>> reporter: clinton's memo says it's michelle obama's message that will drive people to the polls. the jerry sandusky case, a jury awarded the football coach $7.3 million in damages. one of his claims was the university defamed him after he helped prosecutors testifying against assistant coach jerry sandusky in his 2012 child molestation trial. his lawyers argue his career was effectively damaged when the school publicly criticized them when he reported the abuse to then joe pa terno instead of going to the place t. university would not comment on the case until all counts are fully resolved. in north dakota, armed soldiers and police in riot gear continue to clash with protesters over the controversial oil pipeline.

nbc's miguel almaguer reports. >> reporter: this is a tense surface i face-off between an army ofplace police, native army protesters trying to shut down construction of a controversial oil pipeline on private land. officers in armored vehicles, wearing riot gear, are pouring in with air support. battle lines drawn, now making arrests. after setting fires and blocking the bridge in the path of the pipeline, months of tension have escalated. some promise a fight to the end. >> there's no career here. we know we have a moral high ground and we're doing what's right. >> reporter: the nearly complete dakota access pipeline will connect north dakota and illinois with some 1,200 miles of pipe. a $3.8 billion project, capable of transporting 570,000 barrels of oil a day w. nearly 300 arrests since august, the
