a lot of people hoping to cast their ballots in north philly today. philadelphia may match or possibly exceed it's turnout record. >> philadelphia's turnout record set in 2008 when president obama won his first presidenti aia ai election. we'll be watching the results as they come in, and the two candidates have been waiting a long time for this day to arrive. let's go back to nbc10's erin coleman who's following the donald trump campaign. er erin? >> reporter: we have been here in new york city since yesterday morning, i can tell you security is so tight, you see officers

literally everywhere you turn. at the hilton hotel, that's where donald trump is going to be holding his invitation only party later on tonight. we saw preparations there hours before he was even in the state there's an undeniable show of force in new york city. new yorkers and tourists alike have noticed. >> i'm concerned, i guess, why. >> i think it's important to be prepared. please, god, they won't have to do anything, but if they do have to do anything, i would like to think there are plenty of them. >> reporter: this is the first time that both the democratic and republican nominees are spending election day in new york city. and they're only two miles away from one another. nypd police chief carlos gomez says he's not taking any chances.

>> this is the largest election detail that new york city has ever had. >> reporter: roads around trump tower, the hilton hotel and the gavin center is closed. police are also assigned to every single polling location in new york city, that's including all five boroughs, 1,200 different polling locations, i want to bring in my colleague lauren mak lauren mayk, she's down the street from clinton's polling center. >> they consider that very, very good news, they need a big turnout in philadelphia. now here in new york, this is where hillary clinton served as a u.s. senator. tonight the campaign is hoping that this is where she will celebrate a new title, one that makes history.

on to the glass screening at the javitz center in new york city, the stage is set full of expectations, it's decked out in red, white and a battery of campaign blue, she's preparing for what she's aimed for, to become the first woman president. >> so many people are counting on the outcome of this election. >> reporter: last night's rally with the president in philadelphia. >> it's essentially president obama saying she's the one. >> selena maxwell is with the clinton campaign. >> reporter: how are you guys feeling today? >> i think we're feeling cautiously optimistic. >> the clinton campaign is watching certain states very closely. >> we're looking at a battleground state like north carolina, we're looking at

florida, we're looking at nevada. >> in new york, aides walk the hall where the candidates will gather. >> you never know what's going to happen. >> reporter: the polls are still open so the campaigns still working this evening. and we have learned that hillary clinton will begin watching the results come in at a hotel in new york and then she will move here to the javitz center to continue watching and to deliver one of those two speeches. >> all right, lauren, thanks for that. >> you mentioned the polls, thes are open for about three more hours or so in pennsylvania, delaware and in new jersey. >> reporter: we have been talking about that high voter turnout and what that looks like on the ground literally is long

voter lines. take a look at this line in northern philadelphia, at temple's campus, you see those guys playing a game of frisbee as they wait and they have some time to kill. as we widen out even more, you can see it snake around the corner of that fence and then down the state here. this is the same location we were at on nbc10 news at 4:00. this line is moving, but new people are coming and standing on the end of it. and the polls are open in philadelphia until 8:00 tonight, it looks like many people in this crowd still have quite a time to wait. that is the latest from sky force 10. >> reporter: it is going to be a long night for a lot of us. back out here live at democracy

plaza, this is the headquarters where nbc news election coverage and we're going to be on the air from now until at least 2:00 in the morning until this is settled. we're going to have expert analysis to help you understand everything that's going on. >> for all those people who had to wait in those long lines today, at least it wasn't too cold out. sheena, what can we expect? >> it's going to get a little cooler an the sun goes down. by 6:00 p.m., philadelphia area should be still near 60 degrees, pennsylvania suburbs, lehigh valley, close to 60 degrees. by 7:00 p.m., dropping to about

the mid to low 50s. we will stay dry too about 8:00 p.m., temperatures in the mid to low 60s. a very comfortable evening if you're heading out to the polls, temperatures currently are in the 60s in some spots. 64 degrees in philadelphia, 62 in wilmington. we have talked about the possibility of record voter turnout today, that's the good news, but voters have also reported problems at their local polling sites. nbc10's harry hairston joins us now in center city. harry what did you find? >> reporter: i'm out here on south broad street and what you see is not what it was like earlier today. the line stretched all the way down to the end of the block here. but now some people are still trickling into this building. i do want to tell you earlier today, this morning it was off

to a rocky start for some, a small percentage of the polls that drew a red flag for those who are watching the process. election officials tell nbc10 news turnout is high. >> i was glad to see that the lines were out and that people are out and voting. >> reporter: nbc news reports the widespread reports of voting machines out of service. i asked district attorney seth williams about concerns of voter intimidation. >> we have had a few questions about that, but we have had no founded calls of any type of intimidation or voter fraud in the city of philadelphia as of 2:00 p.m. today. >> reporter: there are 268 polling places in philadelphia. the government watch dog group

is doing something it has never done in a presidential race before. it's conducting an online survey to help weed out voting issues to help improve the process. >> it seems like there's complaints in three areas, one is machine malfunction, two is long lines in some instances and three potentially people being asked for a voter id when they in fact don't need to produce that kind of id. >> election officials like al smith who have been keeping an eye on the process say they're seeing nothing nefarious. >> i went to one polling place that had a slow start this morning, the election board just didn't show up. we replaced that election board and replaced it with our own to make sure that it was up and running. >> reporter: he will investigate any reports of voter fraud or

down there by morrisville went to romney by a small margin. warring on the, north hampton township were being losses by president obama. four years earlier than that, you see warrington, also lower makefield voted democrat this year. there's only about 9,300 more registered democrats than republicans, so bucks could go either way tonight. another trouble area for republicans, we show you bucks county. guys, the day has finally arrived. i can't believe i'm saying that, we still have a few hours until

the polls close. after results start to come in, what will you be looking for tonight specifically? >> keith, i'm going to be looking at 7:00 p.m. for north carolina, polls close there, there has been massive early voting. if north carolina goes early for secretary clinton, then she becomes president clinton, and next up is florida at 8:00. a lot of early voting, maybe an early call, maybe an early night for secretary clinton. >> we're going to look for early voting, the polls closing at 7:00 in north carolina, we're going to look at florida and then ohio from there. because if donald trump isn't pulling off those states, he's not winning. >> we talk over and over again about voter turnout. who benefits most from that. jim, you start this time? >> the american people always benefit from for people voting,

democracieies benefits from tha. in terms of how it affects the candidates, the get out vote efforts, we have seen unprecedented turnout, it's a merit of who they're coming out and voting for. >> in terms of who it benefits, in philadelphia, where we have been looking at these lines all day, obviously that is good for hillary, amend that is good for katie. a higher turnout is good for hillary. as you get beyond the five county area, the turnout starts to benefit donald trump. >> jim schultz and mark alderman agree ing here. i like that.

we'll talk to you in a few minutes and see if you expect any surprises. >> no surprises in the weather department, election night looks great. we could see some rain in the morning? >> we like to not have surprises in the weather department when so many people are standing in line. and if you are standing in line for the next few hours, it's going to be beautiful, exton 46 degrees, the clouds are going to be increasing, but we do stay dry, temperatures are going to be chilly, but not as cold as they were this morning if you were standing in line, we have 30s across the area, in center city, we're still nice and dry, and it is a nice evening to be waiting in line. 64 right now is the temperature in philadelphia. many of our pennsylvania suburbs are currently in the 50s. we'll take a look at delaware,

newcastle county, mainly in the 60s, but greenville has dropped down to 59 degrees. this time of year, we are relatively mild. a live look another the radar, nice and dry, the closest rain is now moving into parts of western p.a., so that's the rain we'll be watching for tomorrow. it's getting closer, but it's not too impressive. we don't expect too much in the way of thunderstorms, it's going to be widespread light rainfall. tomorrow morning, widespread light rain. that slides through the rest of the area around lunchtime. and by the afternoon commute, it looks like we should be mostly dry, clearing even more as we go into thursday, and then temperatures start to drop off.

way around the building. cydney, what kind of turnout have you seen there? >> reporter: hey, keith i can tell you it's been strong and steady throughout the day today. election officials say since about 6:00 this morning, more than 500 or so voters have cast their ballots and as the traffic kicks up along route 70, we see the lines stretching out the door. >> it's really very important. >> reporter: voters across south jersey from camden to audobon to cherry hill, they say their responsibility on election die is to be part of the process of electing our next president. >> i know a lot of people are looking forward to it being over, but i think the next four years have been important either way. >> florence hoskins won't sleep until the votes are counted.

day coverage. i'm keith jones in the nbc10 studios. >> i'm erin coleman and i'm here in the democracy plaza, we're going to be here all night long until we have the results of all the races that matter to you. today i had a chance to speak with nbc's political editor mark murray about what he thinks is going to be the key to victory. >> i'm expecting a bigger turnout than we saw in 2012, but the hope is we're going to get to the 2008 level. but it will be a little bit more than we saw four years ago. the one usually benefits democrats in a state like pennsylvania and in particular philadelphia, the better the turnout, the better it is for the democrats.

that's why you saw president obama along with hillary clinton in philadelphia early and often. and last night, and before, it's all about firing up and getting a big turnout. donald trump's chance of victory in the state of pennsylvania is a low turnout, particularly in democratic strong holds. >> we're a battle ground state, pennsylvania, it all comes down to today, that's it. >> that's why you see a progression at big events, especiallily the clinton campaign to starting that vote energized, which they have been paying particular attention the early voting states like pennsylvania and south carolina. and new hampshire, and then of course michigan. so they almost had a two prong strategy, start early on the early voting state and then close in on the ones that wait until election day. >> reporter: this has been an

interesting election season to say the least, but donald trump has changed the way we look at and talk about politicians? >> my take on donald trump's n candaidac candidacy, it did fire up the republican base who may have felt neglected by the chamber of commerce crowd or the business community. and what donald trump was able to do is really light a fire underneath them. and the donald trump campaign was kind of a reflection of the 2016 campaign, a lot of low insults. you're talking about jailing your opponent are places we have never been to before. >> reporter: we are all waiting to see who is going to come out on top. be sure to stay with nbc news throughout the night, we are going to be here throughout the night. the polls are open for about 2

1/2 hours or so in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. now the after work rush has begun. let's go to nbc10's george spencer who's live in sky force 10. >> reporter: we have been talking about high voter turnout in philadelphia and it's also happening in the pennsylvania suburbs. this is evergreen elementary school, where people are telling us there's about four different lines snaking around this school. and then people stacked two deep in each line. it is taking people quite a while just to get inside to vote. this is a significant wait and there's a wait once you get inside these doors as well. this live video surely attests to a large turnout.

where we saw katie mcginty cast her ballot this morning. it's been a busy day for her. after she cast her ballot, she thanked her volunteers. here's hillary clinton at a democratic staging office in philadelphia. hillary clinton also showed her appreciation to a bus load of voters in new york. you can see there was a long line at this polling place, she posted a reminder, if you're in line at 8:00, you can still vote. we caught up with mcginty supporter pat carlson who voted in her home polling place. >> i didn't like the other campaign, the way toomey ran against her. if i heard shady katy again, i

was going to -- >> reporter: an election official told me 1,400 of the 1,800-double the average of the turnout for most past presidential elections and that's more than when obama ran in 2008. we'll see if this helps mcginty out, we'll continue to follow her progress throughout the evening. >> and i'm randy gyllenhaal, tracking the toomey campaign. we're told the incumbent senator is going to cast his vote later on tonight. it's a question toomey has been actively avoiding, whether he would support donald trump. but waiting until late in the election day, means most people have cast their election in the senate race before giving his

>> reporter: thanks to you both. i want to send it back to my colleague keith jones in the nbc10 studios. you've been taking a closer look of the importance of the pennsylvania suburbs. and one area in particular that's really important for donald trump. >> what a difference four years can make. there's no better example to show you than burks county. i want you to take a look at this map. this is from 2012, from that election year, key areas like redding, exiter, they all went to president obama that year, but it wasn't enough to win the entire county, mitt romney won all of burks by less than 1%. that was a big loss for president obama too. take a look at what happens in 2008, abbeyville township went to john mccain, but president

obama was a able to win lehigh county. another key area, republicans were able to gain some ground in the last presidential election, 2012. here we go, allentown, white hall, and also asenator mccain picked up washington township, all the way up there in the county, but president obama still won more than 15 points that year. if the gop can close the goop like mitt romney did in 2012, then the lehigh valley could go to trump. whatever race matters to you, nbc will be tracking the results all night long, our coverage doesn't stop, from now until the

i'm erin coleman, we're live in new york city at democracy plaza. this is where election night is going to unfold for us here at nbc. we have been telling you all day about how voter turnout is key. a lot of the reason for that is first-time voters. deanna durante spoke to one man who went to the polls for the first time at 75. >> reporter: you can see that we do have some lines here in schuylkill township, not far from where jim lives and where he voted for the first time. jim cool has been to the chester county technical school many times. >> i work part-time a couple of
