rain almost up to cape may already. earlier in the day it was totally sunny. that's that area of rain that is approaching. so don't leave the windows open tonight. temperatures are in the 50s, right near normal for this time of the year right now. as we go through the evening, temperatures are not going to drop a lot. look at the rain, by 6:00 a.m., philadelphia, 39 degrees in some of the suburbs. so it will be a little bit chilly and a little bit damp across a good bit of the area. in parts of new jersey, the rain moves in obviously before 10:00. at the jersey shore it's in there by 6:00. and it's not going to be raining all day tomorrow, but that may be the only rain that we see for several days. we're in a drought, we could actually use them. i'll be back to talk about the next chance of rain, it affects part of weekend too, a little later. nbc 10 following breaking news. you may have seen president

for white nationalist and anti-semitic views. vice president-elect spoke this morning at an event for t0÷ man who will replace him in indiana, governor-elector rick holcomb. pence is taking over heading trump's transition team. journalist and author gwen ifill died yesterday. she was one of the country's most prominent african-american journalists, a long-time broadcaster at pbs, and previously had worked at nbc news and "the new york times." she was in hospice care when she died yesterday morning. she was 61 years old. fallout from the university of pennsylvania after black students were blasted with hateful messages. the headline of the university newspaper reads, standing up against racist

messages." pennsylvania's senior u.s. senator is on campus today to speak with do you notistudents. nbc 10's lauren mayk is live there with more. >> reporter: jim, this wasn't something that everyone wanted to talk about today. it's been a tough couple of days. those who shared their feelings expressed some disappointment that this happened, some relief that this was not tracesed about a traced back to someone here at the university of pennsylvania, and gratitude for the support that has been pouring in. on the picturesque campus of the university of pennsylvania, students are dealing with some ugly messages, racist messages that went out to some black students. the students were added to a group that had messages about lynching and used the group name "trump disciples." this woman told us her friends received some of the messages. >> they were really scared. they couldn't stop crying. it made me feel unsafe.

>> reporter: the shock of the hateful words affecting more than the students personally targeted. how did it make you feel? >> i was shocked at first. there was a lot of like tension over the election in general. >> reporter: destiny bingham and others tell us they felt comforted by the outrage expressed by alumni, the college republican group, and fellow students. >> people that i hadn't talked to since freshman year reached out to me to say, i'm not a person of color but i want you to know i'm outraged with you, i'm hurt with you, and we're going to fix this, basically. >> reporter: on campus today we caught up with u.s. senator bob casey after he met with students. >> it was good to be able to sit with some students today and to hear their personal stories about not just what happened, but i think what happens on a regular basis in our society that we've got to be much more vigilant about. >> reporter: here's what we've learned about the investigation. this has led back to the state of oklahoma.

the university of pennsylvania says it is linked to three people there, including one student at the university of oklahoma. now that school tells us that that student has been temporarily suspended and they are currently trying to determine the extent of that student's involvement. live in university city, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. an update on a story nbc 10 first told you about thursday at 4:00. parents of students at a bucks county high school will have the chance tonight to speak with school officials about racist graffiti that showed up inside some school bathrooms last week. council rock high school's principal addressed the incident in a letter to parents. the graffiti included a swastika and a warning, "if trump wins, watch out." the authorities also say some latino students were harassed. mitch blacher has breaking news from skyforce 10 from the

kensington section. >> reporter: yes, jim, this is jasper street and east lehigh avenue. the kids are still on the bus. they're getting off right now. a couple of them appear to be getting picked up from this accident scene. no injuries reported at this point. you can see the emergency crews on the screen. they did check out all of the kids. a slow commute home for the school bus as well as this driver, an accident in the kensington section of philadelphia. i'm mitch blacker in skyforce 10, nbc 10 news. breaking news out of georgia where a father has been found guilty of murder for the death of his son who was left in a hot car. justin ross harris's 22-month-old son cooper died in 2014 after harris left the boy in his suv for hours. he says he forgot to drop his son at day-care and went to work. prosecutors say he left the

child to die on purpose. a flash mob style attack in center city this weekend. two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the case. the attack happened saturday night near 16th and walnut streets. police say a group of teenagers started beating up random people in the area. an off-duty police officer and his wife tried to step in but they were hurt too. the police commissioner reacted to the attack earlier today. >> you've got people getting assaulted. that should not happen. it's ridiculous behavior. i don't understand it. some people want to indict parents. i talk about personal responsibility. these are kids old enough to know better. >> mayor jim kenney is set to discuss the case in a few hours. coming up, what piece of evidence police are hoping to find to learn more about this case. skyforce 10 over a major construction accident in gloucester county this morning. this excavator overturned at monroe road with a worker

trapped inside. rescue crews got him out. he went to the hospital with head and back injuries. firefighters worked to put out flames at a tire shop in kensington early this morning. from skyforce 10, you can see the charred roof of joel's tire shop on frankford avenue. our nbc 10 crew on the ground was there as well as heavy smoke was billowing from the building. no one was hurt. investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started. a new key card system allows septa senior riders to just tap and go to get to their destination. septa rolled out its key cards for senior citizens today. riders can load up to $250 on the cards and use them on subways, buses, and trollies without having to show their i.d. to a cashier or operator. some seniors tell nbc 10 how the new card is simplifying their lives. >> i'm 70 years old. they asked me to show them my i.d. i have a senior citizen card,

some of them don't accept it. >> septa says 40,000 seniors have already applied for the cards. they don't yet work for regional rail riders. at least ten people have contracted an infection from contaminated medical supplies. new jersey has seen more than 50 cases of the infection. the bacteria can call fever, chills, shortness of breath and abnormal heart rate. the state health department says the outbreak may be linked to health care facilities using contaminated syringes from a texas supplier. holidays just ten days away, you certainly don't want to celebrate them with the flu. doctors say now is the time to get your flu shot. it takes a couple of weeks for the protection to kick in after you get the shot. patients and employees are rolling up their sleeves after delaware officials confirmed flu cases in all three of the

state's counties. doctors say the shot does more than protect just you. >> all of us have loved ones and family members who are at high risk, children under age 5, people over 65, people with diabetes, lung disease, heart disease. >> delaware health officials say the state's latest flu cases involve two elderly people, also a baby. none of those people had received a flu shot. we have new video of a hammer-wielding burglar who smashed his way into several stores in a south jersey strip mall along bridgeton pike and harrison township in gloucester county. the thief broke windows and burglarized businesses this weekend. nbc 10's cydney long joins us live from the scene. cydney, do police have any idea who the person is responsible for this? >> reporter: unfortunately not, jacqueline. police know he acted alone. but in the dark of night he hit five of the seven stores in this upscale strip mall. but he left behind broken glass

and also left behind his every footstep on surveillance video. >> he's covered up pretty good. he's got the hood pulled tight. not sure if he has anything else on his face. >> reporter: dressed in a hooded parka and sweats and boots and armed with a hammer, watch as the burglar smashes the glass and walks right into deluxe nails. >> it appears he had no worries in the world. we believe it's not his first rodeo on this one and he's done this before. >> reporter: the police lieutenant says in each job he took aim at the cash registers. >> he basically broke the windows and the doors, went into our place, grabbed a couple of registers, and then ran out. rose one after the next, he hit hello gorgeous salon, marino's restaurant, oscar's carpet and sherman williams. >> $1500 from one business, a thousand from another. >> reporter: in less than a half hour, police say he walked away with thousands. he left business owners

scrambling to make immediate repairs to their front doors. for anthony marino, he wonders if the crook had been watching this strip mall. >> the bread comes earlier than that. he would have been in trouble. maybe he already knew what time the bread people come. >> reporter: business owners here are simply praying for an arrest. >> get him put away or whatever so he doesn't do this again. >> reporter: these business owners had to make immediate repairs to their front doors. there's glass doors here. harrison police tell me they are convinced that with so many highways feeding into this area, they say this burglary spree will not be an easy one to solve. coming up at 5:00, i'll tell you what they're doing to tackle that. we're live in harrison township, cydney long, nbc 10 news. strong aftershocks continue to shake new zealand hours after a deadly earthquake hit that country, triggering a small tsunami. the prime minister toured the

area hit by the 7.8 magnitude quake this morning. take a look at what he saw. the main road into town is completely blocked off by all of that. 1,000 people may need to be rescued. two people died. cameras captured the moment that earthquake hit new zealand, this is video of nelson city. as you can see, the quake shook shelves, sent wine bottles flying and set door signs swaying. the cameras captured golf clubs toppling over at a golf shop in wellington. talk about a sticky situation. look at these three cows that survived that quake, stand on an island of grass. it's unclear if the animals were part of a larger herd or not. all right. this is the start of severe winter weather week right now here on nbc 10. >> i know we don't necessarily want to think about winter, but we have to so we can be prepared. it won't be long before the first flakes start to fall.

mid-november brought us our very first snow of the season last year. >> remember this? >> this was the scene in allentown, to refresh your memory, back on november 23rd. now we want to make sure you're prepared when severe weather hits. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist hurricane schwartz joins us. >> glenn, it's just a matter of time before we're talking snow. >> as a matter of fact, jim, i have the first snowflake symbol in the ten-day forecast. no that it's storm or anything. but at least part of the area could see first snowflakes by the end of the weekend. for tonight, it's just rain. we've got cloudy skies. the day started off totally sunny, beautifully blue skies. we saw the super moon last night. but different story now. we have that overcast, you can see a little bit of brightness

in the western sky. that is only temporary. temperatures have been in the 50s for most of the day. the high clouds continue to increase. look at that, the mid-50s at the shore. and also that strong southeast wind increasing the moisture. but most of this moisture looks like it's riding a little bit offshore. so i don't think we're going to see a whole lot of rain except right at the beaches, as you can see right now, we're already starting to see a little bit in cape may county. the latest computer models are coming in, keeping most of the rain in new jersey. other models bring it up through the philadelphia area by the morning rush, not necessarily very heavy. and then later on during the day and the afternoon, we start to clear out. that will give us a chance to get a little bit of a view of that super moon tomorrow night. but the amounts of rain generally on the lighter side, a third of an inch or less. it doesn't help us a lot for the drought. you can see the neighborhood

weather, temperatures holding in the 50s during the day tomorrow. and the lehigh valley getting the least amount of rain, maybe no rain at all. but parts of new jersey, especially the jersey shore, seeing more significant rain early in the day, then sunshine developing early in the afternoon. dover, rehoboth beach, it will all be over by the morning. in the next three days, we see temperatures moving up. we understand and thursday, a fair amount of sunshine both days, after at least the cloudy and damp start to the day tomorrow. and then here we go. see that? tuesday has some of the rain. but we're dry wednesday, thursday a thursday, friday, maybe even into saturday. a system is moving into the weekend to give parts of the

so this is mostly a new jersey event, and especially at the shore, and even there the heaviest of the rain stays offshore. in philadelphia there's our threat of rain, not at 10:00 p.m. tonight but at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. some of the p.a. suburbs barely on the edge of the rain. lehigh valley could get by without any rain in this case. delaware gets grazed by it at 6:00 a.m. the jersey shore is the area with the most hours of rain. we'll see if there's more rain coming as we head toward the weekend, coming up a little bit later. >> announcer: now political gifts in question. the nbc 10 investigators comb through philadelphia's elected officials' financial disclosure forms. most have no gift disclosures. one city councilmember has pages full, mostly free tickets. >> reporter: has anyone ever asked you for this little of detail before? >> no. >> reporter: we're the first

ones to ever ask you who specifically gave you these tickets? >> yes. >> reporter: when we took a closer look, some gifts were regifted to other councilmembers who should have disclosed the gifts themselves. >> i think it's something the public needs to be aware of as to how government really works. >> here's the background. after district attorney seth williams recently disclosed five years' worth of freebies, the nbc 10 investigators wanted to know who else got gifts. >> they found councilmembers who accepted the gifts and said they used them to help the community. but mitch blacher reports that some of the councilmembers didn't document their good deeds. >> reporter: councilman jones knows how to make an entrance. he supports the universal circus, a staple in his district. >> one of the elephants in the room is tickets. >> reporter: according to his financial disclosure form, since 2012 he's received and given way

more than $36,000 worth of tickets to the event. he says the vast majority of the tickets go to kids in the community. >> a lot of the kids don't get out of an eight to ten-block area. >> reporter: the city's most prolific gift reporter got and gave away seats to the sixers, phillies and eagles. tickets to the museum of art, passes to the zoo. you can call councilman jones the robin hood of tickets. he's given way $58,000 worth. his financial disclosures say it all went to the people of the fourth district. but when we asked for specific documentation, we found it went to more than constituents. why did you give elected officials these tickets? >> because they also have block captains, constituents, cdcs, that they want to help. i don't want to keep it all to

myself. >> reporter: david oh and jamesy bla blackwell are listed as getting tickets. even though the tickets might go to a good cause, city law says gifts worth more than $200 must be reported. councilmembers reynolds, brown, and oh all received tickets below the reportable limit. but councilman johnson got $300 worth of tickets. why didn't you ask the circus yourself for those tickets? >> normally because it's part of his individual district. it's just normal that he will have more support from that particular circus. so it was protocol. >> reporter: he told us he didn't report it because the tickets weren't for him, they were for his district. counc councilwoman blackwell says she has no record of the tickets

welcome back. facebook's ceo is promising to crack down on the rise of fake news on the social network. mark zuckerberg is vowing to read out phony stories which some say seemed to explode in the days leading up to the presidential election. it comes as some critics say this fake news may have influenced the outcome of the election. zuckerberg denies that but says he doesn't want it on his website. the walls of a new york city subway station are looking for colorful than usual. people have been decorating the station on the corner of 14th street and sixth avenue with sticky notes, a visual response to the presidential election. people have been posting messages in order to feel less stressed and to inspire one another. the birds? well, finally they're back to

clear skies. and we had lots of folks coming around to check out the weather, to check out storm ranger 10, storm force 10. they had loads of questions about how it worked. look at the blue sky behind me, that was today, we didn't tape that on a previous day. that's bill henley, working a long shift and doing the story about what goes on behind the scenes, signing autographs, giving away stuff. tomorrow we're going to be at philadelphia mills, what used to be known as franklin mills, doing the same thing. during a little break at oxford valley i went in there and bought a couple of bow ties. we have cloudy skies, temperature in the mid- to upper 50s. we got up near 60 in much of the area. the rain is coming up near the coast. the heaviest of it looks like it's just offshore, perhaps it will graze long beach island,

some of the yellow in there, the heavier rain. lighter rain in delaware and most of new jersey. maybe even into the philadelphia area. here is a different computer model from what i showed you earlier. it shows the rain coming into philadelphia, heavier toward the shore, at the morning rush. watch what happens as we go toward -- just after the rush hour, things dry out, then they clear out. we have sunshine later tomorrow afternoon. sets us up for some pretty nice weather for a couple of days. the neighborhoods tomorrow, we have temperatures in the 50s across most of the area. look at dover and rehoboth beach by the time we get to tomorrow morning, it's already over with there. and the ten-day forecast shows the beautiful weather for wednesday, thursday, and friday. tomorrow is not a total washout, remember. it's just potentially for the morning rush, and parts of the lehigh valley, berks county may

not see anything. calling your attention to sunday. yes, there are snowflakes there in the forecast, as the temperature starts to plunge. we have colder air coming in sunday and into monday. there could be some snow flurries or snow showers in parts of the area, of course most likely the poconos, lehigh valley, higher elevation seleva. this can happen this time of the year, nothing exceptional and not really a sign of what's coming this winter, yet. >> that operative word, "yet." all right, glenn. we're focusing on severe winter weather all week long with tours through the area malls. they'll be showing off high tech weather equipment like storm 10. imagine going 11 weeks without a working fridge. >> a brookhaven couple contacted

us after their fridge broke down this summer. they say phone calls to the company went nowhere. harry stepped in to help them out. >> i had to help them out, they had to keep going out to eat because they had nowhere to put their food. they bought an extended warranty but say they ended up with extended problems. >> your fruits and vegetables, you can separate everything. this is where you can put your lunch meats. >> reporter: this is the fridge margareta says she thought she would own for years to come. but back in august, three years after she bought it, it broke down. >> i pulled the drawer out. everything in there was totally defrosted. >> reporter: she says she called hh greg rigg right away. they said she needed a new compressor. >> why isn't the part in? >> reporter: when the part was installed, she says the fridge brogue down again, four days

later. >> that's twice we lost our food. >> reporter: she tried calling hh gregg and says she spoke to 20 people. after more tech visits and still no working fridge, she reached her breaking point. she called nbc 10 responds. we contacted hh gregg. they told us the fridge needed new parts. they gave the loves a new fridge. >> we got nbc channel 10 news involved. we now have our new refrigerator. >> hh gregg provided them with a $50 check for their troubles, which i'm sure they wanted to use that a lot, because they're on a fixed income and had to keep going out to eat. we're going to add all this money together. the cost of the fridge and the check they got to our recovery counter. our total now, $171,813. >> they can get back to making meals at home.

i'm watching rain on the radar. i'll show you if it will move into your neighborhood and what you can expect for your morning commute. plus a whale watcher group at the jersey shore came back with quite a story to tell. now more people are having close encounters with these giant animals. that's causing amazement and concerns, all new at 5:00.

>> announcer: nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 5:00, get those umbrellas ready. nbc 10 radar shows wet weather moving in. >> we're tracking your neighborhood forecast. the rain is going to hit the jersey shore and parts of the delaware area. it's also going to head toward philadelphia, head north, that is. it gets started tonight and could stick around for your morning commute. >> here's first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. >> it depends which areas you live in. like keith mentioned, delaware and the jersey shore. the rest of the area, fairly dry right now. we'll see spotty showers developing tonight, could even last for the morning commute. if you look at the radar, most of the rain is still south of the area, even offshore. but if you are in cape may county and sussex county, you've seen a majority of the rain so far. cape may county, we're seeing it on our beaches and delaware beaches, mainly light rain moving up from the south bay.

i don't think everyone will see the rain tonight. it will be around for part of the area for the morning commute tomorrow. if you're in the philadelphia area, cloudy, 53 degrees. by 10:00 p.m., which could still be dry. wouldn't be surprised if a couple of showers try to move in. by 6:00 a.m., chilly with showers moving in. pennsylvania suburbs should stay fairly dry tonight. by early tomorrow morning we could already see some scattered showers. lehigh valley could be remaining fairly dry for the morning commute. temperatures in the upper 30s. if you're in delaware along the jersey shore or new jersey, you could be dealing with very late rain tonight and some of that could be lingering for the commute tomorrow. make sure you have the umbrellas in the morning. i don't think everyone will be seeing this, but we'll be seeing spotty showers for the morning commute. coming up, how cool the temperatures will stay for the rest of the week and we'll talk about this weekend forecast, straight ahead. happening tonight, leaders in philadelphia are demanding answers after a mob
