beginning with nbc national correspondent peter alexander. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you. no matter what to you, if anything new, fbi agents find on that laptop, the fbi director's announcement is certainly jolting this race. at this point it is still unclear whether there will be any legal impact here but the political consequences are already playing out with donald trump hyping the news and hillary clinton and her allies describing the director's movement forward as wrong and overblown. after obtaining a search warrant over the weekend, the fbi will begin poring through a reported 650,000 e-mails found on a laptop belonging to anthony weiner and his estranged wife, top clinton aide, huma abedin. the fbi searching for any e-mails possibly relating to the investigation into clinton's private server. with just days to go before the election, the fbi's stunning announcement is igniting a fierce partisan brawl. the senate's top democrat, harry reid, unloading on fbi director james comey in a scathing letter

>> america is triired of waitin. the moment is now. we're never going to have another chance. forget four years from now. it's not going to happen. >> reporter: that 21 million-plus -- million-plus, believe it or not -- early votes at this time is already a record turnout. it is likely that a third of the expected vote in those states has already been cast. >> peter, thank you very much. let's turn to pete williams who's been working his sources at justice. pete, good morning. >> good morning. fbi agents are beginning to sort through the newly discovered e-mails. it is a top priority now for the fbi. while it could take weeks, officials say there is some chance it could be over quickly. late sunday a federal judge gave the fbi approval to go through the thousands of e-mails written by clinton aide huma abedin that werehe wiener laptop narrowing those down to just

during the time hillary clinton was secretary of state and then they'll weed out any that weren't about government business, using software to search for duplicates they've already found during investigation of the clinton e-mail server and any that remain will be checked for classified information. officials say there is no way now to tell how long this will take but if it does go quickly, and in the event nothing classified is found, the fbi could say so within the next few days. it all depends how many e-mails are duplicates and how many are new to investigators. the fbi faces new questions this morning about the timeline for notifying director comey about the e-mails. some say agents first noticed the abedin e-mails earlier in the month. fbi agents government wean you're government to check for alleged sexting. it was only recently officials say the potential significance of those e-mails became clear. savannah? matt? >> pete williams with the latest from washington, thank you.

>> ari , i assume what fbi agens came to comey said we need to search this laptop. he thought that's going to get out, i might as well write this letter. on the other hand, the letter is so vague that it has the same effect, partial information that's out there that anybody can use to their advantage. >> right. on the election i think this headline clearly is not good for hillary clinton because it says clinton and fbi. but if you actually read these articles over the course of the weekend going into monday morning, it is not bad for hillary clinton because the letter, vague as you pointed out, didn't say they found anything yet. they just want to look. whether jim comey got too far out over his skis is a bag question in washington. >> it is vague but it is a little bit like hiding a piece of cheese in your desk drawer at work. whether you intend it to cause a commotion at not, sooner or later everybody is talking about it. >> everybody is talking about it. jim comey made choices. within hours other unauthorized

leaks did that it is anthony weiner and huma abedin. the ultimate question is did jim comey do more harm than good even if he did what he felt was prup prudent. >> you go the to love washington, right? the very people the democrats who are extolling the independence of jim comey when he said i'm not going to prosecute, are now saying, shame on him. and the republicans, trump, who was ripping the fbi for its lackluster investigation, now jim comey's a hero. >> right. it is why everyone says if you want a friend in washington, get a canine variety. it is the one that won't turn on you. a week ago the same poll that has hillary clinton only ahead by one point had her ahead by 12 points. they're both wrong. she was never ahead 12 points. she's probably not within a one-point race anymore. polls were probably always about four to six points. what this is going to test is the durability of her lead going into this scandal. >> i want to get you up to the

board in a second but let me ask you about donald trump. does he have to play this hand a little more carefully than he's already started to play it? >> what he has to do is something he has been incapable doing over the long haul for this entire campaign and that is be disciplined. he has been handed the dream message for the homestretch of the campaign. if he can stay on the attack and stay focused on this message and not take to twitter at 3:00 in the morning and pick a fight with somebody else, not get baited into a fight that's off topic and creates a brand-new distraction. seems like a simple thing for trump. that's been a very difficult thing to do. >> you have new polls in the battlegrounds but they were taken before this comey news. >> we can show you. you've got that poll we showed at the top that shows a one-point race. that was showing there may be new enthusiasm from republican voters. before all of this started here is what the road to 270 looked like. two new nbc polls coming out just yesterday. again, these do not take into account what we had the news on friday. you see hillary clinton here in

this week-long manhunt is finally over. this morning michael vance is dead after police received a tip from a property owner who discovered him camping out. just as police feared, vance did the no go down without a fight. >> reporter: overnight, the manhunt for michael vance coming to a dramatic end after the oklahoma fugitive opened fire on police, not once, but twice. >> about 8:30 this evening the sheriff of dewey county attempted to make a traffic stop on a white flatbed pickup. vehicle stopped. the driver exited the vehicle and started shooting. the sheriff was hit. >> reporter: authorities say the 38-year-old vance fled after that shoot-out and following a wild 25-minute car chase by highway practice toatrol office exchanged gunfire with police again. >> they report vance just north of here where there was a pretty fierce gun battle and ultimately vance was killed at the scene.

>> reporter: a wepolice officer the first on scene -- >> i was thinking about family. i didn't know if i was going to see them again. >> reporter: vance shot hampton inn his foot and hit another officer in the leg before police say he took off in a stolen truck and posted this taunting video live to facebook.>> i'm going [ bleep ] live. >> reporter: vance is accused are car vjacking a woman, murdering his under a and ur-- aunt and uncle and recently been accused of molesting a child. >> it is a relief for the public. this guy has been on a pretty bad crime spree for the last

several days. >> reporter: we are told that final shoot-out with police was fierce and lasted 20 to 30 minutes. the oklahoma sheriff who was injured last night is expected to be okay. matt? savannah? >> blake mccoy, thank you. italy's prime minister promising to rebuild after the most powerful earthquake to hit that country in more than three decades. the 6.6 magnitude quake struck about 100 miles northeast of rome on sunday toppling historic landmarks. aerial footage shows the widespread destruction. at least 20 people were injured. the region already struggling to recover from a series of quakes, including one in august that killed nearly 300 people. frightening scene in virginia last night. at least 22 people were hurt when a car plowed through fans. a driver was attempting to post another vehicle in post-race traffic when it struck the crowd of people. nine people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the car was taken into

almost a week stranded and alone. what they do know is that the couple who found her probably saved her life. >> we've got a female. >> reporter: frantic calls for help. >> i don't know how she got up here but she's elderly woman trapped in a truck. >> reporter: a terrified samaritan calling 911. moments after spotting a woman trapped inside a flipped hummer, dangling near a cliff. >> the truck is half-way rolled down a hill and it's only being held there by a couple of boulders. >> reporter: firefighters raced to the scene, quickly realizing that woman had been trapped there for almost a week. >> the vehicle's been here for five days. the vehicle doesn't appear to have moved. >> she was in serious condition and she needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible. >> reporter: according to police, 69-year-old barbara mcfarren was driving through the mountains of san bernardino on october 23rd when suddenly she used her car's navigation system to contact 911. >> we're trying to make access

now. >> reporter: after an air and ground search came up empty, she was reported missing. that is, until five days later when a woman and her boyfriend spotted the overturned vehicle with mcfarren pinned inside. >> i mean in truth, if nobody found her, who knows what would have happened. i can't really speculate, but in the area that she was in, who knows how long it would have taken to find her. >> reporter: she was airlifted to the hospital. her life intact, thanks to strangers who called for help and the first responders who pulled her to safety. mcfarren remains in the hospital this morning in serious condition. but her niece tells nbc news she will go to rehab when she leaves and that her aunt has an amazing will to live. >> i would say so. that's incredible. >> amazing that they found her. morgan, thank you very much. now, al has a check of the weather. >> all right, guys. we've got snow to talk about in parts of california. this is the sierra. troy, california.

with that new e-mail controversy rocking hillary clinton's campaign this morning, some are asking what it might mean for her longest serving aide, huma abedin. >> nbc's kristen welker has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: matt and savannah, good morning to you. hillary clinton will campaign here at kent state university today. huma abedin, always a fixture by her side, has been working out of their headquarters in brooklyn ever since news of that fbi probe broke. all casting a cloud over the clinton campaign in its final day days. it was a troubled relationship caught on camera. huma abedin and husband anthony weiner opening up their lives to documentary filmmakers after wiener launched a bid for mayor of new york city when a second sexting incident erupted mid filming. >> there have been multiple online experiences with multiple people? ky just say multiple people? or is it just this one? >> i think you've got -- there

was more than one. so i think we've got to answer the question. >> reporter: the high-profile scandal coming to light as wiener was trying to repair his image after a 2011 sexting controversy destroyed his congressional career and just as hillary clinton was ramping up efforts to launch a presidential campaign. abedin has worked for clinton for two decades, starting as an intern in the '90s for the then first lady. even opening up about the moment they met in a recent podcast. >> she shook my hand and our eyes connected and i just remember having this moment where i thought, wow, you just, this is amazing. and i just -- it just inspired me. >> reporter: always together on the campaign trail, clinton and abedin are practically family. clinton once calling abedin her second daughter. bill clinton even officiating abedin and wiener's wedding. but and debedin who kept a low profile over the weekend is now under fire after the fbi

announced they are looking into newly discovered e-mails. law enforcement sources telling nbc news the e-mails which could include duplicates of previously discovered exchanges came to light during the fbi's investigation of abedin's now-estranged husband and his latest sexting scandal on a computer the couple shared, and that is making abedin donald trump's latest target. >> i wonder, is she going to keep huma? huma's been a problem. do we agree? >> reporter: more troubling headlines overshadowed clinton's campaign this summer after wiener was caught allegedly sending racy texts to a teen. but now some democrats are asking if this latest crisis is a bridge too far with clinton's presidential bid at stake. sources close to clinton say the two women's relationship hasn't been strained and insisted abedin is still a valued member of the team. >> she's played a central and vital role in this campaign and she continues to do that. >> reporter: abedin herself acknowledging the bright spotlight can be harsh. >> politics, it can often be a

accusing comey possibly breaking federal law by telling congress so close to the election about new e-mails related to the inquiry into hillary clinton's private server. part of a complicated story that intertwines some of this year's most explosive political plot lines. here's the latest development. the fbi today has a warrant to go through e-mails found during a separate investigation into anthony weiner accused of sexting an underaged girl. the e-mails come from a family computer wiener shared with his estranged wife, huma abedin, one of clinton's closest aides. the clinton campaign sees comey's move as purely political. >> you believe this could cost you the election? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: now clinton is demanding comey share more. to show these new e-mails aren't bombshells, but duds, maybe even duplicates of what the fbi already knows. republicans want comey to give more details, too, for a different reason -- to confirm their suspicion clinton did something wrong. though right now, nobody really knows what the e-mails show and

may not until well after the election. that hasn't stopped donald trump from trying to capitalize. >> now the fbi has found -- you're not going to believe this one. this one just happened. another 650,000 e-mails. i think that's called the mother lode. >> reporter: to his campaign, it's an october surprise that's surprisingly helpful with the race getting tighter in battleground florida, starting to catch up to clinton nationally just eight days out. and new this morning, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation says abedin and her attorneys have told the fbi she didn't know these e-mails were on that computer. so will in pe any of this move needle with voters? a new poll taken entirely after the story broke that shows clinton with a three-point lead over trump, the same margin as before. so the bottom line -- this race

is tight, but not dramatically altered by this story. at least not yet. matt? >> hallie, thank you very much. week-long manhunt is over this morning for a double murder suspect in oklahoma. during the night officials say michael vance shot and wounded an officer and then fled and led police on a half-hour chase in western oklahoma. he was later killed in a shoot-out. vance had been wanted on multiple charges, including the murders of two relatives and the wounding of two police officers. a week ago he had streamed live video of his getaway on social media. a desperate rescue effort is under way to reach 33 miners trapped deep underground in southwestern china. a gas explosion ripped through the shaft where they were working. their condition is not known. at least two other miners have been rescued. many of china's mines are outdated and are among the deadliest in the world. and an unusual moment from the nfl yesterday. this one is getting a lot of attention on social media. it happened during the saints/seahawks game down in new
