robbery. the app trap. the new way criminals are targeting you through your smartphone. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. mr. trump goes to washington. the president-elect takes a major step in the transition of power. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >> reporter: and i'm jim rosenfield live in washington on mr. trump's first day as president-elect. he got a behind the scenes look at the government he will now be leading. he toured the halls of power in congress today, meeting with the leaders of the house and senate. but president-elect trump's most high-profile meeting came in the oval office today with the man he will replace, president obama. once bitter political rivals -- >> obama is an incompetent, and the most ignorant president in our history. he has been a disaster. >> i continue to believe mr.

trump will not be president. >> reporter: coming face to face at the white house for the start of the transition process. >> most of all, i want to emphasize to you, mr. president-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed. >> so, mr. president, it was a great honor being with you, and i look forward to being with you many, many more times. >> reporter: after today's 90-minute meeting with president obama, president-elect trump walked the halls of congress with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and got a look at where he'll be sworn in from house speaker paul ryan. the soon to be commander in chief armed with a monumental task of making 4,000 political appointments as the clock ticks toward inauguration day. >> there are hundreds of federal agencies. you don't have a lot of time here. they're scrambling as they should. >> reporter: but the incoming president will have help thanks to the partnership for public service, a non-partisan group working to make the transition a

smooth one. >> the white house is virtually empty around inauguration day, and historically there have not been instruction manuals for the incoming team. this is what we can change and do so much better. this cycle, we should be prepared. >> reporter: a lot of work ahead, and another transition to talk about for the first lady. first lady michelle obama also met today with melania trump, the future first lady, at the white house. that meeting was not open to the news media, but the white house did release an official photo from their confab. and they toured the white house residence. they talked about raising children in the white house as well. barron trump, as we know, 10 years old, sasha obama, the same age when she moved into the white house. so some similarities there. tonight we're learning more about who may be joining president-elect trump's cabinet and other high-profile jobs. it includes some of his longest supporters. some of these names we've been hearing in the past couple of days according to a couple of

sources. dr. ben carson is being considered for education or health and human services secretary. also trump campaign chairman steve bannon is up for chief of staff along with rnc chairman reince priebus. former general mike flynn could be secretary of state or national security advisor. and also rudy giuliani being considered for attorney general while newt gingrich is up for secretary of state. now, new jersey governor chris christie also being mentioned as possibly up for a position in the trump administration. today we learned he's being trusted with the nation's top secrets. we'll explore that and how else the trump presidency could impact people in our area coming up in a few minutes. now, in the days since donald trump was elected president, we've seen anti-trump protests on the streets of many of our nation's cities, including in philadelphia. and it is not sitting well with the president-elect. he's been tweeting out tonight. here's what he said. just had a very open and successful presidential

election. now professional protesters incited by the media are protesting. very unfair, he said. and for the second straight day, skyforce10 was over anti-trump protests in philadelphia. hundreds of people marching through the streets of center city. earlier the multi racial fem knit coalition gop hands off me held a vigil outside philadelphia city hall. the group behind tonight's event not part of wednesday's protests in the city. also some turmoil inside a bucks county school related to this election to tell you about. students found some hateful graffiti scattered across the campus. so we went to visit. the messages scrawled in ball point pen praised president-elect trump, but they also contained nazi imagery like swastikas and threatening messages to lgbt students. the school district says a hispanic student also received a note telling her to go back to mexico. we spoke to the student who

found the stricribbled messages a poster in the bathroom. >> it's just an act against human decency. it doesn't matter which side of the political spectrum you're on or which candidate you supported. it's just not right overall. >> reporter: the election of donald trump has led to many students asking questions in the classroom as well. teachers at constitution high school in center city told nbc10 many kids showed up sad, even angry after the election results. some students also say they're worried about what this new president-elect thinks about them as minorities and immigrants. >> trying to get jobs is going to be harder because she's hispanic. just because she's a citizen, to him, in my mind it don't mean anything because she's still hispanic. >> how does that make you feel? >> sad. i was throwing pillows around. >> reporter: teachers say they've also tried to create a safe space for students to talk about these feelings and understand those who may have

different ones. donald trump's presidency, though, is continuing to have a positive effect on wall street. today the dow closed at a new record high, finishing up more than 218 points. the dow has gained nearly 500 points in the two days since mr. trump won the election. the s&p 500 up 4% in that same time span. the nasdaq is up 3%. now, we've been talking about president-elect trump for the past couple of days, but today hillary clinton surfaced in an unusual and unexpected place. we're going to show you where, show you what happened coming up in just a few minutes. but for now, live in the nation's capital, jim rosenfield, nbc10 news. jacqueline, back to you in the studio. new at 11:00, skyforce10 over the scene of a house fire in burlington county. you can see the flames engulfing the top floor and the roof of a

home. there was another fire here back in june. no word on what caused the most recent one or if anyone was injured. new from rowan university, a student in the hospital after a phone charger caught fire in his pocket. nbc10's brandon hudson is on the ground. brandon, so scary. what were you able to find out about talking to a witness? >> reporter: jacqueline, a few minutes ago we spoke to russ kinney, a student who told me there was an awful smell and a noticeable burn mark on the ground inside this building to my left. it's all because of a portable phone charger, which is concerning because kinney says he carries one of those too as probably most students do here on campus. we're told university staff had to evacuate the university center or the student center for at least 45 minutes to clean up. everyone inside had to leave, which was about 100 to 150 students. a spokesman said a student was inside when he felt something burning in his pokcket. the young man put out the fire, took out his portable phone

charger and threw it on the ground. >> i saw some guy leaving the student center, and you could smell it. like it smelled like chemicals burning, and you could see he was holding like his pants like in his hand. and there was a big, big burn mark in. he was limping, i will say. i saw him limping. so he might have -- he probably burned himself pretty bad on his leg. >> reporter: so we know that student has burns on his leg. he is now at kennedy hospital. the university has not said which brand or model that portable phone charger is. live at rowan university, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. tonight we are learning more about an armed robbery where the suspect pulled a gun on a young child. this is surveillance video taken from a family dollar store in the northwest part of philadelphia. police say a woman in a burka pulled a gun and pointed it at the child's head and also at a sales clerk. we're told the child and his guardian left the store before police arrived. no word if they knew the gunman.

the woman got away with $232 from the register. a 69-year-old man is tied up and robbed inside his home in northeast philadelphia. the thieves got away with tens of thousands of dollars. the victim says the two robbers knocked on his door in bustleton yesterday. when he opened it, they pushed him to the ground. they then zip tied his hands and searched his home. the robbers got away with $98,000 in cash and jewelry. no arrests have been made. an nbc10 exclusive. an emergency on the water. an suv plunges into a pond with a woman and two dogs inside. how it happened and what it took for firefighters to save the day. glenn. i'm tracking a cold, windy blast. plus a foespotential nor'easter. first alert neighborhood weather including your weekend forecast coming up. smartphone schemes. the new way criminals are using apps to steal your money.

president-elect trump. that comes after an election in which toomey criticized mr. trump and did not publicly endorse him. toomey says he will still remain an independent voice for pennsylvania. >> there will be times when i will disagree with donald trump, as i have in recent months. and when i disagree, i will say so. i will not be a rubber stamp for anyone. >> reporter: toomey says he expects to meet with president-elect trump next week. of course, i defeated democratic candidate katie mcginty in a very tight race there. president-elect trump's visit to the capital gave us some indication about his biggest priorities. they will have different impacts in pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware. nbc10's drew smith has been looking into this, and he's joining us now in our breaking news center. >> reporter: jim, trump made a lot of promises in this campaign. today he affirmed that immigration, health care, and jobs are his top three priorities.

the incoming leadership of this country got to know each other better today, laying out an agenda for a new era in washington. trump promising to make people happy on a controversial issue, immigration. in philadelphia, there are concerns about the campaign promise to cut funds from sanctuary cities. >> making america great again is at the cost of the pain and the separation of families. it's just heartbreaking. >> reporter: then there's health care as a repeal of the affordable care act seems likely. >> what question is what does trump care look like and how do the most poor and vulnerable members of the philadelphia community deal with whatever those changes end up being? >> reporter: in new jersey, the most immediate impact could be a new governor. >> if there's some role for me that i want to do and that the president-elect wants me to do. >> reporter: tonight, nbc news learned governor christie

gerster told her voting for her was one of her proudest moments as a mother. off went the clintons with their dog. bill clinton, we are told, did call president-elect trump today to congratulate him on his victory. reporting live in washington, jim rosenfield, nbc10 news. jacqueline, back to you in philly. >> jim, margo said she needed to clear her head. likely hillary clinton did too. nice that they could meet. now to some video you'll only see on nbc10 news. firefighters in sussex county rescued two dogs out of a delaware pond today. the suv ended up in the water after it was hit by another car around 11:00 this morning just outside the state park. firefighters say this rescue was almost routine for them. >> train for these type of incidents, and this one being very fortunate that the water was calm and shallow. so this was actually a fairly easy rescue to make. >> the woman driving the suv was

also rescued. she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. both dogs also appear to be okay. people were dancing the night away during telemundo 62's latin night. ♪ dozens came out to take part in the event at park's casino in bensal bensalem. the event includes free salsa lessons, music and giveaways. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas in center city. christmas village in philadelphia is coming to city hall. setup is already under way as they get ready for next weekend's preview event. it features an open-air german market, live entertainment, and an ice cating rink. the christmas village will be open through christmas eve. soon enough, it will feel like christmas. our temperatures taking a dive soon, glenn. >> yeah, but it's only temporary. i don't see any kind of a change to a winter-like pattern, at

least for the next couple of weeks. we're got some beautiful-looking weather here. we had that today. we're going to have it tomorrow, at least for half of the day. it's in the 40s to near 5 degrees right now with clear skies. the wind picking up, and that's allowing the temperatures to stay up. we've got a lot of sunshine friday, saturday, sunday. the coldest day is going to be saturday by a good bit. and a possible nor'easter affecting the area on tuesday. more on that in a minute. we have clear skies right now, and we've got clear skies to the west too. there's a lot of dry air in this country, and a lot of it's headed this way. we have clear skies now, and by morning, it's not nearly as cold as it was this morning. that sets us up for a pretty rapid temperature rise as we go through the morning. so we're talking about getting into the 60s in much of the area, upper 50s north and west.

nice and sunny. but look what happens in the afternoon. just a few hours later, the 60 goes down to 50. this is during the day. this isn't at night. and allentown goes from the mid-50s to the low 40s. so be prepared for that. we're talking about wind on top of that, so you're going to feel a whole lot colder at 5:00 tomorrow afternoon than you will at noon. the eagles, weather's going to be great by sunday. not too windy, plus we're going to be seeing a lot milder temperatures. as you can see, 10 degrees warmer on sunday than saturday. sunshine both days. it's looking really, really good. but as we go into next week, the weekend high pressure is dominating our weather all the way through sunday. that makes it easy. and then here comes this possible nor'easter. monday night and into tuesday, many of the computer models are suggesting that, so just wanted to give you a heads-up because
