sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising. an nbc10 exclusive. and a sign of the times. a postal worker accused of stealing a donald trump yard sign right out of the ground. sweating the septa strike. commuters stranded for a third day. how much longer this could last. election protection. new concerns about foreign enemies targeting voters as they head to the polls. the worst case scenario that has the government gearing up. >> announcer: nbc10 breaking news. that breaking news comes from olney where a house fire injured two young children, one of them critically. >> nbc10's drew smith just got to the scene. drew, what can you tell us? >> reporter: we're here on sheldon street, which is blocked off right now. i want to show you the home which was burning just after

10:00. you can see much of the fire fight was contained to the second floor there. when our cameras arrived, there was a dramatic rescue happening here. two young children taken out of that home had to be resuscita d resuscitated. we saw rescuers performing cpr, putting those kids on stretchers and getting them off to the hospital. information is limited right now because this investigation is in its early stages. but we do know that one of those children was as young as 18 months old, suffering from smoke inhalation. the other child we do not know that kid's age, but we do know that child is currently in extremely critical condition. we just saw a police chief inspector arrive on the scene. we're hoping to get a little bit more information. right now the cause still under investigation. i'm live in olney, drew smith, nbc10 news. to an nbc10 exclusive now. i postal worker accused of stealing a trump sign and stashing it in his mail truck. >> that sign belonged to a trump supporter who had enough of people stealing his signs so he

set up a hidden camera at his home in delaware. nbc10's drew smith has our exclusive report. >> reporter: townsend delaware man tells nbc10 his fourth stolen trump sign only lasted five hours on his street today. he did not want to appear on camera, but he did share these photos taken about 30 seconds apart. >> what the volunteer did was take a trail cam, attach it to a tree close by. >> reporter: it captures a postal truck passing by, then stopped the other way. a man then appears walking toward the sign. next his back is to the camera, his right arm inside the mail truck. the trump sign gone. >> that's just not the way things are done in delaware, so it's very disappointing. >> reporter: we checked with the special agent in the postal office who said, quote, the individual in the photographs was identified and will be dealt with appropriately by postal management after a thorough review of all the facts. a postal service spokesman went further staying in a statement,

this appears to be unacceptable behavior that does not reflect the efforts of the thousands of professional, zed cated employees in our workforce. at the delaware republican party office -- >> we're very clear with our folks. >> reporter: john shows us the strict rules for placing campaign signs. >> they go out with everybody who takes signs. >> reporter: sign theft and vandalism are unfortunately nothing new. seeing a government employee caught in the act is disturbing. >> these are yard signs and nothing more than that. and folks should be able to put these things up and kind of express their views on issues and candidates without having to go through this. >> reporter: drew smith, nbc10 news. now to the commuter nightmare that just won't end. the septa strike is now threatening to enter another day. >> riders have already spent three days now trying to find another way to get around, and they've had enough tonight. nbc10's brandon hudson live in center city, where septa and the union are negotiating tonight. brandon, what's the latest? >> reporter: jim and jacqueline,

it's been somewhat of a quiet night at the sheraton behind me as contract talks continue in an upstairs hotel room. now, when if comes to strikes, this has been one of the shorter strikes so far. but one passenger told me compared to the one in 2009 which went six days, this one feels much worse. in the middle of the evening rush hour mob at 30th street station, we met a man who was blindsided by all the confusion. >> i just came here and just found out that there's a strike. >> reporter: three days in, and alva sheldon told us he didn't know about the strike because he hasn't used septa. >> just say a prayer. we're going to need it. >> reporter: he wasn't the only one who needed hope and a prayer this evening. >> they're changing the signs now so i missed my train. >> reporter: although the work stoppage is in its third day, it feels longer to riders. >> really my first time experiencing like as badly as it is. >> hopefully they can solve it.

>> hopefully tonight. >> reporter: still it's only half as long as the strike in 2009 which ended after six days. that year, septa reimbursed riders for passes they paid for but couldn't use. no word yet on if that will happen after this strike. nbc10 checked out past train stoppages and found 2009 and 2016 pale in comparison to the three longest city transit strikes of 1977, '98, and '95. regardless, frustration continues to grow on the picket line and at the regional rail stations. >> i had to cancel family dinners and things, telling them i couldn't get home in time. >> reporter: one thing we did notice this evening is we haven't seen congressman bob brady or any other elected leaders in the hotel lobby. we're going to go in after this report, check out the lobby, see if there's any other developments. if there is anything, we will pass it along to you. reporting live in center city, brandon hudson, nbc10 news.

the government is gearing up for an unprecedented effort to protect the country on election day. that's what officials in the department of homeland security, the military, and the intelligence community are telling nbc news. officials say an attack on critical infrastructure is one of three worst case concerns. also on the worry list, part of the internet going down or a cyber attack to disable communications and transportation in swing states. intelligence officials note they have no specific warning about an election day attack. just five days from election day. both candidates are making their final pushes for the battle ground states including pennsylvania, and hillary clinton will spend her final night before the polls open right here in philadelphia. she and bill clinton, president obama, and first lady michelle obama are coming to town for a final rally in philly monday night. the time and location haven't been announced yet. ♪ ♪ you can feel it all over,

baby ♪ >> stevie wonder will try to inspire philadelphia to get out and vote with a concert for clinton tomorrow. the rock & roll hall of famer will perform at coda in rittenhouse square at 7:00 tomorrow night. donald trump is also getting some celebrity campaign help in montgomery county tomorrow. academy award winning actor jon voight will rally for trump at the white marsh valley country club in lafayette hills tomorrow evening. today melania trump pushed for pennsylvania. mrs. trump told more than 1,000 people in ber winchester county why they should vote for her husband. it was her first major speech since the republican national convention where she was accused of plagiarizing michelle obama. today mrs. truch vowed to fight cyber bullying if she becomes first lady. >> we have to find a better way to talk each other, to disagree with each other, to respect each other. >> donald trump was subdued today on twitter. he did tweet that he was watching his wife's speech from his private jet.

tonight both clinton and trump were pushing for last-minute votes in the battleground state of north carolina. >> the two hosted dueling rallies in that state this evening, clinton campaigning alongside bernie sanders in raly while donald trump pushed for the military vote in selma. >> raise your hand. oh, therey're so much more brav than me. i wouldn't have done what they did. i'm brave in other ways. i'm financially brave. big deal, right? these are real brave. >> trump also mentioned radical islamic terrorism saying his administration would destroy isis quickly. meantime tonight, clinton said that trump's campaign is literally making people sick. >> i know there are a lot of people who are upset about what's gone on in this campaign, aren't there? people come and talk to me. i've had people say that they can't sleep, that their stomachs are bothering them. they have headaches.

tonight a former eagle is in the headlines months after his death. >> initially doctors thought kevin turner died of als, also known as lou gehrig's disease, but today we learned he died of a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma. >> his death is leading for a call to change in a sport many kids play from a very young age.

nbc10's keith jones reports. >> reporter: it's a different kind of game. with every hit, with every risk. for former eagles fullback kevin turner, the danger extended far beyond the sidelines. he died in march at the age of 46. today his father looks back. >> i leove football as much as probably anybody. but i just want to say if it can be made safer. >> reporter: raymond turner was in boston as doctors unveiled new images of his son brain. they show the advanced stage of cte, a disease linked to repeated brain trauma as well as the onset of als, which is what doctored initially thought caused turner's death. >> i don't regret that he played, you know. well, in a sense. this happened to him, but he'd probably do it again. >> reporter: we consulted dr. douglas smith who showed us

black shots on a brain. the director of the center for brain injury and repair at the university of pennsylvania says this is what cte looks like and not much is known. >> how many times do you have to hit your head? how severe do you have to hit your head? do you have a genetic background that might pre-dispose you to these changes? and we don't know this. >> reporter: former teammate john runyon describes what is known. >> there's a lot of risks that you take on playing this game. >> reporter: runyon thinks of turner and changing the way coaches teach the game of football. >> let's go back to tackling like they do in rugby instead of launching yourself at people. you know, that's railey what it comes down to. >> reporter: keith jones, nbc10 news. a wilmington firefighter is recovering at home tonight after hundreds helped celebrate his release from the hospital today. fellow firefighters and emts welcomed brad speakman as he checked out of the hospital. he was badly hurt six weeks ago

fighting a house fire that killed two of his fellow firefighters and injured another. speakman says he wants to go back to work at the wilmington fire department, but for now, he's focused on family. >> i don't even know if i have the words. i just can't wait to get home and be able to spend time with my family, finally get to see my kids. >> firefighter arty hope was severely burned in the same fire. she is still getting treated at crozier tonight. a woman suffering from a serious heart attack was saved by a police officer in oklahoma. >> take a look at this. the roadside rescue all caught on camera. >> we got everybody out. >> she's not breathing. >> the woman's husband and daughter were rushing her to the hospital when their high speed caught the attention of an officer, who pulled them over. the officer hurried to the truck, helped the woman's husband pull her out, and then quickly began cpr. >> i want you to take a deep

breath, okay? >> hang in there, baby. >> the woman was taken to the hospital. she's expected to now make a full recovery. in this case, timing was vital here. when the family got pulled over, they still had a 20-minute drive to the hospital, and doctors say she probably would not have survived that long. timing and luck that that officer saw the speed and pulled them over. >> better than a police escort. emergency on the spot assistance. really good. let's turn it over to sheena parveen. >> we had the rain earlier today. now it's clearing the area. but if you're in parts of sussex county you could see some rain trying to move through. parts of southern delaware could see a few showers. otherwise we're dry. that rain is part of a cold front that has moved to the south so the cooler air is starting to filter in. as we go through tomorrow, you can see that with the seven day at the kbom of your screen. the commute cast tomorrow if the septa strike is affecting you and have you to walk or bike to

work, by 7:00 in the morning, nice and dry. cooler than it was this morning. 48 degrees by lunch time. 56 degrees and sunny. staying in the mid 50s by 5:00 p.m. some areas in the upper 50s, so a cooler day tomorrow. much cooler through the afternoon and even through the weekend. so here are your neighborhood high temperatures. no matter where you are, tacony, 60 degrees for a high. reading, 57 degrees and sunny tomorrow. robbinsville, 58 degrees. long port, 60. dover, 60 degrees. quite a bit cooler because some areas in delaware today got into the 80s, believe it or not, and even a couple places close to the shore hit a record high. for saturday morning, we're going to see 30 degree temperatures. here's what saturday, 8:00 a.m. looks like. but it's when you factor in a bit of a breeze we'll be feeling right around freezing to start off the weekend. as we go into next week for election day, that looks good. we're going to be in a pretty dry stretch. now, no matter where you are, morning temperatures around 7:00 a.m. should mostly be in the 40s. by lunch time, right around 60

degrees. and by 8:00 p.m. when the polls close f you're standing in line, it will be dry and in the 60s. so it's not going to be a bad day at all to get out there and vote. over the weekend, around 60 degrees for most of the area saturday, even sunday night. nice and dry across the weekend. but much cooler. it's definitely going to feel like fall over your weekend. we're going to stay that way as we go through much of next week. nice, dry stretch of weather. mainly the 60s as we go into next week. the warmest day so far does look like election day. then we go into next weekend. that's when we're going to throw some rain back into the forecast. but for now i think you're going to need the jacket as opposed to today. hold on to it as we go across the weekend. stay tuned. we'll be right back.
