and the washington h"washington clinton's lead at just five points. a university of new hampshire survey center poll has clinton up by 11 points in that state, while in ohio, new columbus dispatch poll shows trump with a one-point advantage. we've got some new numbers on the all-important early voting. according to data provided to us by target smart, more than 42 million people have already cast their ballots, including record turnout in the battlegrounds of florida, north carolina and nevada. in a moment, we're going to be talking to the campaign managers from both sides. but let's begin our decision 2016 coverage on the eve of the election with nbc's anticipated ya mitchell. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the 2016 campaign now again turned upside down by fbi director james comey. this time deciding that those hillary clinton e-mails on anthony weiner's laptop were either all duplicates or not related to government business.

campaign. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in sarasota, florida for us this morning. hi, peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've been traveling with donald trump for the final hours of this campaign. he ended his weekend here in sarasota at 3:30 this morning. he'll take the stage a short time from now. this is the 510th and final day of his campaign. as for the fbi's investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails, donald trump insists it was wrapped up prematurely. he says it is just more evidence that the system is rigged. >> reporter: donald trump racing to the finish line, wrapping up early this morning in virginia, his fifth state of the day. >> we'll call this the midnight special speech. >> reporter: trump's casting doubt on the fbi's concluding its investigation of hillary clinton's e-mails. >> you can't review 650,000 e-mails in eight days. you can't do it, folks. >> reporter: urging voters to provide the final verdict tuesday. >> hillary clinton is guilty. she knows it.

the fbi knows it. the people know it. and now it's up to the american people to deliver justice at the ballot box on november 8th. >> reporter: trump's aides insist the november surprise will have no impact on his campaign. a senior trump aide telling nbc news the latest e-mail controversy has already significantly damaged clinton's campaign and motivated once reluctant suburban republicans to back trump. capping a whirlwind weekend, trump is pushing hard in seven separate battlegrounds, even targeting deep blue states like minnesota and michigan that haven't gone republican in decades. team trump is particularly confident about michigan. the latest poll giving clinton a four-point lead. but aides insist it is a dead heat. trump didn't looking back, even after a chaotic scene in reno, nevada saturday. rushed offstage by secret service. the spark, a scuffle in the front rows, someone yelling "guns." the crowd turned on a protester. the secret service determined there was no gun and trump

returned to the podium. again, this morning donald trump's aides are projecting confidence about that state of michigan circling it on the map. it is where he will end his day today. he starts it here in sarasota, florida, goes to raleigh, north carolina, then scranton, pennsylvania. finally, manchester, new hampshire, before flying out to grand rapids, michigan. matt and savannah? back to you. >> peter alexander, thank you. robby mook is hillary clinton's campaign manager now with us from her campaign headquarters in brooklyn. >> good morning. >> about ten or so days ago when director comey released that first letter to congress saying that there were some new e-mails the fbi wanted to look into on anthony weiner's laptop and they may be pertinent to the investigation, secretary clinton had a lot to say about it. among the things she said, she thought the director's actions were unprecedented and deeply troubling. now yesterday comey comes out with another letter saying, never mind, nothing to see here, no change from july, and silence

from secretary clinton on the subject. why? >> well, what she also said in her statement previously was that they weren't going to find anything new here. that's what director comey said. we're in the final stretches of this election. secretary clinton wants to be out there explaining her vision for where she wants to take this country. she wants to celebrate and lift up the historic voter turnout we're seeing across the country. >> but after such strong words for director comey ten days ago, is the idea now that any mention of the word "e-mail" at a campaign rally or in the headlines is simply a taboo? >> i just think americans have heard a lot about this. the director resolved this yesterday. that's what we asked him to do, to get the information out there. and bring it to a close. and so we're going to move on and we want to talk about the voters and their lives. that's what this election should be about. >> a bit of a footnote and really a sign of the times when it comes to this election season, robby. the campaign director for hillary clinton yesterday tweeted, "friends, please

remember if you see a whopper of a wikileaks in the next two days, it's probably a fake." does that mean you guys are sitting there holding your breath over the next 24 hours worried about some other drop of information? >> you know, we're not. we're really focused on turning out our supporters. just this weekend we made 8.1 million phone calls. we knocked on 7.2 million doors. that ground game we worked so hard to build is in full action right now. and we're seeing historic turnout. latino and asian-american turnout has doubled in north carolina and florida. and one-third -- one-third of the asian-american and latino voters that are turning out in florida didn't vote in 2014 and 2012. that doesn't happen by accident. it is the work that our team did to register hundreds of thousands of voters and now all the work that our volunteers are doing to remind people to go vote. >> and yet, robby, we see secretary clinton in michigan today. the president went there.

you are sending top surrogates to colorado. these are blue states. does that signal jitters on the campaign's part, perhaps the deep blue wall is not as strong as you thought? >> well, we're particularly focused these last few days on states that vote predominantly on election day. we were very focused on north carolina, florida, nevada who have early voting. now new hampshire, michigan, pennsylvania, even ohio, states where much more than half of the vote will be coming in tomorrow. >> just real quickly, are you prepared for either outcome tomorrow? >> you know, we're prepared for everything. but for the next 24, 48 hours, we are really focused on turning our supporters out to vote. i'm proud to announce secretary clinton will be airing an ad this reasoning, a two-minute ad with secretary clan making her closing argument to the voters. >>. clinton campaign manager robby mook, thank you. >> thank you. now let's get the mood of

the trump campaign. kel kellyanne conway is trump's campaign manager. >> good morning. >> donald trump made the most of the comey letter in late october when it came out stating there would be new e-mails particularly pertinent to the investigation that he was going to look at. he said that they were classified. i think a quote was he said those have to be beyond classified. he said she was guilty. he said there was an indictment coming. can we expect him now in light of what comey has now said to say i'd like to correct the record? >> they are very troubling open questions, as we now. >> that's true. but his assertions have proven to be false. >> well, many people made those assertions because they kept saying, right, left and center, why in the world would you re-open or extend this investigation if you didn't have something big. even the democrats were saying that. what donald trump did not do which hillary clinton and others on the democratic side did do was viciously attack jim comey who just thought he was doing his job. first he's a hero in july, now he's the enemy -- >> whoa, let me stop you there for a second. what he said in the first place ten days ago, he said director

comey had guts, he did the right thing and he had confidence in the fbi. now after yesterday's letter, the fbi rolled over, they let clinton off, they should be ashamed of themselves. >> why re-open an investigation if there's no there there. that's something that both sides were asking. and frankly, the investigation has been a hot mess from the beginning. he said i won't prosecute her. then went on to list the whole litany of illegalities -- >> but he didn't attack comey ten days ago. he saved that for yesterday. >> what he's always talking about is the very corrupt system, the same corrupt system that's shipped our jobs and welfare overseas. it is one that's given us very bad trade deals. it is one that allows people to pour over the borders and take our jobs. >> i would say, both campaigns do this. when they like what comey does, he is a man of great integrity. when they don't like the result, he should be ashamed of himself. would you acknowledge that neither campaign exactly has clean hands when it comes to this? >> i was very surprised that

last week, savannah, even the president of the united states ended up saying jim comey should not be "interfering in the election." that's a pretty serious charge. if jim comey and the fbi were under pressure to re-open the investigation based on new evidence they thought they had, then that's why he acted that way. but -- >> trump said the fbi has credibility. >> but to the voters today and tomorrow what they see is somebody who represents change and taking things in a new direction. they see somebody who is an illustration of the corrupt system they don't like in washington. >> every expert says tomorrow for donald trump to have any chance of winning you must flip one of those traditionally blue states. >> and we will. >> if you look at the travel plans of secretary clinton, it seems like they think it might be michigan. will you win michigan? >> we will win michigan. and the great resonant arguments that donald trump is making to the voters in, say, pennsylvania and ohio, bro teprotecting the workers and coal miners that hillary clinton talked about putting out of work. unleashing energy investment. big resonant message

particularly in pennsylvania. we feel really good about the closing polls in the upper midwest states in the last couple days -- last couple weeks that have been elusive to republican presidential candidates which keep on electing republicans state wide to be their chief executives and united states senators. we also look at the rocky mountain states, colorado, maybe dipping into nevada and new mexico. >> the race has tightened and a lot of people are saying donald trump has been the most disciplined candidate possible in the last ten days. "the new york times" reports that his campaign staff actually rested his twitter account from him basically saying you're not going to tweet for yourself anymore. is that true? >> no, that's not true. i think donald trump is at his very best when he is talking about the issues. one of the great arguments he's making to the american people in the last couple weeks, if you don't like obamacare premiums rising in a state like arizona, 1 16%, over 50% in the key state of pennsylvania, then i have a better plan. i think the combination of the

obamacare argument and hillary clinton deciding to go super low in her closing arguments, i'm actually personally astonished that she would make everything about personal obstruction, negative insults. >> it is a little late for either campaign to claim the high ground. >> he's out there projecting his vision. >> one more day. >> thanks for having me. yes. >> appreciate it. steve kornacki over at the board. he's got more on the 270 electoral votes that are needed. how is it looking it this morning with 24 hours to go? >> this campaign is ending in sort of an unlikely place. the rustbelt. i don't think at the start of the campaign we thought that's where both candidates would be finishing. why are they finishing there? you can see the state of play and you can see the hole donald trump's in. these grey states are what we've thought of as the toss-up

states, with the battleground states. you lose one of these, she's over 270. the trump campaign has some particularly discouraging news out of nevada. if clinton just wins that with the tradition aal battleground, she's over 270. you have a flip a state from blue to red if you're trump. you look to states that figure your demographic profile, rural populations, working class populations, probably not a large latino population given the indications we are seeing about latino turnout. where's trump been? he was in minnesota. he's in michigan today. pennsylvania. wants to finish in these three states. what do they see when they look in those states? they see like the upper peninsula, the rural parts of northern michigan. mccomb county outside drought. they see like the iron range in minnesota. they see the rural sort of interior pennsylvania. those are the opportunities they see. make no mistake about it, this is a long shot move by the trump campaign. there's been grey states disappear. they need to make something else happen. >> good point. who paid attention in school when we learned the

abbreviations of states? steve kornacki. >> next he'll wow us with the state capitals. >> and zip codes. >> chuck and nicolle are here as well. >> i'm surrounded by geeks. >> what's the final word? he gives the letter at the end of october. now the sort of clean bill of health as of yesterday. going back to his original decision not to prosecute. where does this land in terms of the effects? >> the effect is immeasurable because it was two-fold. it was one on the polls. it really halted her growth. the focus had been on her prosecuting the case against donald trump. that shifted the focus. it also changed donald trump as a candidate. the very same article that you were asking kellyanne about has some really rich details for political junkies out there. it is in the "new york times." it is an article that anyone who cares about what goes on behind the scenes should read because it talks about how donald trump's psyche changed. it was described as a moment

that made him think he could win this thing. the impact is immeasurable because it changed the race we saw, of course tightening the polls, and it also changed the candidate by getting him on message. >> do we have any more on how the e-mails affected her campaign that we got crickets after yesterday. >> because there is no good news e-mail headline. it is just sort of, okay, it is not damaging. i think at the end of the day we're going to look back and say this may have cost the democratic party one or two senate seats. what this also did down the ballot to galvanize republicans to basically vote like republicans again. you cannot -- we may look at the makeup of the senate and say, a comey effect. >> i'm old enough to remember when early voting didn't exist. it was absentee balloting and you had to have an excuse. early voting is huge now. i think we said like 40 million people have already voted. are there any take leaves or breadcrumbs to read in what we've seen from the early vote? had. >> part of it is that road map

we just showed you. some of the indications about turnout among latino voters, energy among latino voters. if we end up seeing that in a state like florida or nevada, that could be very, very bad news for donald trump. again, that could be part of why the donald trump campaign is looking at some of those other states. >> let pea jume just end on tur and energy. on friday we said 8 in 10 people have been left repulsed and disgusted. are these people motivated to vote? >> this is one of the sad and weird things about campaign. you heard kellyanne heard how they end on negative campaigns? that's what motivates them. voters are motivated by things they fear. there has also been a lot of talk about a hidden trump vote. think anecdotally there may be a lot of hillary vote, a lot of women voting differently from their spouses, a lot of women quietly pulling the lever despite of her baggage. i think there will be a lot of lessons on wednesday morning. >> thank you. we'll have a lot more throughout the morning and nbc news has you

7:30, monday morning, november 7th, 2016. it is a clear, crisp midtown morning here in manhattan. they'll have a treat in a little while. the rockettes. meanwhile, inside studio 1a, let's take a look at some headlines. we begin with sat news overnight. janet reno, the first woman to serve as u.s. attorney general, has died. the 78-year-old was battling parkinson's disease and spent her final days at home in miami surrounded by her family and friends. police in south carolina have discovered a second body on the property where a missing woman was found alive chained inside a storage container last

week. remains found on friday, meanwhile, have been identified as that woman's boyfriend. investigators now say the 45-year-old suspect has also confessed to killing four people in an unsolved 2003 shooting. fbi director james comey says his agency found no evidence to warrant criminal charges against hillary clinton over those e-mails on anthony weiner's laptop. donald trump, quick to weigh in. >> hillary clinton is guilty. she knows it. the fbi knows it. the people know it. and now it's up to the american people to deliver justice at the ballot box on november 8th. >> for her part, clinton did not mention the fbi's decision during a campaign stop in new hampshire. of course, the presidency is not the only thing people will be voting on tomorrow. legalizing marijuana for recreational use is on the ballot in five states, including california. nbc's gadi schwartz has more on that.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. it is crazy to think that in 1912, california was actually the first state to ban marijuana. now many experts are saying if california legalizes, it could turn the tide for the rest of the country. at venice beach in california, a doctor will prescribe you a medical marijuana card for $40. but people on the boardwalk will tell you, pot is so easy to get, some don't even bother with the prescription. >> you can just come here, feels like amsterdam or something like that. >> reporter: on the ballot in california, arizona, nevada, massachusetts and maine, whether to legalize. for most states, that means six plants for personal use and allows people over 21 to people up to an ounce. >> so this is what an ounce looks like. >> this is an ounce. 28 grams. >> reporter: while in maine, voters will be asked to legalize up to 2 1/2 ounces. nationwide, polls are showing support for pot is at an all-time high. this election cycle, 57% of americans are in favor of

legalization. in colorado, the first state to legalize recreational use, the govern once opposed to legalization is now optimistic. >> i step back now and look at it and say, you know, it just might work. >> reporter: but in the colorado town of pueblo, voters are being asked if they want to repeal legalization. district attorney from denver has written a letter to california saying they've seen an increase in crime, marijuana related traffic deaths and calls to poison control. and in california, those opposed to legalization are taking to the airwaves with ads warning about the dangers to kids. >> children could be exposed to ads promote pentagon marijuana gummy candy and brownies. the same products blamed for a spike in emergency room visits in colorado. >> reporter: if the measure passes in california, the marijuana market could be bigger than the economies of some small countries. experts estimate it could bring in over $1 billion in tax revenue alone. >> if california votes yes, it's legitimately the beginning of

are angry either way. >> the united states just seems like there's so much animosity right now. no one wants to just -- cornny as it sounds -- just get along. >> is election stress like the one thing right now that's actually bringing everybody together? >> you know, that's a great question. i think in a lot of ways it is, yeah. >> reporter: regardless of whether they lean red or blue, recent surveys show more than half of americans are disgusted with this campaign and call the election a significant source of stress in their lives. it's not just the frayed nerves, but the fatigue. we really are losing sleep. getting less of it after big moments like debates where the rhetoric's ratcheted up more than ever, it seems. >> is to replenish -- >> such a nasty woman. >> i am sick and tired of the negative, dark, divisive, dangerous vision and behavior of people who support donald trump. >> these have been very antagonistic campaigns filled

with a lot of angry, negative rhetoric. we also think that social media is playing a role in people's amount of election related stress. >> i think especially seeing it on facebook with the insane statuses, all of the instagrams. everyone's pretty sick of it. >> i have blocked a lot of people. a lot of people that i thought were friends. i just had to hide them on facebook. >> reporter: facebook says they've had 5.3 billion likes, posts, comments, and shares related to 2016 in the first nine months of this year alone. not easy to escape an election that's everywhere. >> i actually stopped watching most of the news about it months ago. >> because you were getting to stressed? >> yeah. it was too bothersome. all the sound bites and the quotes. and i had basically made up my mind. >> reporter: the good news -- this 2016 slog's soon to be history. >> hopefully it's a reaction of relief. i'm hoping. but i guess it is really going to depend on who gets it. >> reporter: still, a word of

prescient in the same ways as it is like kind of timeless. but then the actual endeavor of playing a part so -- captured so beautifully and so iconically by an absolute iconic hero of my personally was one that i had to be very thoughtful with. >> you said so relevant. so needed right now. this is unequivocally an inspirational story. after what we've just lived through for the last year, year-and-a-half, this really is going to go well with audiences. >> i hope so. it's been really fun. i think we've done ten shows now. yeah, it still hits people. i had friends of mine who had never seen the film. be just like this is a story. everybody that read it got teary eyed by the end of the play. >> just to make sure -- maybe there are some people who don't know the story, it is a story of a group of teenage boys at a prestigest prep school and one of their teachers is a guy named john keating who inspires them. tell me about him. >> basically john keating is a

rabble-rouser. he is an alum of the school. he was a rhodes scholar. he went to oxford. he has a very different way of teaching, encouraging kids to think for themselves and outside of the box, not just the path the school has for them. >> i've seen the movie probably 20 times. every time i listen to some of the speeches that keating gives in that movie, i think back to people in my life. who was the john keating character in my life. did you have one? >> i had a couple. very lucky that way. i think that's one of the biggest things that i've benefited from, is the accidental or actual mentoring that i received. but, yeah, i had a great high schoolteacher named sally shipley. i had amazing directors and teachers in my chicago second city experience. tina fey over -- just across the street here was a big mentor for me in my early days of writing at "snl." lorn certainly. it is someone that sees something in someone before they

see it themselves. tarn parents can be that way but it doesn't need to be familial. it could be in your cul-de-sac or the guys that played led zeppelin or the beasty boys. you're like what is it? as long as you can keep encouraging people to sort of look beyond what they are -- their own baggage can sort of get in the way of them seeing, it is a nice gesture to offer. >> being on stage every night is going to take you away from bath time for a while. >> that's true. >> is that a good thing or a bad thing? >> i shower now. >> i don't mean you. >> oh! sorry. okay. >> talking about the baby. >> it's all right. it's all right. again, i think i've got six little boys to watch over when i'm away from him now in my class. yeah. he'll have to deal with it. >> any sense of just wishing you were at "snl" this year with this kind of -- with the riches they are devouring every week in this political season? >> no. it's been fun to watch though. they've been doing an amazing job. if it came down that they needed

with the holidays fastly approaching, you are probably looking for a way to up your game when it comes to your holiday table decor. good morning. congrats on the book. i think people like they sometimes get into the flower rut like you've got to do flowers and you have some different ideas. >> absolutely. oftentimes you can just gather things already in the house, you can get creative with it and you can actually put things on the table that can be good conversation starters. >> i love this first idea. you are using framed photos as the centerpiece. how would you do this if you were having guests? >> what i love is the idea that you would put something in the center that people really like want to talk about. oftentimes during this time of year we're gathering people who haven't seen each other so i think it is a great idea to ask your guests ahead of time, submit your favorite image from the year. submit an image from your favorite vacation, a wedding, something special. then use the frames around your house to put down the middle of the table. it is a great conversation starter and it gives everybody something to say. >> you can use it as place

cards, too. you don't have to use expensive frames. you can get the cheap ones or what you got around the house. is there absolutely. it is a great way to refreshen your frames. this time of year people forget because everything is digital to freshen up your frames. so it is a good reminder to do that. >> another super cute idea, books. not just any books. you get recommendations from your guests. >> again, ask your guests ahead of time, what's your favorite read of the year? shift the topic away from politics to this and put some books down the middle of the table to again generate some great conversation, give everybody a reason to participate. what's really nice about this is if you want to go the extra distance, it is a great parting gift. people can take home a book that they didn't contribute. >> that's great. so a party favor. then i see these movie signs for the placards. what's the idea there? had. >> so instead of a typical place cardholder, ask everybody ahead of time, what's your favorite tv show of the year? what's your favorite movie of the year?

and then use those as the place card holders. it gives people a chance to kind of walk around the table beforehand, sort of figure out, a, where they're sitting, but, b, what everybody else contributed. again, it gives people a reason to generate a conversation. >> i love that that's really getting a unique conversation going. dessert as centerpiece, a beautiful idea whose time has time. >> this is from my favorite bakery, sweet henrietta's. but you can use whatever bakery you want. desserts are so often relegated to the end. they're tucked away in the kitchen. if you have a beautiful cake or beautiful pie, why not let that be the centerpiece? you don't have to go the extra distance of spending money on cut flowers. use your bread as a place cardholder. again, give people the thought that if i like what i'm seeing, i will save a little extra room during the meal. >> that's always a good reminder to me, save room for the

we areback now, 8:45. week two of our special series "today food all-star thanksgiving." this month we're pairing chefs to help make your holiday seamless and delicious. lidia bastianich is serving a special thanksgiving menu and andrew caramelini of lucca, also here in new york. guys, thanks for being here for thanksgiving. we're making a vegetable we've all gone 180 degrees on. brussel sprouts. >> you have to caramelize it.

you're going to roast them. i'm going to saute them in a pan until it gets nice and caramelized. >> i read through these recipes, i love them both. they're very different. just starting off by having them. is that the best way to do it? >> the leaves like this. i like to use leaves as well. just open it up. you know that intense flavor that you feel, that sulfur flavor, you kind of release it if tu let it out. >> these get all crispy, too. >> the leaves. >> yeah. it is like little chips. >> you don't want to waste anything. food. so here are the ingredients. you saw how we cleaned the brussels sprouts. olive oil, bacon. you saute the bacon. you just take the bacon off. and you drain it off. and you put it -- >> leave all that good stuff in the pan. >> exactly. you add the onions to that just like that. garlic. you make kind of a hotspot here, get the garlic to caramelize

very nice. a little bit of. he pepperoncini. a little bit of vinegar. you let it steam. you let it sweat. about 15 minutes. 15, 20 minutes. nice and easy. you want to caramelize it just like that. this is how you want it. this is where the flavor is. you know that green -- bright green vegetables. yeah, they are nice to look and everything, but these taste delicious. >> look how you garnished your dish over there. >> but a little bit of -- >> walnuts. >> just crunchiness and a little bit of flavor. >> come on back and join us. thank you. andrew, what's different about your recipe? >> i'm italian but thinking about thanksgiving and i love apples, i love celery. i'm doing like a sweet and sour apple brussel sprout thing. >> i wish people could smell what i'm standing over here.

>> i like to put them in the oven. so i just salt and pepper, olive oil, put it in the oven, get it nice and crispy. take apple cider. reduce by three-quarter, and add a little apple cider vinegar. >> why? just to offset the sweetness? >> yeah. a kind ever sweet and sour apple glaze. very, very american. put some black pepper in there. you have this kind of glaze. it is great because the brussels sprouts are a little bit better and you have this sweetness to it. >> we've got people downstairs trying both these recipes. >> really, really good. >> delicious. >> this is a great thanksgiving thing just put that glaze over the brussels sprouts. toss them around to get them all glazed. the bottom of the celery plant, if you can't find this, you can use fennel. fennel works really well. kind of an intense celery flavor. really good for you.

it's beautiful. i was with a friend. we were -- it is that kind of movie afterwards you keep talking about. and you're filling in the holes. it stays with you. trust me. go see it. i'm going to be sitting down with the cast for an interview coming up soon. but it is stunning. it is a stunning work of art. >> wow. >> what did you do? >> didn't do much. i had a very emotional week with the world series. you know. and this weekend -- >> you were there! >> i was there. you know what? it was so exciting to be part of history, to watch this. to say i was there. i can't remember in my lifetime ever seeing anything like this. >> i had to be up really early the next morning and i was up until 1:00 a.m. new york time watching the game. i was like, this is the best game i've ever seen. you couldn't turn away. just to feel the passion of two teams wanting it really so bad. playing their hearts out. >> and great history for both teams. whoever won, it was going to be a great story. >> and that's all i know. >> i was just looking to

decompress. there is a great little place up near where we live called six depot. it is an old train station. they turned it into a coffee shop. my son and i just had a nice little breakfast yesterday morning, hanging out. he had waffle with nutella and fruit. >> nicky's eating like a champ! >> please. he finished that, then half of mine. >> i can't keep up with this. >> i can't. i can't. >> i can't keep feeding you. >> he had a side of bacon besides. he ate my bacon. but it was just nice. it was quiet. it was kind of cool. it was very fall like. just a nice chilled -- >> i got a text from a friend who was there and said, al roker is sitting right here. i wanted to say, well, go say hi. we're at that point in our lives where people connect us even on our weekends and time off. i see the text. oh, al roker is here. >> next time come over, say hi.

did you see "snl" saturday night? >> i sure did. >> what are your thoughts on -- >> my weekend actually included a little reunion with my friend, alec baldwin. i made a little guest appearance on his game show called "match game." >> which is a terrific show. >> then that evening he went on to do his appearance on "snl." i didn't know what it was going to be but i knew they were doing something special. it was so awesome. i felt slightly touched by it. >> a lot of people had that reaction. >> okay. really? i wasn't like that bizarre? >> you can still be both. we're friends. i can do that. >> there is this sort of over election stress -- stressful situation right now so i thought it was -- i was oddly moved by it that they broke the fourth wall and spoke as themselves and said let's just all pull together as america. >> what sta like as an actor to do that? have you ever done that, broke that wall to give a message? >> i'm sure i have. i mean i want to say i have no idea. i have no idea what it is like to be an actor.

you'll have to call my friend, alec, and ask him what that's like. >> but they were so terrific. obviously alec baldwin as donald trump, kate mckinnon as hillary clinton. and they find -- they've just done such a tour de force between these two characters. but take a look at what happens when they finally broke character. >> i'm sorry, kate. i just hate yelling all this stuff at you like this. >> yeah. i know. right? this whole election has been so mean. >> i mean i just feel gross all the time. don't you guys feel gross all the time about this? >> woo! >> you know what i think can help us? let's get out of here. >> what? where will we go? >> you'll see. ♪ >> and then they make a break for it. they get to times square. by the way, in record time.

so we all gained an extra hour of sleep yesterday. we should all feel rested and refreshed. >> we should, but here to tell us about that and more, nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie aczar. nice to see you. let's just jump right into this sleep that that extra hour was beneficial to us. >> honestly, i have to tell you that i thought i benefited from it yesterday. i did feel like i got an extra hour of sleep. the research would maybe suggest otherwise. specifically that for the week after we switch our clocks either fall back or spring forward, that your sleep is really disrupted for the next week, meaning that you have trouble falling asleep at night, there's middle of the night waking. you're getting up earlier and that the people who have the most difficulty with this are the larks. those are the early risers. and also people who sleep generally less than seven and a half hours tend to feel the disruption more than other people. >> so how do you get back on track? >> the know what? the same kind of advice that we give moms, new parents of newborns.

it is get them on a schedule, get back on a schedule, take an afternoon nap. this is the one place where we do maybe advise an afternoon nap could help. also get regular exercise. basically just re-establishing your schedule. i will point out that some studies previously have shown a little up tick of cardiac events or heart attacks in the spring, especially. that has to do more with sleep deprivation. not to alarm anybody, but again, the message here is -- >> too late. >> -- is your sleep important? yes. again, lots of research has been done on this whole daylight saving business and we're not going to go there. but it is not cut and dry. >> what about the research thino the calories you consume and sleep. >> there's been a correlation with lack of sleep with lack of hormones which can affect how much you eat. this looked at 11 studies, almost 200 individuals or participants. it showed people who experience partial sleep deprivation --

that's 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours of sleep. that's a significant amount. ate up to or consumed up to 385 calories more than people who didn't. >> a day? >> a day. in a 24-hour period. that equated to about 4 1/2 slices of bread a day. leaving the researchers to conclude that sleep deprivation could actually affect your risk for obesity simply by the intake of more calories. i thought that was super interesting. and people ate more fat and less protein, carbohydrates stayed the same. so rule, sleep your eight hours. >> worried well. >> this is interesting. this has to do with, we know cardiovascular risk can be influenced by people's health behaviors -- diet, tobacco, smoking. this specifically looked at if you have health anxiety -- that hypochondriac worried about constantly getting sick, et cetera, could increase your risk for having ischemic heart disease. we know anxiety in general can be a risk factor for heart disease and specifically something called health anxiety.

right now some 50,000 runners are recovering after taking part in the 40th annual new york city marathon yesterday. one of those amazing athletes, had an unthinkable loss. >> and al was the one who inspired her to lose 130 pounds. tina is here today for what she thinks is a tour of the studios. >> she doesn't know we have a surprise for her, but first we want you to hear tina's surprising story. >> been overweight my entire life. dreamt of being an athlete my entire life and i'm finally going to live my dream and run the new york city marathon. 26 years ago, we lost my dad from chronic obesity. i was on the exact same path and

i knew it was time for a change. i was inspired after al roker had his gastric bypass to go and visit the surgeon. i decided to have the vertical sleeve surgery. i was up two days after walking around the neighborhood. i had to just start moving. i had always dreamed of being a runner. so i started training for my first 5k. after i ran my first 5k, i knew i was hooked and i was going to do a 10k. i did several 10ks. set my sights on a half marathon. then suddenly had run nine half marathons. i lost 130 pounds in 11 months. i was at my goal weight. i had blogged about my journey since the very beginning and i put a post up in 2010 about how al roker ran the new york marathon and i remember seeing a clip on him training on the treadmill at 2:00 in the morning and his job starts at 4:00 in the morning and my job didn't. i didn't feel like i had any

excuses at that point. i read my blog again and it had said i was going to make him proud one day and run the new york city marathon. so i decided that's exactly what i was going to do. three months ago, about half-way through training for new york, i lost my husband to a massive heart attack on his bike, on his way to work. completely unexpected. and i didn't know how i was going to go on but i really knew that he would have wanted me to just keep running. and that meant getting out of bed, setting my alarm at 4:45 and doing my long runs and showing up as hard as it was. running has really saved my life and i had no idea what it was going to prepare me for. training for a marathon taught me that even when you think you can't go on, you do. when i became a volunteer coach for the atlanta track club, they really have inspired me, especially through these difficult times this community has been there for me. they're coming to new york with

me. my coach, amy, is a former olympian and has been by my side from 5k to marathon. >> tina is one of those amazing positive people that comes and does things not just for herself. she's someone that puts everybody in front of herself and now we're going to put her front and center and make her cross this finish line that she's been dreaming about for a very long time. >> we're also raising money for kilometer kids which is our organization for teenagers teaching them basically how to make great decisions and live healthy lifestyles. i think about where i was and i think about ar i am now. and i'm really proud of myself because i never gave up. every excuse in the book i could have used and i had a couple of really good ones. i'm going to run are the new york marathon for my husband. i'm going to keep that promise to al roker and i'm going to do this for myself, most of all. >> welcome to the finish line --

cloves. we just pour a little bit of vegetable oil to bring it together. then i just give it a few pulses so it gets that nice crumbly, crunchy texture. i actually love to throw this on everything because it adds a lot of flavor. here we have our cooked sweet potatoes. if you want to start mashing. >> sure. >> go for it. i'm going to add coconut milk which keeps it creamy but is also vegan. when you have a lot of guests and don't really know what everyone's diet is, you might need a vegan dairy-free option. >> where do you get vegan marshmallows? is that a common thing? are all marshmallows vegan? >> they usually have gelatin in them which isn't vegan. just make sure you find marshmallows with no gelatin. i'm going to add some dried cranberries. raisins. dried currants, whatever you like. over here we have our finished
