind of off to our west until later tomorrow. i think the rain will hold off as we go through most of the day. morning fog and then later tomorrow, if you have the friday night plans, i would grab the umbrella before you head out because rain is going to be in the forecast later tomorrow night. so here's a look at future weather. if you look at the area overnight, not too bad. even for the morning. but if you're along the shore, you could start to see some morning showers by 9:30. then later in the day, mostly dry. i think temperatures are going to warm up again.

we matched another record high today. we could be in the upper 70s again tomorrow. rain just to our west by 7:00 p.m., and then we go through the overnight hours. that rain moves in, and i think it will be hanging around for saturday morning. starting to clear through the afternoon saturday. then the cool air starts to move in, we're talking upper 50s. but also going to get windy. sunday looks good. nice and dry. nice and sunny for the eagles game, and it will be more like football weather. so for tomorrow, friday, 77 for the high in philadelphia. showers mostly later in the day. along the shore, the showers could be there early in the morning. then we go into saturday morning rain lingering for pennsylvania, the philadelphia suburbs, also for the lehigh valley. then we go into sunday. sunny skies. temperatures in the low 60s, but it is going to get much colder as we go into your saturday. if you're heading to the eagles game, tailgaters, 53 degrees. more like fall weather. by kickoff, 58 degrees. by the fourth quarter, temperatures topping out in

highway. dash cam video shows the trooper driving toward the bird as it sat on the side of the road. the officer got out of his cruiser, picked up the animal, and put it in the back of his car. he then drove the eagle to animal control. the bird had no broken bones, and experts believe it will fly again. looking good. we'd love to see our own eagles flying again soon, danny. >> you got that right. the eagles were gashed in the run game against washington, but will get some relief in that area sunday against the vikings. i'll explain how that's possible coming up. plus the flyers honor their founder before tonight's home opener. we'll show you the tribute to ed snider. plus all the action on the ice next in sports.
