people. >> right now donald trump is elected the 45th president of the united states. it is an astonishing victory for the former reality tv show host. he vows to be a president for all americans including nearly half of the country who did not vote for him. instead of being ton cusp of victory hillary clinton goes down in stunning defeat. the glass ceiling remains unbroken as the united states still waits for the first woman president. we are waiting for the former secretary of state and first lady to give her first remarks since losing to donald trump. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. president-elect trump will meet tomorrow to talk about the transition. it comes after a stunning and historic victory. our team coverage begins with
11:02 am
rosemary conner. a lot of people didn't see this coming. >> trump's past 270 electoral votes was very narrow. during his victory speech early this morning trump called his campaign a movement of millions. >> it is a movement comprised of americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and believes who want and expect our government to serve the people and serve the people it will. >> trump's family joined him on stage to a cheering crowd of supporters at the hilton midtown. the tone of his speech was very different than what we have heard over these months on the campaign trail. he spoke about yieting republicans. president obama reached out to him this morning. >> it was a very warm c conversation. we were happy to receive the call from the president.
11:03 am
they had a great conversation ability mr. tufrp's victory. i think they resolved to work today. >> now, hillary clinton is expected to speak in a few moments. nbc news will have a special report. we'll bring it to you live right here on nbc 10. >> thank you. our team coverage continues with a look at how young people are reacting to the surprising result. we are live. what are the young people saying on campus? >> reporter: hi, vai. we sat in on what's being called a most mortum discussion.
11:04 am
>> we had a popular vote split. >> reporter: on this morning after the election of donald trump political professors lead students in a frank conversation. we heard descriptions like upset and describing to describe trump's victory. one was were the polls giving hillary clinton an edge wrong. we spoke with students about trump being selected as the 45th president. >> i think it's because donald trump is like more -- has more followers on twitter and more people like want to follow him because he will make america great again. >> it is not per se donald trump that worries me but really what a fully controlled house and senate and white house would do to any progress made within the last eight years.
11:05 am
>> reporter: now, all morning long we have been talking to not only students but people from trenton. we are working to bring you those comments in the next half hour. live now monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, monique. pat toomie is heading back to washington for a second term. it was the costliest political race in senate history. toomey was seeking a second term after compiling one of the voting records in congress. toomey congratulated mcginty. he said he will take the fight back to washington. >> it is really pretty simple. i don't think the government should be wasting as much money as it wastes. i don't think it should be spending as much money as it spends. i don't think taxes should be as high as they are.
11:06 am
>> mcginty was that challenged toomey and last night she reacted to her loss. >> look, we are not going to stop fighting for the issues that we care about. as a mom, i will be out there still fighting to make sure every beautiful child had good schools, safe communities and a chance to succeed. >> it helps republicans keep control of the senate. we have live team coverage all morning long. make sure you have the nbc 10 app as we continue to get results from decision 2016. an old mill goes up in flames in wilmington. this was the view from sky force 10 a few hours ago. the fire is now under control. crews are still putting out hot spots there. we are live in wilmington. pam, tell us what happened.
11:07 am
>> reporter: well, this fire started five hours ago. that fire fight isn't over yet. you can see the flames from where we are right now. firefighters are working to keep the hot spots under control. you can see the mobile command center has been set up here as well. we are about a mile as well. they have arrived on scene. right now i want to give you a better look at what crews were up against when that fire broke out this morning. it was massive. five vacant commercial buildings were completely destroyed. i want to give you a look now at the ground. the chief tells me the most difficult part was the location. the burning buildings were making it very tough to reach not to mention the hydrants that were available weren't really equipped to handle this type of fire. 68 units from across the tristate area responded to help out here. the delaware national guard task
11:08 am
force was called in to supply water to fire crews. no firefighters or civilians were injured. take a listen to what the chief is talking about, how the buildings themselves created the biggest challenge for firefighters. >> it was very labor intensive. there was a large volume of wood. these are old factories built in the 1920s. they were vacant so there wasn't a lot of materials inside. a lot of that fire load was based on the building itself. >> reporter: something to keep in mind if you live or travel in the area, road close shuures wi in there for the remainder of the day. we are talking about park drive near the area firefighters are asking you to stay away from as
11:09 am
they try to get things under control. the cause of the fire is being investigated right now. my colleague is here. he is on the ground as well working to gather more information. he'll be following the investigation throughout the day about we'll have much more on later editions of nbc 10 news. i'm pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. well, people walking to work and school are dealing with some wet weather this wednesday. we found lots of folks using umbrellas to stay dry near the university neighborhood this morning. let's bring in glenn "hurricane" schwartz. you also saw that fire mill in delaware that could have been helped by the rain. that fire startinged at 2:30 in the morning. >> that's right. the rain does continue. it obviously helps in that area. this is a live shot. can you guess where it is?
11:10 am
that's the art museum there, ben franklin parkway. it is raining across the entire area right now. this portion is moving to the east. this portion is moving more to the south. so that's little rotation in here that's slowing things down. so it's not just that this area will move out, we have that other area to deal with for this afternoon. it's not just about to end but it is getting lighter across most of the area. as you can see, we have a little bit heavier rain right at the shore and that will be moving out as well. the futurecast hour by hour shows that threat of rain even into the afternoon rush at least in parts of the area as the lehigh valley starts drying out by 6:00. the rest of the area will take a little while longer. that clearing trend will definitely continue. we will also continue to stay in
11:11 am
the 50s across most of the area. just about everybody is reporting some rain. everybody is in the 50s right now. we are going to be seeing an afternoon with more rain. by this evening we are cdrying out and in some places clearing out. it will set us up for more sunny days. we'll see if that's going to last through the weekend in just a few minutes. >> thank you. most of the area driving around with windshield wipers on. let's get a check on the road with jessica boyington. what are you seeing out there? >> we are seeing problems out there. 295, we'll start here. on the northbound side near route 130 all lanes are still getting by. we are watching reduced visibility as well. an accident up north near west main street to watch for. we are seeing about 40 minute delays. this is for flights arriving to philly. we are seeing delays there and
11:12 am
ten minute delays on the regional rails. the rest of mass transit doing just fine. lastly, we'll see a little bit of slow speeds on 95. our cameras around the betsy ross bridge. it it is better to go slower on the wet slippery roads. >> thank you. donald trump's stunning win is the biggest news coming out of 2016. just ahead, a look at some of the other key battles, one during election night.
11:15 am
pennsylvania's next attorney general will be josh shapiro. beat rafferty 51 to 49%. in new jersey second congressional district covering the southern jersey shor shore lobiondo over david cole. in the race for the only congressional seat, rochester accounted for 56% of the vote. hans reigle had 41%. she becomes the first woman elected to congress. new jersey voters reject a measure to allow casinos at two
11:16 am
locations. the noes carried by 78% which means casino gambling will remain legal only in atlantic city. the second question is whether the state should dedicate money from the recent 23 cent gas tax increase. yes 54% and no 46%. carney won with 58% of the vote against bonini. hall-long got 59% of the vote and lamar gunn 41%. back to the presidential victory for donald trump. many wondering how it will address key issues effecting millions of americans. policy expert michael hayes talks to us about where trump stands on immigration, health care and cuba.
11:17 am
>> he hasn't really detailed what he will do with the affordable health care act. it is unclear if he will repeal the entire policy or he will only get rid of the affordable health care act. it is unclear how donald trump will approach the immigration policy. there are certain short-term things he could handle. one thing is restrict the number of foreign refugees coming from syria. in terms of a grand plan he will have to work with republicans and democrats. >> he said it's hard to know what the specifics of trump's plans will be because trump mostly spoke in general terms during his campaign. paul ryan is talking about the election right now. let's take a listen in. this is from his hometown of jamesville, wisconsin. >> and now donald trump will lead a unified republican government, and we will work hand in hand on a positive
11:18 am
agenda to tackle this country's big challenges. i want to congratulate mike pence. he will make a great vice president. i you need to know how proud we are a of -- i want to congratulate -- >> that is paul ryan with remarks about trump's presidency. ryan was elected to support trump in the start of the campaign. overnight he called the president-elect and congratulated him. >> what a phenomenal job.
11:19 am
look at it this ways. our house majority is bigger than expected. we won more seats than anyone expected and much of that is thanks to donald trump. donald trump provided the kind of coat tails that got a lot of people over the finish line so we could maintain our strong house and senate majorities. now we have important work to do. many months ago republicans in the house united around a bold specific agenda for this country. it will help us hit the ground running as we work with donald trump to do this. we will honor the timeless principals that our country was founded on, liberty, freedom, free enterprise and we will apply those principles. i want to close with this. there is no doubt our democracy can be very messy. we do remain a sharply divided country, but now, as we do every
11:20 am
four years, we have to work to heal the devisioivision of a lo campaign. i think donald trump set the perfect tone last night for doing just this. i know president obama and secretary clinton are committed to bringing the country together. it needs to be a time of redempti redemption. we all need to rededicate ourself to making it a more perfect union. with that let me take your questions. . >> reporter: some of your colleagues were critical of you thinking you had not embraced donald trump enough during the campaign. is your relationship with the president-elect and your conservatives in the house in tact? >> i think our relationship is fine. i have spoken with donald twice in the last eight hours. i spoke with mike pence twice as
11:21 am
well. i think we are going to hit the ground running. we are already talking about getting our transitions. they just voted. i think what donald trump pulled off is an enormous political feat. he just earned a mandate and we now just have a unified republican government. if you listened to us in the closing days of this campaign whether it was criss crossing america or criss crossing wisconsin we were making a repeal for all americans. that's where we are. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> we had great conversations about how we worked together on the transition to make this work together. we are trying to get our schedules to how we build our transition and how we go forward. i am excited about our ability to work together.
11:22 am
>> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> i'll say to wisconsin, look at these issues. look at the potential for our country. look at the direction we have been going and look a at what a unified can get you. for the first time since 1984 wisconsin ten electoral votes went to republicans. charles, you saw it. we didn't think it could happen. donald trump turned it on its head. donald trump delivered the ten electoral votes. he helped elect a strong majority in the senate and strong majority in the house. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ]
11:23 am
>> i think after a tough campaign where people believe they were pitching so hard for one side or the other this health care law is not a popular law. this health care law is collapsing under its own weight. for repealing and replacing obamacare this congress, this senate majority has already demonstrated and proven we are able to put it ton president's desk. president obama voe teetoed it. with unified republican government we can fix this. we can fix these problems. it's not just the health care law we can replace. we have shown the willingness. there are so many things we are excited about. think about the laid off coworkers that see relief coming. think about the farmers being harassed. think about the ranchers in the west getting harassed by the department. there is relief coming.
11:24 am
this is good for our country. this means that we can lift the weight of the state, restore the constitution. think about the conservative constitution respecting judging that will be nominated. >> we have been listening to paul ryan in wisconsin praising donald trump and pledging to work together with him and to pass a republican agenda. now we have other news happening here in new york. >> let's swing our camera to new york city where hillary clinton is moments away from addressing her defeat for the first time. we did not see her last night after donald trump won that stunning victory and the senior staff has assembled at this hotel room in new york city. we expect her to be moments away. andrea mitchell is in the room. are you getting any incite into what we might here from secretary clinton? >> reporter: i think you'll hear a promise to be uplifting and hopeful and helpful.
11:25 am
she talked to the president this morning. he called her, i believe, not the other way around, shortly after he spoke to donald trump. this room has been filled now with the staff, senior staff and the congressman who is so close to her. there were cheers moments ago when sullivan and the top staff members came in and there were shouts of hillary, hillary. some of the other people here seated a long time hillary clinton friends, former diplomats, women friends who show up on primary nights, who keep her cheered up when times were difficult along the way. so this is a gathering of hillary land, if you will. a lot of them go back to the social secretary of east wing when she was first lady. this is a team of friends and of allies that have long been involved in the project of
11:26 am
hillary clinton becoming president of the united states. bill clinton will be here as well. you're going to hear, i think, a sad but grateful hillary clinton today thanking supporters. >> standby for a second. we have chuck todd in the studio. how hard of a speech will it be for hillary clinton? >> she has done it before when losing to barack obama. this one is different. this was hard to take. she really believed she was going to be the next president of the united states and it was a -- i think -- i don't think she -- my guess is she is probably not ready to give this speech, but for the country she has to give this speech. >> just where they were 24 hours ago. the mood inside the campaign was celebratory. >> look what they picked. they even created the big the
11:27 am
glass ceiling. they had katie perry ready to sing. it was lady gaga, cher. as they were celebrating look what happened. it is sort of -- when you look at it in hindsight, what a contrast. >> there are some long faces. those are top staffers of hillary clinton who have been on the road with her, both secretary of state. >> i'll tell you, rob by who is right there, rob by was on the '08 campaign. he has been planning her run for presidency for eight years. >> as has she! i think one of the ironies here is there was such a big dust up when donald trump said he wasn't
11:28 am
sure if he would conceive the election. there became a lot of talk about what a graceful concession looks like and the peaceful transfer of power. if you're a fan of irony here it is. hillary clinton is now having to deliver that very thing. >> consider this, this may be the last major speech that we hear clinton give as sort of as ahead or one of the heads of the democratic parties. >> we all talked about if donald trump what kind of coverage would we give to him in the months and years ahead. the question is what kind of profile does hillary clinton have? >> i think the democratic party has a history of this, when you lose, good-bye. that happened -- and john kerry sort of recovered. it happened to walter mondale. >> the clinton foundation took
11:29 am
some hits during this campaign and came in for a lot of scrutiny. what does that look like isn't the future? it has been the clinton family work for the last 15, 16 years. >> there's no shortage of democrats who look at the history of the democratic party and say the clintons have succeeded but the democratic party hasn't always succeeded with them. she gained a senate seat but the party is a mess. >> do you have any incite -- i guess we could all assume why it is but last night john comes out and says we'll have a lot more to say tomorrow and within the hour she can calls and concedes with donald trump. >> in other words, not that they necessarily thought there was more votes to come but she
11:30 am
wasn't quite ready -- >> she wasn't quite ready to do this. this was apparently supposed to happen earlier this morning. it has been steadily delayed 15, 20 minutes at a time. >> people forget politicians are human beings too. >> this might be it. you know? this is sort of the period at the end of the political career here. it is a tough thing to do. my guess is the weight of the moment has hit her in some ways where the weight of the moment has hit that crowd. >> when you talk to candidates who run for office they will look at it as people who poured their lives and hopes -- >> and jennifer has worked for the clintons since 1996. >> so a lot of feeling of i let
11:31 am
you down type thing too. >> and even though the mood there is incredibly somber i would imagine she is going to get a rousing ovation when she walks into that room. >> yes. the personal loyalty the staff had for her was tighter than personal loyalty for the staff with bill. hillary is slightly different and they look up to her in ways differently than that clinton crowd looks up to bill. there is a connectivity to her. >> this looks like a wake. >> and when they do the forensics before the results came everyone was saying whether a well executed campaign this was. the results certainly throw that into a different light. >> there is an uncomfortable the part has been this wikileaks. it got normalized in our system.
11:32 am
it gave you a picture -- and i go back -- i brought it up a bunch of times, they couldn't find a message. we saw how they were searching for a message and searching how she was going to connect with a democratic party. >> tim kaine will be introducing secreta secretary clinton. what does this hold for his future? >> a lot of people believed he could be one of the leaders of the party. i think he takes a hit on this wuchb one. he is from virginia. virginia is a good place to build a base from. i wouldn't be surprised if we -- if tim kaine shows up. we'll start seeing that soon. you know, that happens, party out of power. you know, you guys laugh but it
11:33 am
will probably be in january. >> we are just not ready for it. >> just 14 hyundais away. i think matt asked this question for you. it's worth discussing again. who is the head of the democratic party now? obviously president obama. >> and like i said, chuck is senate democratic leader. he will be the guy that has to -- on capitol hill that tries to hold up the agenda or fights for -- basically playing and hoping and preparing democratics for the midterms. let's take a look at who's coming in. >> obviously secretary clinton can't be far behind. we do expect president clinton
11:34 am
11:35 am
>> i'm proud of hillary clinton because she has been and is a great history maker in everything she has done as a civil rights lawyer and first lady of arkansas and first lady of this country and senator and secretary of state. she has made history in a nation that is good at so many things but has made it uniquely difficult far woman to be elected to federal office. she became the first major party nominee and last night won the popular vote of america. [ cheers and applause ]
11:36 am
>> that is an amazing accomplishment. i'm proud of hillary clinton because she held vast to dreams. she was inspired at a young age to an that if a family does well -- in everything she has done she focused on that. we know she would have made history of a president in one sense but we never had a president who made their whole career about the empowerment of family and children. i was excited about that as i was to have hillary there and make history as the first woman president. i am excited of hillary because she has built such a wonderful team. there is a -- [ cheers and applause ] >> there is a beautiful and kind of comical parable in the new
11:37 am
testament. he hires people at noon. i'm going to pay you the same thing for half day. he hires people i will pay you the same. those who started earlier in the day hold on. we don't like people that came late just as well as you're treating us. the team she assembled over the year of people that are so deeply loyal to her because she is so deeply loyal to her is inspiring. i have seen that same degree of loyalty and compassion and sensitivity extentded to the most recent teams than those that came to the vineyard with one hour to go. the loyalty if you're with you you're with you and that is something so remarkable. finally i'm proud of hillary because she loves this country.
11:38 am
nobody had to wonder about hillary clinton, whether she would accept an outcome of an election in our beautiful democra democracy. nobody had to ask that question. nobody had to doubt it. she knows our country for what it is. she knows the system that we have and in its blemishes she is deeply in love with it and accepts it. she has been in battles where if it didn't go her way she accepted it but she woke up and that love of country is something that is obvious to everybody. i want to thank hillary clinton for asking us to join this wild ride. about a week before she asked if i would be a running meat and i went up to west chester. we sat down with hillary and bill and chelsea and mark for about three hours of
11:39 am
conversation to try to determine whether we would be the right people to be on the ticket. when we got in the car to head back to the airport after the three hour discussion i said i don't know if we will be on this ticket or not but we'll remember that three hours for the rest of our life and now we'll remember 105 days we have had with this fantastic couple of public servants for the rest of our life. i will say this, hillary and i know well the wisdom and words of william faulkner. he said they killed us but they ain't whooped us yet. they ain't whooped us yet because we know -- we know that the work remains. we know that the dreams of
11:40 am
empowering children and families remain. in that important work that we have to do as a nation, it is so comforting even at a tough time to know that hillary clinton is somebody until her very last breath is going to be battling for the values that we care so deeply about. join me in welcoming secretary hillary rodham clinton.
11:41 am
>> thank you. thank you all. thank you. thank you all very much. thank you. thank you. thank you so much. very rowdy group. thank you, my friends. thank you. thank you. thank you so very much for being here. i love you all too. last night i congratulated donald trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. i hope that he will be a successful president for all americans. this is not the outcome we
11:42 am
wanted or we worked so hard for, and i'm sorry that we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country. but i feel -- i feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together, this vast, diverse, creative, unruly, energized campaign. you respepresent the best of america and being your candidate is one of the greatest honors of my life. i know how disappointed you feel, because i feel it too and so do tens of millions of americans who invested their
11:43 am
hopes and dreams in this effort. this is painful and it will be for a long time, but i want you to remember this. our campaign was never about one person or even one election. it was about the country we love and about building an america that's hopeful, inclusive and big hearted. we have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought, but i still believe in america and i always will. and if you do then we must accept this result and then look to the future. donald trump is going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and chance to lead. our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power. we don't just respect that, we cherish it. it also enshrines other things,
11:44 am
the rule of law, the principal that we are all equal in rights and dignity, freedom of warship and expression. we respect and cherish these values too and we must defend them. and let me add, our constitutional democracy demands our participation not just every four years, but all of the time. so let's do all we can to keep advancing the causes and values we all hold dear, making our economy work for everyone, not just those at the top, protecting our country and protecting our planet and breaking down all of the barriers that hold any american back from achieving their
11:45 am
dreams. we have spent a year and a half bringing together millions of people from every corner of our country to say with one voice that we believe that the american dream is big enough for everyone, for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for lgbt people and people with disabilities, for everyone. so now our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part to build that better, stronger, fairer america we see and i know you will. i am so grateful to stand with all of you. i want to thank tim kaine and
11:46 am
ann for being our partners on this journey. it has been a joy getting to know them better and it gives me great hope and comfort to know that tim will remain on the front lines of our democracy representing virginia in the senate. to barack obama and michelle obama our country owes you an enormous depth of gratitude.
11:47 am
>> we thank you for your graceful determined leadership that has meant so much to so many americans and people across the world. and to bill and chelsea, mark, charlotte, aiden, our brothers and our entire family, my love for you means more to you than i could ever express. you criss crossed this country on our behalf and lifted me up when i needed it most, even four month old aiden who traveled with his mom. i will always be grateful to the creative, talented, dedicated men and women at our headquarters in brooklyn and across our country.
11:48 am
you poured your hearts into this campai campaign. for some of you who are veterans it was a campaign after you had done other campaigns. some of you it was your first campaign. i want each of you to know that you were the best campaign anybody could have ever expected or wanted. and to the millions of volunteers, community leaders, activists and union organizers who knocked on doors, talked to neighbors, posted on facebook even in secret private facebook sit sites, i want everybody coming out from behind that and make sure your voices are heard going forward.
11:49 am
to everyone who sent in contributions as small as $5 and kept us going, thank you. thank you from all of us. and to the young people in particular, i hope you will hear this. i have, as tim said, spent my entire adult life fighting for what i believe in. i have had successes and i have had set backs, some times really painful ones. many of you are at the beginning of your professional public and political careers. you will have successes and setbacks too. this loss hurts, but please, never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it.
11:50 am
11:51 am
now, i know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling but some day someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now. and to all of the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.
11:52 am
finally, i am so grateful for our country and for all it has given to me. i count my blessings every single day that i am an american, and i still believe as deeply as i ever have that if we stand together and work together with respect for our differences, strength in our convictions and love for this nation our best days are still ahead of us. because you know, you know, i believe we are stronger together and we will go forward together. and you should never ever regret fighting for that. you know, scripture tells us,
11:53 am
let us not grow weary in doing good for in due season we should reap if we do not lose heart. so my friends, let us have faith in each other. let us not grow weary, let us not lose heart. for there is more seasons to come and there is more work to do. i am incredibly honored and grateful to have had this chance to represent all of you in this election. may god bless you and may god bless the united states of america. >> hillary clinton speaking to supporters and friends and family members here in new york city. gracious, eloquent, hopeful saying we owe him an open mind and a chance to lead. >> you have to wonder if she had a lump in her throat a few moments in that speech. it can't have been easy to give.
11:54 am
it is not the speech she thought she would give. having talked so much about the people transfer of power she showed what that looks like. >> twice she has had to give these gut-wrenching concession speeches. this one probably ten times rougher than the one she did in '08. she hit every note. she hit every single note that anybody would have wanted her to give whether you're a trump supporter or clinton supporter, whether you're president obama or president-elect trump. >> a lot of tears in that room though none from secretary clinton. >> she came close. >> yeah. i think the only thing came from tim kaine in introducing her when he said about hillary clinton, no one ever had to wonder whether she would accept the outcome of the election, a direct reference to some of the
11:55 am
comments trump made in the closing weeks of this campaign. >> you know, i guess you have to -- you know, it was a little vague. it might not have done it in a moment like this. might have saved that in an interview with the new york times or something. >> he got a lot of applause when he pointed out she won the popular vote. >> nancy pelosi brought this up and said because she won the popular vote he has to work in this outreach. i like this infrastructure plan. she actually to me said okay. she threw her cards down and said okay. i'll try to work with him. >> it occurred to me in watching him that the clintons have seen political phenomenon from both directions. bill clinton was one himself all of those years ago. hillary clinton lost to one and trump. >> you missed one. >> which one?
11:56 am
