president elect. police resort to tear gas to finally end an hour's long barricade with a man who shot at officers. nbc 10 news starts now. three teenagers are under arrest and police are looking for more after a mob-style attack in center city. good evening. a philadelphia police officer trying to put a stop to the beatings end up in the hospital. nbc 10's drew smith is live on walnut street. they say this was completely unprovoked? >> reporter: at least eight victims had no warning. a huge mob of more than 50 teen age boys, picking victims at random and beating them to the ground. tonight, witnesses say it turned into chaos. >> i mean his nose was bleeding. >> reporter: a couple still shaken up after seeing the aftermath of the attacks asked

us not to show their faces. they were shopping. >> the one guy's hands were shaking like crazally shaking. he was obviously so upset. >> reporter: these officers were not the first to respond. an off-duty cop tried to arrest the boys while they were beating two others. the officer now has a broken bone. >> they didn't say anything and found themselves getting beat up. it was scary. >> three minors are in custody. surveillance from popular stores. customers say they can't wrap their heads around what the kids were thinking. >> i think everyone was taken off guard. it was just unsettling all the way around. >> the eight victims we know about so far were scattered. the first being close to where we're standing and stretching down the block and around the corner. one witness telling me who saw

this all unfold that it was pure stupidity in a large mob. we're live in center city. new details tonight on a police-involved shooting in philadelphia's omy section. offerings were checking out a mini van just before 6:00 tonight. a man got out of that van and officers chased him. police say the suspect fell, got back up and turned at officers with a gun. that's when an officer shot the suspect. he's in critical but stable condition tonight. new at 11:00 a villanueva student is attacked by a group of men yelling about trump. radner police tell us it happened between west campus and main campus thursday. the exact details are not known but the school released a statement saying they find this racist behavior counter to their values.

this comes a day after we learned racist messages were being sent to black students at the university of pennsylvania. they now say a student at the university of oklahoma has been temporarily suspended believed they originated from the store. "daddy trump." sent epitaphs of african americans hanging from trees. president elect trump graduated from penn. they called on president elect trump to break his silence on the string of hate crimes following the election. they're urging him to make a speech denouncing all hate speech. the group goes on to say they will not accept this behavior. so far it's received more than 6,000 signatures. for a fourth straight night, antitrump protesters took the streets of philadelphia.

police escorted about 60 people as they marched in center city. many were holding signs criticizing the president elect. photos showing them mafrping through the streets of soulberry township. the election was dead locked in the county with clinton winning by just 2,000 votes. >> you'rer a bunch of liberal communists. >> and there were dueling protests between protrump and antitrump supporters in easten. both sides gathered on the opposite sides of the street this afternoon. supporters say the country should give president elect trump a real shot and stop the protest s while the antitrump group promised to keep the protests going. and protests are happening across the country again tonight. this is the scene at an antitrump demonstration in portland, oregon. miami and indianapolis saw rallies against the president
